Obecny sezon nie należy do udanych dla Grigora Dimitrowa. Bułgar osiągnął tylko finał halowych zawodów w Rotterdamie. Choć obecnie zajmuje 10. miejsce w rankingu ATP, to w poniedziałek czeka go spadek. Tenisista z Chaskowa ma bowiem do obrony aż 1590 punktów za zeszłoroczny występ w Paryżu i triumf w Finałach ATP World Tour.

Dimitrow na pewno nie zakwalifikuje się do londyńskiego Masters, zatem występ we francuskiej stolicy będzie jego ostatnim w 2018 roku. Na pierwszym treningu Bułgar pojawił się w towarzystwie Andre Agassiego i natychmiast ruszyła lawina spekulacji. Trener Daniel Vallverdu potwierdził, że utytułowany Amerykanin będzie w Paryżu pomagać jego podopiecznemu.

Grigor Dimitrov reached the third round in the French capital for the sixth straight year, beating Roberto Bautista Agut 7-6(10), 6-4. The 2017 Nitto ATP Finals champion was forced to save three set points in a 22-point first-set tie-break before claiming victory after one hour and 36 minutes.

"I think I played a very good first set. It's one of the best sets I have played this year I would say," said Dimitrov. "So that was a good feeling. And even in the second set when I was two breaks up, I just wanted to try a couple of things... I lost two service games, but I found a way after to just break right away and finish strong.

"[There were] a lot of long rallies and it gives me a lot of confidence as soon as I win them. So it's great. Obviously it's a very tough first round for me, but I was happy to finish in such a manner."

Dimitrov, who is working with former World No. 1 Andre Agassi this week, will meet Marin Cilic in the third round. The 27-year-old trails Cilic 1-3 in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series.

"We've known each other for quite some time and it's the right timing, right now, to have [Andre] on the team," said Dimitrov. "Nothing is said at the moment but we're just still trying to figure how we're going to make the schedule.

"Hopefully I can travel with him a bit more next year, and for sure we're going to try to spend a lot more time together in the upcoming weekends and months... Hopefully in the next couple of months we'll know more how we're going to do our schedule."

2017 Flashback: Dimitrov Completes Dream Run In London

Bulgarian star caps an emotional win

The stranglehold of the game's elite on the Nitto ATP Finals trophy has been firm and relentless since the tournament moved to London in 2009. The trio of Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Andy Murray had accounted for seven consecutive titles in that span, dominating on the ATP World Tour's biggest stage.

But, as players entered The O2 for the 2017 edition, Djokovic and Murray were notable absences due to injury. And with Rafael Nadal pulling out during the tournament, it created a significant opportunity for the rest of the field. Grigor Dimitrov took full advantage.

Seeded sixth, Dimitrov was a relentless force throughout the week in London, completing a perfect 5-0 campaign. It all culminated with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 victory over David Goffin in the championship, giving the Bulgarian the biggest title of his career.

“Obviously, this is a great, an unbelievable achievement for me," Dimitrov said after the final. "But I still have a lot to give. I want to perform better and better... This means a lot to me, and to even qualify and then be successful in the group has been a great reward for me and my team. They really deserve this as well."


It appeared as if Federer would storm to a seventh title at the season finale, but Goffin pulled the upset of the tournament with a dramatic three-set semi-final win. The victory came less than a month after the Swiss routed the Belgian 6-1, 6-2 in his hometown of Basel. With an improbable title match set between Dimitrov and Goffin, both competitors were thrust into the spotlight in the biggest match of their careers.

The final would go to a deciding set and Dimitrov pulled through, breaking in an 11-point game when Goffin spilled a backhand wide. The 26-year-old was emotional in his celebration. He lied face first on the court, sobbing, before hopping to his box and sharing long embraces with his family and friends.

The first debutant to win the Nitto ATP Finals title since Spaniard Alex Corretja in 1998 (d. Moya), Dimitrov completed a storied season that many pundits and fans had long anticipated.

After joining forces with coach Daniel Vallverdu in 2016, everything changed. The Bulgarian thought that a maiden ATP World Tour Masters 1000 crown in Cincinnati would be the pinnacle of his breakthrough season. But that was just the beginning. Dimitrov made a stunning charge up the ATP Rankings to a career-high No. 3, as he raised the trophy at The O2. Dimitrov announced his arrival in grand fashion, having sat at No. 40 just a year prior.

“With the right set of mind, with the right people, with the right support, things happen. For me, that period really helped me a lot. I think I needed that,” Dimitrov said, referring to his fall in the ATP Rankings and the subsequent Vallverdu hire. “In that particular moment, I really realised what I really need to work on, who are the real people around me, who really counts on me, who matters to me. There's so many lessons that I took out of that period.”

Dimitrov concluded the season with a personal-best four titles, also including victories on the hard courts of Brisbane and Sofia. Having never claimed multiple Top 10 wins in a single tournament, he achieved the feat twice in 2017 - three in a row in Brisbane and five straight under the bright lights of The O2.

Przed kilkoma dniami Grigor Dimitrow udzielił wywiadu telewizji bTV, w którym poinformował, że najprawdopodobniej znów nie wystąpi w turnieju ATP w Sofii. - Moje szanse na grę w Sofii nie wyglądają dobrze. Wiem, że to może być rozczarowaniem, ale nie widzę powodu, dla którego miałbym czuć presję, by grać w prywatnym turnieju - powiedział, przy okazji krytykując władze bułgarskiego tenisa: - Dlaczego w Bułgarii musimy organizować turniej prywatny, skoro możemy robić coś więcej? Dlaczego dajemy możliwość tenisistom z poziomu ATP, a nie możemy zorganizować więcej challengerów i futuresów, by dać więcej szans naszym zawodnikom?
Słowa tenisisty nie zostały dobrze przyjęte wśród ludzi związanych z bułgarskim tenisem. Tenisista, któremu i tak fani w ojczyźnie mają za złe, że omija imprezę w Sofii, został poddany jeszcze mocniejszej krytyce. Wobec tego w sobotę postanowił odnieść się do swojej opinii.


- Po wywiadzie, którego udzieliłem w ubiegłym tygodniu, chciałem wyjaśnić moje uwagi dotyczące turnieju w Sofii, bo zostały źle przedstawione - napisał na Facebooku Bułgar. - Cieszę się, że w mojej ojczyźnie jest impreza ATP World Tour 250. Zagrałem w niej w 2017 roku i miałem wystarczająco wiele szczęścia, by zdobyć tytuł, co było wspaniałym momentem mojej kariery i zajmuje szczególne miejsce w sercu. Moje komentarze bardziej były powiązane z turniejami niższej rangi niż ATP World Tour. Moim zdaniem jest potrzeba, by Bułgarska Federacja Tenisa spróbowała organizować więcej imprez ATP Challenger Tour i ITF Futures - wyjaśnił.

- Szanuję wysiłki Dubai Duty Free, aby organizować turniej w Sofii, i życzę im wszystkiego najlepszego w 2019 roku. Jednocześnie mam nadzieję, że w najbliższej przyszłości będziemy mogli rozwijać tenis w Bułgarii - dodał.

W trzech dotychczas rozegranych edycjach turnieju Sofia Open Dimitrow zagrał tylko w jednej, w 2017 roku, gdy zdobył tytuł. Nadchodząca odbędzie się w dniach 4-10 lutego.

Do startu sezonu 2019 Grigor Dimitrow przygotowywał się w Monte Carlo, gdzie mieszka. Trenował nad siłą, wytrzymałością oraz rozwojem umiejętności tenisowych. Na koniec obozu ogłosił, z kim będzie współpracował podczas przyszłorocznych rozgrywek.
Głównym trenerem Dimitrowa pozostanie Daniel Vallverdu, z którym współpracuje od lipca 2016 roku. Pod wodzą Wenezuelczyka, w przeszłości opiekuna m.in. W czasie przygotowań tenisiście z Chaskowa towarzyszył również Andre Agassi. Uznawany za jednego z najwybitniejszych graczy w historii Amerykanin, ośmiokrotny mistrz wielkoszlemowy i lider rankingu przez 101 tygodni, po raz pierwszy w sztabie Dimitrowa pojawił się w ostatnim tygodniu października podczas turnieju w Paryżu. Bułgar wówczas jednak nie chciał wyjawić, czy ta współpraca będzie kontynuowana.

Jak się okazuje - tak. Agassi obejmie funkcję koordynatora i będzie towarzyszył Dimitrowowi przez kilkanaście tygodni w roku, podczas najważniejszych turniejów. Dla Amerykanina to druga praca trenerska. Ma za sobą nieudaną kooperację z Novakiem Djokoviciem.

Sztab najlepszego bułgarskiego tenisisty uzupełniają trener od przygotowania fizycznego Sebastian Durand oraz lekarz Casey Cordial.

Sezon 2019 Dimitrow rozpocznie w turnieju w Brisbane (31 grudnia - 6 stycznia), gdzie w 2017 roku zdobył tytuł. Następnie zagra w wielkoszlemowym Australian Open (14-27 stycznia).

The 2017 Nitto ATP Finals champion will be looking for a bounce back 2019. Dimitrov dropped 16 spots in his year-end ranking, from No. 3 in 2017 to No. 19 in 2018.

A good start Down Under will go a long way to restoring that Top 10 year-end ATP Ranking for Dimitrov. In 2017, his best year yet, he won the Brisbane International for his fifth tour-level title and ended the Aussie summer by reaching his second Grand Slam semi-final at the Australian Open (Wimbledon 2014). The Bulgarian has said he plans to continue working with former No. 1 Andre Agassi, who joined him during the final tournament of the 2018 regular season, the Rolex Paris Masters, and coach Daniel Vallverdu in 2019.

Dimitrov Sets Up Nishikori QF In Brisbane

Twelve months ago, Grigor Dimitrov needed to save two match points to beat hometown favourite John Millman at the Brisbane International.

On Wednesday, however, Dimitrov needed only two sets. The 2017 champion held off a second-set comeback to accelerate his clean start to the 2019 season, 6-3, 6-4.

“I remember what happened last year... Obviously I thought about that in the past days, since I knew that I had to play against him, and I was just trying to do things that were better than last year,” Dimitrov said.

The sixth seed led by a set and double break, 6-3, 4-1. But Millman served for a 5-4 advantage before Dimitrov broke for the fourth time and then served out the second-round match.

“Full respect to him. He's an unbelievable fighter, as we saw again today, especially in that second set... But I managed to keep my composure really good throughout the whole match, especially at 4-4,” Dimitrov said.

Millman said Dimitrov showed his true potential to reach the last eight. “I thought he played great tennis. Stingy with his errors, very aggressive, first set especially,” Millman said. “We all know what Grigor is capable of when he's playing good tennis, and today, I think he showcased just why people see him as a Top 10 player.”

The Bulgarian is into the quarter-finals for the sixth time in seven Brisbane appearances. He will next meet second seed Kei Nishikori of Japan, who beat American Denis Kudla 7-5, 6-2. Nishikori won 84 per cent of his first-serve points and didn't face a break point.

“I thought it was a good match, tough match. He was playing good, especially in the first set... and after 5-5 I think he dropped his level a little bit, and I also [was] able to play better. I started playing better, playing more aggressively and started getting more rhythm, and my serve got better in the second,” Nishikori said.

Nishikori leads his FedEx ATP Head2Head series against Dimitrov 4-1. The only matchup Dimitrov won came in the 2017 Brisbane final. “[I'm] excited to play Dimi. He's obviously a good player. And I'm sure it's going to be a great match, so hopefully I can have good tennis again,” Nishikori said.

Japanese qualifier Yasutaka Uchiyama earned the upset of the tournament so far. The 26-year-old, No. 185 in the ATP Rankings, dismissed third seed Kyle Edmund of Great Britain 7-6(6), 6-4.

Uchiyama hit 15 aces and saved all three break points faced to knock out the World No. 14 Edmund, who made the Australian Open semi-finals last year. Uchiyama will next meet Jeremy Chardy, who beat Aussie Nick Kyrgios 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-3.

For a set and a half, defending champion Kyrgios was nearly invincible on serve. The Aussie won 100 per cent (25/25) of his first-serve points in the opening set and led Chardy 7-6(5).

But Chardy caught on in the second, breaking Kyrgios with a clean forehand return winner for a 4-2 lead and again to even their second-round contest. The Frenchman then pulled a Kyrgios and dominated the decider, dropping only five service points (20/25) to advance.

“It was a tough match. Nick is an amazing player, he served amazing. Today I played really solid, I'm really happy with the win. Sorry for Nick, he's my friend outside the court. It's always difficult to play against someone you like,” Chardy said.
