Andy Murray był największą gwiazdą tegorocznej edycji turnieju ATP w Waszyngtonie. Szkot, dla którego był to ledwie drugi występ po ponad 11-miesięcznej absencji spowodowanej kontuzją i operacją biodra, w stolicy USA rozegrał trzy mecze. Pokonał Mackenzie'ego McDonalda, Kyle'a Edmunda i Mariusa Copila, ale na tym jego występ dobiegł końca.

Po zakończonym po godz. 3:00 lokalnego czasu pojedynku z Copilem Murray zrezygnował z dalszego udziału w imprezie i oddał walkowerem zaplanowany kolejnego dnia ćwierćfinał z Alexem de Minaurem. To nie spodobało się dyrektor turnieju, Keely O'Brien, która na łamach "Washington Post" skrytykowała Szkota. - Mam nadzieję, że Andy zdaje sobie sprawę, jaką rolę pełni w tym sporcie i że jest globalnym wzorem do naśladowania dla młodych chłopców i dziewcząt, że kiedy sprawy i okoliczności są trudne, nie można po prostu się poddać - skomentowała.

Murray nie odniósł się wówczas do słów O'Brien. Ale, jak się okazało, nie puścił ich płazem i w jego sercu pozostała zadra. Na tyle duża, że Szkot podał w wątpliwość kolejne występy w imprezie Citi Open.

We wtorek tenisista z Dunblane zorganizował czat z kibicami na Instagramie. Zapytany przez jednego z fanów, czy w 2019 roku wystąpi w Waszyngtonie, odpowiedział: - Prawdopodobnie nie, po tym, jak dyrektor turnieju mnie nie szanuje.

Obecnie Murray spędza czas w domu po odpoczynku na Malediwach. Na początku grudnia uda się do Miami na obóz przygotowawczy przed startem nowego sezonu. Rozgrywki 2019 zainauguruje w pierwszym tygodniu stycznia w Brisbane.

Sezon 2018 był dla Andy'ego Murraya nieudany. Na początku stycznia Brytyjczyk przeszedł operację biodra. Do gry powrócił dopiero w połowie czerwca, ale rozegrał ledwie sześć turniejów i już we wrześniu zrezygnował z dalszych startów. W efekcie w rankingu ATP spadł z drugiego na 259. miejsce.
John McEnroe, były wybitny tenisista, obecnie komentator telewizyjny, jest jednak przekonany, że Murraya stać na powrót do czołówki. - Dzięki swoim zdolnościom atletycznym Murray był w stanie stać się jednym z najlepszych tenisistów ostatnich dziesięciu lat i zdobywać tytuły wielkoszlemowe - mówił w rozmowie z "Daily Mail". - Jeśli odbuduje 100 proc. dyspozycję fizyczną bądź będzie jej blisko, spodziewam się, że w ciągu sześciu-dziewięciu miesięcy wróci do czołowej "10" rankingu. Ale jeśli będzie sprawny w 80 proc., będzie zupełnie inną osobą.


Słynny Amerykanin uważa, że tenisista z Dunblane powinien czerpać inspirację z przykładów Rogera Federera, Rafaela Nadala i Novaka Djokovicia. Każdy z tej trójki w dwóch ostatnich sezonach zmagał się z poważnymi kłopotami zdrowotnymi, ale zdołał odbudować najwyższą formę, wrócić na szczyt rankingu i zdobywać wielkoszlemowe tytuły. - Patrzy na to, co w wieku 36 lat zrobił Federer. Spogląda na Nadala czy Djokovicia, który nagle stał się tym starym Djokoviciem, więc jestem pewien, że myśli: "Powinienem móc być w stanie zrobić coś podobnego" - stwierdził McEnroe.

Andy Murray will be among the first arrivals for the Brisbane International

Andy Murray will be among the early arrivals in the airlift of tennis stars for the Brisbane International, which starts on Monday week.

Murray has been training in Florida ahead of his return to the circuit after a 2018 season ruined by a slow recovery from hip surgery.

Scotland’s dual Wimbledon champion said earlier this month he will arrive in Brisbane several days before the December 31 tournament starts.

Murray managed only six tournaments of his comeback from hip surgery, curtailing his schedule in order to undertake strength and conditioning work.

In his last event of the year at Shenzhen, China, he posted a heartening win over world No.11 David Goffin.

“I’m planning to get to Brisbane pretty early, probably a week before the start of the tournament,’’ Murray said in a social media post.

The 31-year-old gets into the Brisbane main draw on the basis of his injury-protected ranking of No.2.

But under ATP rules it does not guarantee him a seeding, so he could be drawn against one of the eight seeds, including Rafael Nadal and Australians Alex de Minaur and Nick Kyrgios, in the early rounds at the Queensland Tennis Centre.

Murray has trained in Miami, as he did last year, with hitting partners including former top-10 player Fernando Verdasco and he previously worked with American Bill Knowles, a fitness specialist who has on his list of past clients Tiger Woods and England rugby union champion Jonny Wilkinson.

As was the case in 2018, the Scot’s recovery will be best judged by tournament wear-and-tear, and Brisbane is scheduled to be his only tournament before the Australian Open.

Murray has not entered any event before arriving in Brisbane, while Nadal has entered an Abu Dhabi exhibition on December 28-29 before he travels on from the Middle East.

Video posted by Nadal’s academy this week of the world No.2 hitting augurs well for his recovery from knee and ankle injuries which curtailed his season two tournaments early.

Two more Brisbane seeds, Grand Slam finalists Kei Nishikori, ranked ninth, and Milos Raonic, ranked No.18, will play a three-day exhibition in Hawaii which starts on Friday.

Both Nadal (knee) and Murray (hip) withdrew in the last few days before the 2018 Brisbane International.

They are aiming to make good on what would be a second appearance for Nadal at the event and a third for Murray, a dual champion at Pat Rafter Arena.

Both members of the longstanding “Big Four’’ of men’s tennis need to reach tournament-ready levels of performance through 2019 without playing too much, especially on hardcourts.

Murray's Motivation: 'To Play On My Terms'

Andy Murray's resolve to work his way back from hip surgery is ingrained in his desire to ensure that the latter stages of his career are played on his terms. As he prepares to play just his seventh tournament in the past 18 months at next week’s Brisbane International, the Scot says he is determined to not let injury define his remaining seasons.

“I owe it to myself to give myself a chance to get back to the level that I’m happy competing at… I want to go out on my own terms. If I stopped six months ago or not given the hip time to recover, I may look back and regret that decision,” he said Friday.

Murray, 31, was speaking to media in Brisbane after earlier in the day practising with Grigor Dimitrov. This time last year Murray arrived at the season opener hopeful of returning to the tour after a six-month injury layoff. But he withdrew from the event and underwent right hip surgery in early January. By the time he returned to the tour in June at Queen’s, he’d been away from tournament play for 11 months.

Murray had a modest 7-5 win-loss record in 2018, with the best showing of his six tournament appearances being a quarter-final run in Cincinnati. He missed the final five weeks of the 2018 season with an ankle injury and in October and November Murray spent around six weeks working in Philadelphia with sports rehab specialist Bill Knowles.

“As I’ve gotten older, and with the last 12 months, I can’t believe how quickly things can change,” Murray said. “When I first had issues with the hip I was No. 1 in the world and 12 months later I was struggling. I thought I had time on my side. There’s nothing I’d rather do more than stay out on tour. I love the practice, the competition, the locker room. I want to play as long as I can. There are still things I want to achieve. Whether I am capable of doing that or not, we’ll see.”

At No. 256 in the ATP Rankings, Murray is using his protected ranking of No. 2 to enter Brisbane. But that ranking can’t be used for seedings, meaning Murray could draw any of the top eight seeds – including Rafael Nadal - in the early rounds. But the 31-year-old is focused on finding a way to regain form, win some matches if possible, and start enjoying tennis again.

“I have to be smart with how I train and manage [the hip] as best I can. Last year I was in more pain than I am now. It was a hard year in which I went through a lot, but I had to accept that pain was something I had to deal with. This time I’m trying to enjoy myself. I missed playing here and I’m going to go out and compete as hard as I can.”

Scot seeks his third trophy in Brisbane

It’s not every day that you get to take a helicopter ride over a crystal clear ocean, and it’s also not every day that you try kangaroo for the first time. But former World No. 1 Andy Murray did both on Saturday before beginning his campaign at the Brisbane International.

Murray and his coach, Jamie Delgado, took a helicopter ride to North Stradbroke Island, which is about 30 kilometres southeast of Brisbane. It was a nice excursion for the Scot before beginning his 2019 season at the ATP Tour 250 event.

“I enjoyed going in the helicopter. I’d been a few times before, but normally over cities. I’ve not been over water as much, and [there are] amazing views up there, so I enjoyed it,” Murray said. “Coach didn’t like it as much. I think he came around at the end. He was a bit worried at the beginning.”

Once on the island, Murray and Delgado received a traditional welcome, and a chef presented various local cuisine for the pair to taste. Murray even tried slow-cooked kangaroo for the first time, despite initial hesitation. He also enjoyed oyster and lobster tail.

“The kangaroo was alright. It was better than what I was expecting. Most of the stuff was fresh today, caught out of the ocean here and it was very good,” Murray said. “As you get a little bit older, you want to immerse yourself in the culture of the different countries that we go to visit. It’s a great opportunity that we get to travel the world and see different places, meet different people, try different foods. I had kangaroo for the first time in my life today, which I certainly wouldn’t have tried when I was younger, but I gave it a go and it was pretty good.”

Murray will now shift his focus to the task at hand in Brisbane, as he looks to earn his third title at the season-opening event. While the Scot is in town to extend his perfect 9-0 record at the tournament, he was happy to take a bit of a break from the tennis to enjoy the area first.

“Just to see the local culture, check out the beaches. I got to try a lot of their food, which was brilliant,” Murray said. “This is definitely a little bit different from most things we do, and I enjoyed it.”

The first day of 2019 may have been just the fresh start former World No. 1 Andy Murray needed, as the Scot began the new season on Tuesday with a 6-3, 6-4 victory against home favourite James Duckworth in the first round of the Brisbane International.

"I thought I did quite well. I think maybe both of us at the beginning of the match were a bit nervous, a few errors from the back of the court from both of us. But I think as the match went on, the rallies were a bit more entertaining," Murray said on court after the match. "I think for the first match of the new year after quite a long break, it was alright."

The 2012-13 Brisbane champion was limited to 12 matches in 2018 after undergoing hip surgery in January. And while Murray showed flashes of his former self in his comeback, earning two wins against Top 20 players in the ATP Rankings, he ultimately went 7-5 for the year.

But Murray, who is now 10-0 at the season-starting ATP 250 event, is beginning his return towards the top of the sport. The 31-year-old broke Duckworth three times in the one-hour, 28-minute clash, saving four of the five break points he faced.

"It's been really hard. Eighteen months, a lot of ups and downs. It was tricky just to get back on the court competing again," Murray said. "I'm happy I'm back out here competing again. I want to try enjoy it as much as I can."

It was an encouraging performance for Murray, who was made to sprint to the net several times by Duckworth in a rematch of their 2018 US Open encounter, won by Murray in four sets. The Scot, currently No. 240 in the ATP Rankings, also hit a couple of highlight reel shots. He showed how much it means to him as well, consistently pumping his fist and trying to get Duckworth’s home crowd on his side.

Murray will next face Russian fourth seed Daniil Medvedev, who won his first three ATP Tour titles in 2018. It will be the first FedEx ATP Head2Head meeting between the pair.

In a repeat of last year's championship match, defending champion Nick Kyrgios fired 44 aces to once again overcame the challenge of Ryan Harrison in Queensland. The eighth seed, who held three match points in the second set, improved to 5-0 in Brisbane with a 7-6(5), 5-7, 7-6(5) victory over the American after two hours and eight minutes.

"I don't think ," said Kyrgios. "I needed every single one of them today."

Kyrgios won 79 per cent of first-serve points (63/80) throughout his fourth FedEx ATP Head2Head meeting with the World No. 62 (Kyrgios leads 4-0) to set a second-round clash against Jeremy Chardy. The 31-year-old Frenchman rallied from a set down to beat Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

"[Jeremy] is one of my good mates on Tour. We always practise together. Pretty much every event," said Kyrgios. "We're always looking to get some hits in. We know how relaxed we are together on court. We always play pretty well against each other. So I'm really looking forward to it. I know that he knows what I'm going to bring, and I know how good he can be."

On the bottom half of the draw, Denis Kudla earned a second-round match against second seed Kei Nishikori with a 7-6(5), 6-7(2), 6-4 victory against 2018 Next Gen ATP Finals qualifier and compatriot Taylor Fritz. Kudla was unable to convert any of the four match points he earned in the second set, but he withstood 22 Fritz aces in the match to win after two hours and 24 minutes.
