Andy Murray Accepts A Wild Card Into Shanghai

Former World No. 1 Andy Murray has accepted a wild card into the Rolex Shanghai Masters, which will take place from 6-13 October, the tournament announced on Thursday.

"I’m really looking forward to be going back to Shanghai, a tournament I have had success at in the past," Murray said, according to the tournament's website. "Thanks to the tournament for a wild card. It’s great to be able to continue my comeback and play more tennis in China. Shanghai is a great city; I feel comfortable there and the fans are always supportive."

Murray has long enjoyed success at China’s ATP Masters 1000 event, where he has tallied a 22-3 record, lifting the trophy on three occasions. The 2010, 2011 and 2016 titlist won the first 12 matches he played at the tournament, and he also made the championship match in 2012 (l. to Djokovic).

The 32-year-old continues to battle back into form after undergoing hip surgery after the Australian Open. Murray made his singles return at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati, and his other tour-level appearance came at the Winston-Salem Open. The 45-time tour-level titlist, who opted not to compete at the US Open in singles or doubles, reached the Round of 16 at the Rafa Nadal Open by Sotheby’s, an ATP Challenger Tour event held in the last week of August.

Although he has not yet won a tour-level singles match during his comeback, Murray has enjoyed doubles success, winning the Fever-Tree Championships (w/ Lopez) and reaching two additional quarter-finals. The Scot is scheduled to compete in Zhuhai, Beijing and Shanghai during the Asian Swing.

Andy Murray reveals when he may reach the level of Federer, Nadal, Djokovic

Former world no. 1 Andy Murray has been working hard to make a comeback after a nasty hip injury and get back where he belongs. After numerous struggles and delays in 2018, Andy had to undergo another hip surgery at the end of January this year, having a metal cap placed at the top of his femur that finally put the pain away (so-called "Birmingham hip").

Staying under the radar for a few months, Murray made the best possible return at Queen's, winning the title with Feliciano Lopez and embracing more doubles challenges in Eastbourne, Wimbledon, Washington, Montreal and Cincinnati.

Still not finding the desired rhythm on the singles court (early losses in Cincinnati, Winston-Salem and Rafa Nadal Open), Andy will try to change that in the following months and get himself in the best starting position ahead of the 2020 season when he hopes to reach the level he had before the injury and fight for significant titles again.

The Briton will endure busy fall to gather matches, entering Zhuhai, Beijing, Shanghai and Antwerp and hoping for best possible results and necessary momentum ahead of 2020. Instead of playing more Challengers, Murray has decided to fight and test his skills on the highest level, eager to get back where he once was and maybe challenge Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic again next season.

Andy is also ready to help his country in the upcoming Davis Cup Finals if he earns the spot in the team but he is not that confident about competing at the inaugural ATP Cup in January. "The last tournament was at Challenger level, which was good for me.

We had good crowds at Rafa Nadal Open and it was different, I haven't played at that level for 14 or 15 years but I enjoyed it," Murray said. "I am just happy to be healthy again, I would like to be playing at a higher level but it was fun for me out there.

Now I don't have any limitations on what I can't do. I am certainly still a little bit slow in terms of where I would like to get to. I'm thinking that in the next four or five months that is going to get better. Each week I have felt better but performances haven't necessarily shown that, in terms of results.

But I have been feeling physically better. For years, I competed against Federer, Nadal and Djokovic, although I haven't won every time against them. I have lost more than I have won but I always went out onto court feeling like I could win.

I don't know if I would enjoy going out on the court against them knowing that I am going to lose or feeling like I had no chance! That would probably be psychologically quite challenging for me. But maybe in four or five months, I can get there.

I need to be patient and not expect too much too soon. The skill is still there, I just physically need to get a little better and hopefully over time I get a little bit faster and I think I will. If I am selected, I will play Davis Cup.

I don't want to play or be selected just because four years ago I played really well. The Davis Cup should be based on who the best players are and the best players who give us a chance of winning. Right now, I am not playing as well as Dan Evans and Kyle Edmund or Cameron Norrie.

Potentially I can play doubles, I would like to help and be in the team and play singles but if I was asked to play doubles I would probably do that."

Murray: 'I Don't Know How Far I'm Going To Get On My Comeback'

Andy Murray has reached the highest highs that tennis has to offer, climbing to No. 1 in the ATP Rankings, winning 45 tour-level titles and plenty more. But now, eight months on from hip surgery, the 32-year-old is World No. 413, and he knows he has a long way to go to regain his best form.

“Physically I need to improve if I want to compete consistently at this level whereas, before, I was competing and I was uncomfortable, but I was still playing at quite a high level,” Murray said. “I don’t know how far I’m going to be able to get now on my comeback. I don’t know how much improving I still have to do or if I’m going to be able to. But I’m in no pain just now, so I might as well give it a shot and see how far I will go with the recovery.”

Murray starts a busy month at the inaugural Huajin Securities Zhuhai Championships, the first of four tournaments he will play in four weeks. After this event, the Scot will travel to Beijing, Shanghai and Antwerp to get in as many matches as he can just more than one month after Cincinnati, where he played his first singles match since his hip surgery.

“I think before two or three years ago, I wouldn’t have entered four tournaments in a row because I would have expected to do well in tournaments. Over here in China I’ve always played pretty well, so I wouldn’t have done that in the past. But the position I’m in now is different. I’m not playing at the same level as I was three years ago, and physically I still need to improve,” Murray said. “So between now and the end of the year, I need to play matches and I’m not guaranteed to win matches every single week and I could draw the top seeds in the first round.

“When I’m at the events I get good practice with top players, so my body is getting used to playing at this pace again and this level again… I’d like to try to get 12 to 15 matches between now and the end of the year so my body gets used to competing and playing matches consistently again. I hadn’t done that for two years. It’s been a really long time, so it takes time for your body to build up.”

Results have not come easily for Murray since his singles return at the Western & Southern Open. Frenchman Richard Gasquet defeated him there in two sets before American Tennys Sandgren, his first-round opponent in Zhuhai, ousted him in straight sets at the Winston-Salem Open.

Murray then competed at an ATP Challenger Tour event for the first time since 2005, reaching the third round of the Rafa Nadal Open by Sotheby’s, held in Mallorca. The Scot showed his grit against Italian Matteo Viola — who went on to make the final — but ultimately fell in a final-set tie-break.

“The second match I played there was quite good. I beat a player ranked 120 in the world in two sets, which was a pretty good win. Then the third match, physically I struggled a lot in that match,” Murray said. “I felt like I was hitting the ball better in the matches [in Spain] than I did over in the States. In terms of that, that was positive.

“I think physically I still have a lot of improving to do if I want to get back to competing on the Tour at the highest level because it showed there that I wasn't quite ready to play many matches in a row.”

Although this is the first edition of this ATP 250 event, Murray has long enjoyed success in China, where he has won five titles. Four of the Top 15 players in the ATP Rankings are in the draw in Zhuhai, a tournament Murray has taken a liking to before the first ball has even been struck.

“I really, really like it… it’s a really nice facility for the players. I think the centre court is a nice stadium, the gym, the food on site is really good. It’s very close to the courts. The hotel is obviously a very nice hotel that we get to stay at,” Murray said. “Here everything is very convenient. It's nice. I've liked it so far.”

Andy Murray is on the board. The Scot earned the first tour-level win of his comeback on Tuesday at the Huajin Securities Zhuhai Championships, avenging an earlier defeat to American Tennys Sandgren 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-1.

Murray lost to Sandgren on 19 August at the Winston-Salem Open in only his second tour-level singles match since undergoing a second hip surgery on 28 January. But the former World No. 1 gradually worked his way into match shape, going 2-1 at the Rafa Nadal Open by Sotheby's, an ATP Challenger Tour event, last month.

Murray: 'Things Are Going In The Right Direction'

Andy Murray isn't sure if he's back to a Top 20 level, but the former World No. 1 admitted his comeback took another massive step on Tuesday at the China Open in Beijing.
The Scot earned his biggest win since undergoing a second hip surgery on 28 January, beating World No. 13 Matteo Berrettini 7-6(2), 7-6(7) to make the second round at the ATP 500.
“I feel like I'm hitting the ball pretty clean,” Murray said. “Things are going in the right direction.”
It is Murray's biggest win by ATP Ranking since more than 12 months ago, when, in September 2018, he beat No. 11 David Goffin at the Shenzhen Open.
The difference, however, is that last year Murray still felt pain daily in his right hip. This year, as he reminded everyone again on Tuesday, he is still pain-free. “Zero pain in my hip,” he said with a smirk.

Murray began his comeback in August at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati, falling to Richard Gasquet in straight sets. He looked tentative and rusty.
“I felt a bit out of place. I didn't really feel like I was playing at a great level,” he said in Beijing.
Murray played another match at the Winston-Salem Open before playing three more at an ATP Challenger Tour event in Mallorca.
It wasn't until last week, however, that Murray began showing glimpses of his former level, avenging his Winston-Salem loss to Tennys Sandgren and taking the opening set against eventual Zhuhai champion Alex de Minaur.
“Last week was a really big step for me in terms of how I felt and how I played in the matches,” Murray said. “Although I lost in the second round, I felt like I was playing tour-level tennis. I was competitive. I was in the match, even the one that I lost. Whereas I didn't feel that in the States. I didn't feel I was in the matches or playing great tennis.”
He ratcheted up his level against Berrettini, coming forward to finish points and chasing down drop shots that he, out of bad habit, was letting go in Cincinnati.
“In terms of the way that I'm moving now, in comparison to a couple of months ago, just my level of confidence in that is much, much higher than what it was a few months ago,” he said.
But Murray, whose ranking has dipped to No. 503, tempered the bubbling enthusiasm surrounding his win against Berrettini, who is in eighth place in the ATP Race To London and made the US Open semi-finals (l. to Nadal) last month.
The Briton, who is 2-3 in his comeback, hasn't felt great after matches and is still adjusting to playing two to three matches in a week. Another test looms on Wednesday against countryman Cameron Norrie.
“Now I just need to try and get the matches, get them consistently, so that I'm used to playing three, four matches in a week,” Murray said.
“Right now, at this level, I don't know if I'm ready to do that or not. So the more I can get through these sort of matches like I did today, I'll get there a little bit quicker.”

Andy Murray continued his return to form on Wednesday at the China Open by reaching his first ATP Tour quarter-final for 12 months.

The former World No. 1, who underwent his second right hip surgery on 28 January, fought hard to beat fellow Briton Cameron Norrie 7-6(6), 6-7(4), 6-1 in two hours and 52 minutes. It is the first time Murray has won two consecutive tour-level matches since his operation.

"I'm tired, I just had a sleep before coming," said Murray. "I'm really tired. That's the first time I've had to do that since I came back... It's something that I need to kind of get used to again, especially playing at this level and that intensity.
