There was no runaway leader for most singles titles in 2019, with Novak Djokovic and Dominic Thiem each lifting five trophies. In Dubai, Roger Federer, who claimed four titles on the season, became the second player to crack the 100-title mark, and he is now within six triumphs of Jimmy Connors' record 109 tour-level trophies.

Biggest ATP Rankings Risers Into Top 100
This season, the two biggest risers in the ATP Rankings came from two opposite experience levels. Jannik Sinner, who turned 18 on 16 August, had never played a tour-level match before 2019. But he won 11 matches, including a season-ending triumph at the Next Gen ATP Finals. The youngest player in the Top 100 is up to a career-high World No. 78, one of eight Italians inside the Top 100.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has climbed as high as World No. 5, but he began this year at No. 259 due to a left knee injury that kept him out for seven months. The Frenchman bounced back, winning titles in Montpellier and Metz this year to finish the season at No. 29.

Serb, Szwajcar i Hiszpan to trzej najbardziej utytułowani tenisiści w historii, mający w dorobku wiele rekordowych osiągnięć. Jednak w ostatnim czasie coraz częściej pojawiają się głosy, że ich dominacja dobiega końca.
- Myślę, że to logiczny i naturalny cykl - odniósł się do tych opinii Djoković podczas konferencji prasowej w Abu Zabi, cytowany przez "The National". - Roger, Rafa i ja mówiliśmy, że tak się stanie, że zostaniemy zastąpieni w pierwszej "trójce" rankingu, a turnieje wielkoszlemowe zaczną wygrywać nowi faceci. Staramy się, by przedłużyć ich oczekiwanie, jednak jest to nieuniknione i oni każdego roku coraz bardziej się zbliżają.

Zapytany o cele na nadchodzące rozgrywki, odparł: - Najważniejsze będą turnieje wielkoszlemowe i igrzyska olimpijskie. Bardzo też doceniam rozgrywki drużynowe - Puchar Davisa i ATP Cup.
Oficjalną rywalizację w sezonie 2020 belgradczyk rozpocznie w ATP Cup (3-12 stycznia). Następnie zagra w Adelajdzie (12-18 stycznia) i wielkoszlemowym Australian Open (20 stycznia - 2 lutego). - Chcę dobrze rozpocząć sezon w ATP Cup i mam nadzieję, że będę w najwyższej formie w Australian Open. Historycznie to mój najlepszy turniej wielkoszlemowy i tam grałem swój najlepszy tenis. Bardzo lubię występować w Melbourne - stwierdził.

W tym tygodniu Djokovicia czeka jednak występ w pokazowym turnieju w Abu Zabi, w którym będzie bronił tytułu. Pierwszy mecz rozegra w piątek, kiedy to zmierzy się ze Stefanosem Tsitsipasem. - Okres pomiędzy sezonami nie był dla mnie długi, ale był pozytywny. Dobrze wypocząłem i spędziłem czas z rodziną. Teraz czekam na nowe wyzwania w 2020 roku. Mam nadzieję na dobry początek sezonu i zobaczymy, dokąd mnie to zaprowadzi - powiedział.

W ubiegłym tygodniu Novak Djoković wystąpił w pokazowym turnieju w Abu Zabi. Rywalizację zakończył na trzecim miejscu. Najpierw przegrał 6:3, 6:7(4), 4:6 ze Stefanosem Tsitsipasem, a następnie pokonał 7:5, 6:3 Karena Chaczanowa. - W tym roku turniej był rozgrywany we wcześniejszym terminie niż w ubiegłych latach, ale i tak cieszę się, że tu wystąpiłem. Musi być to coś większego niż moje własne osiągnięcia. Coś związanego ze spuścizną, która inspirowałaby życie innych, zwłaszcza dzieci - wyjaśnił.



- Musisz stale dostarczać sobie paliwa - kontynuował. - Na koniec dnia głównym źródłem wszystkiego jest to, czy lubię albo czy nie lubię tenisa. We mnie miłość do tego sportu wciąż jest obecna. Uwielbiam rywalizować, a trzymanie rakiety i gra dają mi radość. I myślę, że jest to klucz.

- Aby rywalizować na najwyższym poziomie, potrzebujesz celów dziennych, tygodniowych, miesięcznych i rocznych. Dla mnie celem jest bicie rekordów. To mnie motywuje do konkurowania. Novak Djokovic touched down on Monday in Brisbane as he looks to continue his pattern of success in Australia at the inaugural ATP Cup.

The No. 2 player in the ATP Rankings will kick off his 2020 campaign by leading Team Serbia. They’ll take on France (led by Gael Monfils), South Africa (led by Kevin Anderson) and Chile (led by Cristian Garin) in Group A.
It’s great to be back. It’s been awhile since I was last here in Brisbane. I can’t wait for the inaugural ATP Cup event this year,” Djokovic said. “Australia always puts on a great show for tennis during January. Any tennis event is successful in Australia and I’m sure the ATP Cup will be a blast. I’m inviting all the nations to come out and support us, especially the Serbian community.”

Djokovic Meets Australia's Mascot, The Koala

Team Serbia kicks off their ATP Cup run on Saturday
Novak Djokovic admires the simplicity, the restorative aspects of the koala lifestyle. The irresistible animals rarely stray from their eucalyptus trees in eastern Australia and sleep for up to 18 hours a day.

Djokovic, however, the No. 2 player in the FedEx ATP Rankings, doesn't think it'd be such a good idea for him or Team Serbia to act more like koalas at the ATP Cup.

“I don't think the koala lifestyle would help us tennis players a lot, even though at times we could definitely learn something from them,” Djokovic said on Wednesday while standing next to a couple of cuddly koalas at the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary in Brisbane. “Sometimes the simple things are the best things, just relaxing and being present, kind of recuperating and being outdoors, being in the nature.”

Serbia's No. 1 grew up exploring his country's mountains, and that's where Djokovic learned to appreciate wildlife.

“I love animals, spending times close to them but respecting their space, which I think is very important because we sometimes as people try to act as the most dominant species, which we consider ourselves to be. But I truly believe we all should live in harmony and respect, and there is a higher order of nature that we should all be aware of,” Djokovic said. “I'm very close to a koala at the moment. I see that they're sleeping and resting so I don't want to disturb them too much, but it's definitely a very unique experience.”

The Serbian made the visit with mixed emotions. Koalas have been among those affected by the recent bushfires that have devastated parts of Australia and killed at least 18, according to the BBC. The federal government estimated last week that up to 30 per cent of koalas in Australia's New South Wales mid-north coast may have died. There also have been reports of people rescuing and giving water to endangered koalas.

"It was really sad to hear how many people and animals are affected by these fires, historical fires," Djokovic said. "Mixed emotions but I'm glad in a way that we can talk about it in public and raise awareness, send our support and all our hearts to the people and animals affected."

Djokovic and Team Serbia aiming the spotlight on koalas was also appreciated by local officials.

“We just think it's a fantastic time to be bringing people together. It's such a tough time for some of our neighbours down south. It's fantastic to see Team Serbia here, and to know that we're going to have fantastic games of tennis to make people happy," said Vicki Howard, councillor for Central Ward and Chair of Field Services.

Djokovic and his ATP Cup teammates Dusan Lajovic, Nikola Milojevic, Nikola Cacic and Viktor Troicki may not be ready to sleep for more than two-thirds of the day. But they have been adapting the koala lifestyle at times – enjoying each other's company off the court and relaxing away from the tennis. They've been employing their usual routines, those of hard-working tennis players, however, most of the time Down Under.

Serbia plays its first match on Saturday against South Africa. “We stay together and play different sports. We spend quality time and it's fun, because the concept of ATP Cup is a team concept, team format, and so it does give us an opportunity to represent our country and be a part of the team, which is not something that we do experience throughout the year very often,” Djokovic said.

"It does feed you with energy, with motivation and all of the guys on the team are friends of mine in private life as well. So it's a lot of intensity on the court, great practices, but also a lot of fun and relaxation off the court."
