Thompson's Tough Task: Tackling Tennis' Towers

Some players look at their draws, and others don’t pay much attention to it. But for Jordan Thompson, his New York Open draw was tough to miss, literally and figuratively. The World No. 63 beat 6’11” Ivo Karlovic on Tuesday 6-3, 7-6(2) and next, he will face 6’10” John Isner, the top seed.

“When I saw the draw I was like ‘Oof, that’s a tough one,'” Thompson told ATPTour.com. “It’s pretty funny when you play a guy 6’11" and then play a guy 6’10". It doesn’t happen too often.”

Karlovic and Isner are No. 1 and No. 2 in career aces, respectively. So inevitably, Thompson knew that it would be tough to earn many breaks. He earned five break points against Karlovic, and converted once in his win.

“Serve and return are the biggest parts of tennis, so when you’re playing someone that big, I think you focus just a little bit harder just because it’s the best part of their game and you’ve got to try to diffuse it,” Thompson said. “Against those sort of guys, I’m just trying to focus on making them play and trying to build pressure because building pressure against those types of guys is incredibly tough. So just try to make as many balls as possible… any return in is a good one.”

The obvious challenge is trying to find a way into the service games of players like Karlovic and Isner. But Thompson said that knowing he won’t get many opportunities also adds a small burden during his own service games.

“When you play those sorts of guys you do feel a little bit more pressure because they can race through service games and I’m about a foot smaller than those boys, so I guess there’s a little bit of pressure,” Thompson said. “I’m an all-around player, so I don’t put too much pressure on my own serve because I can try to win points other ways.”

Just because Karlovic and Isner lead the ATP Tour in career aces doesn’t mean they play exactly similar games. According to Thompson, outside of the serve, those men use different strategies.

“Ivo is more of a serve-and-volleyer. John tries to stay back and hunt for forehands. I’d say John is better from the back of the court,” Thompson said. “Both have got a great serve. John is a little bit younger. I don’t know what the difference is between them. I’d say between the serve and volleying and staying back, that’s the only difference.

“It’s coming down from such a height, they’re basically the same height. They’re close to seven-feet tall. I don’t really know if there’s that much of a difference. Maybe Isner has a little bit more spin on his. They’re both pretty similar.”

My Point: Get The Players' Point Of View

Thompson will hope that his win against Karlovic will help propel him to victory against Isner, who defeated him in last year’s New York Open. In the quarter-finals, the American struck 16 aces en route to a 6-4, 6-1 triumph against the Aussie.

“I had a pretty tough day at the office because it is indoors and there’s no outside factors that can [affect anything],” Thompson said. “Maybe if there’s a bit of wind it’s a little bit harder to serve but there’s none of that in here. It’s perfect conditions in here, so I guess it’s a little bit tougher to break serve.”

Aussie Jordan Thompson weathered a dangerous test by moving past big-serving Croat Ivo Karlovic 6-3, 7-6(2) to reach the second round. Next up for Thompson is another gentle giant on Tour when he meets top-seeded American John Isner, who defeated him in the quarter-finals last year in New York.

Aussie Jordan Thompson exacted revenge on top seed John Isner for the upset of the week in New York. Twelve months after decisively falling to the American at this event, Thompson turned the tables with a 7-6(2), 6-7(3), 6-3 win to reach the quarter-finals.

”I’m pretty stoked about that. That was a tough match,” Thompson said. “I didn’t get too many looks at Isner’s serve, but managed to get the one break and held onto it.”

Isner and Thompson exchanged service holds in the first set to bring up a tie-break, where the Aussie raced through the first five points to take the early advantage. There were also no breaks in the second set, but it was Isner who stepped up in the tie-break this time. A forehand error with Thompson serving at 0/1 gave Isner a mini-break and the American eventually brought the match to a deciding set.

After more than two hours of play, a backhand volley error from Isner handed Thompson the lone break of the night and a 2-0 lead in the decider. The Aussie battler maintained his lead and closed out play after two hours and 32 minutes.

Thompson & De Minaur: Sydneysiders Shining At The US Open

Two Aussies into the fourth round in New York for the first time since 2001
Alex de Minaur remembers meeting Jordan Thompson nearly a decade ago. The #NextGenATP Aussie hit with his older countryman a couple of times and their friendship has grown since.

Now, from Sydney to Flushing Meadows, they make up the first Aussie pair to reach the fourth round of the US Open since Lleyton Hewitt and Patrick Rafter in 2001.

“It [is] just amazing to see him grow up and get to the point where he has gone and me trying to follow in his footsteps,” De Minaur said.

Thompson has quietly worked through the draw. On his 20th Grand Slam main draw appearance, he is into the fourth round for the first time. He will play 27th seed Borna Coric for a spot in the quarter-finals.

“[I’m] in the fourth round and I feel like I’ve got nothing to lose,” Thompson, who is 26, said. “It’s another opportunity, but just happy to be there and I’ll give it my all as I always do.”

Thompson doesn’t sport a flashy game, nor does he grab attention with his actions on or off the court. But his improvement over the past few years is evident. In 2018, he earned one tour-level victory. Last season, he won 26 of them.

"I've been labelled as a pretty quiet guy and a man of few words,” Thompson told ATPTour.com last year. “I'm happy to just go about my business and let the other [Aussie] guys have bigger profiles. I like remaining under the radar.”

That will be tougher as Thompson is one of the last 16 players remaining in this Grand Slam event. De Minaur is certainly happy for his friend.

“It's amazing. I've known him for a very long time. We have hit together. He's like a big brother for me,” De Minaur said. “It's amazing to see us both [go through] and him leading the way… Hopefully we can just keep it going. He's playing some great tennis, and I'm really happy for him, that's for sure.”

Thompson won his third-round match against Mikhail Kukushkin on Friday in straight sets. De Minaur had far more trouble on Saturday against 11th seed Karen Khachanov. The Russian at one point won eight consecutive games to seemingly seize all the momentum.

But De Minaur bit down and dug his teeth into the match, sprinting from corner to corner to force Khachanov to maintain his high level. The Aussie rallied from two sets to one down to reach the fourth round of the US Open for the second consecutive year.

It’s only fitting that this year he joined Thompson.

“It's amazing, these stats. I'm so happy that I'm able to do it with a fellow Sydneysider as Thommo,” said De Minaur, who will next play big-serving Canadian Vasek Pospisil. “We're both out here getting some wins and I couldn't be happier for us both. Hopefully we can just keep it going.”
