Krajinovic, Facing Nadal, Is Finally Relaxed In Indian Wells

2017 Paris finalist playing freely with few ATP Rankings points to defend
Filip Krajinovic has learned his ATP Masters 1000 lesson: No more finals. Sixteen months ago, the Serbian made his maiden Masters 1000 title match at the 2017 Rolex Paris Masters (l. to Sock).
The surprise run catapulted him 33 spots up the ATP Rankings, from No. 77 to No. 34. But it also saddled him with dread.
Krajinovic spent most of the first seven months of 2018 injured (left foot, left ankle and hand). By the time he came back feeling healthy, in September, the Rolex Paris Masters, in early November, was already looming.
“It was really tough because I was No. 26 in the world, and I was seeded everywhere and following results, and I couldn't play. That's tough, and I know the end of the year will come and I will lose a lot of points, and start from the beginning again,” Krajinovic said.
This week at the BNP Paribas Open, however, he's smiling and laughing, almost gleefully. His Paris ATP Ranking points came off in November after he lost in the first round, and, as he knew would happen, his ranking fell 59 spots, from No. 34 to No. 93. “I'm free,” he said.

But he's into the another fourth round at a Masters 1000, and he knows not to make that same mistake again. “I make sure I'm not playing finals. It's better to play quarters,” he said, kidding.
He'll play for a spot in the Indian Wells quarter-finals on Wednesday, against second seed Rafael Nadal, a matchup that might cause more sleepless nights for the Serbian.
He was so anxious and excited during his Paris run that he couldn't rest. “After the second round, I really couldn't sleep. A lot of pressure, first time playing Masters quarter-final. For me, it was really hard. I couldn't really eat,” he told ATPTour.com last year.
His lack of a diet, he said, probably affected him in the final against American Jack Sock, who clinched his 2017 Nitto ATP Finals bid with the title. But Krajinovic said that's in the past, mostly.
“It's easier because now I have more experience. I've played with the big guys already so many times. I'm much more relaxed... Paris was so exciting, and it was the first time,” Krajinovic said. “Now everything's much better, much better... I can sleep fine.”
Although Krajinovic, who spoke before Nadal beat Diego Schwartzman on Tuesday to secure his place in the fourth round, didn't promise any sweet dreams if he were to meet the all-time Masters 1000 champion.
“We'll see, if I play against Rafa, if I'm going to sleep,” Krajinovic said, smiling.
The unlikely Paris finish has been a cradle of motivation and inspiration for him. Krajinovic, playing in only his second tour-level event of the year, qualified and reached the semi-finals before facing John Isner, who was going for his Nitto ATP Finals debut.
But Krajinovic denied the American a feel-good ending, winning 7-6(5) in the third. The Serbian served for the match and smacked a forehand winner crosscourt, cuing the celebration.
He raised his arms and fell to the ground. His coach ripped off his T-shirt, and the main character in the drama cried.
Krajinovic knows the scene well. He's watched the tie-break more than hundreds of times.
“1,000 times,” he said, when asked how often he's watched it. “That last point I will never forget, when I hit that forehand winner... I watch that match sometimes when I'm really sad... That's something I'm always going to remember.”
More than bringing back good feelings, however, the clip reminds him of his potential and of how he wants to play this year, starting Wednesday in Indian Wells.
“I know if I play well I can be dangerous for every player. I'm 27 years old. I will play many more years, and I hope one day I'm going to play a final again, you never know,” he said.

Serbian World No. 103 Filip Krajinovic rallied from behind in a third-set tie-break to upset 30th-seeded Swiss Stan Wawrinka 5-7, 6-2, 7-6(5) in the first meeting between the pair. The 27-year-old, who trailed 2-4 in the 'breaker, continued his recent good form which saw him come through qualifying in Indian Wells to beat David Goffin and Daniil Medvedev before falling to Rafael Nadal in the fourth round.

In the third round, Krajinovic will play the winner of Roger Federer and Radu Albot. Wawrinka, who slipped to 11-7 on the year, lost in the third round to Federer in Indian Wells.

Qualifier Filip Krajinovic broke down the serve of second-seeded Croatian Borna Coric on Friday in a 6-4, 7-5 victory to book his place in the Hungarian Open semi-finals.

Krajinovic fought back from a 2-4 deficit in the first set, at a point when Coric had lost just three of his service points in as many games. The 27-year-old saved three set points on serve at 4-5 in the second set, prior to breaking Coric in the next game.

Filip's Great Escape: Krajinovic Claims Heilbronn Crown

In just 48 hours, Filip Krajinovic experienced a full spectrum of emotions at the NECKARCUP in Heilbronn.

In Saturday's semi-finals, the top-seeded Serbian trailed 1-6, 1-4 against Stefano Travaglia. Down a set and a double break, it was all but done and dusted. His Italian opponent was dialed in and he was struggling to find any rhythm. But Krajinovic would mount one of the greatest comebacks of the year, clawing back to force a decider and eventually book his spot in the championship.

Elated and relieved, Krajinovic entered Sunday's final in search of a second title at the ATP Challenger Tour event. In 2017, he emerged victorious and history would repeat itself on a warm yet overcast afternoon. With the trophy on the line, he would concede an early break to Belgium's Arthur De Greef, but streaked to the finish line from there. The Serbian reeled off 12 of the next 14 games to take the title 6-3, 6-1.

It was Krajinovic's 10th Challenger title in total and first in two years. The 27-year-old is back in the Top 60 of the ATP Rankings, capping a dominant six-week stretch that also included a Challenger final in Sophia Antipolis and run to the title match at the ATP 250 in Budapest. He is 15-2 since the beginning of April.

But the drama was not finished after Krajinovic lifted the Heilbronn trophy. Sitting one spot out of the Roland Garros main draw cut and having missed the deadline to sign in for qualifying, anxiety was high in the Serbian's camp. He needed one more withdrawal ahead of the 10am deadline on Monday (when qualifying begins) to punch his ticket to the second Grand Slam of the year. And with just hours to spare, Andrey Rublev would oblige, pulling out with a lingering back injury. Krajinovic's dream week proved to be extra special.

In other action, Joao Menezes became the 18th first-time winner this year, claiming his maiden Challenger title on the clay of Samarkand, Uzbekistan. He defeated Corentin Moutet 7-6(2), 7-6(7).

Jason Jung lifted a trophy for a fourth straight year, prevailing on the hard courts of Gwangju, South Korea, on Sunday. Jung defeated Dudi Sela 6-4, 6-2, capping an impressive week that saw him drop just one set.

And in Lisbon, Roberto Carballes Baena earned a second title of the season with a stunning comeback over Facundo Bagnis. Trailing by a set and a break, he fought back for a 2-6, 7-6(5), 6-1 win. Also the champion on home soil in Murcia, Spain, last month, he is now 7-3 in Challenger finals.

Krajinovic's Roland Garros Journey: From Missing Deadline To Facing Tsitsipas

In a matter of weeks, Serbian Filip Krajinovic has gone from sleepless, worry-filled nights to the best opportunity of his season – a third-round matchup with Greece's #NextGenATP star Stefanos Tsitsipas at Roland Garros.
Weeks ago, however, Krajinovic was fretting that he'd miss his favourite Grand Slam. The 27-year-old forgot to sign up for the Roland Garros qualifying field.
That wouldn't be a big deal, so long as the No. 60th-ranked player in the ATP Rankings automatically made the main draw.
But when the field was formed, six weeks before the start of Roland Garros, Krajinovic's ATP Ranking was just outside of the main draw cut-off. He needed three people to withdraw.

South African Kevin Anderson pulled out, and, with three weeks to go until the start of Roland Garros, Krajinovic needed only two people to withdraw. “I thought for sure I'm going to get in,” he said.
Another player withdrew, but with 10 days to go, Krajinovic was close to losing hope. “I was like, 'Please, please, somebody pull out', and then nobody did,” he said.
At the last minute, however, Krajinovic got a break when Andrey Rublev pulled out, and the Serbian, who had made other tournament plans, was heading to Roland Garros.
He's taken full advantage of his opportunity. Krajinovic upset 32nd seed Frances Tiafoe of the U.S. 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 in his opener and made the third round with another five-setter against Spain's Roberto Carballes Baena 6-4, 6-4, 6-7(1), 3-6, 8-6.
“I feel really good physically,” Krajinovic said. “I was working really hard. and I felt like I can play five sets, for sure, no problem.”
He's never faced Tsitsipas, the sixth seed in Paris who's seeking his first fourth round at Roland Garros. But Krajinovic will have nothing to lose – he didn't even think he'd make the first round.
