Vasek Pospisil claimed his first ATP World Tour singles win since March on Monday as he defeated Marinko Matosevic 6-3, 6-2 to reach the second round of the Topshelf Open in ‘s-Hertogenbosch.
Back on his preferred grass after a frustrating few weeks on clay, Pospisil saved all five break points he faced and converted three of his four chances on Matosevic’s serve to prevail in 63 minutes. Matosevic dropped to a 3-14 record on the season.
"It was a good match," said Pospisil. "I felt like I played well throughout the whole match. I executed my game plan well. I was serving well, which is obviously crucial on this surface. There were maybe a few nerves at the end there, but overall I'm really happy and pleased with the way I played today. I served well and I played aggressive on the return games, which I think was key to taking those opportunities."
The 24-year-old Pospisil goes on to face Gilles Muller, who fired 13 aces as he beat Marsel Ilhan 6-0, 7-5 in 53 minutes.
"It'll be a very tough match," said Pospisil. "He's one of the best servers in the game and on grass that's obviously a big challenge. We both like playing on grass, so it'll be a tough match for both of us and a fun one to play in."
Home favourite Robin Haase notched his sixth win of the season as he dismissed Blaz Kavcic 6-2, 7-5. The Dutch wild card struck 11 aces and converted five of his 11 break points in the 74-minute match.
Fourth seed Guillermo Garcia-Lopez will open his campaign in the second round against Romanian wild card Marius Copil, who defeated Jarkko Nieminen 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 in the last match of the day.

Spoiler:
Q. You must be absolutely exhausted.
VASEK POSPISIL: Yeah. I mean, it was a long day, for sure. Pretty tired right now, but I have a day off tomorrow, so that's good.
Q. Andy says there is a possibility the fatigue may play a part on Wednesday. Will you be fresh? Will you be ready?
VASEK POSPISIL: I think so, yeah. I mean, obviously I played a lot of tennis, but, you know, one day recovery is a lot. So, you know, I can sleep well tonight. Just have a full day of rest tomorrow. Do a lot of, you know, recovery and stuff. Then come out strong on Wednesday and take it to him.
Q. Will you just be letting the body relax?
VASEK POSPISIL: I will hit tomorrow. Lightly.
Q. Can you kind of sum up the singles match?
VASEK POSPISIL: Yeah. I mean
Q. You have forgotten about it?
VASEK POSPISIL: That was five sets ago (smiling).
I mean, it was tough. I had maybe, you know, didn't have the start I wanted to have, and then I had chances well, you know, I got unlucky a little bit in the breaker there.
You know, I made a couple of good adjustments on my return games.
And even being down two sets, it didn't faze me. I feel I'm pretty tough that way. Even if I'm down, I'm always finding ways to come back and trying to. So I did a good job.
I was serving well and I made the right adjustments tactically on the return.
Played well the rest of the way.
Q. Did it help you having been through a five setter on the Wimbledon show court two days ago?
VASEK POSPISIL: Yeah. I mean, for sure, you know, it was extra confidence, for sure, that I had done it just two days before.
But, you know, I wasn't really thinking about it too much. Maybe subconsciously that made a difference. But, you know, I'm just, you know, working on other things and trying to, you know, stay in it and be there mentally, which I have done a great job of that this week.
Q. Can you walk me through your morning. When did you get up? What did you do before you got here?
VASEK POSPISIL: Well, I woke up...
Q. That was a long time ago.
VASEK POSPISIL: I'm actually trying to think. I woke up at 8:00, and then, you know, did some things for 30 minutes, just like some things that I have been working on.
And then I had breakfast, came here around, I don't know, 9:15. Warmed up 40 minutes for the warmup. And then I got my body ready and had a light hit at 10:00, and then just got my gear ready. Then went on at 11:30.
Q. May I ask what the half hour "things" are?
VASEK POSPISIL: No, it's a secret (smiling).
No, we just, like I said, I said previously the last couple of weeks, I have been working, you know, to be more clutch mentally and, you know, in big moments. Actually, you know, I feel like I'm stepping up my game and I'm, you know, more ambitious than ever right now.
I feel like that the result this week has showed that so far.
Q. What are you reading in your book?
VASEK POSPISIL: Secret.
Q. Secret, as well? Are you writing it in the morning, is that the secret part?
VASEK POSPISIL: I'm looking at the same no, actually, yeah, I have been looking at the same page for the matches, but the book is getting filled up a little bit.
Q. Is it a motivational page?
VASEK POSPISIL: No, honestly just reminders and pointers, things I should be looking at during the match, so that will change a little bit match to match.
But pretty, you know, nothing crazy.
Q. Talk about Andy Murray.
VASEK POSPISIL: Yeah, it's going to be obviously a tough one. You know, he's had a great results here over the years. Obviously, you know, he's the big, one of the big four, as they say.
But I think I'm serving well, I'm playing well, and I will have a good day of rest tomorrow. I know I will have my hands full and I have to go out there and play to the best of my abilities. And that's what I plan on doing.
Q. You played against a British crowd already with James Ward. How beneficial is that that you have already been in that atmosphere?
VASEK POSPISIL: Yeah. I mean, it doesn't really faze me too much playing in front of crowds that are against me. I like playing in front of big crowds, in general. Doesn't matter if they are against me or cheering for me.
Obviously I'd prefer they are on my side, but, you know, I tend to play well in those kind of situations. So I'm not worried about that, really.
Q. You said you have been working on trying to be more clutch. You mentioned it again now. What is it you're doing to do that? Is it a matter of focusing or not thinking about the moment or thinking about the moment?
VASEK POSPISIL: Well, I'm just working on my mental side of the game right now. And I think, yeah, so that's pretty much it. That's pretty much all.
Q. Do you think you would have won that match a year or two ago just in terms of hanging in there when things got bad and being clear headed enough to make the adjustments you had to make?
VASEK POSPISIL: No. I mean, obviously I'm more experienced now, too. I turned 25 a couple weeks ago, I think that made the big difference there (smiling).
No, but, yeah, like I said, I'm more experienced. I'm more and more comfortable now playing best of five matches. I kind of know how to manage it better, I think. That was something that I was struggling with in previous years. I think I have really just kind of figured that out, how to kind of go about long matches like this.
But like I said, you know, it's just being behind. I know it's a long match even if you're down two sets, and the last set is always the toughest one to win. I knew that, and I knew that it would be tough for him to win that last one as long as I stayed in it and showed my presence and showed that I was there. So that's what I tried to do.
And then along with some of the adjustments I made tactically after that, you know, that made the difference.
Q. Can you expand just a little bit on what you mean by the tactical, what adjustments did you make?
VASEK POSPISIL: There are a couple, but to simplify, just that, you know, I was rushing a little bit too much. He likes defense. He likes coming up with, you know, good shots on the run and whatever.
I think I was just making a little bit too many mistakes, trying to be too aggressive and I started mixing the pace better and I changed my positioning on the return. I think that got to him a bit.
Q. What did you do in the roughly two hours' break between singles and doubles?
VASEK POSPISIL: I biked, stretched, and had my recovery shakes. Then just ice bath, just recovered a little bit. Got a light flush. Just all recovery stuff.
Q. In the doubles match, you and Jack got really, really angry.
VASEK POSPISIL: Yeah, yeah.
Q. Tell us all about that.
VASEK POSPISIL: Yeah, it fired us up. But, yeah, the ball hit the racquet of Peers, and he didn't not that he didn't say anything, but he said he wasn't sure if he hit it.
Q. Said he didn't feel it?
VASEK POSPISIL: He said he didn't feel it, but it was clearly not the case, you know. So that got us really fired up.
Q. Did that help?
VASEK POSPISIL: Well, it helped. Because it's the doubles, we almost came back and won maybe because of that.
You know, I think the energy was pretty low and it's also tough to come back after a singles match, and that kind of changed it for us.
And then we started playing better, and, you know, playing more like what we are used to playing, and that gave us, you know, a chance there at the end a little to come back and win it almost.
Q. Are you better when you're angry?
VASEK POSPISIL: No, better when I'm, you know, I guess fully driven and intense.
Q. Do you almost regret that in a way?
VASEK POSPISIL: No. No, because we wanted to win, but it just wasn't there. The synergy wasn't there, and, you know, we were just flat footed, and then that kind of just woke us up.
Q. No, but in terms of you spending an extra hour and a half, extra hour and a half today on top of a long day?
VASEK POSPISIL: Obviously it would be better if we lost in three than 8 6 in the fifth, but you don't know that, right. You're just trying to win the match.
So there are no regrets.
Q. Centre Court last year in the doubles, do you think that will prepare you for playing Andy?
VASEK POSPISIL: Yeah, for sure. I had one Centre Court experience, and it was a great one. I'm looking forward to going out there again, and, you know, give it my best for sure.
Realize that it's going to be a tough, you know, feat to accomplish, to beat Andy here Wimbledon, his home court. I will try and take the positive memories of last year and my good form, you know, this past week.

Wimbledon 2015: Vasek Pospisil speaks to the media following his QF 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 defeat by Andy Murray
Spoiler:
Q. Three sets, but three close ones. What do you think made the difference today?
VASEK POSPISIL: You know, maybe the first set a little bit, he played a great game to break. Also, you know, maybe my energy is a little bit low. Obviously it's the first time in the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam. I was also kind of going out there feeling it out a little bit.
Then I think from then, after that first rain delay, I felt that first set and a half, I was actually pretty comfortable. I felt like I was dictating play. But, yeah, missed a couple balls when I shouldn't have and stuff like that.
But, yeah, I thought it was a good match, a high quality match in general.

Q. To cut to the chase, silly, but the time violation thing, how much did that upset you?
VASEK POSPISIL: Yeah, I mean, I don't know. I think a lot of times these umpires, they seem to just want to be seen. I don't know why they do it at a time like that. I went 30 seconds. How many times do you see the top guys go more than that and they don't get any violation, especially when it's important moments.
But then I go out there and I get a time violation. He said, Yeah, it was right on 30 seconds. I was right about to serve the ball. If he would have waited one second longer, I would have served.
I don't know. I don't agree with that time when he did it. Maybe the second one, yes, but not that, not at 5 All, 30 All. That was ridiculous, in my opinion.
Q. Did it affect you at all?
VASEK POSPISIL: I mean, it's hard to say. I mean, as little as it could have, you know. Of course anytime somebody gives you a violation, it's going to have some kind of effect. It's a direct influence on the match, he gives me a violation. But I don't think it affected me mentally very much.
Q. Such a fun match to watch for the spectators with the contrasting styles you had there. How much of a challenge is it against a guy like Murray to do that?
VASEK POSPISIL: It's tough. I mean, especially here, I feel like this is his home court, too. He's one of those guys, apart from maybe Rafa at the French, Roger here as well, then he's obviously really tough to beat here, as well. I knew that from the beginning.
With all the tennis that I've played, too, this past week, I felt like that didn't go into my favor. I felt a little bit heavy legs as the match was going on.
But, I mean, he played great. I mean, I thought it was a good level.
You know, looking back, maybe it would have been nice to just have played singles this week. But, yeah, I mean, I gave everything I had. I don't think that affected the result too much.
Q. The idea of having to come in and go to net against somebody that passes that well, how much of a challenge is that?
VASEK POSPISIL: Yeah, it's not easy, you know, to do that against him. But you feel like you have to, as well. You have to put pressure on him, don't let him get too comfortable from the baseline, give him too much rhythm.
It's one of my strengths, coming into the net. His passing shots are one of his strengths. You have to kind of feel it out during the match, as well.
Q. Back to the time violation. Is there a sensible way to get around this problem, if it is a problem, like a clock perhaps? Do you have any ideas yourself about what umpires might do?
VASEK POSPISIL: Yeah, I mean, it's tough. Maybe you can have a clock. I wouldn't say a clock would be the right thing because, I mean, if you're an umpire, you just have to kind of use your common sense and your judgment with the moment in the match. If the guys are playing 6 All in the breaker, I'm not saying it it happened at 5 All, 30 All, which is a key moment of the match as well. It was only 30 seconds. There he could have used his judgment a little bit. Maybe say, This is 5 All, 30 All, he's one second away from serving.
It wasn't like I was still wiping the towel or anything. I was literally about to toss. He said, Time violation. I was very surprised.
So, yeah, I think they just need to use their judgment and, you know, try to take little things out of it. You know, maybe their egos, I don't know (smiling). It just didn't seem like the right time to do it for me. I think it's just something maybe they need to, you know, take a course on how to do it.
Q. It's their problem rather than yours?
VASEK POSPISIL: Yeah, I think, yeah. It's just common sense and judgment. That's the only thing. If they do a good job or not, then after they can be yeah, that's all I have to say about it really. I don't know what else to say.
Q. You seemed to have a good rhythm before the second rain break. What was the effect of the roof coming across? Did it feel different? Do you think it benefited him?
VASEK POSPISIL: Well, the rain delay maybe benefited him, except I had the upper hand after the first rain delay. The first one benefited me. I came out and felt like I had the upper hand, just even mentally. It felt like I was there, you know, was dictating play a little bit.
Obviously the second one benefited him.
But that's the way it goes. That's kind of how it is. But, yeah, I mean, I did the best I could with the situation.
With the roof closing, you know, it was a little bit more humid in there, which made it tougher for me, given the amount of tennis I've played and the amount of sets I've played. I started sweating a little bit more. That maybe had a little effect, but not too much.
I also like playing indoors. Growing up in Canada, indoors is my preferred surface, yeah. I like indoors.
Q. Any consultation about whether they were going to close the roof? Did they ask your opinion about it?
VASEK POSPISIL: No, they didn't ask me my opinion, no. I just said, Are they going to close the roof now?
He said, I don't know.
Q. I know it is short after your match, how do you feel going on clay now for Davis Cup?
VASEK POSPISIL: It's tough. Right now I'm very exhausted. I had a couple physical issues, as well, which I have to look into right now.
But, yeah, it's going to be a good challenge. But I'll have a couple days off and, you know, try to be as fresh as I can.
Q. There was an expletive violation in front of the Royal Box in the third set, use of language.
VASEK POSPISIL: Was there? For who?
Q. For you, I thought.
VASEK POSPISIL: No. No. That's why I'm surprised to hear it.
Q. Murray is still good in long rallies. You've played so much tennis. Was that a problem? You were just having to chase down balls? Did the fatigue start to catch up to you a little bit?
VASEK POSPISIL: Well, I mean, the reality is I played a lot of tennis. How much that affected the match is hard to say. But I definitely started feeling a little bit heavy, especially that third set, you know, a little bit at the end of the second, I guess.
Yeah, that's just normal to feel that way. I played, I don't know, 31 sets in seven days or something like that. Then you're going to play Andy, who plays long rallies. Obviously I would have liked to have been more fresh, I think.
But, yeah, I mean, it's still, you know, a great week and I feel like, you know, just the beginning.
Q. That was probably about as undemonstrative as you've been throughout all your matches this week. You usually encourage yourself. Was that a conscious decision because of the occasion, maybe an energy saver, or it just happened that way?
VASEK POSPISIL: After the first rain delay I realized that. I was actually doing a good job of being intense, you know, saying the 'c'mons', getting myself pumped up. I actually felt I did a pretty good job of that. I think the momentum was on my side when I was doing that. Whether or not that was affecting him, I don't know. But it was definitely helping my game.
Yeah, then after the second rain delay, maybe I could have done that a little bit more. But also the fatigue started setting in a little bit. I think, you know, that also takes a bit of energy to be intense. Yeah, so maybe that had a little bit of an effect, as well.
Q. After Milos lost, he talked about various problems he had. He was very assuring he was going to be able to play Davis Cup. You said you had a couple little things. Any chance at all that you are going to pull a Milos?
VASEK POSPISIL: No, I definitely don't want to do that. The only way I would do that is if it was recommended that I don't play. I actually have to go and do some MRIs right now.
But I'm not expecting it to be anything serious. Yeah, the plan right now is 100% to go play, unless the MRIs show something I'm not expecting it to show. It's just a precautionary MRI, so I'll see.
Q. Is this like the NHL, upper body, lower body? Can you tell us what it is?
VASEK POSPISIL: It's my right hand.
Q. The serve?
VASEK POSPISIL: Well, yeah. Late in the second, I had some issues there. But I was actually already a couple days ago, my doubles match and stuff, so...
Q. I know it's quite early yet, but any reflection on the two weeks?
VASEK POSPISIL: Yeah, a great tournament for me. It's my first quarterfinal. I'm very, very pleased with how it went. I felt like I had a tough couple up and down moments this year, tough draw, a couple injuries as well. Last year with the back and stuff.
I felt like it was a very rewarding week with all the hard work I'm putting in, trying to stay patient. I feel like I just did a great job mentally and physically this week, you know, coming back from behind. Winning three five set matches, then coming out in doubles, trying to do that there, which may have hurt me more than helping my cause.
But overall, you know, it was a great showing for me, I think, mentally and physically. Yeah, I'm excited for the rest of the year.
Q. How aware are you of how big this played in Canada, with 'Anything is Pospisil' hashtag?
VASEK POSPISIL: I haven't been going on social media too much. But, yeah, I've heard that it's been on the front page of papers and stuff back home. That's great. My brother is telling me that 'Anything is Pospisil' is trending on Twitter. That's always nice to hear.
Yeah, so that will happen a little more often now.
Q. You've had some good moments in your career obviously before. I guess the key is to take those and carry the momentum and build something big. How can you take this and go through the summer season on your favorite court and use all of this to really put a consistently long period of success together?
VASEK POSPISIL: Yeah, I mean, I can just take confidence from this. You know, I've had some deep runs. I've had some great like you said some great weeks the past couple years where I've beaten top 10 players, where I've gotten to semis and finals of big events, Washington, Rogers Cup, now quarters here.
I've shown that I can beat the best players in the world and have great runs in these events, that my level is there. I just need to be more consistent. That's something that I'm working on now.
Just the last couple weeks I've kind of made the right steps towards that. I think, you know, I can definitely be one of those guys that is more consistent.
That's what I want to be. That's my ambition now. Yeah, so I'm hoping that I can take just confidence from this. Now going on my favorite surface. Grass isn't my favorite surface.
Q. Are you sure?
VASEK POSPISIL: Yeah. Well, it's not my best surface (smiling).
Now with the hard court swing, the summer series, those are my favorite tournaments. I'll be looking to do some damage there.

Qualifier scores career-best win on Saturday at Indian Wells
Qualifier Vasek Pospisil claimed the biggest win of his career in dramatic fashion on Saturday night at the BNP Paribas Open as he stunned World No. 1 Andy Murray 6-4, 7-6(5) to reach the third round in Indian Wells.
"If I pick a handful of great moments in my career, this is definitely one of them," said Pospisil. "To beat the No. 1 player and somebody as accomplished as Andy, one of the greats of the game, is amazing."
The Canadian has endured a turbulent 12 months, seeing his position in the Emirates ATP Rankings drop to No. 135, having been as high as No. 25 three years ago. But under the guidance of new coach Mark Woodforde, whom he began working with in late 2016, Pospisil looked to be back in his best form as he held on to defeat Murray in one hour and 51 minutes.
Having won three matches to reach this stage, Pospisil worked hard to stay with Murray in his fifth meeting with the Scot, whom he had never beaten before. The 26 year old twice fought back from a break down before breaking Murray in the ninth game and sealing the opener.
From 2-4 down in the first set, Pospisil won six straight games to open up a set-and-a-break lead before Murray mounted a comeback. The Scot leveled in the fourth game before forcing the second set into a tie-break. Pospisil came out attacking and earned four match points at 6-2. Murray didn’t concede without a fight, saving the first three match points, but Pospisil held his nerve to take his fourth opportunity with a forehand winner.
"Of course some thoughts come in, especially in the second set," said Pospisil. "It's not every day you're close to beating the No. 1 player in the world."

Pospisil won the doubles title at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden two years ago (w/ Sock) and will look to reach the singles fourth round here for the first time when he faces Dusan Lajovic on Monday.
Murray expressed disappointment with the loss afterwards, but was also full of praise for his opponent.
“I didn't serve particularly well tonight, which didn't help things. And then in the second set, he started to play more aggressively,” said Murray. “I was giving myself decent looks at passing shots. I missed a few tonight. He also came up with some really good reflex volleys on important moments and important points.”

Elsewhere, Gael Monfils overcame a hot start from Barbados qualifier Darian King to record a 3-6, 6-0, 6-1 victory in just under two hours. The 10th-seeded Frenchman, who goes on to face John Isner, was a quarterfinalist in the desert last year (l. to Raonic) and is bidding to win his first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 crown.

asek Pospisil pulled the biggest upset of Indian Wells Week 1, dismissing top seed Andy Murray in the second round, 6-4, 7-6, to advance to a round-of-32 matchup against fellow qualifier Dusan Lajovic.

The Baseline
- The triumph over Murray was actually Pospisil’s fourth consecutive win in Indian Wells. He came through qualifying with victories over Americans Mitchell Krueger and Rajeev Ram, then topped Yen-Hsun Lu in the first round of the main draw.
- Pospisil has enjoyed previous success in the desert, winning the 2015 doubles title with Jack Sock. The pair also teamed to win the 2014 Wimbledon doubles crown, the Series event in Atlanta later that year and Beijing in 2015, when Pospisil climbed to a career-best No. 4 in the individual world doubles rankings.
- Pospisil finished at No. 32, No. 53 and No. 39 in the world in singles from 2013 to 2015, advancing to the Wimbledon quarterfinals in 2015. He struggled in 2016, however, dropping out of the Top 100 for the first time in three years.
- He hired Hall of Famer and renowned doubles player Mark Woodforde as his coach in late 2016, and the pairing has shown some early promise. Thus far in 2017, Pospisil qualified for Doha, picked up Top 50 wins in Davis Cup over Brits Dan Evans and Kyle Edmund, and reached the final of the $100,000 USTA Pro Circuit Challenger in San Francisco.
- In addition to his quarterfinal showing at Wimbledon, Pospisil reached the third round at the Australian Open in 2014 and 2015. At last year’s Open, he defeated Jozef Kovalik in the first round before falling to Kevin Anderson.

Vasek Pospisil: “It feels great to take the title in Busan, it was a long trip and great way to cap it off,” said the Canadian. “I worked on the right things in the days leading up to the event and I really got into a nice flow. I was serving extremely well so It was tough for my opponents to break. It put pressure on them and that gave me a bit more breathing space. I'm glad to be back in the Top 100 and playing at a high level again."

Canadian earns praise of NHL counterparts at Coupe Rogers
Vasek Pospisil played a bit of street hockey when he was younger, but never had the experience of competing against NHL pros. On Saturday in Montreal, he had his opportunity at the annual Coupe Rogers Ball Hockey Challenge.
“It’ll be interesting. I hope I don’t embarrass myself!” said Pospisil ahead of the friendly game at Stade Uniprix.
Facing off against an NHL team that included Jonathan Drouin, Charles Hudon and Michael McCarron of the Montreal Canadiens, he more than held his own. The British Columbia native, who fondly recalls watching the Mario Lemieux-Jaromir Jagr-Ron Francis line as a kid (“that line was pretty crazy”), had his fair share of scoring chances and earned the praise of his hockey counterparts.
“He was good,” said Alex Burrows of the Ottawa Senators. “He was really intense. He’s the same way on the court. He never gives up. Everything is Pospisil, they say. Everything is possible. It’s the same thing here. He worked hard. He had a blast. He was probably the best tennis player playing hockey.”

Dutchman Robin Haase and Canadian former pro Frederic Niemeyer took part in the action alongside Pospisil. Though this version of hockey proved to be new to Haase, he quickly settled in and enjoyed the experience.
“It was fun,” said Haase. “It took me about 20 seconds before I realised it’s not real field hockey, because in real field hockey, which we know in my country, you’re only allowed to play with one side of the stick. Here it’s both sides. That confused me a little bit, but after that it was fine.”
The NHL players, also represented by Antoine Roussel (Dallas Stars), Jonathan Huberdeau (Florida Panthers) and Alexander Killorn (Tampa Bay Lightning), held on to win the game 5-4.
“I think it was a great experience to play against a tennis player,” said Huberdeau. “They were good. They were sweating a lot at the end, so they worked hard. It was great fun.”
