Earlier in the day, Italy’s Matteo Berrettini grew in confidence on serve to beat sixth-seeded Spaniard Fernando Verdasco 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 in two hours and 22 minutes.

Verdasco recovered from 0/40, when serving at 3-3 in the second set, but was broken in the 11th game. Berrettini, the 2018 Gstaad champion, gave little away on serve in the second and third sets — losing just eight of his first-service points. At one stage, the 22-year-old won 12 of 14 points, including a service break for a 3-2 lead in the decider.

Arizona Tennis Classic (Phoenix, Arizona, USA): If the first edition of the Arizona Tennis Classic is any indication of what's to come, the tournament will be a staple on the ATP Challenger Tour for many years.

Matteo Berrettini and Mikhail Kukushkin produced arguably the most dramatic match of the Challenger season thus far, battling for two hours and 50 minutes in Sunday's final. It was the Italian prevailing in the end, ousting his Kazakh opponent 3-6, 7-6(6), 7-6(2) after saving one match point in the second set.

One year after Kukushkin ousted Berrettini in the final edition of the event in Irving, Texas, the Italian got his revenge at the inaugural Challenger 125 in Phoenix. Same week, same final match-up, but a different result under the Arizona sun.

Less than a year after lifting his maiden ATP Tour trophy in Gstaad, Berrettini celebrated his third Challenger title. The 22-year-old Rome native is off to a strong start to 2019, having also reached the semi-finals at the Sofia Open.

With Berrettini entering the week at No. 57 in the ATP Rankings and Kukushkin at No. 43, it was the highest-ranked Challenger final in two years. As a whole, the tournament featured a world-class field, with all 16 seeds inside the Top 100. David Goffin led the pack, but was upset in the quarter-finals by Salvatore Caruso.

Berrettini Records First Upset Of The Week In Budapest

Matteo Berrettini of Italy provided the first surprise win of this year’s Hungarian Open on Monday. In a wild match featuring eight breaks of serve, he hung tough in Budapest to defeat seventh seed Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan 6-4, 6-4.

Berrettini will play Aljaz Bedene in the second round. The Slovenian recovered from being down a double break in the opening set to defeat Aussie Bernard Tomic 7-6(3), 6-3.

Eighth seed Radu Albot continued his fine form this season with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine. The Moldovan broke his opponent twice in each set and secured the win on his fourth match point after one hour and 41 minutes. He’ll take on qualifier Filip Krajinovic of Serbia, who squandered four match points in the second set before recovering to beat Italian Andreas Seppi 6-2, 6-7(3), 7-5.


The first doubles match of the week saw third seeds Ken Skupski and Neal Skupski of Great Britain defeat Mate Valkusz of Hungary and Nenad Zimonjic of Serbia 6-0, 7-6(4).

Tuesday’s schedule features fifth seed Laslo Djere of Serbia, sixth seed and 2018 finalist John Millman of Australia and Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters runner-up Dusan Lajovic of Serbia.

Krajinovic will face 2018 Gstaad winner Matteo Berrettini for the trophy. The Italian needed one hour and 19 minutes to dismiss Rio de Janeiro champion Laslo Djere 6-4, 6-2.

"I have to realise what I did today. I have to recover for this match. It was a short match, but very intense," Berrettini said. "I have to stay focused and prepare for tomorrow."

Berrettini arrived in Hungary on a five-match tour-level losing streak dating back to his second-round loss in Marseille more than two months ago. But he has won three of his four matches in straight sets to reach his second ATP Tour final. This will be Berrettini and Krajinovic's first FedEx ATP Head2Head battle.

"I'm serving really good," Berrettini said. "I hope tomorrow my weapons — my forehand and my serve — will help me to beat him. He's a great guy. He's playing really good coming from the qualies, so he has a lot of confidence. He was Top 30, so he knows how to play tennis. I think it's going to be a great final."

Berrettini defeated qualifier Filip Krajinovic 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 on Sunday to win the Hungarian Open. His aggressive play from the baseline slowly wore down Krajinovic's defences, dropping his racquet to the red clay in celebration after one hour and 41 minutes.

The lucky loser saved one match point to stun World No. 3 Alexander Zverev, before eliminating Grigor Dimitrov to reach the last eight in Barcelona. Jarry jumps 11 places to No. 70 in the ATP Rankings.

The Belgrade resident defeated two seeded opponents at the Hungarian Open to reach his second tour-level championship match. After overcoming Andreas Seppi in the first round, Krajinovic posted victories against eighth seed Radu Albot and second seed Borna Coric to advance to the final four. The 27-year-old dropped four games to beat Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the semi-finals, before a three-set loss to Berrettini in the final. Krajinovic soars 28 positions to No. 77 in the ATP Rankings.
