Berrettini, one of seven Italian men in the second round in Paris, is now 13-3 on clay this year, since returning from a hernia/groin injury. He captured his fourth ATP Tour title at the Serbia Open (d. Karatsev) in April and also reached his first ATP Masters 1000 final in May, finishing runner-up at the Mutua Madrid Open (l. to Zverev).
The 25-year-old will next challenge compatriot Andreas Seppi, winner over Canadian 20th seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in the first round, or Soonwoo Kwon of South Korea.

#NextGen ATP talent Jannik Sinner, who reached the quarter-finals at Roland Garros last year (l. to Nadal), will aim to overcome another Italian, Gianluca Mager, later on Thursday. The 19-year-old Lorenzo Musetti, who holds a 13-8 record this year, face Yoshihito Nishioka with 2018 Roland Garros semi-finalist Marco Cecchinato (l. to Thiem) playing World No. 21 Alex De Minaur.

Italian favourite beats South Korean
Matteo Berrettini moved into the Roland Garros fourth round for the first time on Saturday night with a 7-6(6), 6-3, 6-4 victory over Soonwoo Kwon of South Korea.
The ninth-seeded Italian is now 21-5 on the season after striking 52 winners, including 22 aces, past World No. 91 Kwon in two hours and 11 minutes. He will next prepare to face eighth-seeded Swiss Roger Federer, the 2009 champion, who beat Dominik Koepfer of Germany later in the day.
Berrettini started the week in ninth position in the FedEx ATP Race To Turin and a deep run in the French capital will further boost his chances of qualifying for the Nitto ATP Finals, to be held from 14-21 November this year, for the second time (2019).
The 25-year-old missed almost two months of this season due to a hernia/groin injury and has since compiled a 13-3 record on European clay, which includes capturing his fourth ATP Tour title at the Belgrade Open (d. Karatsev) and a run to the Mutua Madrid Open final (l. to Zverev).

Berrettini, who beat Taro Daniel and Federico Coria in the first two rounds in Paris, was made to work hard in the first set against Kwon, who saved three break points in the second game and four break points at 5-5. Berrettini won the first three points of the tie-break and led 6/3, before Kwon recovered to 6/6. The Italian wrapped up the set with a forehand drop shot winner.
Having won the 54-minute opener, Berrettini relaxed. He clinched a 5-3 advantage in the second set when Kwon hit a forehand long, with the same shot breaking down in the next game. From 3-3 in the second set, Berrettini won six of the next seven games, continually putting Kwon under pressure from the baseline. The Italian won 51 of 61 first-service points (84 per cent).

Federer leads Berrettini 2-0 in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series, but the pair has not met on clay. The Italian hasn’t played Koepfer before.

The Italian reveals the last time he cooked for others and more...
Editor's Note: This feature was originally published on 25 April 2021.
Matteo Berrettini has enjoyed a resurgence of form after dealing with an abdominal injury earlier in the year. The powerful right-hander blasted his way to the Belgrade title and then reached his first ATP Masters 1000 final in Madrid.
ATPTour.com caught up with the Italian to learn the last time...
I missed a flight?
I have never missed a flight before, but I’ve been close and I’m grateful to be a good runner!
I lost something important?
Two or three weeks ago I left my phone in a taxi and I had to call different taxi companies to locate it. I gave them a description of the taxi and thankfully they found the driver and brought it back.
I paid for a court or bought my own tennis balls?
I think I was in Boca Raton a few weeks ago and I bought some tennis balls, around $5 per tube. I didn’t pay for the court.
Being famous or recognised helped?
With COVID and stuff it’s not easy to go anywhere. But there was one time, a long time ago, I was with a friend in a queue and the security guard recognised me, so [they] let us in quicker.
I strung my own tennis racquet?
I used to string my racquets all the time when I was in Rome growing up. It wasn’t cheap to string racquets, so I bought a stringing machine. I probably last strung a racquet a few weeks ago, when I was in Rome. It doesn’t take me long. I’m not professional, but I would definitely be confident to use the racquet in a match.
I cooked for myself or others?
I normally do when I am in Monaco with my girlfriend [WTA player Ajla Tomljanovic], cooking pasta with cheese. It’s amazing and next time we’re together, I’ll cook it for her.
I met my childhood idol?
It was a long time ago. I think the first time I hit with Roger [Federer], in 2015, was a big thing for me. I was so nervous and shaking. I was sweating so much before we started hitting. That's a great memory.
I last took a selfie photo?
I’m not a fan of a selfie, so I wouldn’t ask my idol for a photo. After the 2019 US Open, when I reached the semi-finals, this Roman actor, Carlo Verdone, who is really famous in Italy, came to watch my practice. I was about to ask him for a selfie, but he asked me first. That was cool.
