The Italian reveals the last time he cooked for others and more...
Editor's Note: This feature was originally published on 25 April 2021.
Matteo Berrettini has enjoyed a resurgence of form after dealing with an abdominal injury earlier in the year. The powerful right-hander blasted his way to the Belgrade title, reached his first ATP Masters 1000 final in Madrid and has now triumphed again at Queen's Club.
ATPTour.com caught up with the Italian to learn the last time...
I missed a flight?
I have never missed a flight before, but I’ve been close and I’m grateful to be a good runner!
I lost something important?
Two or three weeks ago I left my phone in a taxi and I had to call different taxi companies to locate it. I gave them a description of the taxi and thankfully they found the driver and brought it back.
I paid for a court or bought my own tennis balls?
I think I was in Boca Raton a few weeks ago and I bought some tennis balls, around $5 per tube. I didn’t pay for the court.
Being famous or recognised helped?
With COVID and stuff it’s not easy to go anywhere. But there was one time, a long time ago, I was with a friend in a queue and the security guard recognised me, so [they] let us in quicker.
I strung my own tennis racquet?
I used to string my racquets all the time when I was in Rome growing up. It wasn’t cheap to string racquets, so I bought a stringing machine. I probably last strung a racquet a few weeks ago, when I was in Rome. It doesn’t take me long. I’m not professional, but I would definitely be confident to use the racquet in a match.
I cooked for myself or others?
I normally do when I am in Monaco with my girlfriend [WTA player Ajla Tomljanovic], cooking pasta with cheese. It’s amazing and next time we’re together, I’ll cook it for her.
I met my childhood idol?
It was a long time ago. I think the first time I hit with Roger [Federer], in 2015, was a big thing for me. I was so nervous and shaking. I was sweating so much before we started hitting. That's a great memory.
I last took a selfie photo?
I’m not a fan of a selfie, so I wouldn’t ask my idol for a photo. After the 2019 US Open, when I reached the semi-finals, this Roman actor, Carlo Verdone, who is really famous in Italy, came to watch my practice. I was about to ask him for a selfie, but he asked me first. That was cool.

The Italian wins his first ATP 500 title
It is safe to say Matteo Berrettini will remember his first appearance at The Queen's Club.
The Italian star beat home favourite Cameron Norrie 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-3 on Sunday to become the first player to win the cinch Championships on debut since 17-year-old Boris Becker in 1985. The top seed did not face a break point in the final to triumph after one hour and 57 minutes.
"[It was an] unbelievable week," Berrettini said during the trophy ceremony. "If I think about [Boris'] name and my name, it’s crazy. I was dreaming about playing this tournament. I was watching [it] when I was a kid and now I had the chance to lift the trophy, so it’s a dream come true."
The champion had previously claimed four ATP Tour trophies, but none had come above the ATP 250-level. This is the first ATP 500 triumph for the 2019 Nitto ATP Finals competitor.
"It was definitely a really good week. When you win a tournament, it means that you're playing good. But I think during the tournament, after every match I was increasing my level," Berrettini said. "I think today I had to play my best tennis, especially in the important points, to win... I'm really happy with my performance overall."
Berrettini enjoyed an impressive run through the London field, lifting the trophy with the loss of just one set. The 25-year-old, who also defeated former World No. 1 Andy Murray, current British No. 1 Daniel Evans and fourth seed Alex de Minaur this week, is the first Italian in the Open Era to win this title.
The World No. 9 dominated on serve throughout the tournament, losing his serve just twice in five matches. Against Norrie, Berrettini blasted 19 aces to overcome the gritty World No. 41. The Italian remains in seventh in the FedEx ATP Race To Turin as he pursues a spot in the Nitto ATP Finals, which will be held from 14-21 November. However, after starting the week 785 points behind sixth-placed Daniil Medvedev, he is within 285 points of the Russian.
The top seed had two opportunities to break in the second set, but Norrie played courageously and he did not lose a point in the tie-break to force a deciding set. The Briton also battled hard to stave off two more break points in the decider, but Berrettini broke through on his third opportunity of the set when Norrie missed a backhand into the net.

"He’s a great player. We never played each other and I think this year he’s shown how he can play on all surfaces," Berrettini said. "He’s made finals, he’s playing great tennis… I’m sure he’s going to lift a title really soon."
Norrie was trying to become the second British singles champion at Queen's Club since World War II and lift his first ATP Tour trophy. This was the 25-year-old's fourth tour-level final and his third of the season. Despite the loss, Norrie is third on the ATP Tour with 29 victories this year.
"I think I played okay. The first set I just donated him the break, and that was the first set. I didn't have any really chances on his serve," Norrie said. "But he's tricky because he's obviously serving very good [on the] first and second serve, and then you're back to serving very quickly. Obviously not easy, but I did everything I could."
Did You Know?
Berrettini has proven a tough foe on grass. The Italian is now 17-5 on the surface and he also triumphed on the lawns of Stuttgart two years ago.

Fellow Italian Fognini plays Djere later today
Seventh-seeded Italian Matteo Berrettini began his campaign at The Championships on Wednesday with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 victory over Guido Pella of Argentina in two hours and 16 minutes.
It wasn’t always easy for Berrettini, who two weeks ago became the first cinch Championships debutant to lift the trophy at The Queen’s Club since Boris Becker in 1985.
The 25-year-old struck 47 winners, including 20 aces, and won 45 of 54 first-service points against Pella on No. 3 Court to set up a second-round clash against Dutch lucky loser Botic Van De Zandschulp.

Berrettini clinched the first break of the match with a backhand pass in the fifth game, then secured the 37-minute opener with his seventh ace. But Pella responded by mixing up his service placement and gained a 3-2 lead in the second set with a volley winner at close quarters.
Once Berrettini struck a backhand past Pella at the net to take the third set, the Italian ran through the 24-minute fourth set for the loss of 10 points.
Berrettini, who also captured the Serbia Open title in Belgrade (d. Karatsev) and reached his first ATP Masters 1000 final at the Mutua Madrid Open (l. to Zverev), is now 27-6 on the 2021 season. He is currently in seventh position in the FedEx ATP Race To Turin for a place at the Nitto ATP Finals, to be held from 14-21 November.
Van De Zandschulp hit 52 winners for his second Grand Slam match win. The 25-year-old beat French qualifier Gregoire Barrere 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-1, 7-6(3) in two hours and 40 minutes.
Berrettini's compatriot, 26th seed Fabio Fognini, will take on Laslo Djere of Serbia later on Wednesday for a place in the third round. Djere beat Fognini 6-3, 6-7(2), 6-1 in the Gonet Geneva Open second round.

Tomljanovic On Berrettini: His Game Is Great, His Mental Side Is Even Better
Spoiler:
The Italian is into the second round at Wimbledon
Matteo Berrettini and his girlfriend, WTA standout Ajla Tomljanovic, both advanced to the second round at Wimbledon on Wednesday. After her victory, Tomljanovic said that from watching the Italian up close, she believes there is far more to his game than a booming serve and hammer-like forehand.
“I actually think what’s most impressive about him is his mental side. Obviously his serve, his forehand, his game is great. But I think the way he approaches the game mentally, how he deals with adversity on court during matches [is most impressive],” Tomljanovic said. “Obviously I’m more on the inside so I know that it’s not always coming naturally to him to be that positive. He works for a lot of things that come his way and I think that’s really impressive, because I can relate to feeling similarly on the court.
“Sometimes it gets the better of me and obviously him too, but for the most part he tries really hard to get through it and use it to his advantage. I think it’s impressive and I think he’s working on it daily, so I try to draw on that sometimes.”

The WTA’s World No. 75 pointed to Berrettini’s maturity and how quickly he has grown as a player. Just three years ago, the Italian competed at Wimbledon for the first time. In October 2019, he cracked the Top 10 of the FedEx ATP Rankings and he has not left the elite group since.
“I remember two years ago here [at Wimbledon when he made the fourth round], it’s a huge difference. Okay, two years is a long time, but still some players don’t do it so rapidly,” Tomljanovic said. “He’s had that success not out of nowhere, but he became Top 10 in a very short period of time and sometimes the mind doesn’t follow as quickly as your game, but he has. I think it’s great.”
Tomljanovic does not believe that there is a secret to how Berrettini has handled the mental side of the game so well. But she thinks his willingness to learn is at the fore.
“I think he just learns from every defeat, every tough moment he has in his career. You can see that the next time he’s grown from it and he learns and he really uses that time to recognise, ‘Okay, what was wrong? What do I need to do better?’” Tomljanovic said. “That just proves that with his ranking and his game, he’s just improving and the best part is that he’s eager to learn.”
Berrettini will play Botic Van de Zandschulp on Wednesday for a spot in the third round, and Tomljanovic will face Alize Cornet.

The Italian next faces Bedene
Seventh seed Matteo Berrettini continued his strong grass-court season with a hard-fought 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(4) victory over Botic Van de Zandschulp on Thursday at Wimbledon.
The Italian, who lifted the cinch Championships trophy on his debut at the Queen’s Club earlier this month, fired 20 aces to advance in two hours and 17 minutes. He is now 7-0 on grass this year.
Berrettini reached the fourth round at Wimbledon in 2019 (l. to Federer) and reached his first ATP Masters 1000 final at the Mutua Madrid Open (l. to Zverev) in May. The 25-year-old will next face Aljaz Bedene, after the Slovenian eased past Yoshihito Nishioka 6-1, 6-0, 6-2 in 84 minutes.

As was the case in Berrettini’s tough four-set first-round win against Guido Pella, he had to show fight against qualifier Van de Zandschulp, No. 139 in the FedEx ATP Rankings. In the first set, the Italian saved two break points in his third and fourth service games as Van de Zandschulp caused the Italian problems with his aggressive baseline hitting. However, the World No. 9 then delivered a sucker-punch to break to move 5-3 ahead before closing out on serve.
Berrettini used his backhand slice to good effect and was impressive on his first serve throughout, winning 83 per cent (45/54) of points on his delivery. He improved in the second set, dictating more of the points as he sealed it with a smash.
The Italian was once again pushed in the third set, saving two set points at 5-6 with an ace and a smash to force a tie-break. He quickly moved 4/2 ahead and claimed victory with a forehand volley.

Also on Thursday, 17th seed Cristian Garin reached the third round at the All England Club for the first time in his career as he overcame Australian Marc Polmans 7-6(3), 6-2, 2-6, 7-6(5).
The Chilean fought back from 2-5 in the first set and claimed victory on his third match point, after squandering two while serving at 5-4 in the fourth set, to advance in three hours and 23 minutes.
Garin won the Chile Dove Men+Care Open (d. Bagnis) on home soil in March and is now 15-9 on the season. He will next face 13th seed Gael Monfils or Spaniard Pedro Martinez.

Berrettini, Sonego Make Italian History With Wimbledon Last 16 Spots
Spoiler:
Sonego overcomes Duckworth for place in second week
Matteo Berrettini recorded his 100th tour-level match win on Saturday to reach the fourth round at The Championships, Wimbledon, for a second time (also 2019).
The seventh-seeded Italian extended his winning streak on grass courts this year to eight matches with an impressive service performance in a 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Aljaz Bedene of Slovenia in one hour and 41 minutes. The match, held on No. 2 Court, was suspended due to rain for one hour and 31 minutes with Bedene serving at 3-3, Deuce, in the first set.
Berrettini, who is in strong contention for a spot at the Nitto ATP Finals, to be held from 13-21 November in Turin, arrived at the All England Club on the back of capturing his fifth ATP Tour title at the cinch Championships (d. Norrie). He also clinched the Serbia Open crown in Belgrade (d. Karatsev) in April and finished runner-up at the Mutua Madrid Open (l. to Zverev) in May.
He will now challenge Belarus' Ilya Ivashka, who beat Jordan Thompson of Australia 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in just over two hours. Berrettini will be hoping to better his best Wimbledon performance, a fourth-round exit in 2019 to Roger Federer.

After an initial six-game burst, which was suspended due to rain at 11:29am local time, the pair’s fourth ATP Head2Head meeting got back underway at 1:10pm. The first set then turned in Berrettini’s favour when the Italian caught Bedene off guard with a low return to break serve. Berrettini sealed the first set having won 20 of 23 service points.
Berrettini faced two break points in the second game of the second set, then applied the pressure on Bedene for a breakthrough. The World No. 9 completed the 36-minute passage of play with consecutive aces and won the first two games of the third set. Berrettini, who had beaten Bedene 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 7-6(3) in the 2019 Wimbledon first round, completed the match with his 20th ace.
Elsewhere, Berrettini’s compatriot, Lorenzo Sonego, the 23rd seed and last week’s Viking International Eastbourne finalist, beat James Duckworth 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 in one hour and 47 minutes on Court 17. There match was also interrupted by the weather with Sonego leading 4-2 in the first set after 20 minutes of play.
With victories for both Berrettini and Sonego, it marks just the third time in Wimbledon history that two Italian men have advanced to the Last 16 — 1949 (Giovanni Cucelli and Rolando del Bello) and 1955 (Nicola Pietrangeli and Giuseppe Merlo).
