Defending champion to next face Duckworth
Jannik Sinner began his title defence of the Sofia Open on Thursday by defeating qualifier Egor Gerasimov 6-2, 7-6(3) to advance to the quarter-finals.
Sinner, currently 11th in the FedEx ATP Race to Turin, is chasing points this week in a bid to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals, which will be held on home soil. The Italian now boasts a 34-17 record in 2021, bouncing back from a four-match losing streak by winning 10 of his past 13 matches, which included a title in Washington.
"I think this year what I have done was good, with some ups and downs," said Sinner. "Every week when I play it's trying to understand something new, trying to learn something new."
Watch Thursday Sofia Highlights:
Sinner won on his third match point, after Gerasimov saved two in the previous game. He improves his ATPHead2Head lead over the 28-year-old Belarusian to 2-0, having won their previous encounter earlier this year in Barcelona.
The 20-year-old was clinical on serve, winning 81 per cent of first-serve points and saving seven of the eight break points he faced. Gerasimov gained his lone break to lead 5-4 and serve for the second set, but Sinner broke straight back and took the set in a tie-break.
The Italian won his maiden ATP Tour title at the Sofia Open in 2020, where he beat Vasek Pospisil in a three-set thriller to lift the trophy.
Up next for Sinner in his effort to retain the title is the in-form Australian James Duckworth, who defeated Benoit Paire earlier Thursday 6-4, 6-4. The ATPHead2Head between the two stands at 1-1, with Duckworth defeating Sinner in straight sets in their most-recent meeting in Toronto.
"I'm trying to play my best tennis," Sinner said. "Obviously it's not going to be easy, but I'm very happy to be back here."

Italian to next face Krajinovic or Majchrzak
Defending champion Jannik Sinner battled past in-form James Duckworth on Friday at the Sofia Open, winning 7-6(4), 6-4 to reach the semi-finals.
Climbing today to 10th in the FedEx ATP Race To Turin, Sinner continues his campaign to reach the Nitto ATP Finals, to be held on home soil 14-21 November. The top seed in Sofia recovered from both a 2-5 deficit in the first set and 2-4 down in the second to advance in straight sets.
“It’s not easy coming back every time, you would prefer to stay up. Especially in a match like this,” Sinner said. “I just tried to stay focused, try to make him think a little bit. In the first set it worked, when he was serving for the set he made a couple of unforced errors.
“I just tried to stay solid and in the second set when I was 2-4 down I tried to hit a little bit faster and strong, especially in the last game.”
Sinner improves his ATP Head2Head against the Australian to 2-1, avenging a 6-3, 6-4 defeat against Duckworth earlier this year in Toronto.
“It feels very good to be honest,” Sinner said. “Today was a very tough match. I lost the last one against him in Toronto and he was in a very positive situation, winning a Challenger, making the final last week. It was not easy for me and it was a very close match, especially the first set."
Duckworth, a finalist in Nur-Sultan last week, had won 11 of his past 12 matches at all levels prior to the match. The 29-year-old Australian currently stands at a career-high No. 56 in the FedEx ATP Rankings.
“Playing here once again in Sofia is very special for me,” Sinner said. “I am very proud of myself, knowing that tomorrow is a very tough challenge in front of me. So I will try to be ready for tomorrow.”
Sinner is a three-time ATP Tour champion, adding two more titles to his collection earlier this year in Melbourne and Washington.
Chasing his fifth appearance in a tour-level final, Sinner will next play World No. 37 and fifth seed Filip Krajinovic, who defeated Polish lucky loser Kamil Majchrzak 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Krajinovic has reached six quarter-finals in 2021, but this is just the second time that he has pushed on to the semi-finals.
"Jannik is an unbelievable player. I have nothing to lose," Krajinovic said. "I will come here tomorrow and play free."

Italian will face second seed Monfils in the final
#NextGenATP Italian Jannik Sinner continued his bid to reach the Nitto ATP Finals on Saturday as he downed fifth seed Filip Krajinovic 6-3, 7-5 at the Sofia Open to reach his fourth tour-level final of the season.
Sinner, who is the defending champion in Bulgaria, was strong on serve, winning 86 per cent (24/28) of points behind his first delivery to advance after one hour and 43 minutes in their first ATP Head2Head meeting.
”It was a very tough match against him,” Sinner said. "We practise at times together, so we know each other’s games a little bit. There was a chance to go to a tie-break, which I luckily avoided. I am happy to be in the final here again.”

The top seed has enjoyed a strong season, winning tour-level titles in Melbourne and Washington, while also advancing to his first ATP Masters 1000 final in Miami. Sinner is currently 10th in the FedEx ATP Race To Turin as he aims to qualify for the season finale, to be held at the Pala Alpitour in Turin from 14-21 November.
”I just tried to stay positive with my mindset,” Sinner said. “I played a good first set and when he broke me I tried to stay there. The second set I was trying to stay positive as I felt the ball better than the other days and I think the level today was higher. It gives me a little bit of confidence ahead of the final.”
The 20-year-old has yet to drop a set this week and will face second seed Gael Monfils in the championship match after the Frenchman cruised past American Marcos Giron 7-5, 6-0. Sinner leads Monfils 2-1 in their ATP Head2Head Series, recently beating the World No. 20 in five sets at the US Open.
”We [Monfils and I] always have tough matches,” Sinner added. “It is the fourth time we will play. We had a tough one at the US Open in the fifth. He is a great player, everyone knows that. He is moving really well, which helps a lot. It is not going to be easy, but I can be happy to be in the final and I will enjoy it.”
In an entertaining match, both players played aggressively as they looked to control the tempo. After breaks were exchanged during the first set, Sinner moved ahead when Krajinovic hit a backhand into the net. The Serbian regained momentum in the second set, but could not convert from 5-2 ahead as Sinner won five games in a row to advance.
Krajinovic was aiming to capture his first tour-level title this week, having enjoyed a run to the championship match in Hamburg in July.

#NextGenATP Italian Jannik Sinner’s love affair with the Sofia Open continued on Sunday as he overcame second seed Gael Monfils 6-3, 6-4 to defend his title in Bulgaria and boost his chances of qualifying for the Nitto ATP Finals.
The top seed hit with consistent depth and power against Monfils as he pinned the Frenchman behind the baseline to triumph after 79 minutes and improve to 3-1 in their ATP Head2Head Series.
“The level was high today,” Sinner said in his on-court interview. “We had long, long rallies and it was physical as well. I am happy to be the winner here in Sofia again. I think it is a very nice tournament. It was the best match because I had to.”
With his victory, Sinner will rise to 10th in the FedEx ATP Race To Turin on Monday as he bids to qualify for the season finale on home soil. The Nitto ATP Finals will be held at the Pala Alpitour in Turin from 14-21 November.

The 20-year-old, who lifted his maiden tour-level trophy in Sofia last November, now holds a 9-0 record at the ATP 250 event and is the first player to become a two-time champion at the tournament.
“It is never easy playing against Gael, we’ve had many tough matches,” Sinner added. “I think in the crucial moments I was a bit luckier than him, which helped me a lot.”
It is the third tour-level title the Italian has won this year. Sinner lifted the trophy at the Great Ocean Road Open, before he captured the crown at the Citi Open to become the youngest player to win an ATP 500 event since the category was created in 2009.
Sinner made a fast start against Monfils as he found his range from the baseline, breaking the Frenchman’s serve to race 3-0 ahead. Despite Sinner making only 47 per cent of his first serves in the opening set, the Italian was ruthless when he found his first delivery, winning 93 per cent (13/14) of points behind it as he moved ahead.
The 20-year-old continued to dictate in the second set, causing Monfils problems with his flat backhand and heavy forehand. Sinner, who did not drop a set en route to the title, sealed his victory when Monfils fired a forehand long.
Monfils was competing in his first tour-level championship match since he triumphed in Rotterdam in February 2020. The World No. 20 has reached an ATP Tour final for 17 straight seasons.
