World No. 89 Mikhail Kukushkin claimed his 11th tour-level match of the season as he upset recent Shenzhen Open runner-up Tommy Robredo 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(4). The Kazakh won 71 per cent of his service points and converted three of his six break points for victory in two hours and eight minutes.

President’s Cup (Astana, Kazakhstan): Top seed Mikhail Kukushkin won the $75,000 event in Astana, defeating Evgeny Donskoy 6-2, 6-2 in a battle of No. 1 vs. No. 3 seeds. Competing on home soil, Kukushkin captured his 11th ATP Challenger Tour title in 16 finals. It was their fifth FedEx ATP Head2Head meeting and first since 2014 China Open qualifying in Beijing, with Kukushkin improving to 4-1 against Donskoy. The 27 year old rises to World No. 52 in the Emirates ATP Rankings, four spots off his career-high of No. 48, achieved one year ago.

The 28-year-old saved his best tennis for the championship match
After a decade on tour, Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan has won the biggest ATP Challenger Tour title of his career.
Competing this week at the $125,000+H event in Prostejov, Czech Republic, the 28-year-old was in top form. In the championship, he earned his 12th ATP Challenger Tour title by defeating qualifier Marton Fuscovics of Hungary in 59 minutes, 6-1, 6-2. The win was the fourth ATP Challenger Tour final this year to finish in under an hour.
Former world No. 1 and eight-time Grand Slam champion Ivan Lendl, the tournament ambassador this year in Prostejov, was on hand to give Kukushkin his winner’s trophy.
“I didn’t expect that I was going to win coming here, but was getting more confidence with each match. My quarter-final (against two-time defending champion and local favourite Jiri Vesely) was probably the most important win for me this week,” said Kukushkin. “To win the biggest Challenger is very important. This tournament is famous on tour and has a lot of strong players.”
Kukushkin is now on a 10-match win streak on the ATP Challenger Tour, having won the most recent Challenger he entered last July at his home in Astana. He’s entered Challengers sparingly in recent years, but enjoyed great success when he has, compiling an 18-4 record since 2014.
The Kazakhstani admits to struggling with injuries just as he’s found his stride. Shortly after entering the Top 50 of the Emirates ATP Rankings in 2012, injury forced him to sit out the fall season. He rebounded strongly in the second half of 2012, winning three ATP Challenger Tour titles and finishing as runner-up in two other events. After an extended absence, Kukushkin re-entered the Top 50 last fall, earning a career-high ranking of No. 46 in October.
“Because I’ve had periods of my career where I was dealing with injuries, the main thing for me is to stay healthy,” he said. “I also want to improve my ranking as much as possible. I’ve already been in the Top 50 and would like to try and go even higher than that.“
After winning in Prostejov, Kukushkin said it’s a safe assumption he’ll return next year to defend his title.
“The tournament is very good. It’s a quiet place since we’re staying on site at the club and there are a lot of courts to hit on,” he said. “I’ve already played here a couple of times and enjoyed it, but I like it here even more now that I’ve won!”

The 28-year-old also won last week at the $125,000 event in Prostejov, Czech Republic. He was in peak form at the latter stages of the tournament, dropping just 10 games in his final three matches. Irving Tennis Classic (Irving, Texas, U.S.A.): One year after finishing runner-up in Irving, Mikhail Kukushkin went one step further at the prestigious $150,000 event. The Kazakh defeated Matteo Berrettini 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 in Sunday's final, capping a dominant week that saw the World No. 83 defeat Americans Jared Donaldson, Bjorn Fratangelo and Steve Johnson en route to the title match.

The title is Kukushkin's 14th on the ATP Challenger Tour, but his first in North America. The 30-year-old was defeated by Aljaz Bedene in last year's Irving final.

"I'm really excited," said Kukushkin. "This is my second year in a row in the final and this time I won. I definitely like this place. I love being here in Dallas at the Four Seasons. I love playing here, with the amazing facilities and I'm very happy with the way I played and the fact that I won."

Kukushkin Upsets Edmund; Shapovalov Also Falls In Eastbourne

Second seed Kyle Edmund and Denis Shapovalov both fell on Thursday in the Nature Valley International semi-finals.

Mikhail Kukushkin, currently No. 90 in the ATP Rankings, accounted for Edmund 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 in two hours and 14 minutes, much to the disappointment of the British crowd at Devonshire Park in Eastbourne.

Edmund saved one set point at 5-4, Ad-Out in the first set on a run of four straight games. Kukushkin bounced back with breaks of serve in the third and ninth games in the second set of the pair’s first FedEx ATP Head2Head meeting. The Kazakhstani then carried the momentum into the decider by winning the first three games.

Kukushkin, 30, is through to his first ATP World Tour semi-final since February 2017 at the Memphis Open (l. to Basilashvili). He will next face Mischa Zverev of Germany on the south coast of England.

Earlier in the day, Zverev came back from a 1-3 deficit in the second set to beat Shapovalov, the 19-year-old #NextGenATP Canadian, 6-3, 6-3 in 81 minutes. Zverev, 30, advances to his first semi-final since October 2017 at the Moselle Open in Metz (l. to Gojowczyk).

After three straight service breaks, Zverev’s greater length of shot unsettled Shapovalov, who was broken to love at the end of the 31-minute opener. Shapovalov regrouped and held three break points for a 4-1 advantage, but Zverev won five straight games, largely capitalising on Shapovalov’s second serve. The match ended with a backhand error from Shapovalov.

Also in that section of the draw, John Millman set a third-round date with Mikhail Kukushkin. The Aussie is rekindling the magic from his run to the third round a year ago, upsetting 14th seed Fabio Fognini 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. It was just the fifth Top 20 win for Millman, who also stunned countryman Kyrgios at Flushing Meadows last year.

The 29-year-old is playing some of the best tennis of his career, in his return from an injury-plagued stretch, which saw him most recently undergo groin surgery in early 2017. He cracked the Top 50 of the ATP Rankings a month ago and will look to surpass that career-high No. 49 with victory over Kukushkin.

The Kazakh ousted Hyeon Chung 7-6(5), 6-2, 6-3 to open Thursday's play, advancing to the third round for the third time in four years. He needed two hours and 46 minutes to move on, converting nine of 15 break chances. Competing in his first hard-court tournament since March, Kukushkin had not won a match on the surface since lifting the ATP Challenger Tour trophy in Irving, Texas, that month.
