American Reilly Opelka walked on court Tuesday trailing No. 12 seed Borna Coric 3-4 in the final set of their first-round match. But the wild card quickly turned the tides and eliminated the Croat 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 after two hours and 18 minutes over the course of two days.
Opelka, who claimed his maiden ATP Tour title at the New York Open in February, will next play #NextGenATP Aussie Alex de Minaur, whom he lost to in the semi-finals of July’s BB&T Atlanta Open.

The final image of Reilly Opelka's first match win at the US Open was an exuberant fist pump and smack of the chest. After battling for two hours and 51 minutes, the American finally fought past a dogged Fabio Fognini on a warm Day 1 in New York.

Opelka outlasted the 11th seed 6-3, 6-4, 6-7(6), 6-3 to emerge victorious for the first time at Flushing Meadows. He fired 26 winners and converted five of 15 break chances to progress to the second round on a packed Court 17.

The Florida native was made to work, having relinquished the lead twice in the third set - up 4-3 and serving for the match at 6-5. Fognini would save a match point in the ensuing tie-break but it was Opelka who hit top gear in a hurry in the fourth set.

"It's tough. You expect that from a guy who was Top 10 in the world," Opelka told Brad Gilbert after the match. "He made me dig deep and find a way in the fourth set. This is my favourite court to be on and everyone stayed the whole time. They kept the energy up and helped me through. I didn't serve my best today, but it shows I have more than that in my game. I did well from the baseline."

The New York Open champion closed out the win on his second match point. It marks Opelka's third Top 20 win at a Grand Slam this year, following his victories over John Isner at the Australian Open and Stan Wawrinka at Wimbledon.

Japan’s Yasutaka Uchiyama walked onto the Colosseum at Ariake Tennis Park Friday with hopes of reaching his first ATP Tour semi-final, thrilling the Tokyo fans in the process. But big-serving American Reilly Opelka brought those dreams to a halt.

Opelka defeated the qualifier 6-3, 6-3 in one hour and 18 minutes to reach the last four of the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships, his first trip to the semi-finals of an ATP 500 event. This is his main draw debut in Tokyo.

"I'm stoked. I'm happy. Today was tough, I felt some pressure. I was the favourite in that match. He was playing inspired tennis in his hometown with the home crowd," Opelka said. "I thought I did a great job of dealing with all those different factors and variables. I played really well. The way I played that match is how I see myself playing, how I hope I play in the future. I had a lot of clarity on the court."

It’s getting almost as hard to overlook Opelka in a Grand Slam draw as it would be in a crowded room. The 21-year-old, who measures a whopping 213cm, came out on top in the tallest Grand Slam match since records began, downing 208cm No.9 seed John Isner in four tiebreak sets in the first round, before losing a fifth-set tiebreak against Thomas Fabbiano in the last 64.

In many ways Opelka resembles an ‘Isner 2.0’, armed with the devastating serve and showing improving nous in the rallies. Pull it all together, and he’ll take some stopping – as he did two years ago, when he pushed David Goffin to five sets in the first round. Having cracked the top 100 on the eve of the Australian Open, the world No.97’s tournament prospects are looking up heading to the US hard court swing, where he will once again be a name the top seeds will want to avoid early on.
