There were moments when Pablo Andujar could not envision a return to professional tennis, let alone wrapping his arms around a trophy. After three elbow surgeries and years of anguish, the former World No. 32 had his doubts that he would ever step on a court again.

But when the body fails, perseverence prevails. In just his eighth tournament in 18 months, Andujar battled to the title at the inaugural ATP Challenger Tour event in Alicante, Spain. He celebrated his first trophy in nearly four years, since triumphing at the Swiss Open Gstaad in 2014.

After battling to a trio of three-set victories during the week, Andujar needed just one hour and 36 minutes to upset #NextGenATP star Alex de Minaur 7-6(5), 6-1 in Saturday's final. The Spaniard rallied from an 0-3 deficit in the first set, reeling off 13 of the next 17 games to emerge victorious.

De Minaur, meanwhile, continues his push towards the Top 100 after reaching his third Challenger final. It marked the third consecutive year that the 19-year-old has featured in a title match on the circuit. Having also reached his first ATP World Tour final in Sydney in January, the Aussie-born Alicante resident is the only player to reach finals on both circuits this year.


Andujar's win at the Ferrero Challenger Open, hosted at former World No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero's academy in the town of Villena, will see him jump more than 200 spots in the ATP Rankings to No. 355. The Spanish veteran spoke to ATPWorldTour.com after the match...

After De Minaur got off to a great start at 3-0 in the first set, you were able to recover nicely. Talk about that and how you got the win.
I think it was a great final. We both played very well throughout the first set. He started very strong without missing much. I tried to match that level he was playing and I was able to get the break back. It was an exchange of blows until the tie-break. I was lucky to take it and the momentum went in my favour. In the second set, I tried to maintain the same level and although he played well, his game dropped a little.

Your opponent in the final is one of the #NextGenATP leaders in the ATP Race To Milan. What makes him so tough to beat?
I was not surprised at his level, because I had seen him play a few times. I know he can play very well and he's only 19 years old. I'm surprised that he has so many weapons already, and not only with his game, but also mentally. He is a gladiator, a warrior on the court. I agree that he is a player on the rise.

What feelings did you have throughout the week?
It was all very good. I am slowly improving my game and that allowed me to play the best match of the week in the final. I did not expect to take a trophy with me already.

You didn't expect success to come so soon?
That's right. In the end, it is true that if you buy the tickets and do everything you can to win the lottery, there could be a week when you win. If feel like that was me. In this case, it makes me especially excited because it was close to home. Juan Carlos Ferrero's Equelite Academy has been very good to me from the first day. We have known each other for a long time, we have a very good relationship and that makes this title even more special. This helped me to keep my level all week and stay calm.

What do you take from the week in Alicante?
I take great satisfaction. In the end, when you put in the time and effort, everything ends up working out. All the suffering has been rewarded. The previous week I lost in the first round of the Challenger in Marbella, and in just one week everything changed.

What changed in such a short time?
I was training well and doing things the best I could. After all this time away from the game, it was a surprise to win. Look at the weeks I've played. I do not have many titles. It's normal to lose every week. But this time it has been on my side.

This season, you had won your first match at the Rio Open presented by Claro, but again you had another injury.
It was a small setback. Although it was not an elbow injury, I had to go back to do rehab and it was a month and a half without competing. I knew that little by little I would get my level again, although maybe it has come faster than I expected. Now I only ask to stay healthy.

Where do you go from here?
Marrakesh. I will try to play ATP World Tour tournaments with my Protected Ranking and any wild cards. That will allow me to continue training and competing with the best players. That is what I need now.

ATP World Tour stars hoping to reach the Grand Prix Hassan II final started their double shift on Saturday in Marrekech after rain washed out Friday’s play.
Two-time champion Pablo Andujar needed three sets to advance to the semi-finals, ending the surprise run of Russian qualifier Alexey Vatutin 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 on Saturday.
The champion in 2011 (d. Starace) and 2012 (d. Ramos-Vinolas), reached his first ATP World Tour semi-final since Barcelona in 2015 (l. to Nishikori) after two hours and 47 minutes to improve his tournament record to 13-2. Vatutin was bidding to reach his first tour-level semi-final after securing his first two wins on tour to reach the quarter-finals.
Andujar will face Portugal’s Joao Sousa later in the day, after the 29-year-old overcame Nikoloz Gabashvili 6-2, 4-6, 6-1. Sousa defeated Top 10 stars Alexander Zverev and David Goffin last month in Indian Wells and Miami respectively.

France’s Richard Gasquet booked his place in the final four, needing exactly two hours to extend his perfect FedEx ATP Head2Head record to 8-0 against countryman Gilles Simon 6-2, 7-6(4). The fourth seed edged a second-set tie-break to beat the 2008 champion, in a match featuring 12 breaks of serve, and book a semi-final meeting with Kyle Edmund. Gasquet is aiming to reach his second championship match of the season (Montpellier).
Edmund won his 10th match of the 2018 ATP World Tour season by overcoming, Malek Jaziri, the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships semi-finalist, 6-2, 6-1 in 51 minutes on Court Central.
The 23-year-old, dropped only three points behind his first serve and converted all four of his break point chances en route to the semi-finals, and now stands just one win away from his first ATP World Tour final. Edmund and Gasquet are tied at 1-1 in their FedExATP Head2Head series.

Pablo Andujar is one of just two men to win multiple titles at the Grand Prix Hassan II. Andujar won back-to-back titles in 2011 and 2012, with Guillermo Perez-Roldan the only other two-time winner (1992- ’93).

Kyle Edmund w turnieju ATP w Marrakeszu prezentował znakomitą formę. W drodze do finału stracił tylko 16 gemów i w niedzielę stanął przed szansą na wywalczenie pierwszego tytułu w głównym cyklu. W meczu o trofeum zmierzył się z Pablo Andujarem, 32-letnim Hiszpanem, powoli odbudowującym swoją dyspozycję po trzech operacjach łokciach.
Edmund, jak w poprzednich pojedynkach, starał się grać ofensywnie i agresywnie. Ale nie dość, że to nie był jego dzień, to jeszcze mógł odnieść wrażenie, że rywalizuje ze ścianą nie przebicia. Andujar bowiem grał znakomicie. Świetnie spisywał się w obronie, nie popełniał wielu niewymuszonych błędów i skutecznie przechodził z obrony do ataku.

Andujar rozpoczął mecz od dwóch przełamań i wyjścia na prowadzenie 3:0. Po chwili zanotował kolejnego breaka i wygrał inauguracyjnego seta 6:2. Druga partia miała identyczny przebieg. Hiszpan znów błyskawicznie odebrał podanie rywalowi, następnie podwyższył przewagę i ponownie zwyciężył 6:2.

Dla Andujara, który po ostatniej piłce padł na kort, był to cudowny moment. Zdobył tytuł dokładnie rok po tym, jak przeszedł trzecią operację łokcia, a jego dalsza kariera stanęła pod znakiem zapytania.

Hiszpan po raz trzeci zwyciężył w Grand Prix Hassan II. Poprzednio triumfował w sezonach 2011-12, gdy ten turniej odbywał się w Casablance. Ma także na koncie mistrzostwo imprezy w Gstaad z sezonu 2014.

Za triumf w Marrakeszu Andujar otrzymał 250 punktów do rankingu ATP oraz 85 tys. euro premii finansowej. Z kolei Edmund wzbogacił się o 150 "oczek" i 44,7 tys. euro.

Amazing Andujar: No. 1,824 To Titlist In Two Months

Pablo Andujar became the lowest-ranked ATP World Tour champion in 20 years on Sunday, beating first-time finalist Kyle Edmund 6-2, 6-2 to win the Grand Prix Hassan II for a record third time.
The Spaniard, who also won the event in 2011 and 2012 in Casablanca, overcame the Australian Open semi-finalist in 82 minutes to become the most successful player in the history of the tournament, which began in 1990.
"I played very well during the whole match," said Andujar. "Trying to make him move as much as I could. He attacks a lot and is a very strong player. I was very solid today and I'm very happy about that."

The World No. 355 is the lowest-ranked tour-level titlist since Lleyton Hewitt, who lifted his maiden title in Adelaide at World No. 550 in 1998. Andujar has now won three of his four ATP World Tour titles in Morocco with his other victory coming in Gstaad four years ago.

The 32-year-old raced out to a 5-1 lead, breaking Edmund in each of his opening three service games to establish control of the match, before taking a one-set advantage in the eighth game after saving two break points. Edmund had been broken just three times this week heading into the championship match.
The Spaniard continued to find success against the 23-year-old’s serve in the second set, winning 67 per cent of points while returning off the Edmund first serve. Andujar was once again clinical, breaking on all three break-point opportunities created before once again navigating his way through a tough eighth service game to clinch the title in Marrakech.
Ranked as low as World No. 1,824 on 12 February after three elbow surgeries had threatened his career, Andujar now finds himself on a ten-match winning streak after becoming the first man since Ryan Harrison in 2017 to win ATP Challenger Tour and ATP World Tour titles in consecutive weeks.
"I always believed that I could come back, otherwise I wouldn't have tried," reflected Andujar.

World No. 26 Edmund was bidding to win his first ATP World Tour title in his maiden championship match at tour-level. With victory, he would also have become just the seventh player from Great Britain, in the history of the ATP Rankings, to reach the Top 20.
"For me it was a good tournament... it was great experience for me," said Edmund. "It's been a good year so far, it's not the result I wanted, but nevertheless a good week for me."
Andujar will receive 250 ATP Ranking points and €85,000 in prize money for clinching the crown. Edmund earns 150 ATP Rankings points and €44,770.

Pablo Andujar has fast become a strong candidate for Comeback Player of the Year in the ATP World Tour Awards presented by Moët & Chandon. Eight months ago, the 32-year-old was sitting outside the Top 1800 as he began his comeback from multiple elbow surgeries.

But now, Andujar is back and looking stronger than ever. On Sunday, the former World No. 32 notched his second ATP Challenger Tour title of the year, beating Marco Trungelliti 7-5, 6-3 at the inaugural tournament in Florence, Italy. In fact, he earned two wins in one day to lift the trophy after rain washed out Saturday's semi-finals. He rises to the precipice of a Top 100 return, soaring to No. 103 in the ATP Rankings. Considering where the Spaniard was at the start of the year, it is truly remarkable what he is achieving.
