Alex Popyrin our next young gun

Australian tennis has another young gun on an upward trajectory after Sydney teenager Alexei Popyrin claimed his first main draw victory on the ATP Tour.

Popyrin overcame compatriot Matthew Ebden in the first round of the Swiss Indoors in Basel to book a potential showdown with Germany’s world No 5 Alexander Zverev, who plays Dutchman Robin Haase.

The 19-year-old racked up 12 aces to shade Ebden 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 to strengthen his claim for a wildcard berth for January’s Australian Open, a tournament he debuted at this year.

Popyrin, who won the French Open boys championship in 2017, advanced to the main draw by beating world No 58 Benoit Paire and promising American Mackenzie Macdonald in qualifying.

Currently ranked 174 in the world, Popyrin is now poised to break into the ATP’s top-150 players on the back of his exploits at one of Roger Federer’s favourite tournaments.

Wildcards for Aussies Popyrin and Kubler

Alexei Popyrin (NSW) and Jason Kubler (Qld) have been awarded the final two main draw wildcards into the Australian Open. Popyrin, 18, is one of Australia’s brightest tennis prospects, coming to the world’s attention after winning the junior title at Roland Garros in 2017.

The Sydneysider also won his first ITF tournament in Poland in July last year and today defeated the No.2 seed, Federico Delbonis, in qualifying for the Sydney International. “I’m so excited to have been awarded this wildcard, for my first ever Grand Slam main draw," Popyrin said. “Thanks to everyone at Tennis Australia for giving me the chance, I’m going to give it a real go. I’ve always dreamt of playing the Grand Slams and I can’t believe it is really happening, what an amazing opportunity for me.”

As for Kubler, 24, the talented player is back on track following a series of injuries that have sidelined his career. In October Kubler started in qualifying at the Traralgon Challenger and ended up going all the way, defeating an array of higher ranked players to win the tournament.

The Queenslander, whose career has been hampered by knee injuries, has also had impressive results this week at the Playford Challenger in South Australia. Today he defeated talented young American Reilly Opelka 7-6(3) 6-3 in the semifinal and meets Canadian Brayden Schnur in the final tomorrow. When I got the call saying I had got the wildcard, I was so happy,” Kubler said.

“It’s been a tough time with all the injuries I’ve had, so that makes this opportunity that much sweeter. I’m incredibly grateful to TA for the opportunity. I feel like I’m hitting the ball really well, so who knows what could happen when I get to Melbourne Park. I know I’ll be giving absolutely 100 per cent.”

"It’s great to see Jason get this opportunity after finishing the year so strongly, and fighting back after some injury setbacks,” said Wally Masur, Tennis Australia’s Director of Performance. Masur is also looking forward to watching the ongoing development of exciting young gun, Alexei Popyrin. “At 18 I think Alexei is one of the most exciting prospects in Australian tennis. He won the French Open junior tournament last year which was really impressive in our eyes. This wildcard will be a huge stepping stone as he goes from playing the top juniors in the world to playing week-in, week-out, on the professional tour.”

Popryin and Kubler join Thanasi Kokkinakios (SA), Alex De Minaur (NSW), Alex Bolt (SA), Tim Symczek (USA), Soonwoo Kwon (South Korea) and Corentin Moutet (FRA) as wildcard recipients for Australian Open 2018.

Martin Klizan confident promising Alexei Popyrin will become great player

Slovakian tennis star Martin Klizan dropped a praise on promising Australian star Alexei Popyrin following their Sydney International clash. Klizan, 29, edged out the 19-year-old wildcard in a first-round thriller 7-6 (4) 4-6 7-6 (5) to reach the Sydney round-of-16.

The Slovakian saved three consecutive break points in the 12th game of the first set to force a tie-break. Klizan, ranked at No. 41 in the world, overturned a 2-0 tie-break deficit as he eventually found a way to win the opener.

The 29-year-old appeared to be going for a straight-set win as he quickly opened up a 3-0 second-set lead. However, world No. 147 Popyrin refused to give up as he broke Klizan in the fifth and ninth game to clinch a decider.

As no break points were seen, the third set went into a decider -- where Klizan won the opening five points. Popyrin saved two consecutive match points but failed to save the third as Klizan sealed the win after two hours and 41 minutes of play.

Popyrin, who won the 2017 French Open boys' singles title, has been making solid progress at the ATP level in recent years. "Popyrin is a great player, and of course I'm sure that he's gonna be a very good player.
