Ricardas Berankis produced a big upset, defeating eighth seed Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 6-3 after 87 minutes. The 28-year-old qualifier, who lifted his 11th ATP Challenger Tour title last month in Rennes (d. Hoang), won 65 per cent of second-serve return points (20/31) and saved three of four break points to reach the second round.

"I was feeling good today. really happy with my game today," said Berankis. "I was able to [execute] the whole plan, what I was planning to do before the match... The plan was to stay as close as possible and not to get in his game, which is to get into those long rallies which he loves."

Challenger Banque Nationale de Drummondville (Drummondville, Canada): Top seed Ricardas Berankis is a force on the ATP Challenger Tour in 2019. The 28-year-old did not drop a set in clinching a pair of titles, following his convincing performance in Rennes, France, with an equally dominant showing in Drummondville.

Berankis capped his campaign in Canada with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Yannick Maden on Sunday, claiming his 11th Challenger title in impressive fashion. He joins Alexander Bublik as the only players with multiple titles thus far this year. Up 13 spots to No. 82 in the ATP Rankings, the Lithuanian is targeting a Top 50 return in the near future. He also recently registered a quarter-final result as a qualifier at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.

CH Vancouver: 13 triumf Litwina w ATP CH!

The hottest player on the ATP Challenger Tour added another piece of silverware to his trophy case. Ricardas Berankis claimed the title at the award-winning VanOpen, his tour-leading fourth trophy on the circuit this year.

This week, Vancouver celebrated back-to-back Tournament of the Year awards, receiving its trophy in front of a packed crowd on Tuesday evening at Hollyburn Country Club. And on Sunday, they crowned their 14th champion. Berankis defeated Jason Jung 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 to earn a hard-fought championship in the Canadian city.

On Wednesday, the Lithuanian trailed qualifier Michail Pervolarakis 4-1 in the third set and on Friday he was forced to rally from a set down once again, ousting Thanasi Kokkinakis. The top seed would eventually claim his 13th Challenger title, rising to No. 70 in the ATP Rankings.

"This match wasn't as controlled as some of my previous matches. In the semis and the second round, I felt like from the first point I was in control. Today in the first set, it was control, but in the second one it was so-so which I lost 5-7,” said Berankis. “I needed to leave everything that I had on the court to win the match. It was a really tough match. Jason played really well."

Berankis is on fire this year, boasting a 4-0 record in Challenger finals and a 24-3 (.889) mark overall - the second-best win percentage on tour. He also owns titles on the indoor hard courts of Rennes, France and Drummondville, Canada, as well as the outdoor hard courts of Busan, South Korea.

Berankis is not a fresh face like Sinner and Kwon. Far from it. The 29-year-old reached his first ATP Tour final in Los Angeles in 2012, but has since fallen on hard times as he continues to recover from hip surgery.

Now, the former World No. 50 is back inside the Top 100, at No. 70, after putting together a stunning first half of the season on the Challenger circuit. Not only does he own a tour-leading four titles - in Rennes, Drummondville, Busan and Vancouver - the Lithuanian boasts a staggering 24-3 record overall.

His success has translated to the tour-level as well, reaching the quarter-finals in Dubai with a dominant victory over Daniil Medvedev and earning a first Grand Slam match win in three years at Wimbledon (d. Shapovalov). He will look to carry the momentum to Flushing Meadows, opening against Jiri Vesely on Court 9 on Monday.

Second seed Ricardas Berankis recovered from a slow start, saving two set points at 4-5 in the first set, before beating Cedrik-Marcel Stebe 7-6(2), 6-1 in one hour and 42 minutes on Wednesday for a place in the Tata Open Maharashtra quarter-finals. He’ll next challenge fifth seed Yuichi Sugita, who advanced without hitting a ball when qualifier Viktor Troicki pulled out due to a fever.

Jiri Vesely battled hard to overcome seventh seed Salvatore Caruso 7-6(5), 6-4 in one hour and 51 minutes. He now plays Ilya Ivashka, who defeated third seed Stefano Travaglia 7-6(5), 7-6(3) in two hours.

In first-round action, Taro Daniel, the winner of an ATP Challenger Tour title in Burnie (d. Hanfmann) on Sunday, knocked out wild card Sasikumar Mukund 6-2, 7-6(7) in one hour and 40 minutes. He will next challenge sixth seed James Duckworth.
