Felix: 'I Feel Super Privileged & Lucky To Have Toni Nadal'
Spoiler:
Canadian discusses working with "Uncle Toni"
In an extract from Eurosport’s Players’ Voice series, Felix Auger-Aliassime discusses working with Toni Nadal, Rafael Nadal’s uncle. The #NextGenATP Canadian reveals how their relationship came together, how much respect he has for “Uncle Toni” and more.
I feel super privileged and lucky to have Toni in my team. Throughout my whole childhood I remember him by the side of his nephew, Rafa. He’s been around for a long time and has won everything the sport has to give as a coach so it’s extremely motivating to have him by my side. I think he’s a person I can learn a lot from, both as a person and as a coach.
Growing up, I remember seeing a lot of him on TV when I was watching Rafa’s matches and he just struck me as this very devoted and passionate coach. Of course he was his uncle, but ultimately he's a coach that was willing to go above and beyond for his player - he seemed to have this vision for Rafa’s career and gave him everything he needed.
The first time we both met was actually at Monte-Carlo two years ago. Each year there’s a players’ party and I was rehearsing for my part, which was a piano performance. He came into the room, saw me and stopped to say that he’d seen me play in Indian Wells and that he liked my attitude and my game.
His words kind of stayed with me and it got me thinking about how great it would be to have somebody like him on my team; somebody who had a different, fresh view to potentially see things that we may be missing.
So at the end of last year when I was back home in Canada, we approached him to see if it could be a possibility. He agreed to talk to us and suggested a trial at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Mallorca, so we headed out there for two weeks and everything just seemed to work really well. After that, I started my season and we kept in touch before announcing the partnership not long after.
From the feedback I’ve had, I think everyone thinks it’s only a good thing; my coach Frederic, the rest of the team, my family, and other coaches and players on the tour. Will it give me an advantage? We will see, but I think in the end, what happens on the court is most important and I still have to do the work - it’s not like having Toni automatically improves my performances or my ranking right away.
It’s very early days, but so far we’ve been talking a lot about where we see my career heading, which is essentially to reach the highest levels and win the biggest tournaments.

Felix Auger-Aliassime made it third time lucky at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia, but needed to work mightily hard for his first victory at the Foro Italico on Sunday.
The #NextGenATP Canadian battled to 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-4 victory over Filip Krajinovic of Serbia in two hours and 46 minutes. He is now 13-8 on the season, which includes a runner-up finish at the Murray River Open (l. to Evans) in February.
"I'm really happy," said Auger-Aliassime. "[It was] a tough match. I'm happy I was able to win today. You've got to believe and be resilient at times. I wanted to win badly, so I dug deep and I found a way."
Auger-Aliassime first served for the match when he led 5-4 in the second set, and endured a tense finish in the decider to set up a second-round clash against eighth seed and 2020 runner-up Diego Schwartzman of Argentina.
How To Watch
Auger-Aliassime was broken in the first game, but his forehand soon worked wonders to break Krajinovic’s serve at 1-2 and when he led 4-3. The 20-year-old completed the 42-minute opener with his sixth ace.
From 3-3 in the first set, Auger-Aliassime won five straight games to a 2-0 lead in the second set. The World No. 20 was broken to 30 when serving for the match at 5-4, but won the first two games of the decider, which included five breaks of serve. Krajinovic, who reached the Rome third round last year, converted nine of 15 break points in a late surge.

Felix Auger-Aliassime earned his third Top 10 win on Tuesday, powering past World No. 10 Diego Schwartzman 6-1, 6-3 to reach the third round of the Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome.
The first time these two met, last year in Cologne, Schwartzman clawed past the #NextGenATP star after two hours and 32 minutes in conditions seemingly more suitable for the Canadian. But at the Foro Italico, in heavy conditions, it was Auger-Aliassime who played better, claiming five of his six break points to triumph after 64 minutes.
"It was tricky conditions overall. A lot of rain, heavy conditions. I think maybe it suited me better. I think he was struggling to find openings on the court," Auger-Aliassime said. "I took advantage of that. I kept going for my shot with no hesitation, stuck to my game plan. I was able to do that well outside of the little bit of slump in the second."
Last September, Schwartzman enjoyed one of the best tournaments of his career in Rome, defeating Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals and Denis Shapovalov in the semi-finals to reach his first ATP Masters 1000 final. But on Tuesday, he hit just one winner to 25 unforced errors and was never able to dig into the match against the 20-year-old.
Auger-Aliassime protected his serve well in the rainy conditions, winning 67 per cent of his second-serve points. And the seven-time ATP Tour finalist put pressure on the Argentine's serve, pouncing early in rallies and stopping Schwartzman from finding a rhythm. The eighth seed only won 40 per cent of his service points.
How To Watch
This is Auger-Aliassime's first Top 10 victory since eliminating Stefanos Tsitsipas at the Queen's Club in 2019, and he is now 3-15 against the elite group. The World No. 21 will next play 12th seed David Goffin or Argentine qualifier Federico Delbonis.
"Of course, Diego is a tough opponent always. Again, sometimes matches against those ranked 20, 30, 40, are tougher," Auger-Aliassime said. "Most of the time players in the Top 10 are tough. For me it's just two men trying to win. That's really what it is."
