Lloyd Harris keeps racking up the achievements as the 2018 season rolls along. And the South African #NextGenATP is pressing towards yet another: the Top 100 in the ATP Rankings.

Harris dominated the field in Stockton, California, to claim his second ATP Challenger Tour title on Sunday, defeating fellow #NextGenATP Marc Polmans 6-2, 6-2 in the championship. Two months ago, he became the first South African to lift a trophy in five years. Now, the 21-year-old proved that he's not done with just one.

The Cape Town native dropped just one set all week, earning impressive wins over an in-form Christopher Eubanks, top seed Jordan Thompson and eighth seed Polmans. He joins as exclusive club in becoming the third #NextGenATP with multiple titles this year, in addition to Jaume Munar and Michael Mmoh.

And most importantly, Harris is up to a career-high No. 113 in the ATP Rankings and rises four spots to 10th in the ATP Race to Milan. Having resided in 20th place prior to his triumph in Lexington, he is now firmly in contention to qualify for the Next Gen ATP Finals.

Behind a ruthless run that has included a pair of Challenger titles, a successful US Open qualifying campaign and a first Top 50 win over Gael Monfils at the Chengdu Open, Harris has fast become one of the hottest players in pro tennis. He's showing no signs of slowing down as the season nears its conclusion.

Harris sat down with broadcaster Mike Cation following his victory on Sunday...

Lloyd, it was an impressive performance, especially considering how windy it was. We were looking at sustained winds of over 20 miles per hour. How did you stay focused in those conditions?
Thank you very much first of all. I came out and saw the wind and knew it was going to be a very tricky match for both of us. I think I like to dominate with my serve, but it was almost impossible to get any free points. I knew I was going to have to be smart with my game and from the start I was zoning in on him with every single point. I was focused and I played the big points well and got some breaks early. I looked to hold my serve and keep the momentum going. It was a good performance.

From the start, it looked like you were willing to take chances. Where does that confidence come from and how has it been building through this incredible year for you?
I was willing to take the risk, whether it was break point or 15/0. I knew I was going to take the initiative in most of the points and try to be as aggressive as possible with my forehands and backhands. I feel really confident out there and I've played a lot of matches this year. Getting a lot of wins in the last couple of months has really built my confidence up nicely. Last week I had the biggest win of my career (d. Monfils at Chengdu Open) and that really helps for sure. I'm just playing very good tennis at the moment.

For a lot of players, when they have that first monumental win on the ATP World Tour, find it hard come back down to a Challenger the next week. And especially in a different continent. How did you do that?
There was a bunch of things that happened in Chengdu. I got my biggest win and I lost 7-6 in the third the match after. Then, the 15-hour time difference. It was a tricky turnaround for sure. Luckily, I had 3-4 days to settle down and get used to the conditions. But I just came out there and did what I had to do in each match. I got better as the tournament progressed. I'm happy with the tennis I played for sure.

Now you're No. 113 in the ATP Rankings and you're in touching distance to the Top 100 for the first time in your career. How do you maintain this form without getting over confident?
The key for me is to keep improving my game and doing the hard work. I feel like if I keep doing that, the tennis will stay good. As long as I keep a positive mindset, I'll play better and have strong results in the future. I'm not expecting anything and giving it my all every day.

What are the points of improvement that you're working on, in the back end of the year? Are there specific things or are you just coasting now at a good level and want to continue with these results?
I'm constantly trying to work on things. It's a mixture of tweaking small things in my game, like moving forward and working on my volley game, and also the transition from playing defence to being more offensive. Just the small things and I felt that it's really paying off. After a great run in the U.S. summer, I went home and took 2.5 weeks to think about how I want to improve and what I want to do with my game. I've come back even stronger and am playing even better than I wanted to before.

One of the things I remember from last year was that you can go off mentally and lose focus. A part of that is youth. How have you matured in that part of your game?
It's a problem a lot of players have. That is, keeping the focus throughout an entire match and an entire tournament. At the Challenger level and at the ATP level, you can't have that. Any dips will cost you the match. So, I feel like I've really improved on that. I'm trying to compete in every single point. It doesn't matter if it's 0/40 or whatever the score may be. I'm trying to compete hard. In the last couple of months I've really done that well and made a mental shift.

Speaking of which, the one set you lost this week was against Christopher Eubanks in the quarter-finals and you looked pretty out of it. What happened there and how did you turn that around?
I couldn't even finish my warm-up that day. I woke up and was not feeling well. I was pretty nauseous. I actually thought he was going to take advantage more, but I got it to a tie-break. And when I lost the first set I had to recuperate and get my thought process positive again. I thought I did well in the second set and he gave me a game with a couple of double faults. Right then and there, I went up another gear and took control of the match. That's something that is important to do if you want to become a top player.

And you came out with a coffee right before the match.
Me not feeling well definitely had a lot to do with the coffee. It was one of the only days in the last two years where I had a coffee and still couldn't get going in the first set. Starbucks should definitely start sponsoring me one of these days for sure.

After Lexington, we were talking about the South African connection. Kevin Anderson and Raven Klaasen are sending messages to you. Robbie Koenig too. With this core group of South Africans who are playing professionally - and Robbie as well - what does it mean to have another guy like you?
I think it's massive for the country. One thing we've been lacking as a country has been depth. We've only had Anderson at the top and also Raven in the doubles. A country is not a great tennis country with only one guy succeeding. So now, we're getting closer and closer and hopefully I'll be in all the main draws of the Grand Slams as well. I want to be right there competing with the top guys. I think it's great for the country and to have a support group behind me. It's also awesome that I can inspire the younger kids and upcoming juniors that they can also achieve that. That's what we're looking for.

What have they said to you over the past couple of years, to help you reach this point where you are now?
It's just advice on the tour and how to manage your schedule. I didn't have much experience with that stuff and playing a lot of Futures. Just a Challenger here and there. Going through their situations and how they eventually reached the top, translated well for me and I found some inspiration from that.

How do you celebrate a win like this?
I'll have a small celebration, because you need to feel good about the win and that you've achieved something. Then it's all focus again and getting used to the conditions in Fairfield. I need to mentally shift to the next one.

Harris Makes Historic Top 100 Debut With Launceston Crown

One year ago, Lloyd Harris was hovering outside the Top 300 and fighting to climb the ATP Rankings on the former Futures circuit.

What a difference a year makes. On Sunday, Harris blasted to his third ATP Challenger Tour title, dominating the field in Launceston, Australia. The 21-year-old did not drop a set all week and would secure a 6-2, 6-2 win over Lorenzo Giustino in the final.

With the victory, Harris made his big breakthrough, surging into the Top 100 for the first time. It was a historic achievement, as the Cape Town native joined World No. 5 Kevin Anderson in the elite club, marking the first time multiple South Africans are in the Top 100 in 15 years.

"I am obviously super happy to break into the Top 100," said Harris. "I think this is a huge milestone for any professional tennis player. I am really excited to see what I can achieve in the near future."

Harris makes his debut on Monday at a career-high No. 100 in the ATP Rankings. The last time two players from South Africa featured in the Top 100 was 23 February 2004, when Wayne Ferreira was at No. 47 and Wesley Moodie at No. 88.

"This win definitely helps to get one step closer to where I want to be: a Top 100 player consistently. I want to break into the Top 50 next. That's my new goal. I'll be working hard for that this year."

Akin to Anderson, Harris boasts a big game predicated on an imposing serve and giant groundstrokes. Just six months ago, he cracked the Top 200 with his maiden title in Lexington, USA, and would inch further ahead with a second crown in Stockton in October.

The 21-year-old capped his 2018 season with a successful stint on the ATP Tour, earning his first tour-level match win over Gael Monfils at the Chengdu Open. He concluded his campaign with a trip to Milan for the Next Gen ATP Finals, appearing as the first alternate.

Harris returns to the ATP Tour in February, competing in qualifying at both the New York Open and Delray Beach Open by VITACOST.com.

Lloyd Harris sports a tattoo on his left forearm that reads, “Keep dreaming, keep believing no goal is unreachable.” The South African qualifier has plenty of belief at the Adelaide International, continuing his inspired run on Thursday with a 6-3, 6-3 upset over fourth-seeded Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta to reach the semi-finals.

Harris, No. 91 in the FedEx ATP Rankings, racked up nine break points and converted three. He dropped just seven points on serve to prevail in 67 minutes. Harris matched his best tour-level result when he advanced to the semi-finals as a lucky loser last year in Chengdu.

Adelaide is guaranteed to have a player move into their first ATP Tour final when Harris meets fellow 22-year-old qualifier Tommy Paul. The American moved into his maiden tour-level semi-final with a convincing 6-3, 6-4 victory against Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas. Paul broke into the Top 100 last year on the back of winning three ATP Challenger Tour titles and his first ATP Masters 1000 match in Montreal.

Third seed Andrey Rublev kept up his winning ways by holding off Brit Daniel Evans 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. The Russian moved to 6-0 this season after capturing his third ATP Tour title last week in Doha (d. Moutet), pushing him inside the Top 20 of the ATP Rankings for the first time.

Rublev will face Felix Auger-Aliassime for a spot in the championship match. The #NextGenATP Canadian needed just 55 minutes to move past Australian wild card Alex Bolt 6-3, 6-0. Rublev leads Auger-Aliassime 1-0 in their ATP Head2Head series, winning their only previous meeting in three sets at the Plava Laguna Croatia Open Umag in 2018.

Murray/Skupski Save 1 M.P. To Advance
Jamie Murray/Neal Skupski came out on top in a wild 6-3, 1-6, 13-11 quarter-final against Jurgen Melzer/Edouard Roger-Vasselin. Murray/Skupski saved a match point at 10/11 in the Match Tie-break before prevailing in one hour and 20 minutes. Next up for the British pair are fourth seeds Ivan Dodig/Filip Polasek.

Rajeev Ram/Joe Salisbury encountered few problems in their 6-4, 6-3 victory against Wesley Koolhof/Nikola Mektic. They’ll take on Maximo Gonzalez/Fabrice Martin for a place in the final.

Get To Know Lloyd Harris, South Africa's #NextGenATP Hope

The #NextGenATP wave is getting bigger and bigger and Lloyd Harris is looking to put South Africa on the map among the stars of tomorrow.

The 20 year old battled through to the semi-finals this past week at the Kaohsiung OEC Open in Taiwan, winning four of five tie-breaks over four matches to equal his best result on the ATP Challenger Tour.

Harris’s impressive 2017 campaign has seen him compete at all three tiers of competition. Contending at ITF Futures events at the start of the season, the Cape Town native eventually transitioned to the ATP Challenger Tour as a regular competitor before making his ATP World Tour debut at the inaugural Antalya Open as a lucky loser.

Just inside the Top 300 of the Emirates ATP Rankings at the start of the year, a higher level of tennis has come quickly for the 20 year old, but it has not been without its learning curve. Now up to a career-high at No. 199, the newest member of the #NextGenATP contingent is steadily plotting his ascent.



“Getting to the Challenger level was a big stage for me and it took me a while to get used to it," Harris said. "I don’t think I was consistent enough; I had the game definitely – the serve, the forehand – but not consistent enough.

“Starting out the year, if I think back, I feel like a lot has changed and I’ve made a lot of improvements,” he added. “I really tried, especially in the last few months, to play the highest level of tournaments that I could get into. Trying to go for some ATP qualifying events and playing as many Challengers as possible. I think that’s helped my game tremendously and improved small things quite a lot.”



Last week, Harris managed to successfully qualify for the Shenzhen Open just three months after his first ATP World Tour main draw appearance on the grass of Antalya. He bowed out to eventual finalist Alexandr Dolgopolov. But the South African cites a different match as the turning point in his tennis, when he believed that he belonged with the game’s best.

“I really had a moment when I played in Montreal. I played against Mikhail Youzhny in the [Masters 1000] there ... I ended up losing 7-6 in the final set,” said Harris of his first round qualifying encounter at the Coupe Rogers, a 6-7(4), 7-6(4), 6-7(5) loss to the Russian veteran. “That’s kind of where I realised, ‘okay, you’re on this level. This guy has been Top 10 in the world, you lost 7-6 in the third; it’s just a little stepping stone and you can beat some of these guys.’”

Harris’s own success comes in the wake of a landmark moment for South African tennis: compatriot Kevin Anderson’s astonishing run to the US Open final. In spite of this, Harris and Anderson are just two of three South Africans in the Top 1000 of the Emirates ATP Rankings (the other being Nicolaas Scholtz.) According to the 20 year old, the scarcity of fellow nationals in the rankings isn’t due to a lack of talent.

“Travelling from South Africa, you need to have a fortune of money to travel all over the world. That is one of the big problems,” said Harris, adding that instead of going pro early, many young South Africans elect to go to the American collegiate system for an education and for training – a path that compatriot Anderson himself took.

“Unless you come from a super wealthy family, you’re not going to have enough money to travel freely and around the world, if you're from South Africa. I think with the right systems in place there’s the potential for more players in the Top 1000.”

Standing at 6-foot-5 and citing Roger Federer as an idol, Harris has the booming serve and rocket of a forehand that could see him make a lasting impact in tennis, akin to how Anderson did match after match at Flushing Meadows. Looking ahead, the Emirates ATP Rankings aren’t his biggest concern. Instead, his preparations for 2018 are focused solely on improving his game, including forecourt play and returns.

“I’m not going to talk any goals—that’s going to come in its own way,” added Harris. “If I keep improving on my tennis the way I want to and keep improving the things that I am working on, then I believe that I can become the best player that I can possibly be.”

Russian to face Harris in final

Andrey Rublev extended his unbeaten streak to 11 matches on Friday, overcoming second seed Felix Auger-Aliassime 7-6(5), 6-7(7), 6-4 at the Adelaide International.

The 22-year-old saved nine of 10 break points to advance to his sixth ATP Tour championship match (3-2) in just under three hours. Rublev, who failed to convert two match points in the second set, arrived in Adelaide after picking up his third tour-level trophy in Doha without dropping a set.

”This match was unreal,” said Rublev. “I think people enjoyed it and that is why we are playing tennis. I hope we will bring more and more matches like this.”

Rublev is the first player since 2004 to reach back-to-back finals in the opening two weeks of the season. On that occasion, two men accomplished the feat. Dominik Hrbaty won trophies in Adelaide and Auckland, while Carlos Moya lifted the Chennai trophy and finished as runner-up in Sydney.

”I didn’t expect that I was going to do two finals,” said Rublev. “I didn’t expect that I was going to start the season that well, so we will see what is going to happen next. The most important thing is to keep going, to keep working and to keep improving.”

Rublev improves to 2-0 in his ATP Head2Head series against the Canadian. The Doha champion also beat Auger-Aliassime when the pair met for the first time at the Plava Laguna Croatia Open Umag in 2018.

Auger-Aliassime was bidding to join Alexander Zverev as only the second player since 2008 to reach four ATP Tour finals as a teenager (excluding Next Gen ATP Finals). The Canadian reached his first three tour-level championship matches last year, finishing as runner-up in Rio de Janeiro, Lyon and Stuttgart.

Rublev will face first-time ATP Tour finalist Lloyd Harris for the title. The South African needed two hours and nine minutes to overcome American Tommy Paul 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-3.

”I know that [Harris] is a tough player. He won so many great matches here,” said Rublev. “He is my age. We played juniors in the past, so it is going to be interesting. It is going to be one more battle between two young guys and we will see what is going to happen.”

Last year, Harris made his first tour-level quarter-final and semi-final in Chengdu as a lucky loser. But the World No. 91 has gone one step further in Adelaide, blasting 13 aces and winning 85 per cent of his first-serve points against the man who is one spot ahead of him in the FedEx ATP Rankings.

"I'm so excited to be in the final here in Adelaide. Just ecstatic with the match I played," Harris said. "Looking forward to [the final] tomorrow."

This was the first ATP Tour semi-final between two qualifiers since Roberto Carballes Baena beat Andrej Martin in Quito in 2018. Harris was on the back foot towards the end of the second set, despite recouping a break to force a tie-break, as Paul was taking control of rallies more often and not allowing the South African to dictate play.

But Harris, who defeated fourth seed Pablo Carreno Busta and sixth seed Cristian Garin earlier in the ATP 250 tournament, was undeterred. He lost just two first-serve points in the decider en route to his victory.

This is only the second tournament since the 2004 Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships to feature four semi-finalists under the age of 23 (also 2018 Washington, D.C.).
