Five Things To Know About Emil Ruusuvuori

#NextGenATP Finn Emil Ruusuvuori announced his arrival on Tuesday by scoring his first ATP Tour win against Dennis Novak at the Open Sud de France in Montpellier. The 20-year-old, currently No. 101 in the FedEx ATP Rankings, took a quieter approach to his rapid climb by racking up wins on the ATP Challenger Tour before graduating to tour-level events this year.

ATPTour.com takes a look at five things to know about this rising Finn.

1. He’s Dominated In Challenger Events
Ruusuvuori came alive on the ATP Challenger Tour in the second half of last year. From June-November, the Finn won his first four titles at that level and posted a 32-8 record. He started this year with a runner-up showing in Bendigo, where he defeated 2019 Next Gen ATP Finals champion Jannik Sinner in the second round.

2. He Has Musical Skills
The current #NextGenATP class includes several piano players, including Felix Auger-Aliassime and Ugo Humbert, but Ruusuvuori's hidden talent is that he plays the drums. His favourite musician is rap icon Eminem.

3. He Enjoyed An Outstanding Junior Career
Ruusuvuori peaked at No. 4 in the ITF Junior Rankings in 2017. His highlights that year include winning the ITF Junior Masters and reaching the boys’ singles semi-finals at the US Open.

4. He Trained With Nadal
As a reward for taking the title last September at the Rafa Nadal Open, an ATP Challenger Tour event held at the Spaniard’s academy in Mallorca, he hit with Rafael Nadal during the off-season.

5. He’s Already Beaten The World’s Best
Ruusuvuori made his first win against a Top 100 player an unforgettable one by convincingly beating Dominic Thiem 6-3, 6-2 in a Davis Cup tie last September between Finland and Austria. The confidence he took from that victory sparked two more ATP Challenger Tour titles in his next four events to finish out the year.

#NextGenATP Star Ruusuvuori's Goal: 'A Grand Slam Win'

The Finnish star won four ATP Challenger Tour titles in 2019
When Finland’s Emil Ruusuvuori was five, he remembers playing badminton with his mother at a local sports hall. One day, Mika Muilu, who was watching his daughter’s gymnastics practice, walked up to them.

“He said, ‘You look like you have some hand-eye coordination, so do you want to come play some tennis?’” Ruusuvuori recalled. “That’s how it started. It was one big coincidence that I got into this sport.”

Sixteen years later, Ruusuvuori is one of the ATP Tour’s hottest prospects. The 21-year-old has no doubt about what he wants to achieve on the tennis court.

“A Grand Slam win,” Ruusuvuori said. “That’s a pretty easy question.”

Ruusuvuori is yet to crack the Top 100 of the FedEx ATP Rankings — he is currently at a career-high No. 101 — but the Finn is clearly on the rise. Last June, he was World No. 410, but four ATP Challenger Tour titles ignited his ascent. The first Finnish Challenger champion since Jarkko Nieminen in 2013, he was tied for most trophies at that level last year.

“It all went pretty fast in the end. It wasn’t the easiest year from the start,” said Ruusuvuori, who struggled with some health issues at the end of 2018 and the beginning of 2019. “I learned all the things you have to do at that level… I started winning some matches and then I got the first tournament win and then another one. In the end, it rolled quite well. It was a lot of work to get there, but it was a great, great year overall.”

When Ruusuvuori was young, he watched Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal on television. The Finn was six when Nadal won his first Roland Garros trophy.

Ruusuvuori chose to spend time during his 2019 off-season at the Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar. The #NextGenATP star says there aren’t many players to train with in Finland, so if they are not available, practice plans get complicated. It didn’t hurt that he got to train once with Nadal in Mallorca.

“It’s something really different, the way he hits the ball and how he keeps the practice so intense. It’s something I’d never experienced and it’s one of the best memories I have on the tennis court,” Ruusuvuori said. “From the first ball [it’s amazing] how hard he hits and just throughout the practice how intense he is. In every practice he’s like that, so it’s amazing how he keeps his focus so high. Every single time he gets something out of practice. There were many things you can see and learn from that, even if it was one practice.”

The four-time ATP Challenger Tour champion reached another final at that level to begin 2020, defeating reigning Next Gen ATP Finals titlist Jannik Sinner in straight sets in the Bendigo second round. He then won his first ATP Tour match in Montpellier, gathering momentum before the Tour was suspended due to COVID-19.

“It was for sure tough. There were so many big tournaments coming up I had never played, like Indian Wells. We got there, practised, and then the tournament wasn’t played. It wasn’t easy,” Ruusuvuori said. “There were a lot of good opportunities coming up, and I thought I was playing well.”

Ruusuvuori understood the situation was out of his control. The Finn stayed as busy as possible during the pandemic, working on fitness when it wasn’t safe to play tennis. His coach, Federico Ricci — who co-founded the Jarkko Nieminen Tennis Academy — also got him studying.

“Since we had a lot of time, he gave me classic matches to watch from Agassi, Sampras, guys like that,” Ruusuvuori said. “We tried to look at things they did, what the best guys do to try to get a couple points that you could try to get into your game.”

Ruusuvuori watched the 2001 US Open quarter-final between Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras, in which there were no service breaks in four tie-break sets. He also watched Marat Safin’s five-set victory against Roger Federer in the 2005 Australian Open semi-finals.

“Those were some pretty good matches to watch,” Ruusuvuori said. “I’ve also watched classic matches in the past, but seeing what they did and how things were then [helps]. Agassi still played against many of the players who are still on Tour, so there are a lot of similar things. It was nice.”

Ruusuvuori builds his game around his serve and forehand, and he believes he doesn’t have any glaring weaknesses. He’ll hope to show the world that when tennis returns. The Finn is most excited for the US Open, where he is scheduled to make his Grand Slam main draw debut.

“I’m just excited to get back to official matches,” Ruusuvuori said. “We’ve practised a lot now, so it’ll be nice to get back to playing.”

Emil Ruusuvuori made the most of his ATP Masters 1000 qualifying debut on Thursday in Flushing Meadows. The #NextGenATP Finn upset World No. 59 Jeremy Chardy 6-0, 6-4 to reach the final round of qualifying at the Western & Southern Open.

The 21-year-old performed well under pressure against the French veteran, saving all three break points he faced while converting each of the four break points he earned. Ruusuvuori won 67 per cent of his second-serve return points in a 61-minute victory.

Last year, Ruusuvuori became the youngest player to win four ATP Challenger Tour titles in a season since Hyeon Chung in 2015. He will try to make his maiden Masters 1000 main draw when he faces 20th seed Thiago Monteiro, who ousted Argentine Federico Coria 6-3, 6-4.

Ruusuvuori will also make his Masters 1000 main-draw debut after Brazilian opponent Thiago Monteiro retired trialing 4-6, 1-2. Just 14 months ago Ruusuvuori was outside the Top 400. But after winning four Challenger titles he is now just one place away from cracking the Top 100 of the FedEx ATP Rankings. In the first round of qualifying he ousted veteran Frenchman Jeremy Chardy 6-0, 6-4.

“It’s a good achievement. My team and I chose to play all the big tournaments as much as possible, just to be around with these top guys and play against them,” Ruusuvuori said. “I played well in my first two matches here, so I’ll try to do it again and we’ll see how it goes.”

Twelve months ago, Emil Ruusuvuori was outside the Top 200 of the FedEx ATP Rankings. What a difference a year makes.

The Finn rallied past fellow #NextGenATP star Sebastian Korda 7-6(3), 4-6, 7-5 on Sunday to reach the second round of the Western & Southern Open, earning his first ATP Masters 1000 main draw victory.

“It was a really difficult match, especially mentally. There were a lot of ups and downs. I didn’t play the best at any time in this match. But I survived, that’s the key,” Ruusuvuori, a qualifier, said. “That’s how it goes sometimes. I’m just really happy we got through it.”

Ruusuvuori neared the finish line when he led 7-6(3), 4-2, but in a flash Korda turned the tide to win the second set and move ahead 5-2 in the decider. The Finn didn’t panic, though, remaining solid to win 20 of the final 22 points, advancing after two hours and seven minutes.

“I had him in the second set, there’s no doubt about it,” Ruusuvuori said. “But then it was one of the biggest comebacks in my career.”

The 21-year-old is guaranteed to crack the Top 100 of the FedEx ATP Rankings for the first time when next Monday's standings are published.

“That was one of the big goals for sure,” Ruusuvuori said. “But it’s just one of the goals. It’s a long season and the career is long. Just one step at a time. Now that’s behind me and then we’ll just go for the next goals.”

Ruusuvuori, who also beat Korda in the 2017 US Open boys’ singles event, is the first Finn to win a match in the Western & Southern Open main draw since Jarkko Nieminen in 2013. He will face a stiff test in the next round against sixth seed Matteo Berrettini.

“He’s one of the best players on Tour at the moment. I’m sure after this break he’s going to come up with some good tennis,” Ruusuvuori said. “I have to show my best tennis if I want to keep up with him and I’m sure it’s going to be a fun match. He’s one of the best players, I have nothing to lose. We’ll see how it goes.”

Ruusuvori practised with Berrettini at Indian Wells this year before the BNP Paribas Open was cancelled due to COVID-19 concerns. His coach, Federico Ricci, is Italian and has known Berrettini for years. The #NextGenATP star is looking forward to the challenge.

“Tomorrow’s the next match,” Ruusuvori said. “We’ll just have to focus on that, do the best we can to recover from this one and show the best tennis we can tomorrow.”
