Gael Monfils brought his best tennis when he had to on Wednesday to advance past Brit Cameron Norrie at the Huajin Securities Zhuhai Championships 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.

The third-seeded Frenchman was struggling in the conditions in the second set, leaning on his racquet for support in between points. But the 33-year-old played hot-shot worthy tennis to break Norrie at 4-4 in the third set and served it out to reach the quarter-finals at the ATP 250.

"I'm very happy because it's tough conditions out here. It's always tricky the first match, every time with new conditions. I'm not quite yet ready, because of the jet lag. I'm still battling, but I'm quite happy I could pull up this one tonight. It was important for my confidence," Monfils said.

Ninth-seeded Frenchman Gael Monfils booked his place in the Rolex Shanghai Masters second round on Monday with a 7-5, 6-7(1), 6-3 victory over Lorenzo Sonego of Italy in two hours and 38 minutes. He will next face Hubert Hurkacz of Poland.

Monfils added 45 points to his 2019 ATP Race To London tally and moved to within 10 points of 11th-placed Japanese Kei Nishikori (2,180), who remains sidelined due to injury. There are three remaining singles berths left up for grabs at the Nitto ATP Finals, to be held at The O2 in London from 10-17 November. Gael Monfils will get his rematch with #NextGenATP Italian Jannik Sinner. The Frenchman, who's in contention for the season-ending Nitto ATP Finals, rallied to beat Austrian wild card Dennis Novak 2-6, 7-5, 6-3.

Monfils hit 13 aces and converted all three break points. He will next face the 18-year-old Sinner, who continued his impressive run by beating German veteran Philipp Kohlschreiber on Tuesday. Sinner beat Monfils last week en route to the semi-finals of the European Open in Antwerp (l. to Wawrinka). The Italian became the youngest ATP Tour semi-finalist since Borna Coric at the 2014 Swiss Indoors Basel.

Monfils added 45 points to his ATP Race To London tally with the first-round win and moved into 12th place in the Race, passing Japan's Kei Nishikori. Monfils, with 2,215 points, trails Berrettini by 355 points.

Gael Monfils gained revenge against #NextGenATP Italian Jannik Sinner with a 6-3, 7-6(8).

Sinner beat Monfils last week en route to the European Open semi-finals, but Monfils hit 17 aces and won 83 per cent (40/48) of his first-serve points to advance. The Frenchman led 5/1 in the second-set tie-break but had to save a set point at 7/8 before clinching the quarter-final appearance.

Gael Monfils moved inside the Top 10 in the ATP Race To London on Friday, after his 7-5, 6-1 victory against Aljaz Bedene at the Erste Bank Open.

The fourth seed claimed 81 per cent of first-serve points (29/36) to earn his 35th tour-level victory of the season after 70 minutes. Monfils improves to 14-5 at the ATP 500 event, where he reached the championship match in 2008.

“I am serving better and better… I had a very good rhythm with my serve,” said Monfils. “My movement is great. I think I can play better tennis.”

The 33-year-old overtakes David Goffin and Fabio Fognini to occupy 10th position in the Race after earning 90 points for the quarter-final victory. Monfils is just 310 points behind Matteo Berrettini, who occupies the eighth and final qualification position. Berrettini defeated Andrey Rublev to reach his eighth tour-level semi-final of the year in the first match of the day on Center Court.

The Frenchman will meet fellow London contender Diego Schwartzman for a place in Sunday’s final. Monfils owns a 2-1 FedEx ATP Head2Head record against the Argentine, who beat Karen Khachanov in straight sets to reach the last four.

Monfils is attempting to lift his second indoor ATP Tour trophy of the year this week. The World No. 14 captured his eighth tour-level crown at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament in February.

Appearing in his second quarter-final at the tournament, Bedene was aiming to reach the semi-finals in Vienna for the first time. The 30-year-old, who also advanced to the last eight in 2012, reached his first indoor ATP Tour final at the Moselle Open last month.

Last week, at the Swiss Indoors Basel, Zverev lost to Taylor Fritz in the first round.

The Italian won three matches at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna, where he reached the semi-finals (l. to Thiem) to further strengthen his position in eighth in the ATP Race To London. The 23-year-old leads ninth-placed Roberto Bautista Agut by just 130 points, and currently needs to advance to the Paris final to book his spot at the season finale.

The Spaniard reached the Swiss Indoors Basel quarter-finals (l. to Opelka) for the third straight year and sits in ninth position in the ATP Race To London, with one week left in the regular ATP Tour season.

The Belgian, who has a shot at competing at The O2 in London for a third time, trails Berrettini by 310 points. Having served as an alternate in 2016, Goffin qualified outright the following year, when he went 2-2 en route to the title match at the Nitto ATP Finals (l. to Dimitrov).

The Italian, who has gone 6-5 since a US Open first-round exit, must lift his second ATP Masters 1000 crown this week in Paris to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals. The 32-year-old won the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters title in April (d. Lajovic).

Gael Monfils kept up the pressure on Alexander Zverev and Matteo Berrettini in their bids to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals with a second-round victory at the Rolex Paris Masters on Wednesday.

Monfils, the No. 13 seed and runner-up at the ATP Masters 1000 event in 2009 and 2010, knocked out fellow Frenchman Benoit Paire 6-4, 7-6(4) in 86 minutes to add 90 points to his 2019 ATP Race To London tally.

The 33-year-old Monfils is currently in 11th position (2,440 points), 220 points behind eighth-placed Berrettini (2,660), who plays 2008 Paris champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga later today. Monfils appeared at the 2016 season finale at The O2 in London.

“I want to wrap up the season on a good note and to fulfill my goal for this year, which was to be back in the Top 10. And we know how daunting it is,” Monfils said. “I'm nearly there. So, whew, I'm going to continue to get close to that goal.”

Monfils escaped from 0/40 at 2-2 in the first set, and, after Paire hit his first double fault of the match at 4-5, 30/30, Monfils struck a brilliant forehand down the line to clinch the 33-minute opener.

Paire took a 2/0 lead in the second set tie-break, but his forehand soon began to break down and Monfils won the next four points. The match ended when Paire hit a forehand volley into the net.

Monfils, who captured his eighth ATP Tour title at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament (d. Wawrinka) in February, is now 36-17 on the season and goes on to face Moldovan Radu Albot on Thursday.

“He doesn't make mistakes. He plays deep. We have to go to the net to get winners,” Monfils said. “His serve is better. But he doesn't have a big serve, so I'll have to be more aggressive on the second ball.”

De Minaur

Elsewhere, Australia’s Alex de Minaur, who will bid to retain his title at the Next Gen ATP Finals next week in Milan, held his nerve to beat the consistent Roberto Bautista Agut, who sits in ninth position in the 2019 ATP Race To London (2,530 points).

De Minaur moved up one place to 17th (1,775 points) after a 7-6(2), 7-6(1) win over Bautista Agut in two hours and 17 minutes, having recovered from a 3-5 deficit and saved two set points at 4-5 in the second set.

He will now challenge seventh seed and first-time Nitto ATP Finals qualifier Stefanos Tsitsipas, who won 35 of 38 first-service points in a 7-6(3), 6-3 win over American Taylor Fritz in 74 minutes. Tsitsipas is now 49-23 in a career-best season, which includes two ATP Tour titles at the Open 13 Provence (d. Kukushkin) and at the Millennium Estoril Open (d. Cuevas).
