Frenchman puts on a show in Dubai

Frenchman Gael Monfils was at his acrobatic and entertaining best on Tuesday at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. He and Marin Cilic had split the first two sets, and Monfils wanted to set the tone of the third set early.

Serving at 30/0, the Frenchman delivered a near service winner down the T that Cilic barely got a racquet on. The ball hung in the air before Monfils took control of the point, rocketing a forehand to Cilic's backhand corner. Then the real fireworks began.

Cilic replied with a soft backhand lob, and Monfils leaped into the air for the tomahawk. “Ahhh, the slam dunk!” the announcer shouted.

His fellow commentator added, “That's worth the entrance money, isn't it?”

Monfils held to love and won 83 per cent of the points in the decider (24/29) to cruise to a 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 win. He will next meet Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis.

In the same section of the draw, 18th seed Gael Monfils battled past Argentine Leonardo Mayer 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in one hour and 59 minutes. The Frenchman advances to face Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas, who ousted 15th seed Marco Cecchinato 6-4, 6-2.

Monfils is in good form, having lifted his eighth ATP Tour trophy at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament. The 32-year-old was also impressive in reaching the semi-finals of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, another ATP 500 event.

Monfils lost just six service points in the deciding set against Mayer, taking advantage of the Argentine’s low first-serve percentage (29%) to reach the third round in Indian Wells for his fifth straight appearance.

Gael Monfils’ resurgence continued on Monday in Indian Wells, as the 18th-seeded Frenchman defeated Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-0, 6-3 to reach the fourth round of the BNP Paribas Open.

The 32-year-old, who advanced to the semi-finals in his past three events, is now 14-3 in 2019. He captured his second ATP 500 trophy in February at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam.

You can say that ‘La Monf’ was in ‘La Zone’ on Wednesday evening in Indian Wells.

Gael Monfils, the 18th seed, eliminated German Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-0, 6-2 to reach the quarter-finals of the BNP Paribas Open just one day after Kohlschreiber stunned World No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the third round.

Monfils has enjoyed a tremendous start to 2019, winning 15 of 18 matches. That is the 32-year-old’s best start to a season in 15 years on the ATP Tour. This week, Monfils returned to the Top 20 of the ATP Rankings (at No. 19) for the first time since July 2017.

This was Monfils’ sixth consecutive win against Kohlschreiber, and he now leads their FedEx ATP Head2Head series 14-2. If the Frenchman would have played Djokovic, the Serbian leads their rivalry 15-0.


But from the first game, Monfils appeared completely locked in. While Kohlschreiber’s heavy groundstrokes affected Djokovic’s rhythm on Wednesday, Monfils never looked out of his comfort zone, striking stunning winners when given opportunities to step inside the baseline and using his speed to win many of the match’s cat-and-mouse points.

Monfils not only broke Kohlschreiber’s serve five times, but he did not face a break point in his 58-minute triumph, which included a 21-minute first set. It appeared the German might scratch and claw his way into the fourth-round clash when he saved a break point to hold in his first service game of the second set. But Kohlschreiber did not have enough weapons to pressure this year’s Rotterdam champion.

Since losing the second set of his opening-round encounter with Argentine Leonardo Mayer, Monfils has not allowed a set to go past 6-3 in Indian Wells. He will next face seventh seed Dominic Thiem for a spot in the semi-finals.

Reilly Opelka has never needed help adding to his ace count on the ATP Tour, but the American received plenty on Wednesday to leave Gael Monfils amused and confused at the Millennium Estoril Open.

The 21-year-old landed his fifth ace of the match in strange circumstances, as the wind on Estadio Millennium diverted his serve to leave Monfils stranded at the baseline. Serving at 6-3, 2-5 (40/30), Opelka's delivery appeared to be heading towards Monfils after landing in the middle of the service box, but a strong gust of wind blew the ball away from the Frenchman to hand the New York Open champion his ninth game of the match.

Monfils responded well to the unexpected ace, laughing and giving a 'thumbs up' to his opponent before motoring to victory. Following the humorous incident, the eight-time ATP Tour titlist claimed seven straight games to secure a 3-6, 6-3, 6-0 win.
