Home favourite guarantees French finalist in Marseille
Pierre-Hugues Herbert ended Stefanos Tsitsipas’ hopes of a third straight Open 13 Provence crown on Friday, when he defeated the Greek 6-7(6), 6-4, 6-2 in Marseille.
The unseeded Frenchman won 79 per cent of first-serve points (37/47) to claim his first Top 5 win (1-6) and reach his first semi-final since June 2019 (Halle). Herbert improved to 2-0 in his ATP Head2Head series against Tsitsipas, following his 2018 win against the 6’4” right-hander in Shenzhen.
“I didn’t know this was the first Top 5 [player] that I beat,” Herbert said in an on-court interview. “It has been an incredible week for me so far, especially [with] this match. I knew I was going to have to play an amazing match to have a chance to win and I managed to do that. I am really happy about the way I played. I am so happy to be in the semi-finals here.”
How To Watch
Tsitsipas entered the match on a nine-match winning streak in Marseille, which included title runs at the ATP 250 in 2019 and 2020. The World No. 5 was attempting to reach his third semi-final of the year, after runs to the final four at the Australian Open and the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam.
“I didn’t deserve to win today,” said Tsitsipas. “He showed a great quality out on the court to persevere and win that match. [The win was] very well earned. Too bad for me.”
Tsitsipas began the quarter-final on an 18-set winning streak in Marseille and that run was almost ended in the first set. After failing to serve out the opener at 5-4, Tsitsipas needed his best tennis to claim the first set in a tie-break. The Greek played with aggression on his forehand and rushed the net from 4/5 to claim four of the next five points and the set.
Herbert was able to end Tsitsipas’ set streak in the second set. The Frenchman attacked Tsitsipas’ forehand with consistent depth to claim the only break of the set at 4-4 and he fired four unreturned serves to hold to love and force a decider. The Frenchman continued to attack Tsitsipas’ forehand and utilised his net skills to earn three service breaks in the deciding set. Herbert closed the match with a powerful serve out wide and an overhead winner.

“Against Stefanos, from the baseline, he is much better. I had to do something,” said Herbert. “I had to come to the net. I had to be aggressive and not let him manage the point with his forehand. He has one of the best forehands of all time, so I had to play offensive and it worked. I had my plan and I played it really perfectly. I am really happy about the win.”
Herbert’s win guaranteed a French finalist in Marseille. The 29-year-old will face fourth seed Ugo Humbert or French qualifier Arthur Rinderknech for a place in the final. Herbert has not met either player at tour-level.
“That is good. It means there is going to be a French [player] in the final,” said Herbert. “I am happy about that and I hope it is going to be me.”

Why Herbert Was Thrilled With A 4:40 a.m. Wakeup In Marseille
Spoiler:
Frenchman reflects on life as a father
A 4:40 a.m. wakeup is not usually ideal for a tennis player the morning of an ATP Tour semi-final. But Pierre-Hugues Herbert wouldn’t have it any other way right now.
The Frenchman’s fiancée, Julia Lang, gave birth to their first child, Harper, last September. It has been a life-changing six months for the No. 93 player in the FedEx ATP Rankings, who beat countryman Ugo Humbert on Saturday to reach the Open 13 Provence final.
“It’s been for sure an exciting time. Having a baby changes your life. I didn’t know that before having one, but for sure it changes your view of life and also you need to adapt,” Herbert said. “For me, this week is pretty special because the beginning of the year has been hard. I’ve been away from family [for] five weeks in Australia, again away from family in Rotterdam. I didn’t see them a lot and I’m just so happy to have them right now with me at this tournament.”
How To Watch
That’s why getting woken up in the middle of the night did not bother Herbert.
“I was just happy to be woken up, almost. It didn’t go long, it was just to be fed and then go back to sleep so I could recover,” Herbert said. “I’m just so happy to be in this situation where I live those things. It’s life. It’s just amazing.”
Herbert will play top seed Daniil Medvedev for the Marseille trophy. The 29-year-old has been in top form at this ATP 250, where he has already defeated Top 10 star Stefanos Tsitsipas and former World No. 4 Kei Nishikori.

“I’m really happy about my match [against Humbert] and how I managed to come back on court after my win yesterday against Tsitsipas and still play a good match,” Herbert said. “I’m really proud of that and about the final, I play Daniil, third in the world, second [next week]. [He is] a player I’ve played already and a big champion. For sure it’s going to be an interesting final. I’m so happy to be in it and to be able to play such a final.”
Herbert has won all four Grand Slam championships in doubles with Nicolas Mahut, and he has previously reached three ATP Tour singles finals. If he upsets Medvedev on Sunday, Herbert will earn his first tour-level singles crown. Regardless of the result, the Frenchman is happy to be competing in front of his son.
“It’s a pretty special place where I’m at right now,” Herbert said. “I still have goals with my tennis and right now I’m just happy to be on court, happy to be with my family, so maybe you feel it when I’m on court.”

Spoiler:
Tsitsipas brothers rally from 7/9 in match tie-break
Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut made a winning start to their Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters title bid on Tuesday with a 6-4, 6-4 win against Simone Bolelli and Jannik Sinner.
The 2016 champions won 90 per cent of their first-serve points (28/31) to move past their Italian rivals in 75 minutes. Herbert and Mahut are attempting to capture their first title of the season in Monte-Carlo. The Frenchmen own a 7-3 team record in 2021.
In a match played across two days due to rain, Petros Tsitsipas and Stefanos Tsitsipas saved two match points to eliminate eighth seeds Kevin Krawietz and Horia Tecau 7-6(4), 3-6, 11-9. Play resumed on Tuesday with the Tsitsipas brothers holding a 6-3 lead and, after dropping the second set, the Greeks were forced to save two match points from 7/9 in the match Tie-break to reach the next round.
Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury recovered from a set down to beat Marcelo Melo and Jean-Julien Rojer 4-6, 6-1, 10-8. The fifth seeds will next face Raven Klaasen and Ben McLachlan, who held their nerves to beat Alex de Minaur and John Peers 7-6(3), 3-6, 11-9.
Sixth seeds Wesley Koolhof and Lukasz Kubot also claimed their spot in the second round with a 7-6(2), 6-3 win against Adrian Mannarino and Benoit Paire.
