"If I play like today, I'll definitely have a chance to be dictating, to lead the game. So I'm really happy with where I am right now. just going to try to take it to Taro."

Japan booked its place at the 2019 Davis Cup Finals in dramatic fashion on Saturday, recovering from 1-2 down to claim victory against China in Guangzhou. Having split the opening singles rubbers, Mao-Xin Gong and Ze Zhang earned China a 2-1 lead with a 5-7, 7-5, 6-4 win over Ben McLachlan and Yasutaka Uchiyama, as the host nation aimed to defeat Japan for just the second time in 10 Davis Cup ties. But Yoshihito Nishioka forced the meeting into a decisive fifth rubber after cruising past Yibing Wu 6-2, 6-0.
“Before going onto the court, I was so nervous because if I lost, we lost," Nishioka told DavisCup.com. "It is the first time I have been in that situation. [Wu] is talented but I knew he would be feeling the pressure. So, from the beginning, I was trying so hard. He missed some easy shots and I was able to play the way I wanted to play.”
With a spot in Madrid on the line, Taro Daniel edged Zhe Li 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-3 in two hours and 44 minutes. Daniel, who defeated Zhang on Friday, converted seven of 16 break points to record his second victory of the tie.

Australia backed up its opening singles rubber victories, sweeping past Bosnia and Herzegovina 4-0 in Adelaide. John Peers and Jordan Thompson defeated Mirza Basic and Tomislav Brkic 7-5, 6-1 to claim an unassailable 3-0 lead, before Davis Cup debutant Alexei Popyrin claimed his first victory in the team competition, beating Nerman Fatic 6-1, 7-6(2) in 61 minutes.

Andreas Seppi booked Italy's place in Madrid, beating Prajnesh Gunneswaran 6-1, 6-4 to seal a 3-1 win in Kolkata. After establishing a 2-0 lead on Friday, Italy was forced into a fourth rubber following Pune champions Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan's 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory against Matteo Berrettini and Simone Bolelli. But Seppi held his nerve, dropping just three points behind his first serve (25/28) en route to victory to earn qualification for the visiting nation.
KAZAKHSTAN 3, PORTUGAL 1
Venue: National Tennis Center, Astana, Kazakhstan
Surface: Hard, Indoors
Kazakhstan will also be present in the Spanish capital, following Mikhail Kukushkin's 6-4, 6-1 win over Joao Sousa. Having lost both opening singles rubbers, Portugal forced the tie into a fourth rubber after Gastao Elias and Sousa defeated Timur Khabibulin and Aleksandr Nedovyesov 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. But Kukushkin found his best level in front of home fans in Astana, breaking Sousa on five occasions to settle the tie.

Japanese talks how his big win against Djokovic affected him
Players spend their lives dreaming of that big win, the victory that makes the world stop, recognise their names – maybe learn how to pronounce them – and hear their stories.
Japan's Taro Daniel beat current World No. 1 Novak Djokovic last year at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells for the biggest win of his nine-year career. And for a while, the upset felt exactly like he thought it would – life-changing, validating, satisfying.
“At that moment I won, it did feel like something big, and that's how I thought it was going to feel like,” Daniel told ATPTour.com. “But then 40 minutes later, everything's the same.”
He had another match to prepare for, then another tournament to travel to, and then another match to prepare for...
“In the end, it's just a match, and then the Tour goes on, life goes on. You still have to grind some [ATP Challenger Tour] matches, you still have weeks where you can't win matches,” Daniel said. “It did help me in terms of getting more recognition perhaps, but yeah, life still goes on.”
Daniel
The “What have you done for me lately?” world can be cruel: Beat the best player in the world, and you have to back it up again, and again and again. But for Daniel, the daily tennis grind did improve after his headline win against Djokovic.
Two months later, a more confident Daniel won his maiden ATP Tour title at the TEB BNP Paribas Istanbul Open. The Japanese reached a new career-high of No. 64 in the ATP Rankings in August. “Last year was a pretty big step up,” he said.
This year, Daniel has his eyes solely on the future as he looks to construct a more complete game for himself and secure more wins over Djokovic and his peers at the top of the ATP Rankings. The 26-year-old Japanese, who was born in New York but moved to Japan as a baby, spent ages 13-23 training in Valencia, Spain, where the focus was on his groundstrokes and rallies.
“Very endurance based, a lot of crosscourt rallies... trying to not go for aces, trying to build up the point with a kick serve and get your forehand,” Daniel said.

The strategies provided a consistent tennis base for him, but lately he's been trying to build a more complete game, including taking advantage of his 6'3”, 190-pound frame.
“I'm not going to be better than, for example, a Nishioka or a Schwartzman from the baseline, because no matter how hard I work they're always going to move better than me,” Daniel said.
“I have to have that offensive side of my game... My serve, I have to improve my volleys, which I basically never trained until a couple years ago. Those things are adding up nicely, but it still has to really naturally come. I think it will still take a little bit more time.”
Adding new tactics and trying to change years' worth of patterns can produce up-and-down results. Daniel made the quarter-finals at this week's Banque Eric Sturdza Geneva Open and at the Grand Prix Hassan II in April in Marrakech. But before April, he hadn't made a quarter-final in eight months, since last August at the Winston-Salem Open.

“We're focusing now on getting more aggressive overall without losing his DNA of consistency,” said Gustavo Marcaccio, Daniel's coach since July 2018. “He has already improved his serve significantly, but he could improve it even more... Little by little, he will become a big server in the game.
“As far as returns, it's the same thing... He could easily attack the second serve a little more.”
Daniel heads to Roland Garros in a good – but precarious – spot. He didn't have to play qualifying before the season's second Grand Slam – good news. But his ATP Ranking has slipped to No. 107, at least eight spots away from where he'd like to be to help him secure main-draw entry into future Grand Slams.
But Daniel, a 10-year veteran on the ATP Tour, knows better than most that the tennis life can be like this: highs, lows and everything in between.
“It goes away really quick – all the good weeks. Before you know it you have to defend the points... It's a constant struggle... You try to keep the load the light as possible, try to concentrate on improvement instead of the material side of it,” Daniel said. “It's a long process.”

The odds were not in Taro Daniel’s favour when the Japanese player stepped onto Colosseum at Ariake Tennis Park on Tuesday in Tokyo. The 26-year-old had never won a match at this tournament, nor had he won a main draw match at an event above the ATP 250-level since February.
But Daniel rose to the occasion with the Japanese fans fully behind him, upsetting second seed Borna Coric 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(5) to reach the second round of the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships.

Revisit the week that was on the ATP Challenger Tour, as we applaud the achievements of those on the rise and look ahead to the week to come...
A LOOK BACK
Tennis Challenger Hamburg presented by Tannenhof (Hamburg, Germany): Taro Daniel started well and he finished even stronger. In January, the 27-year-old kicked off 2020 with a title in Burnie, Australia, and on Sunday, he concluded his ATP Challenger Tour campaign with another crown. Daniel dominated in Hamburg to cap the season in impressive fashion. He routed Sebastian Ofner 6-1, 6-2 to lift the trophy.
It was the seventh Challenger title in total for the Japanese and his first indoor crown. After earning a pair of deciding-set victories to open the week, Daniel dropped a combined eight games to streak past the finish line. He needed just 70 minutes to blitz Ofner in Sunday's championship.
"I had a great week in Hamburg and kept developing my play," said Daniel. "Today I made it very difficult for my opponent and never let him get into the game. I am very happy and hope that I can take the momentum with me into the next tournament."
Under the tutelage of Sven Groeneveld, Daniel rises eight spots to No. 114 in the FedEx ATP Rankings. Two years removed from reaching a career-high No. 64, when he captured his lone ATP Tour title in Istanbul, the Japanese is mounting another charge towards the Top 100.
AnyTech365 Marbella Open (Marbella, Spain): The Puente Romano Club was the centre of Spanish tennis on Sunday, as home hopes Pedro Martinez and Jaume Munar battled for the Marbella title. Martinez would cap a strong week on the clay of the AnyTech365 Marbella Open with a 7-6(4), 6-2 victory.
Two weeks after finishing runner-up to another Spaniard, Carlos Alcaraz, in Alicante, the 23-year-old was hungry to emerge with the trophy. He dropped just one set all tournament, concluding with straight-set wins over recent Iasi champion Carlos Taberner and recent Lisbon winner Munar.
"This title means a lot to me," said Martinez. "It was the icing on the cake to a good year. I have had a negative balance in Challenger finals, but to be able to win here in Spain gives me a lot of confidence. The truth is that I feel very satisfied."
Martinez
That 'negative balance' Martinez mentioned was a 1-3 career record in finals on the ATP Challenger Tour, entering the week. Two years after lifting his lone previous trophy on the circuit, in Bastad, the Spaniard made the most of his week in Marbella. He rises 11 spots to a career-high No. 82 in the FedEx ATP Rankings.
Martinez has been a breakout star since the tour's restart in August. He secured his first ATP Masters 1000 match win in Rome, where he also earned his first victory over a Top 50 opponent (d. Querrey). Then, the 23-year-old battled to the third round at Roland Garros as a qualifier to make his Top 100 debut. And he concludes his season in style, reaching back-to-back Challenger finals and lifting the trophy in Marbella.

A LOOK AHEAD
Lorenzo Musetti returns on home soil in Parma, competing in his first indoor hard-court tournament since February. He is joined by top seed Gregoire Barrere, J.J. Wolf and a pair of fellow 18-year-olds in Giulio Zeppieri and Jack Draper.
The week's other tournament will be held on the carpet courts of Eckental, Germany, where Kamil Majchrzak leads the field. Alexei Popyrin is seeded second, while Ilya Ivashka and Evgeny Donskoy are also in action. Sebastian Korda will look to carry the momentum from a fourth-round finish at Roland Garros. The #NextGenATP star remains in search of his maiden Challenger crown.
