Andrey Rublev is a four-time ATP Tour titlist and he currently sits at a career-high No. 14 in the FedEx ATP Rankings.

1) He Reached The US Open Quarter-Finals In 2017
Just more than a month after lifting his maiden ATP Tour trophy at the 2017 Plava Laguna Croatia Open Umag, Rublev achieved the best Grand Slam finish of his career so far at the 2017 US Open. The 19-year-old advanced to the quarter-finals in New York, beating two Top 15 players to become the youngest US Open quarter-finalist since Andy Roddick in 2001.

The 6’2” right-hander beat recently-crowned Cincinnati champion Grigor Dimitrov and David Goffin — both men reached the 2017 Nitto ATP Finals championship match — in straight sets en route to the last eight. Rafael Nadal, who went on to claim his third of four US Open trophies, ended Rublev's run.

2) He Faced A Setback In 2018
After ending a breakthrough 2017 season with a run to the inaugural Next Gen ATP Finals championship match, Rublev’s hopes of continuing his rise up the FedEx ATP Rankings were derailed by injury in 2018.

Rublev began the 2018 ATP Tour season in impressive form, reaching his second ATP Tour final at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open (l. to Monfils) and back-to-back quarter-finals in Montpellier and Rotterdam. But a lower back stress fracture forced the Russian to miss three months of the year and spend three hours a day at a clinic doing magnetotherapy. He said the rest of his day was spent eating lunch and sitting on the sofa.

“That time was really tough for me,” said Rublev. “I remember I didn’t watch any tennis matches... all the guys were playing and competing. They were on Tour and I was there on the sofa doing nothing."

3) He Wasted No Time Against Federer In Cincinnati Last Year
“It’s my biggest and the most emotional win."

At last year’s Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati, Rublev recorded the quickest victory against Roger Federer in more than 16 years.

Competing at No. 70 in the FedEx ATP Rankings, the two-time Next Gen ATP Finals qualifier earned a 62-minute win against Federer with consistent forehand aggression. It was the fastest win any player had recorded against the 20-time Grand Slam champion since Franco Squillari defeated the Swiss in 54 minutes to advance to the second round at 2003 Sydney. (No times are available for Davis Cup matches and 2000 and 2004 Olympic matches.)


4) Injuries Have Helped Him Appreciate The Sport
After missing three months of 2018 with a lower back stress fracture, Rublev also missed six weeks of the 2019 ATP Tour season with a right wrist injury.

At his comeback event, the NOVENTI OPEN in Halle, Rublev struggled to find his form in a third-set tie-break loss to Mats Moraing in the first qualifying round. But, after all his time away from the court, he had learned to find joy from competing rather than results.

“I appreciated everything I had after the second injury… I remember after that match I was a little bit disappointed, but not as much as before,” said Rublev. “But I said, ‘Finally, I’m playing’. Even though I was playing badly, I enjoyed that moment. Even playing like that, I wanted to play. After that I appreciated what I had. I won one round at Wimbledon and took steps forward, little-by-little. I finished the season well.

5) He Made A Stunning Start To 2020
In the first two weeks of the 2020 ATP Tour season, Rublev entered the history books. The 22-year-old became the first player since Dominik Hrbaty in 2004 to win two trophies in the opening two weeks of a season, claiming titles in Doha and Adelaide.

“I was not thinking about [this statistic], but it's an amazing feeling… I'm really happy. I hope I keep working. I hope I keep improving, and we'll see what's going to happen," said Rublev.

The Russian did not drop a set en route to the trophy in Doha, before surviving three-set battles against Daniel Evans and Felix Auger-Aliassime to reach the Adelaide final. In the championship match, he needed just 56 minutes to charge past Lloyd Harris and earn a 12th straight tour-level victory. The Russian extended his winning run to 15 matches at the Australian Open, before Alexander Zverev beat him in the fourth round.

Wielu tenisistów na razie bez entuzjazmu podchodzi do startu w US Open, który rozegrany zostanie w dniach 31 sierpnia - 13 września, przy wprowadzeniu szeregu ograniczeń. Mowa m.in. o izolacji tenisistów w hotelu, częstych testach na koronawirusa i ograniczeniu liczby osób ze sztabów szkoleniowych. Wątpliwości, czy warto grać w Nowym Jorku, mają największe gwiazdy, z Novakiem Djokoviciem i Rafaelem Nadalem na czele.
Trudne warunki nie zniechęcają Andrieja Rublowa (ATP 14). - Wielu tenisistom nie odpowiadają ograniczenia. Dokładnie nie wiem którym, bo nie brałem udziału w konferencji. Marin Cilić i Andriej Rublow w miniony weekend rywalizowali w rozgrywanym w Zadarze drugim turnieju charytatywnego cyklu Adria Tour. Impreza została przerwana po tym, jak uczestniczący w zawodach Grigor Dimitrow miał pozytywny wynik testu na obecność koronawirusa.
W poniedziałek okazało się, że zakażeni COVID-19 są również dwaj inni tenisiści, Borna Corić i Viktor Troicki, z którymi w ostatnich dniach Cilić i Rublow mieli kontakt. Wobec tego, aby zminimalizować ryzyko potencjalnego zakażenia osób ze swojego otoczenia, Chorwat oraz Rosjanin poinformowali, że udadzą się na dwutygodniową izolację.


"Udaję na 14-dniową izolację, mimo że wynik mojego testu był negatywny. Ważne jest, abyśmy wszyscy pomogli ograniczyć możliwość rozprzestrzeniania się infekcji. Jeśli nastąpią jakieś zmiany, poinformuję - napisał na Twitterze Cilić.

U czterech uczestników cyklu (Novaka Djokovicia, Grigora Dimitrowa, Borny Coricia i Viktora Troickiego) zdiagnozowano zakażenie koronawirusem, wobec czego Rosjanin poddał się dobrowolnej 14-dniowej kwarantannie i przechodził testy na obecność COVID-19 w organizmie.
Teraz Rublow może już wrócić do normalnego życia. Poinformował, że zakończył izolację, a testy, jakie przeszedł, dały wynik negatywny i uzyskał zgodę, by w tym tygodniu wystąpić w pokazowej imprezie Thiem's Seven w Kitzbuehel.



"Chcę podzielić się ważnymi informacjami" - napisał w oświadczeniu zamieszczonym na Twitterze Rublow. "Po ukończeniu 14-dniowej kwarantanny i trzech testach (wszystkich negatywnych) mój lekarz pozwolił mi na występ w Kitzbuehel".

Tenis. Roger Federer o inspiracji Michaelem Jordanem: Był dla mnie ikoną
Zanim doszło do decydującego spotkania, wyłoniono drugiego finalistę. W piątek pojedynek Andrieja Rublowa i Matteo Berrettiniego został przerwany przez deszcz w drugim secie. Po wznowieniu meczu w sobotę przełamań nie było, a Rosjanin okazał się lepszy w tie breaku. Dzięki temu wygrał ostatecznie 6:4, 7:6(6).
Po krótkiej przerwie na odpoczynek Rublow wyszedł na kort, aby zagrać o tytuł z Dominikiem Thiemem. Zaledwie kilka dni temu faworyzowany Austriak pokonał moskwianina w dwóch partiach w fazie grupowej. Ich sobotnie spotkanie miało jednak zupełnie inny przebieg.


Trzeci tenisista świata słabo wszedł w mecz i popełniał wiele błędów. W efekcie gładko przegrał pierwszego seta 2:6. W drugiej partii Rublow zdobył przełamanie i wyszedł na 4:3, lecz wówczas dała znać o sobie fatalna pogoda. Panowie na ponad godzinę opuścili kort z powodu opadów deszczu.

Po wznowieniu gry Thiem z trudem odrobił stratę breaka i objął prowadzenie. W 12. gemie jeszcze raz zaatakował przy serwisie Rosjanina i dzięki przełamaniu wyrównał stan rywalizacji. O zwycięstwie w zawodach zdecydował mistrzowski tie break. W nim Rublow odskoczył na 8-5, po czym wykorzystał trzeciego meczbola.

14. aktualnie tenisista w rankingu ATP wygrał ostatecznie 6:2, 5:7, 10-8 i dzięki temu triumfował w pokazowym turnieju Thiem's Seven. Za zwycięstwo otrzymał czek na 100 tys. euro. Faworyzowany Austriak nie sięgnął po trzecie trofeum w dobie pandemii COVID-19. Wcześniej był najlepszy w ramach imprezy Adria Tour w Belgradzie i Generali Austria Pro Series w Suedstadt pod Wiedniem.

Rublev's Umag Breakthrough: 'I Have No Words'

Andrey Rublev’s ATP Tour breakthrough almost ended before the main draw of the 2017 Plava Laguna Croatia Open Umag began. Hungarian Attila Balazs beat the 19-year-old in straight sets in the final round of qualifying.

But Borna Coric withdrew, Rublev entered the main draw as a lucky loser and he never looked back. The Russian beat fourth seed Paolo Lorenzi 6-4, 6-2 in the final for his first tour-level title.

“I have no words to explain it, especially after this tough week,” said Rublev. “Now I’m here and it’s amazing.”


It capped a dream week for the teen, who had defeated third seed and defending champion Fabio Fognini in the quarter-finals and home hope Ivan Dodig in the last four to reach his first ATP Tour final. Rublev was the seventh lucky loser to win a tour-level title and the first to do so since Rajeev Ram triumphed at 2009 Newport.

“I lost in the qualies, which should have been bad for me. Now I’ve won this tournament and everything is perfect,” Rublev said. “You can win one day and lose the next day. You can lose and you can win. The main thing for me is to do my best every day.”

Rublev tried to maintain the same routine throughout the week. He always sat in the front seat of the tournament transportation, for example.

“My coach was wearing the same t-shirt, my t-shirt, for the past three days. During the day, I would always go back to my hotel room. All these little things I was trying to do the same,” Rublev said. “The past three days were really tough mentally. I couldn’t sleep, I couldn’t talk normally. There was so much stress, it was really tough. I’m really happy that it’s over and I won the tournament.”


When Rublev was a kid, he watched the world’s best tennis players compete on television, battling for trophies. He wanted to be in that position.

“I’ve won my first ATP title and it’s amazing,” Rublev said. “Now it’s time to work and to try to do it again.”

The Russian didn’t let the big win change his mentality. He was excited to lift the trophy, but aware that there was plenty of work to do.

“I have no goals,” Rublev said. “I just want to do my best, to improve on the things I need to improve on and that’s it.”

Rublev was the No. 74 player in the FedEx ATP Rankings that week. Three years later, the Russian is World No. 14 and he owns four ATP Tour titles.

After Red-Hot Start, Rublev Puts Tough Period In Perspective

Russian reflects on time off during COVID-19 pandemic
Andrey Rublev started the 2020 season as hot as anyone on the ATP Tour, becoming the first player since 2004 to win back-to-back titles in the first two weeks of the season.

But the COVID-19 pandemic suspended play in March, putting a halt to the 22-year-old’s momentum. You would expect Rublev to be disappointed, but that’s not the case.

“I’m one of the people who can’t complain at all because I was living a normal life. It was not easy for millions of people because they were losing jobs,” Rublev said ahead of the Western & Southern Open. “Maybe they didn’t have enough money to live a [normal] life. For sure I’m not the one who can complain.”

Rublev considers himself lucky. During quarantine, when allowed, he was still able to keep busy by playing tennis and working on his game.

“I was practising tennis and that was the only thing that was disconnecting me from everything that was happening around the world,” Rublev said. “I was happy that I was able to play tennis to keep practising and that was helping me because otherwise I would be completely mentally destroyed. But for sure in my position I cannot even complain.”


The Russian believes that over the past five months he has dealt better with this situation than he would have a couple years ago. He says one of his biggest improvements has been the ability to accept situations, which proved key during the pandemic.

“If it happened maybe two, three years ago I would maybe be somewhere with a white face, without hair, completely broken,” Rublev said. “I learned how to accept [things]. Almost everything, not yet everything, but I’ve started to accept [things].

“I was playing really, really well [before the pandemic] but I could not do anything about this. Nobody expected this and no one wanted it to happen. I just had to accept it.”

It’s not the first time Rublev was out for an extended period. He suffered a lower back stress fracture in 2018, missing three months.

“If you compare the back injury, I was not accepting. I didn’t want to accept that it was happening to me. I was thinking this was something that I was just unlucky with, as soon as I will go on court I will show you that I will start to win," Rublev said. "But in the end, no, [my team told] me, ‘Relax, you need to improve many things first and then let’s see if you can win matches.’”

Rublev has proven himself plenty capable of that, climbing to a career-high No. 14 in the FedEx ATP Rankings this year. He began 2020 with two ATP Tour titles, quickly doubling that with victories in Doha and Adelaide. Former World No. 4 Brad Gilbert, who coached Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick, is impressed.

“He was playing really solid. He was 15-3. I like the way he was playing. He rips the ball,” Gilbert said. “I like the way he rocks the ball.”


The 2019 Western & Southern Open quarter-finalist isn’t just a talented ball-striker, though. He has the work ethic to back it up according to 23-year-old Alexander Bublik, who has competed against Rublev for a decade, dating back to their junior days.

“Of course he has better results,” Bublik said. “But [it is also] just his work ethic and just the willingness to work on a daily basis.”

“I was working a lot on my body in general, some muscles that I was never using, some exercises that I was never able to do mobility wise,” Rublev said of what he focussed on during quarantine. “For sure I improved in strength, in mobility. In tennis I don’t know because we haven’t competed for half a year. We’re going to see now, but for sure besides tennis, for sure I have improved fitness wise.”

As tennis returns this week at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, will Rublev be able to replicate the form that helped him start the year on such a high note?

“If I knew the secret I would use it also for these weeks. I was just happy. I was playing really well,” Rublev said. “I was just thinking match by match and I was winning match by match and I was playing better and better. These kind of things aren’t going to happen every year.”

Most importantly, Rublev is just excited to be competing again. He will play Daniel Evans in the first round.

“Finally we are back, finally we are here,” Rublev said. “I was missing this. You can’t imagine how much.”
