The ATP Tour season had plenty of thrilling storylines, from Novak Djokovic earning a record-tying sixth year-end No. 1 finish in the FedEx ATP Rankings to Andrey Rublev stepping into the spotlight.

It is no shock to see Djokovic atop the 2020 match wins leaderboard (41-5), but perhaps it is surprising to see Rublev right alongside him. The Russian had the best season of his career, tying Djokovic with 41 tour-level victories. The year-end World No. 8 went 19-2 at ATP 500s this year, claiming three of his ATP Tour-leading five titles at that level. Rublev began the season with two crowns at tour-level.

Rublev won as many hard-court titles (4) as Djokovic claimed on all surfaces this year (4). The Russian earned a Tour-leading 31 hard-court victories. Even so, Djokovic was once again ruthless on hard courts in 2020, winning three of his four titles on the surface. Three of the Serbian's hard-court losses came in his final two tournaments of the season (Vienna, London). The World No. 1's winning percentage on hard (88.2%) was more than eight points better than the next player on the list, Gael Monfils (16-4, 80%).

Dominic Thiem played 28 tie-breaks this year in 34 tour-level matches. Throughout the year, Thiem excelled against the best players in the world, earning an 8-4 record against the Top 10. This continues a trend for Thiem, who has played superbly against the world's best in recent years. In 2019 and 2020, he went a combined 9-3 against the Big Three (Djokovic, Federer, Nadal). This year, he went 1-1 against Djokovic and 2-0 against Nadal.

Top 2020 Milestone Moments

Three Top 10 Breakthroughs

Three players cracked the Top 10 of the FedEx ATP Rankings for the first time this year: Denis Shapovalov, Andrey Rublev and Diego Schwartzman.

Shapovalov became the 19th lefty to break into the Top 10 and only the fourth to do so this millennium, joining Nadal (25 April 2005), Fernando Verdasco (2 February 2009) and Jurgen Melzer (31 January 2011).

Rublev became the eighth Russian to crack the Top 10, and Schwartzman was the first Argentine to make his Top 10 debut since Juan Monaco on 23 July 2012.

Over the course of eight days, ATPTour.com is serving up a season snapshot of the eight players who qualified for the Nitto ATP Finals. The series is illustrated by intimate portraits shot by British photographer Simon Owen. Yesterday, we began the series with Diego Schwartzman. Today, we look at Andrey Rublev's season.

Memorable Moment
Andrey Rublev wasted no time making a splash this season. Rublev lifted trophies in the first two weeks of the season in Doha and Adelaide. He became the first player to triumph in the season’s first two weeks since Dominik Hrbaty in 2004. The righty did so impressively, winning 14 of his 16 sets at those events by a margin of 6-4 or greater.

Beginning with Hamburg, Rublev went on a stretch during which he won 19 of 20 matches and three of his five titles on the year, all at ATP 500 events. He saved perhaps his best performance during that period for last, upsetting Dominic Thiem on home soil in Vienna en route to the Erste Bank Open title.

The Road Ahead
In 2021, Rublev will try to live up to his own goals and maintain his place in the Top 10. Now that he is among the elite group, the Russian will attempt to make deeper runs at ATP Masters 1000s, where he has not yet reached a final. He will also try to chase 2020 Nitto ATP Finals champion Daniil Medvedev, the World No. 4, for the No. 1 Russian spot.

‘His victories mean nothing’ – Marat Safin not impressed with Andrey Rublev season

Andrey Rublev will need to do a lot more to impress compatriot Marat Safin after his titles this year were branded meaningless.

Rublev has won more titles than any other player on the ATP Tour in 2020 as he broke into the top ten for the first time in his career.

However, former US Open and Australian Open champion Safin says that until he can do it at a better level than an ATP500, Rublev still has everything to prove.

“Do his victories this year mean anything? If truth be told, it doesn’t mean anything,” Safin said.

“He won five tournaments, but these are not Masters, these are not Grand Slams. Novak [Djokovic] won less but finished first [in the world rankings].

“Andrey needs to switch and play in major tournaments. He can beat many, you need to go to the semi-finals and the Grand Slam finals to be in the top three.”

Safin, like Rublev, was a power baseline hitter in his pomp, but he believes it is a mental edge his compatriot needs to develop to get to the next level.

“He knows himself that he has let go,” Safin said. “He has a rich arsenal, good physics, light on his feet.

“Andrey needs to learn not to break down in stressful situations. In general, many people do not understand what professional sports are.

“The sport of elite achievement is not about learning to hit with different hands and go to play, but how long you can withstand a stressful situation.”

Trochę przesada. Raz, że nie każdy musi wygrywać szlemy, a dwa, że to pierwszy poważny sezon Rubleva. Bardziej martwiłbym się o zdrowie niż o progres. Owszem było kilka niepokojących sygnałów, przede wszystkim mecz z Nadalem na WTF, ale zdecydowanie dużo więcej było pozytywów. Jeżeli miałbym stawiać diagnozę to te niepowodzenia wynikają z tego, że za bardzo mu zależy i z braku obycia nie poziomie ćwierćfinału z szlema niż z jakieś słabości mentalnej.
Uwielbiam jego forehand i to czy zrobi progres i będzie się liczył na poziomie 1/4 szlema jest dla mnie drugorzędne. Zresztą przyzwoite Rafole i Danił wydają się w tym momencie poza zasięgiem, reszta jest do ogrania.

2020 ATP Awards Winners

Newcomer of the Year

Carlos Alcaraz: Spain’s Alcaraz finished 2019 at No. 491 in the FedEx ATP Rankings. In 2020, he moved 350 spots to close the season at No. 141 after reaching a career-high ranking of No. 136, winning a trio of ATP Challenger Tour titles to mark his rapid rise. The 17-year-old, who was the youngest of four teenagers in the year-end Top 200, claimed his first ATP main draw victory in emphatic fashion, outlasting No. 41 Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the first round of the Rio Open. Alcaraz made his Challenger breakthrough when he lifted the trophy in Trieste, but the best was yet to come as he arrived on home soil. The Spaniard lifted back-to-back Challenger trophies in Barcelona and Alicante – the latter sealed with his second Top 100 victory of the year in the final. As a result, Alcaraz added his name to an exclusive club of players who have won at least three Challenger titles before turning 18, joining Richard Gasquet, Novak Djokovic, Juan Martin del Potro and Felix Auger-Aliassime. Five other #NextGenATP stars – Sebastian Korda, Lorenzo Musetti, Jurij Rodionov, Emil Ruusuvuori and Thiago Seyboth Wild – were also nominated in this category.

“Andrey Has Made Me A Better Coach”: Vicente Named 2020 Coach Of The Year

Former Spanish player Fernando Vicente has been voted Coach of the Year in the 2020 ATP Awards after guiding 23-year-old Andrey Rublev to a career-best breakthrough season.

The Spaniard has been working with Rublev for four years, with a front-row view to the Russian’s highs and lows: from ‘the toughest moment’ following the player’s 2018 spinal stress fracture, to his comeback and meteoric rise in 2020. Their hard work was rewarded as Rublev tore through the competition this year, winning a Tour-leading five titles and lifting his FedEx ATP Ranking to a career-high No. 8.

And for Vicente, it felt like a double victory as Rublev was also recognised with the 2020 Most Improved Player of the Year award by his ATP peers.

“These awards, both mine and Andrey’s, are just a consequence of the years of hard work and countless hours dedicated to a sport that gives us so many emotions – for better or for worse,” Vicente said, speaking exclusively to ATPTour.com. “We’ve gone through some difficult times during these last almost five years together.

“Having the recognition from his peers is something that makes him feel so happy and appreciated. They also see Andrey day to day, how hard he works and tries each day to become a better player.”

The first Spanish coach to win Coach of the Year since the award’s inception in 2016, Vicente retired from professional tennis in 2011 after a career that took him as high as World No. 29. He also won three ATP Tour singles titles and two doubles crowns. His partnership with Rublev began in 2016 when the Russian arrived at the 4Slamtennis Academy, which Vicente co-founded with fellow players Galo Blanco and Jairo Velasco, near Barcelona.

"I would say Andrey has made me a better coach,” Vicente reflected. “I’ve learned and continue to learn a lot with him. I think that on my end, he understands what I’m trying to impart on him and there’s a very good personal connection, too. If not, it would be impossible to stay together so long.”


One of the qualities that Vicente highlights in his player is Rublev’s strong motivation and desire to continually improve as a player – something the Spaniard says makes his job “a pleasure”. It was this same quality that drove Rublev to new heights in 2020, despite the tough circumstances brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic and the Tour’s resulting five-month stoppage.

The result was five titles from five finals for Rublev – including his first three at the ATP 500-level – a breakthrough into the Top 10 of the FedEx ATP Rankings, and a debut at the Nitto ATP Finals. In addition to being the 23-year-old’s best season to date, it was also Vicente’s most successful year as a coach.

“At the end of the day, I’m the person who accompanies him and works in the best way possible to make sure that the dream he has and loves so much comes true in some way!” he said. “For me, it’s a pleasure to work with a player who is motivated all the time and works with such passion, always with the desire to keep improving.”

For Vicente, beyond the titles and accolades that Rublev achieved, the proudest moment of the season came away from the courts in the buildup to the Tour’s season-finale. Rublev was one of the last players to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals in a battle that came down to the wire, and the Spaniard applauded the way his player handled himself through those pressure-filled moments.

“What I’ve been most pleased to see was Andrey’s steady mentality during the weeks where our objective was to reach the Nitto ATP Finals. Those were weeks with so much tension, and he managed to compete at a very high level.

“Of course, I’m pleased with almost everything. It was his best year in terms of [FedEx ATP] Ranking, he won the five finals he played and in general his entire game improved a lot. I would give him an ‘outstanding’ on the season.”


With a rollercoaster 2020 season in the books and a new award to adorn his trophy cabinet, Vicente made it clear that he refuses to rest on their laurels in the season to come. That same desire for continuous improvement that makes Rublev such a force on the Tour was evident as Vicente outlined his vision for 2021: to keep rising to new heights.

"We’ve been through very tough moments and now we’ve had a great year. The key is to keep working with passion and the work will bear fruit. So we have to keep going and not be satisfied, there is a lot to improve if we want to stay at this level!"

Fernando Vicente was selected as ATP Coach of the Year by fellow coaches from a shortlist that included Gilles Cervara (Daniil Medvedev), Juan Ignacio Chela (Diego Schwartzman), Nicolas Massu (Dominic Thiem), and Riccardo Piatti (Jannik Sinner).

“I don’t want to forget to give thanks to all the coaches and players who have voted for us. I know that there are many players and coaches who work equally hard or harder than us, but well, in this case Andrey had a year to remember! I wish them all the best in the upcoming season.

Hard-Court Hero: Rublev's Foundation For Success

Andrey Rublev soared from No. 23 to No. 8 in the FedEx ATP Rankings on the back of five ATP Tour titles in 2020, when he was named by his peers as the ATP Most Improved Player of the Year.

His breakthrough was centred on his hard-court performances last year, with an ATP Tour-leading 31 match wins on the surface — better than World No. 1 Novak Djokovic (30), Nitto ATP Finals champion Daniil Medvedev (28) and US Open finalist Alexander Zverev (25).

According to the Infosys ATP Performance Zone, Rublev had the third-best winning percentage on hard-courts (79.5%) over the past 52 weeks, behind only Djokovic (88.2%) and Gael Monfils (80%).

Rublev opened the 2020 season with an 11-match winning streak on hard courts, including back-to-back ATP Tour titles in Doha (d. Moutet) and in Adelaide (d. Harris), making him the first player to win consecutive titles in the first two weeks of the season since Dominik Hrbaty in 2004. He compiled another 11-match winning streak on the surface in October with titles in St. Petersburg (d. Coric) and Vienna (d. Sonego).

It was quite the turnaround for Rublev, who saw his career winning percentage on hard courts skyrocket from the start of 2020 thanks to his 31-8 record (79.5%). Remarkably, the Russian compiled a 72-60 career record (54.5%) on the surface between 2014 and 2019.

With growing confidence, Rublev has captured five of his seven ATP Tour titles on hard courts, and since 2014 he has won four times as many matches on hard courts (103) than he has on clay courts (25). Last year, the 23-year-old went 10-2 on clay — including the Hamburg European Open title (d. Tsitsipas) — for an overall 41-10 season record (80.3%).

The World No. 8 has recorded 103 of his 132 career match wins on hard courts. Next month, he will begin his 2021 campaign alongside Daniil Medvedev, when they both represent Russia in the ATP Cup.
