Rogers Cup semi-finalist Karen Khachanov recovered from a set down to beat Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. The 22-year-old Russian will meet American Sam Querrey in the second round.
Mario pisze:Jeśli dzisiaj wygra, zapewni sobie rozstawienie w Nowym Jorku.
Querrey pokonany w nocy.

The first seeded-opponent Nadal could face, No. 27 seed Karen Khachanov, was impressive in dismissing 2017 Monte-Carlo runner-up Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-3, 6-2, 6-3. The Russian now leads the Spaniard 4-1 in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series after their first four meetings went to deciding sets.
Khachanov will next face Italian lucky loser Lorenzo Sonego, who came from two sets to one and a break down to beat Gilles Muller in the Luxembourg star's final match, 7-6(2), 6-7(9), 5-7, 7-6(6), 6-2 in four hours, 16 minutes.
Nadal’s next challenger, Karen Khachanov, dismissed Italian lucky loser Lorenzo Sonego 7-5, 6-3, 6-3 in two hours and six minutes earlier in the day. The Russian saved all four break points he faced and broke four times to move into the third round of the US Open for the first time.
Khachanov may be seeded 27th, but he has shown tennis that can challenge some of the top players in the game, blasting his way to the Rogers Cup semi-finals, where he lost to Nadal in a tight two-setter. The 22-year-old also lifted his second ATP World Tour trophy in Marseille, defeating two Top 20 opponents in the semi-finals and final to triumph.
"He’s a great opponent. He’s a great player. Young, strong, I played against him in Toronto three weeks ago. It was a tough one," Nadal said. "[I'm] excited to play that match and I hope it will be a good one. I need to play well to try to be through and that’s what I’m looking for."
No. 27 seed upbeat despite tough loss against Nadal
A loss is a loss. But if there’s any such thing as a moral victory, 22-year-old Karen Khachanov earned one on Friday at the US Open.
While the two-time ATP World Tour titlist was unable to advance to the fourth round, falling in four sets against World No. 1 and three-time champion Rafael Nadal, he showed the world that he is plenty capable of competing with the best players on the sport’s biggest stages.
“I gave everything what I had. I think everybody saw it. I'm proud of myself that I could play a good game today, fight till the end. Yeah, just a few points difference that it could go another way,” Khachanov said. “Big respect to Rafa. That's why he's No. 1 in the world, such a great fighter. Yeah, just happy about my performance. I hope to keep going that way.”

Based on the way the No. 27 seed played in Arthur Ashe Stadium, there should be little doubt in the direction he is moving: up. Khachanov qualified for last year’s inaugural Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan, and he reached the semi-finals at this month’s Rogers Cup, and the confidence he has gained from those experiences showed.
“I was mentally ready to play this match. Physically, I was ready. That's why at the end I played a match like that,” Khachanov said. “Of course, I had an early break [against me] in the fourth set, but still I was pushing, saying to myself, ‘C'mon, I can still break him, try to come back’.”
Nadal was plenty complimentary of his opponent as well. After all, he was the one chasing down all of Khachanov’s massive groundstrokes, especially off the forehand side. If anyone should be impressed, it would be Nadal, who had to raise his level just to get past this year’s Marseille champion.
“At some point I have to say congratulations to Karen, too, that he had a great attitude on court during the whole time, playing four hours 20, fighting all the time, playing aggressive, playing great tennis, having some mistakes at some important moments, too, but without saying not a bad word,” Nadal said. “That's a great thing for tennis, and that's a great thing for him. With that attitude, I am sure he will have a lot of success.”
And again, Khachanov lost the match. But while it’ll sting for now, this could be the moment he looks back on when he does make a major breakthrough as the performance that helped him believe in what he is truly capable of.
“Now, I'm not the happiest guy in the world. I lost the match. But, like I said, after some time, maybe one day, two days, I will think back and just watch the match. Of course, it will give me I think more experience, more confidence. To see which level I can play, which level I played here and the other Grand Slams or the other tournaments. That just shows that I'm really close to this high level against top guys,” Khachanov said. “Hopefully it will be soon on my side.”
Starty w szlemach 2018:
AO - R2
RG - R4
W - R4
US - R3
Dobry sezon.

“I have thought about the Race all year long,” said Thiem, who is currently in eighth position in the ATP Race To London. “Of course, I want to make it, as it’s the nicest tournament for players all year. I’d like to be in the Top 8.
“The US Open was great and I flew home with a great feeling, which I didn’t have the past two years. I am in good shape and I’m really looking forward to the tournament, the Asian swing, Vienna then the end of the season.
Moet and Chandon off-court news
Meanwhile, Khachanov, who will face former World No. 3 Stan Wawrinka in the second round on Wednesday, is happy to be playing in his home country.
“It feels great to be back in St. Petersburg, my home in Russia,” said Khachanov. “It’s nice to play in front of home crowds, even if I do feel extra nerves and pressure. I try to deal with it as motivation. I’m really happy to be at a career-high No. 24 and it shows my hard work has paid off, I’m progressing. We’re focused on the work we have to do.”
Elsewhere, Russian Karen Khachanov lost just four of his first-service points to beat Sam Querrey of the United States 6-4, 6-4 in 75 minutes. The Open 13 Provence champion (d. Pouille), now with a 34-19 match record on the season, will challenge top seed Juan Martin del Potro, a contender for a place at the Nitto ATP Finals, or Albert Ramos-Vinolas of Spain.
Chardy to face Djokovic in round two
Karen Khachanov, playing at a career-high No. 24 in the ATP Rankings, picked up his first win at the Rolex Shanghai Masters on Sunday, beating American Steve Johnson 6-7(6), 6-3, 6-4. The Russian hit 17 aces and saved all three break points faced in the final two sets.
Khachanov will next meet either 10th seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, who recently qualified for the Next Gen ATP Finals, or Frenchman Gael Monfils.

In other day one action at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event, German Peter Gojowczyk beat Jack Sock of the U.S. for the second time this season (Auckland) 6-4, 6-7(6), 6-3. The German will next face Bosnian Damir Dzumhur or Marton Fucsovics of Hungary.
Chile's Nicolas Jarry hit 18 aces and beat Mischa Zverev of Germany 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(5) to set a second-round meeting with fifth seed Marin Cilic, and Frenchman Jeremy Chardy swept German Maximilian Marterer 6-3, 7-6(5) and will next meet second seed Novak Djokovic.
22 and Rising: Fellow 22-year-old Moscow native Karen Khachanov is the No. 3 seed in Moscow after accepting a wild card. While Medvedev has 37 wins on the season, Khachanov is not far behind with 35. The former Russian No. 1 won the second title of his career at Marseille in February and advanced to his first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 quarter-final and semi-final at Toronto in August.

Gerasimov defeats Paire in straight sets
Karen Khachanov was forced to work hard for his opening win at the VTB Kremlin Cup on Wednesday, saving 12 of 13 break points en route to a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Lukas Rosol.
The third seed was regularly put under pressure by the Czech qualifier in front of his home crowd, but held his nerve in important moments to advance after 89 minutes. Khachanov, who reached the quarter-finals in Moscow on his debut in 2013, is searching for his second indoor hard-court title of the season after triumphing at the Open 13 Provence in February (d. Pouille).
The Russian wildcard improves to 36-21 at tour-level this season and will face Nick Kyrgios or Mirza Basic for a spot in the semi-finals. Khachanov has never met Kyrgios or Basic at a tour-level event.
Belarusian Egor Gerasimov reached his second tour-level quarter-final of the season, backing up his victory over defending champion Damir Dzumhur with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph against Benoit Paire. Gerasimov, who fired eight aces in the 72-minute clash, will meet top seed Marco Cecchinato or Adrian Mannarino in the last eight.
Ricardas Berankis saved five match points to return to the quarter-finals, beating Aljaz Bedene 3-6, 7-6(3), 7-6(5). Last year's runner-up needed two hours and 38 minutes to complete an unlikely comeback and will meet second seed Daniil Medvedev or Dusan Lajovic in the quarter-finals.
Pierre-Hugues Herbert also advanced, defeating qualifier Alexander Bublik 6-3, 6-4 in 70 minutes. The Shenzhen Open finalist will face Italian Andreas Seppi in the second round. Bublik was bidding to reach the last eight in Moscow for the third straight year.
