Karen Khachanov came through a battle of power hitters on Tuesday at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament, beating eighth seed and 2015 titlist Stan Wawrinka 6-4, 7-5 in one hour and 32 minutes.
Khachanov backed up his powerful groundstrokes by rushing the net (winning 10 of 11 points) to take time away from Wawrinka, who committed 30 unforced errors in their fourth ATP Head2Head meeting (now tied at 2-2).
"To play against Stan, especially in the first round, is always tough," said Khachanov. "I am really happy with the win, but there are always things you can improve upon. Mentally, I feel ready and I'm in good shape, so I hope to get some match wins."
How To Watch
In an tricky first-round encounter, Khachanov, who sits just one place behind Wawrinka at No. 21 in the FedEx ATP Rankings, broke serve in the third game of the 42-minute first set. Wawrinka hit a forehand wide at 5-5 in the second set, and Khachanov closed out with a deep forehand.
Khachanov, 24, now plays Briton Cameron Norrie for the first time in the Rotterdam second round. Last month, the Russian reached the Murray River Open semi-finals (l. to Sinner).

Third seed Karen Khachanov fought past a determined Mackenzie McDonald 7-6(4), 6-4 on Wednesday to reach his second quarter-final in as many weeks at the Open 13 Provence.
“It was a really difficult match, he won yesterday and he played already in these conditions,” Khachanov said. “I feel like I was ready and I played good, but matches [are] never easy. You need to adjust. He is so fast, you need to really build the point against him. It was a difficult match, a really competitive one and I’m happy I could go through and get this kind of intensity and rallies.”
The 2019 champion has been building up momentum after starting the season with a run to the Great Ocean Road Open semi-finals and recording a win over Stan Wawrinka on his way to the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament last week in Rotterdam.

Khachanov, who sits at No. 21 in the FedEx ATP Rankings, was in for a battle against the in-form American. McDonald held firm against the Russian’s firepower, and sent them into a tie-break. Khachanov narrowly edged through on a late mini-break, but was in trouble early in the second set as his big serve began to misfire.
McDonald finally broke through at 2-0 and again at 3-1, but Khachanov broke back each time to stay within touching distance. He was under pressure from the American until the end, shaking off break points in each of his service games as he took a 4-3 lead before sealing the victory in an hour and 54 minutes.
“At the end, this is what is so important, to stay mentally there,” Khachanov said. “I feel like I am doing that well and I want to continue that way.”

Khachanov will face Matthew Ebden in the next round. The Brit advanced with a comfortable 6-2, 6-2 victory over Emil Ruusuvori earlier in the day.

Khachanov is one of four Russian players to win the Rolex Paris Masters
Seven years ago, Karen Khachanov made his ATP Masters 1000 debut at the Miami Open presented by Itau when he was No. 453 in the FedEx ATP Rankings. The Russian returns this year to make his fifth appearance at the Florida event, where he will aim to improve on his 8-4 start to the 2021 ATP Tour season.
Ahead of the tournament, the 2018 Rolex Paris Masters champion spoke to ATPTour.com about his favourite Masters 1000 events and experiences.
Which ATP Masters 1000 host city is your favourite and why?
I would say there are two of them. Paris is a place where I won my Masters 1000 and I have said many times I love to play in France. The atmosphere and energy I get there is amazing and tough to express with words. You feel really pumped there. I would say the other one that I like so much is Madrid. The tournament and the city is really nice.
What is your favourite off-court memory or activity at a Masters 1000?
It depends on the place and the city where I am. In Madrid, Monte Carlo and Rome, you can have a nice walk, you can visit some places, museums and theatres. In general, just to have a walk with your wife or with the team [and] to have a relaxed afternoon is great.
What is the toughest match you’ve played at a Masters 1000?
It was in Paris against John Isner [in 2018]. It was in the third round to play [for a place in the] quarter-finals. I won 6-4, 6-7, 7-6. Both of us saved match points… Emotionally, it was one of the toughest matches of my breakthrough in that tournament.
What is the toughest aspect of playing at a Masters 1000?
The higher [the category of] tournament you are playing, maybe you want to do better. Expectations are higher [and] there is more pressure. I would say my approach is that every match counts. It doesn’t matter if you are playing an ATP 250, ATP 500, Grand Slam or Masters 1000. For me, it is one of the biggest events and obviously I try to do my best in every match.
What is your dream Masters 1000 match?
I would have liked to have played Marat [Safin] in Paris. He won there three times. It was his favourite place and mine too. It would have been a good scenario to have played against him.

Russians own 5-1 team record in Miami
Karen Khachanov and Andrey Rublev made a strong start to their Miami Open presented by Itau campaign on Thursday when they eliminated sixth seeds Wesley Koolhof and Lukasz Kubot 6-4, 6-2.
The unseeded pair saved seven of the eight break points they faced to record a 69-minute victory on Court 6. Khachanov and Rublev are chasing their maiden team title in Miami, following two runner-up finishes at ATP Masters 1000 tournaments. The Russians advanced to the championship match at this event in 2018 (l. to Bryan/Bryan) and also reached the 2019 Rolex Paris Masters final (l. to Herbert/Mahut).
How To Watch
Last year’s Rolex Paris Masters champions Felix Auger-Aliassime and Hubert Hurkacz opened their Miami title bid with a 6-4, 6-3 win against Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen. The Canadian-Polish pair will face fourth seeds Ivan Dodig and Filip Polasek or Jeremy Chardy and Fabrice Martin for a quarter-final spot.
Tim Puetz and Alexander Zverev also eliminated seeded opposition on Thursday. The Germans converted four of their seven break points to beat third seeds Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos 6-2, 6-4.
Taylor Fritz and John Isner marked their team debut with a 7-5, 6-3 win against Alexander Bublik and Adrian Mannarino. The Americans will meet second seeds Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic or countrymen Steve Johnson and Sam Querrey in the second round.

The 19-year-old's next opponent, Khachanov, also looked dominant in a 6-3, 6-2 victory against German Yannick Hanfmann, setting a big-hitting shodwon in the third round. Both of Khachanov and Sinner's previous meetings, which have come in the past six months, have gone to a final-set tie-break. The Russian triumphed in five bruising sets at last year's US Open, and Sinner got his revenge earlier this year at the Great Ocean Road Open.
How To Watch
Khachanov began the day with a 1-4 record in Miami, but he looked plenty confident against the World No. 108. The Russian earned five service breaks in his 71-minute triumph.
The 24-year-old has enjoyed success at ATP Masters 1000 events before. Khachanov won the biggest title of his career at the 2018 Rolex Paris Masters.
