Tomic Beats Fish...

World No. 49 Bernard Tomic, who is 10 days from his 19th birthday, recorded his second Top 10 win on Wednesday when he beat No. 9-ranked Mardy Fish 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 in just under two hours at the Shanghai Rolex Masters.

Fish, who beat Tomic in the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships quarter-finals just four days ago, had been hoping to add valuable points in the battle to qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament. Fish is currently No. 6 in the South African Airways 2011 ATP Year-To-Date Rankings on 2,875 points.

Tomic beat No. 5-ranked Robin Soderling at Wimbledon this year. The Australian won 72 per cent of his service points and converted three of his eight break point opportunities.

"It's been a good year," said Tomic. "I can't expect much more from myself. I've had a good six months. I'm playing well here. The surface, conditions suit me. I think it's been a good run. I've got to play well now in the third round. I think I've got a lot more to improve in the next few years. I don't think I should set targets because when you set goals, things change, things happen. I think you've just got to play tennis, have fun, not have a lot of pressure. In the juniors, everything was under a lot of stress and you'd play. But if you have fun, good things happen."

Bernard Tomic is already confirmed in the Brisbane men's draw.

The Gold Coast teenager, who has broken into the world's top 50 and is Australia's highest-ranked man at No.49, has never progressed beyond the first round.

He secured wildcards in the first three years of the Brisbane event.

But Tomic earned his place for next year off his ranking alone after a stellar year in which he reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals, losing to eventual champion Novak Djokovic.

Australian Bernard Tomic receives wildcard into Stockholm

Obrazek

18-year-old Australian Bernard Tomic replaced Argentinian David Nalbandian as a wildcard holder at the If Stockholm Open starting on Monday. The former world number three Nalbandian didn’t require a wildcard when Robin Soderling pulled out due to illness. The Argentines ranking helped him to gain a spot in the main draw.

Bernard Tomic is one of the young and upcoming bright stars on the ATP Tour. He is yet to win a career title but the first title will probably happen in the next six months.

The World No. 49 had an amazing run at this year’s Wimbledon when he qualified and reached the quarterfinals. Along the way Tomic defeated Nikolay Davydenko, Igor Andreev, Robin Soderling and Xavier Malisse before losing to Novak Djokovic.

This week at the Shanghai Rolex Masters Tomic defeated World No. 8 Mardy Fish in the second round in three sets before losing to Alexandr Dolgopolov.

Tournament Director Thomas Johansson said, “Bernard is one of the young players who has popped up this year. It feels great to be able to give one of our wildcards to one of the most promising young player on ATP Tour.”

IF STOCKHOLM OPEN 2011

Bernard Tomic finished strongly to set a second-round
clash with top seed Gael Monfils.

World No. 44 Bernard Tomic survived a scare in his first-round match at the If Stockholm Open on Wednesday, dropping the second set to Estonian qualifier Jurgen Zopp before finishing strongly to prevail 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-0 in one hour and 48 minutes.

The Australian, who celebrates his 19th birthday on Friday, is at a career-high in the South African Airways ATP Rankings this week after defeating World No. 9 Mardy Fish en route to the third round (l. to Dolgopolov) of the Shanghai Rolex Masters last week. Also a quarter-finalist (l. to Djokovic) at Wimbledon in June, Tomic improved to a 16-14 match record on the season. He goes on to meet top-seeded Frenchman Gael Monfils.

Bernard celuje w Top-20 w 2012.
Bernard Tomic targets top 20 ranking in 2012

Obrazek

Bernard Tomic wants to reach the top 20 next year. Picture: Michael Klein Herald Sun

RISING tennis star Bernard Tomic is targeting a top 20 ranking next year and is hoping the addition of a serve-and-volley game will help him get there.

Tomic, 19, has slashed his ranking from 208 at the start of this year to a career-high mark of 41.

Along the way, the towering 193cm Gold Coast teenager became the youngest man to make the Wimbledon quarter-finals in 25 years and ended Lleyton Hewitt's long reign as Australia's top-ranked player.

"It's (been) a good year for me and, hopefully, I can have a good year next year and get stronger and improve and that's what I'm really aiming for," Tomic said at the Lleyton Hewitt Charity Day in Sydney.

"I'd love to play well. I think if I have a good year, I can make the top 20, that's my goal.

"As long as I stay healthy and have a good injury-free year, that's the important part."

Already with one of the most diverse games on tour, mixing slice and flat balls with an ability to pull the trigger when required, Tomic has not been so well known for rushing the net and his movement around the court.

But he says he'll be looking to step things up in both departments in 2012.

"Definitely serve and volley, I need to improve that so that I can come in and win a lot of points at the net, and to improve my speed," Tomic said.

Tomic confirmed his father John would remain his head coach.

While there has been conjecture about who could get the most out of the Gold Coast native, Australian tennis legend John Newcombe said it was pleasing Tomic senior had embraced the Davis Cup vibe and the captain Pat Rafter and coach Tony Roche.

"It appears that John (Tomic) has bought into the Davis Cup thing and realises how much Pat and Tony have to offer Bernard," Newcombe said.

"Hopefully, it will be a really good year for Bernard next year because he needs to make his move now.

"It's there for him, if the hard work is put in, to be in the top 20 this time next year."

Rafter felt a little more dedication and intensity would help Tomic, but was wary of tampering with his easy-going approach.

"I thought top 50 was a good result for him this year. I was really happy with him reaching that," Rafter said.

"He can be certainly a top 20 player but that requires a lot of hard work and dedication, and it has to come from within.

"He's a very interesting player, because he's very different and you've got to be a bit careful with him because he's very unique and something that I really haven't see a lot of before, so you've got to let him play his game and his mentality reflects his game as well.

"He's very casual and very relaxed but that allows him to play casual shots which are very baffling for the other player."

Tomic zajmuje obecnie 42. miejsce w rankingu ATP World Tour.

“I would love to be in the top 10 by my next birthday,” said Australian Bernard Tomic when asked about his 2012 goals. I did not think I would be where I am - anything is possible. I have a lot of tournaments where I can get points in the next six months.”

Tomic had a great boost in confidence after reaching the quarter-finals of Wimbledon this year. Tomic reached the quarter-finals as qualifier and was a low World No. 158 then, but broke into the Top 50 for the first time by the end of the year.

Tomic also expressed that he is under no pressure to perform as Australia is desperate for a tennis star after they experienced Lleyton Hewitt's downfall. Tomic also felt inspired to do well at the Grand Slam level and also at the Olympics after fellow Australian Samantha Stosur won the US Open this year.

Stosur motivates us a lot. I look at it and say I want to win a grand slam like her. That will always be with her that itle, and maybe in the future I can win tournaments like that. The Olympics will be my focus as well next year. It is a true event, one that I want to win a medal at. There is a little bit more pressure on me, but I have always had pressure from a young age - I know how to handle it.”

Tomic recently made headlines after being investigated by Gold Coast police for complaints of hooning in his sports car. “I don't worry about that stuff. It is in the past. You are going to get good press and bad press ... but I am doing my job playing tennis,” Tomic said when asked about this incident.

Its nice to see teenagers like Tomic doing well and cracking the Top 50, will this youngster be the “next big thing” in tennis or not ? Only time will tell!

Bernard Tomic bulks up to raise hopes of becoming tennis powerhouse

A FITTER than ever Bernard Tomic has emerged from the off-season looking more like the powerhouse Tennis Australia so desperately needs.

With his breakthrough season still fresh in the memory banks, the 19-year-old hit the practice court yesterday at Queensland Tennis Centre carrying more muscle on his previously slender frame than ever before.

Gone are the long scarecrow arms of his mid-teens, replaced by a pair of cannons that could be the missing link that propels him towards his dream of spearing into the world's top 10 next year.

The Gold Coaster, a quarter-finalist at Wimbledon this year, spent an hour hitting with former Australian Open finalist Marcos Baghdatis on Pat Rafter Arena ahead of his 2012 season opener at the Brisbane International.

Tomic has worked hard on his serve, which was once a major chink in his armour.

Baghdatis was impressed by what he saw from the youngster, now ranked No.42. Tomic was watched closely by his father and coach, John, who did not have any coaching assistance yesterday.

Scotland's Andy Murray arrived in Australia yesterday wary of Tomic.

He is the Brisbane tournament's top seed but praised the unseeded hometown hope who could be a dangerous threat in the early rounds.

"Bernard's good, a very unorthodox player, very different to what a lot of the guys play now," the world No.4 said. "That helps when guys aren't used to your style."

Tomic qualified for Wimbledon as the world No.158 but had rocketed into the top 50 for the first time by the end of the year.

This is his first automatic entry into the main draw for Brisbane. He will also play the AAMI Classic at Kooyong before another shot at the Autralian Open.

Tennis great Rod Laver urges Bernard Tomic to try harder

IN THE words of Rod Laver, sometimes you hear disturbing things about Bernard Tomic's tennis.

But you also hear some brilliant things, including plaudits from the sport's biggest names.

Just how the rising Queensland star plays it on and off the court in the coming year or two will be crucial to his career.

During a recent visit to Brisbane for the Queensland Sports Awards, Laver urged Tomic to raise his level in training and matches.

"Sometimes you hear of disturbing things, his game, maybe it looks like he's not caring enough about his game, and sometimes you're flat, that happens," Laver said.

"He's got to bring himself through that level and train himself to work all the time as hard as you can.

"He's a great player now. But he's got to be a champion, he's got to win tournaments."

Fellow Queensland Sport Hall of Fame legend Roy Emerson has tipped Tomic to win the Australian Open as early as 2013.

"For the amount of experience he's had I think he's doing great," Emerson said.

"He has the ability to do well against the top players, which is good to know.

"The difficult ones for him to win at the moment are when he's expected to beat somebody, it puts a bit more pressure on him."

"He'll overcome that when he gets a little bit older."

If Tomic is to achieve his goals of breaking into the world's top 10 from No.42 and representing Australia at the Olympics before he turns 20 in October, he must take the next step.

This week he was making the right noises, heeding the advice of his elders.

"They know their stuff and to get advice from great sportsmen like that is a good thing and you learn from that. That's how you improve," he said.

Tomic was also keen to put a run-in with police over complaints about him allegedly hooning around the Gold Coast in his sports car behind him.

"It was one of those things," he said. "There will be many more things like that through a career like mine."

Tomic says he has no intention of emulating Mark Philippoussis, whose love of fast cars and famous women was well documented in the media.

Earlier this year, John McEnroe branded Tomic the potential saviour of Australian men's tennis if he could handle the pressure.

Tomic knows all eyes will be on him in January after a standout year.

"Hopefully it can turn out to be a really good summer for me," he said.
