Awaiting Garin in the semi-finals is third-seeded Italian Marco Cecchinato, who saved one match point in a 1-6, 7-5, 7-5 comeback win over eighth seed Marton Fucsovics of Hungary. Cecchinato won his lone FedEx ATP Head2Head meeting with Garin this February at the Argentina Open en route to winning the title (d. Schwartzman).

Fucsovics led by a set and 40/0 in the first game of the second set when rain interrupted play. Upon the resumption, he held a match point at 5-4, with Cecchinato serving at 30/40 prior to being broken in the 11th game of the set. Cecchinato saved 15 of 19 break points and broke decisively in the 11th game of the decider.

After a breakthrough 2018 season, Marco Cecchinato lifted his third ATP Tour trophy at the Argentina Open in February. The 26-year-old, who rose to a career-high No. 16 in the ATP Rankings on 25 February, will meet Alex de Minaur for the second straight year in the first round at Wimbledon. Marco Cecchinato wciąż nie może nawiązać do formy z 2018 i pierwszych miesięcy 2019 roku, kiedy to sensacyjnie dotarł do półfinału Rolanda Garrosa, wygrał turnieje w Budapeszcie, Umagu i Buenos Aires oraz awansował na 16. miejsce w rankingu ATP. Obecnie jest dopiero 113. singlistą świata, a w tym sezonie wygrał zaledwie jeden z ośmiu rozegranych meczów w głównym cyklu.

Flashback: How Lucky Loser Cecchinato Became Budapest Champion

Relive the Italian's dream run in Hungary
Italian Marco Cecchinato lost in the final round of qualifying in straight sets at the 2018 Hungarian Open. Yet seven days later, then World No. 92, he left Hungary as a first-time ATP Tour champion.

After gaining entry to the main draw in Budapest as a lucky loser, Cecchinato never looked back. And even though he had never reached a tour-level semi-final prior to that event, the Italian defeated Aussie John Millman, another first-time finalist, 7-5, 6-4 to claim his maiden trophy.

”It is amazing because the first title in my career is not possible to forget in my life,” Cecchinato said. “I am very happy because I lost last Sunday [in qualifying] and now I won the tournament. It is incredible. It is amazing. I don't know, maybe it is a dream.”


Cecchinato rallied from a set down in both the quarter-finals and semi-finals against powerful German Jan-Lennard Struff and savvy Italian veteran Andreas Seppi, respectively. But despite winning only six games in the final round of qualifying against Jurgen Zopp, Cecchinato dug deep to earn what was the biggest result of his career.

”Every match was tough. Today I was tired, because five matches in the main draw, plus two in qualifying,” Cecchinato said after the championship match. “But the final is the final, it is one match and after [you get to] rest.”

Cecchinato accomplished his biggest goal in 2015, when he cracked the Top 100 of the FedEx ATP Rankings for the first time. But he never imagined what he would accomplish in Budapest.

”My dream was to be in the Top 100 of the ATP Rankings,” Cecchinato said. “Never [did] I think I would win an ATP Tour title.”

Later that clay-court season, Cecchinato made an even bigger splash. He defeated then-World No. 11 Pablo Carreno Busta, 2017 Nitto ATP Finals runner-up David Goffin and current World No. 1 Novak Djokovic en route to the Roland Garros semi-finals.

Cecchinato had lost in the first round of his first four Grand Slam main draws. But in Paris, the Italian carried the momentum he had earned earlier during the clay season, especially from his run in Budapest.

“I think I started two months ago, not [just] the past two weeks, because I also won Budapest,” Cecchinato said after losing in the semi-finals against Dominic Thiem. “Every week I’ve played very, very well... and I want to continue like this.”

Novak Djokovic and Marco Cecchinato entered the 2018 Roland Garros quarter-finals on completely different ends of the experience spectrum. But that didn’t stop the surprise Italian from springing a memorable upset on the Parisian clay.

Cecchinato, the No. 72 player in the FedEx ATP Rankings, arrived in France without a Grand Slam main draw win. The 25-year-old had tried to qualify for the clay-court major three times, failing on each occasion. Djokovic, however, won the 2016 Roland Garros title and was competing in his ninth straight quarter-final at the tournament.

“This is the best moment of my life,” Cecchinato said after beating David Goffin in the fourth round. “Maybe it’s a dream.”

Cecchinato admitted that before playing the biggest match of his life he had nothing to lose. On the other hand, there was plenty of pressure on Djokovic.

The Serbian underwent right elbow surgery after the 2018 Australian Open, and he lost eight of 15 matches leading into Roland Garros. That made Djokovic hungry for a big result, and drawing Cecchinato in the quarter-finals seemed a good opportunity for the World No. 22 to reach the last four.

But Cecchinato stunned the former champion 6-3, 7-6(4), 1-6, 7-6(11) to continue his dream run.

“I think it's changed [my] life,” Cecchinato said of his efforts on the terre battue.

Cecchinato and Djokovic were familiar with each other from practising together in Monte Carlo. But while the Serbian was playing in his 40th Grand Slam quarter-final, Cecchinato was experiencing the pressure of the moment for the first time.

“He didn't seem to be under the impression of the big stadium or big match,” Djokovic said. “He just held his nerves amazingly well in the important moments.”

Cecchinato, who had won his first ATP Tour title a month earlier in Budapest, appeared the more comfortable player as he earned a two-set lead. But Djokovic, still working himself into form, found rhythm and breezed through the third set and earned an early break in the fourth.


The stage was set for Djokovic to complete a tremendous comeback to show the world that he was “back”. Instead, Cecchinato saved three set points in the ensuing tie-break with great defence before hitting a backhand winner to clinch the biggest win of his career.

“We shared a moment after my victory. Novak is a very good person and is unbelievable,” Cecchinato said of the pair’s nice post-match embrace. “He told me, ‘Congrats, man, and it’s unbelievable for you, and good luck.’ It’s a dream for me.”

Cecchinato kept his semi-final against Dominic Thiem tight in the first two sets, but succumbed in three. For Djokovic, however, the loss served as a wake-up call, as he reached the final of the Fever-Tree Championships and then won Wimbledon.

“It's never been hard for me to congratulate and hug an opponent that we just shared a great moment on the court. And the one that won deserved to win the match, and that was Marco today,” Djokovic said. “On the other hand, when you walk off the court, of course, it's a hard one to swallow.”

Cecchinato Wins Battle Of Former Semi-finalists At Roland Garros

Chung through in straight sets

In a meeting of former Roland Garros semi-finalists, Marco Cecchinato booked his place in the second qualifying round with a 6-3, 7-5 victory against Ernests Gulbis on Tuesday.

The fifth seed struck 20 winners to move past 2014 semi-finalist Gulbis in one hour and 43 minutes. Just two years ago, Cecchinato beat Pablo Carreno Busta and David Goffin in back-to-back matches to book a quarter-final meeting against Novak Djokovic at the clay-court Grand Slam championship. Appearing in his maiden Grand Slam quarter-final, the Italian stunned Djokovic in a three-hour, 26-minute battle to reach the semi-finals in Paris.

Cecchinato will next face Constant Lestienne of France. The 28-year-old raced through his opening match in 61 minutes, beating Andrew Harris 6-1, 6-1.

South Korea's Hyeon Chung rallied from a 1/4 deficit in a first-set tie-break to defeat wild card Baptiste Crepatte 7-6(7), 6-4. The 2017 Next Gen ATP Finals champion will face Renzo Olivo of Argentina for a place in the final qualifying round. Olivo won 12 of 15 net points to eliminate 20th seed Federico Gaio 6-4, 6-4.

Eighth seed Taro Daniel also advanced on Tuesday with a 6-4, 6-4 win against Mathias Bourgue. The Japanese will face Andrey Kuznetsov, who overcame Blaz Kavcic 4-6, 7-6(8), 6-3, in his next match.

Frederico Ferreira Silva charged past Viktor Troicki 6-0, 6-2 on Court 11. The 25-year-old Portuguese broke serve on six occasions to book a meeting with Joao Menezes. The Brazilian moved past Mohamed Safwat 7-6(2), 6-1.

Leonardo Mayer landed 29 winners to defeat Peter Polansky 7-5, 6-0. The Argentine, a two-time winner at the Hamburg European Open, will play Carlos Taberner of Spain in his next match. Taberner, who won his maiden ATP Challenger Tour title in Iasi last week, beat Stefano Napolitano 6-4, 7-5.

Lorenzo Sonego regrouped after a second-set comeback from fellow Italian Giulio Zeppieri on Tuesday for a place in the Forte Village Sardegna Open second round. Fifth seed Sonego, who won 82 per cent of his first-service points, earned a 6-2, 7-6(4) victory over the 18-year-old wild card in one hour and 40 minutes.

Last week, Sonego reached the Roland Garros fourth round (l. to Schwartzman), having beaten Taylor Fritz 7-6(5), 6-3, 7-6(17) — the longest tie-break in the Grand Slam championship’s history. The 25-year-old, who is competing in Sardinia at a career-high No. 42 in the FedEx ATP Rankings, will now challenge Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic.

Elsewhere, Marco Cecchinato lived to fight another day, saving one match point at 6/7 in the second-set tie-break of a 5-7, 7-6(7), 6-2 win over Italian compatriot Gianluca Mager in two hours and 33 minutes. Cecchinato will now meet American Tommy Paul.

Earlier in the day, sixth-seeded Spaniard Pablo Andujar saved two set points in the first set and recovered from 1-3 down in the second set to overcome qualifier Jozef Kovalik of Slovakia 7-5, 7-5 in two hours and three minutes. Andujar saved two set points when Kovalik served at 5-4, 40/30 and Ad-In in the first set.

The 35-year-old Andujar, a winner of four ATP Tour titles from nine clay-court finals, will next face Federico Delbonis, who was solid on serve to edge past Andreas Seppi of Italy 7-5, 7-6(6) in one hour and 57 minutes. Delbonis and Seppi met only last week at the Internazionali di Tennis Emilia Romagna in Parma, with the Argentine winning 6-1, 7-6(6).

Roberto Carballes Baena, who beat Denis Shapovalov 8-6 in the fifth set of their Roland Garros second-round match two weeks ago, came through a match of 10 service breaks mid-afternoon, 7-5, 6-4, over Argentine qualifier Federico Coria in just under two hours. The Spaniard now prepares to meet top seed Fabio Fognini.
