Borna Coric set a quarter-final clash with childhood idol Rafael Nadal at the Swiss Indoors Basel as he defeated Andrey Golubev 6-4, 6-4 on Thursday at the ATP World Tour 500 tournament.

The 17-year-old Croatian backed up his upset win over sixth seed Ernests Gulbis from the first round, claiming the sixth tour-level win of his career as he converted three of his four break points and won 72 per cent of his service points.

"I played very well in both matches,” said Coric. “I'm very happy with my game. I wasn't getting nervous. It really feels good and it's going to help me with my ranking. It's a huge step for me.

"I think it's going to be a great match [against Nadal]. He's an unbelievable tennis player. It's a privilege to play against him. I hope I can play as best as I can and we'll see what happens.”

The right-hander reached his first ATP World Tour quarter-final on home soil in July, when he lost to Fabio Fognini in the last eight in Umag. He went on to win his first ATP Challenger Tour title in Izmir, Turkey, last month (d. Jaziri). Since the start of the season, he has jumped 177 places to World No. 124 in the Emirates ATP Rankings.

Borna Coric upsets Rafael Nadal to reach his first ATP semi-final

Croatian teenager Borna Coric achieved the biggest win of his career, taking advantage of a rare, off day from Rafael Nadal in their Swiss Indoors Basel quarter-final on Friday. The World No. 3, playing his first tournament since being diagnosed with appendicitis in Shanghai, was unable to fend off the 17 year old, who won 6-2, 7-6(4).

“It’s unbelievable for me,” said the young Croat after the win. “I just want to enjoy the moment. I’m just so surprised and it’s an unbelievable feeling.”

In the first set of their first meeting, Coric imposed himself early on the veteran Spaniard, breaking him three times and winning his own service games to take a 5-0 lead. Nadal was able to get on the board as he broke back while Coric served for the set but a hold later, Coric was serving for the set again at 5-2. Despite Nadal saving two set points, 19 total unforced errors proved detrimental as the first set went to the young Croat in 34 minutes.

A tighter second set saw Nadal find his way back into the match as the pair went to a tie-break. One match point was all it took as Coric sealed the match and a spot in his first ATP semi-final.

“[It’s] nothing frustrating for me to lose here,” said Nadal, coming to terms with the result. “I [knew] it was going to happen. I was ready for that. I accept [that] and I know [that] I have to be better for the beginning of 2015, and the only way to be better is work and health. Without health, you cannot work.”

Six aces and 17 winners by the No. 124-ranked Croat, who first broke the Top 200 at No. 194 on 28 July, helped him in his win over Nadal, who had 37 total unforced errors in the match.

“Believe me, I’m a very nervous person. I [was] just trying to keep it inside of me,” said Coric. “I didn’t have anything to lose. Because I never played against him, I wasn’t sure what I was going to get - is he going to kill me or what? - so I was under pressure.”

“I don’t know how far he can go,” said Nadal about the potential of his opponent. “He’s a good guy, good player, young. It depends on how he’s able to improve.”

The Croatian wild card will face No. 7 seed David Goffin in their semi-final on Saturday, who upset London finale contender Milos Raonic.

Despite being denied a first title in Basel, Nadal has already qualified for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, along with Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Stan Wawrinka and Marin Cilic.
