Borna Coric, the No. 15 seed, knuckled down to beat Hungarian qualifier Marton Fucsovics for the third time on Monday at the Rolex Paris Masters.

The Croatian produced a quality serving performance to win 7-6(5), 6-1 in one hour and 46 minutes for a place in the second round where he’ll meet Australian Jordan Thompson or Federico Delbonis of Argentina. Coric won 35 of his 48 first-service points.

"It was not an easy match and every time we have played it's been very tough,” said Coric, in a post-match interview. "It's always been a very physical match. In the tie-break, I went for my shots that maybe weren't logical, but it paid off. In the second set, I started to play much better and played at quite a high level at the end. I played one bad game at 2-1 in the first set, when I missed two first serves, but pretty much the rest of the time I was serving huge. I feel like I'm starting to play some good tennis."

After an early exchange of service breaks, Fucsovics locked in and led 3/0 in the tie-break before a concentration lapse let Coric back into their third ATP Head2Head meeting. Fucsovics hit a backhand long to end the 62-minute opener, then Coric raced to a 3-0 lead in the second set en route to his 16th match win of the 2020 season.
World No. 24 Coric recently reached the St. Petersburg Open final (l. to Rublev) for the second straight year. Fucsovics drops to a 14-10 match record in 2020.

Borna Coric has a tattoo that says, “There is nothing worse than being ordinary”. Perhaps that ethos kept him from giving up while down two sets to one and 1-5 in the fourth set of his third round match against Stefanos Tsitispas at the US Open this year. Coric, then No. 32 in the FedEx ATP Rankings, knew he’d need to be extraordinary to upset the tournament’s fourth seed and indeed he was just that.

Though they’re both from Mediterranean countries, are close in age and have younger sisters they adore, the men are a study in contrasts: Coric wears his hair cut short and plays from the baseline; Tstsipas has the long curly locks and comes to net. The Croat burst into the Top 15 in 2018, but seemed to lose a step late in 2019 and into 2020. In his last major appearance prior to the Tsitsipas match, he lost in the first round at the Australian Open. And so, he was in need of a career-pivoting win against a player who, though two years younger, had overtaken him in the rankings.

Up two sets to one and 5-1 in the fourth, it seemed certain to be another disappointing tournament for Coric, until he held and broke back to narrow the gap. Tsitsipas’ game was slipping but he still had three match points at 5-4, 40-0. But he squandered each of them, and the then 23-year-old Croat stormed back, winning six consecutive games to take the fourth set 7-5.

Despite the fourth set collapse, Tsitsipas admirably recovered, playing well in the fifth set to send the match to a decisive tie-break. Stefanos hit just one double fault across 29 service games, but then served up two in the final tie-break. The hiccups gave Coric a 6/3 lead, which he cashed in on his second match point, giving him a remarkable 6-7(2), 6-4, 4-6, 7-5, 7-6(4) comeback win in four hours, and 36 riveting minutes that amounted to a Greek tragedy for Tsitsipas.

"I have to be honest and say that I was really lucky,” said Coric, who subsequently beat Jordan Thompson in the next round before falling to Alexander Zverev in the quarter-finals. “I made some unbelievable returns and I was a little bit lucky at the end. In the third and fourth set, he was playing unbelievable tennis and I felt like I had no chance. In the fifth-set tie-break, I knew it was not going to be easy for him, so I tried to just keep the ball in court and make him play as many balls as possible."

The win would indeed be a season changer for Coric, who finished the season at No. 24 in the FedEx ATP Rankings largely on the strength of his quarter-final showing and a subsequent run to the final at the St. Petersburg Open, where he beat Reilly Opelka and Milos Raonic before falling to Andrey Rublev.

Wawrinka Battles From The Brink, Coric Out-Serves Kyrgios At Murray River Open

Frenchman Chardy upsets sixth seed Fritz
Stan Wawrinka rallied from the brink of defeat on Friday to reach the quarter-finals of the Murray River Open. The top seed relied on all his experience to battle past home favourite Alex Bolt 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(5) after two hours and 23 minutes.

Bolt, who once quit tennis and spent time working in construction before resurrecting his career, played aggressive tennis, especially with his laser-like forehand, to take the action to one of the most powerful baseliners on the ATP Tour. But the former World No. 3 remained calm when the Aussie served for the match at 5-4 in the third set to keep his hopes alive.

Wawrinka cracked a massive forehand winner down the line to get back on serve. But Bolt never went away, battling into a tie-break. The powerful lefty, who made the third round of the Australian Open in 2019, recovered an early mini-break in the tie-break. But the World No. 174 hooked a critical crosscourt forehand wide at 5/5 to put the Swiss in a winning position. Wawrinka fired a forehand passing shot down the line on match point to seal his victory, shouting "Allez!" to celebrate.

The 16-time tour-level titlist will next play Frenchman Jeremy Chardy, who defeated sixth seed Taylor Fritz 6-2, 6-4 in 67 minutes. Wawrinka has won his seven previous ATP Head2Head meetings against Chardy.

"The conditions were so tough for me. I was struggling to find any rhythm. I served bad. I don't expect anything less from him," Kyrgios said of Coric. "He's a great player. That's why he's an unbelievable player, he brings that consistency every day."

All third-round winners are scheduled to play their quarter-final later in the day on Friday, but heavy rain could force a late finish to get all the matches in.

Coric Undergoes Shoulder Surgery In New York

The Croatian last competed in Rotterdam
Borna Coric announced on Instagram Wednesday that he underwent surgery on his right shoulder on Tuesday.

“I have been dealing with shoulder pain for some time now and despite trying a whole range of recovery techniques, it was clear a more permanent solution was needed,” Coric wrote. “After talking to leading doctors together with my team, I decided the best option was to have surgery.”


Coric had the surgery at the Hospital For Special Surgery’s Sports Medicine Institute in New York.

“The operation went extremely well, I am very thankful to the HSS Sports Medicine Institute team and especially doctor David Altchek,” Coric wrote. “Now it is time to recover and work hard to be back on court soon . Thank you for all the support as always.”

The former World No. 12 last competed in Rotterdam this March. Coric also played the Murray River Open and the Australian Open this year, tallying a 6-3 record in those three tournaments.
