Alexander Zverev has enjoyed plenty of success in Germany, winning back-to-back titles in Munich at the BMW Open by FWU. So it was no surprise that he performed well for a home crowd on Friday in the Davis Cup Qualifiers Round. The reigning Nitto ATP Finals champion gave Germany a 2-0 lead over Hungary with an emphatic 6-2, 6-2 win against Peter Nagy. Zverev struck 11 aces and did not face break point to triumph in just 69 minutes.

His veteran compatriot, Philipp Kohlschreiber, did not have his rubber anywhere near as easy. But Kohlschreiber pulled through nonetheless, battling past Zsombor Piros 6-7(6), 7-5, 6-4 in two hours and 39 minutes. The 35-year-old saved seven of the 10 break points he faced in his 17th Davis Cup win.

Denis Shapovalov and Martin Klizan both earned wins for their respective nations to head into Saturday locked at 1-1 in Bratislava, Slovakia. The Canadian, Shapovalov, who reached the Australian Open's third round last month (l. to Djokovic), gave the visiting side a 1-0 lead with a 6-4, 7-5 victory against Filip Horansky in 49 minutes.

“It was a fun match for me,” Shapovalov told DavisCup.com. “Obviously there was a lot of pressure on me going into the match. I thought the level he played at was Top 50 tennis. If he continues his level like that, he’s going to achieve really good things."

Home favourite Martin Klizan soon levelled the tie though, beating #NextGenATP Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime 7-5, 6-3. Klizan converted five of 10 break points en route to a one-hour, 36-minute victory.

Jiri Vesely and Robin Haase both emerged victorious in a tight opening day in Ostrava, Czech Republic. Vesely got the home nation off to a winning start, recovering from a set down to beat Tallon Griekspoor 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, before Robin Haase grabbed the second rubber for the visiting Dutch after just 67 minutes. Haase won 90 per cent of first-serve points (27/30) and did not face a break point en route to a 6-2, 6-4 win over Lukas Rosol in 67 minutes.

Chilean Nicolas Jarry and Austrian Dennis Novak ensured the tie went into Saturday's third rubber level at 1-1. Currently ranked No. 41 in the ATP Rankings, Jarry earned the first point in Salzburg, Austria, edging Jurij Rodionov 7-5, 7-5. But Novak found the perfect response for the home team, levelling the qualifiers round tie with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Christian Garin.

Brazil and Belgium are locked in a battle entering Saturday play. Brazilian Thiago Monteiro won the first rubber in exactly one hour, defeating Kimmer Coppejans 6-3, 6-2, breaking serve five times in the match. Belgian Arthur De Greef helped his country rebound though, dismissing 34-year-old Rogerio Dutra Silva 6-4, 6-4 in one hour and 44 minutes.

Belgium reached the final of the Davis Cup in 2015 and 2017, led by 2017 Nitto ATP Finals runner-up David Goffin, who is not competing in this tie.

Santiago Giraldo and Daniel Elahi Galan carried the home nation to a 2-0 lead over Sweden, with victories over the Ymer brothers on indoor clay courts. Giraldo, 31, dismissed 22-year-old Elias Ymer 6-2, 6-4, avenging his loss to the Swede last year in the qualifying rounds of the Miami Open. Galan, 22, followed by defeating 20-year-old Mikael Ymer 6-1, 6-2 in 74 minutes.

Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah, who finished as the No. 2 duo last season, will attempt to clinch the tie for Colombia when they take on Markus Eriksson and Robert Lindstedt on Saturday.

Alexander Zverev pomógł reprezentacji Niemiec w zwycięstwie 5:0 z Węgrami w meczu barażowym o awans do turnieju finałowego Pucharu Davisa 2019. Lider drużyny naszych zachodnich sąsiadów zapowiedział jednak, że nie zagra w imprezie w Madrycie.

W miniony weekend rozegrano 12 spotkań barażowych o awans do finałowego turnieju Pucharu Davisa 2019. Jedną z drużyn, która zapewniła sobie występ w imprezie w Madrycie, są Niemcy. Nasi zachodni sąsiedzi we Frankfurcie pokonali 5:0 Węgrów, a dużą rolę w tym sukcesie odegrał Alexander Zverev. Hamburczyk zdobył dla swojej drużyny dwa z pięciu punktów, wygrywając oba pojedynki singlowe, jakie rozegrał.
Baraże o turniej finałowy były jednym z elementów reformy reprezentacyjnych zmagań. Za sprawą działań Międzynarodowej Federacji Tenisa (ITF) oraz kierowanej przez piłkarza Gerard Pique firmy Kosmos rozgrywki zostały całkowicie zrewolucjonizowane. Zlikwidowano formułę gry u siebie i na wyjeździe w Grupie Światowej. W zamian odbędzie się turniej finałowy z udziałem 18 najlepszych reprezentacji. W tym roku najlepsze drużyny narodowe świata w dniach 18-24 listopada będzie gościł Madryt.

Reforma została skrytykowana przez wiele postaci ze świata tenisa. Nie podoba się również Zverevowi. Choć aktualnie trzeci tenisista rankingu ATP pomógł swojej reprezentacji w awansie do turnieju finałowego, jasno postawił sprawę, że nie ma zamiaru w nim wystąpić.

- Gra w domu to wyjątkowe uczucie i szkoda, że go tracimy - mówił Zverev. - Byłem tutaj w ten weekend, ale do Madrytu chłopaki pojadą beze mnie.

Niemiec nie skrytykował Pique, na którego spada największa krytyka za zmiany w Pucharze Davisa. - Jesteśmy przyjaciółmi i często ze sobą rozmawiamy. Zjedliśmy też razem obiad. Bardzo dobrze się dogadujmy. Jest świetnym gościem, ale nie ma świecie osoby, która mogłaby zmienić moje zdanie o tym. Jestem dorosłym człowiekiem i mam własną opinię. I tak pozostanie.

- Uważam, że nowy format Pucharu Davisa jest zły i że w przyszłości dojdzie do zmiany. W poprzedniej formule zawsze grałem w Pucharze Davisa. Mam nadzieję, że kiedyś wygram te rozgrywki, ale w formacie, w którym były rozgrywane przez poprzednie 120 lat - dodał Zverev.

Alexander Zverev miał być największą gwiazdą 46. edycji ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament, ale ostatecznie nie wystąpi w hali Rotterdam Ahoy. - Alexander narzekał na uraz kostki już przed Australian Open i problem ten powrócił podczas Pucharu Davisa. Z tego powodu nie może grać w naszym turnieju - powiedział Richard Krajicek.

Zverev Explains Why He Is Excited For Acapulco Return

No player finished the 2018 ATP Tour season on a higher note than Alexander Zverev. The 21-year-old became the youngest player to win the Nitto ATP Finals since Novak Djokovic in 2008. Zverev was also the first German to triumph at the season finale since Boris Becker in 1995.

But Zverev fell short of earning his best performance at a Grand Slam last month in Melbourne, losing to former World No. 3 Milos Raonic in straight sets in the fourth round of the Australian Open. In his first tournament since, the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presentado por HSBC, the second seed is eager to return to winning ways. Zverev is pursuing his 11th ATP Tour title.

“Every player has played more than me, basically. “I had to take Rotterdam off, unfortunately, and I was with a doctor that I’ve seen for a long time already,” Zverev said. “I hope it’s going to get better, and I hope I’ll be pain-free very shortly.”

It certainly doesn’t hurt that Zverev is returning to action in Acapulco, where he is staying in a house that is 20 metres from the beach. While Zverev is fully focused on the tennis, the setting is an added bonus.

“I go every morning to the beach. I enjoy the water a lot. I think this place is in a way a holiday,” Zverev said. “We do obviously practice a lot. I’ve been practising four hours a day. But in a way this is still holidays for us and we enjoy being here.”

Alexander Zverev continues to have Alex de Minaur's number. The German improved his FedEx ATP Head2Head against the #NextGenATP Aussie to 4-0 with a convincing 6-4, 6-4 win on Thursday to reach the semi-finals of the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presentado por HSBC.

"We played three times last year and we're going to play many more times in the future. He's a great young player with a lot of potential," said Zverev. "It's never easy to play him, especially after last night (vs. Ferrer), which was a very emotional match for me and the crowd. I'm happy to get through."

The second seed is through to the last four in Acapulco for the second straight year. He hasn't dropped a set in three matches this week and has been especially impressive on serve. Zverev fired 13 aces and won 91 per cent (29/32) of first-serve points against de Minaur, requiring a single break in each set to advance in 75 minutes.

Although de Minaur is off to an impressive start this season, including winning his first title last month at the Sydney International (d. Seppi) and building an 11-3 record overall, he is now 0-11 against Top 10 players.

Next up for Zverev is Brit Cameron Norrie, who reached his first ATP 500 semi-final by easing past American Mackenzie McDonald 6-3, 6-2. McDonald was far from his best and finished the day with 13 winners to 35 unforced errors, but Norrie avoided complicating matters by saving all four break points he faced. The Brit, a runner-up in January at the ASB Classic (l. to Sandgren), improves to 8-4 this season.

"I was nervous. It was a big opportunity for both of us, but I played really solid today. I got a lot of rhythm from my match yesterday against Diego [Schwartzman] and I'm really stoked to get into my first [ATP 500] semi-final," said Norrie. "I've got nothing to lose tomorrow and all the pressure is on [Zverev]."

Zverev Reaches Acapulco Final For The First Time

Alexander Zverev is on the verge of capturing his first ATP Tour title of 2019, defeating Brit Cameron Norrie 7-6(0), 6-3 on Friday to reach the final of the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presentado por HSBC.

"I'm very happy to be in the final. That was the goal at the start of the week," Zverev said.. "This is so far a very special week for me and I hope I can continue it."

The reigning Nitto ATP Finals champion has gone one step further than he did on his Acapulco debut last year, when he lost to Juan Martin del Potro in the semi-finals in straight sets. Zverev, the second seed, has not lost a set this week, getting broken just twice through four matches.

Norrie was fresh off an impressive straight-set quarter-final victory against in-form American Mackenzie McDonald. But he could not reach his second ATP Tour final (Auckland earlier this year), as Zverev was too solid from the baseline. The German did not make many errors, and while Norrie battled, Zverev was never under much pressure in baseline rallies.


Norrie entered the match leading the tournament in first-serve return points won at 45 per cent. But Zverev did well to get ahead in rallies using his first delivery, striking 10 aces and winning 81 per cent of first-serve points. He has won 86 per cent (118/136) of first-serve points this week against #NextGenATP Aussie Alexei Popyrin, David Ferrer, Sydney champion Alex de Minaur and Norrie.

But the key came on second-serve points against the World No. 64 Norrie, as Zverev captured 65 per cent of those points. While he was broken when serving for the first set at 5-4, Zverev shrugged off that hiccup and did not lose a point in the ensuing tie-break.

"It was very tough. It was pretty windy out here, not easy conditions, and his game actually I think fits the wind quite well, so it was not easy," Zverev said. "I'm just happy to be through. At this stage, you've got to win matches, no matter how. I'm just happy to be in the final."

Alexander Zverev went all in during a visit to the Humane Society of Greater Miami on Tuesday.
A scheduled half-hour promotional visit to the dog and cat adoption facility turned into a significantly longer commitment when the Miami Open second seed left with a two-month-old terrier mix, Pop.
"Sascha came into the room, Pop walked over to him and they had a major, major cuddle session. It was love at first site,” said Jossie Aguirre, Humane Society of Greater Miami Director of Marketing and Special Events.
"He's still in my arm [and is ] very calm,” Zverev said during his visit with fellow 2018 Miami Open finalist John Isner. “He seems quite happy and I'm very happy to take him home."

After getting the necessary clearances, Zverev plans to bring Pop to his home in Monte-Carlo, where his other dog, Lovik, resides.
Pop was among a litter of 11 brought to the facility. He is the eighth member of the family to be adopted and Ms. Aguirre believes Zverev’s support will help to see the remaining three puppies find a loving home.
“Every time we get a celebrity adopting a pet, it leads to increased traffic to our social accounts and we’ve seen several more people starting to follow our accounts today,” Ms. Aguirre said.
The Humane Society of Greater Miami is a limited admit, adoption guarantee facility dedicated to placing every dog and cat in their care into a loving home, and to promoting responsible pet ownership and spay/neuter programs.

Zverev Faces New Dog Dilemma In Miami

Returning finalist looks for another strong run at ATP Masters 1000 tournament
Alexander Zverev has a small dilemma. Not on the court, when he returns to action this week at the Miami Open presented by Itau, but with the newest addition to his family: a puppy that followed him home Tuesday upon a promotional visit to the Humane Society of Greater Miami.

“Legally, in the United States, you’re not allowed to take a dog (out of the country) until it’s six months old and it’s two months old right now… I can’t stay in the U.S. for the next four months!” Zverev shared during his pre-tournament press conference.

The World No. 3 already has a poodle named Lovik and hadn’t gone to the Humane Society with intentions of getting another dog, but shared that there was no question of adopting Pop once the terrier mix determined that Zverev was the chosen one.

“You know the saying, the owner doesn’t choose the dog, the dog chooses the owner?” said Zverev. “This one just came up to me, it looked at me. I petted him a little bit... It just followed me for 20-25 minutes. Every time I would stop, it would sit down and look at me. I walked somewhere else, it’d come after me, sit down and look at me again. I would walk in circles, it would walk after me every single time. At some point I sat down on the floor, it crawled up to my arms and never left me.”


With another deep run this week in Miami, he can extend his time with his new puppy, should Pop need to go live temporarily with a family friend in the United States until receiving the necessary clearance to travel to Europe.

Last year at this ATP Masters 1000 tennis tournament, Zverev came up short in the championship match against American John Isner, 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-4. He finished the season with four titles from six finals, highlighted by the season-ending Nitto ATP Finals trophy, and an ATP Tour-best 58 match wins.

“My consistency last year was unbelievable,” said Zverev. “If you look at it, I made three Masters finals, I won one. I won the [ATP] Finals. I made the semi-finals of five Masters out of nine – I think that’s the most of any player. Big events, normally I’ve done well, except the Grand Slams, which is a different story. In the smaller tournaments, when I played them, I either won them or made the semi-final or final, at least.”

Thus far in 2019, he has reached the Round of 16 at the Australian Open (l. to Raonic) and the final at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presentado por HSBC (l. to Kyrgios). He was unable to maintain his momentum from his Acapulco run after being sidelined with illness for nine days, and struggled in a second-round loss against Jan-Lennard Struff at the BNP Paribas Open. But Zverev is now fever-free and ready to compete.

“I went on court without warm-up, without any preparation, just to play in a match and see if I have energy,” he said. “For me, you can’t play a Masters 1000 like this….

“But I’m happy to be here, I’m healthy again. History-wise, this is a place where I’ve always done well.”

Since making his Masters 1000 main draw debut here in 2015 as a qualifier, Zverev has compiled a 10-4 tournament record, including a victory over then-World No. 3 Stan Wawrinka two years ago en route to the quarter-finals. He reflected on the boost he received from the energetic crowds in Key Biscayne, and hoped that the special feeling would carry over to the Miami Open’s new home at the Hard Rock Stadium.

“I always play the best in countries and in places where I feel the energy…. I hope it’s going to take over from Crandon Park and take all the energy here and just to make it even bigger,” said Zverev, who will open his campaign against either Sam Querrey or David Ferrer. “Hopefully it’s going to be a similar vibe.”

Na Florydę Niemiec przybył wprost z Indian Wells, gdzie w zeszłym tygodniu zmagał się z infekcją i odpadł już w III rundzie, przegrywając z Janem-Lennardem Struffem. - Wyszedłem na kort bez rozgrzewki, bez przygotowania, tylko po to, aby rozegrać mecz i sprawdzić czy mam siły, Uważam, że taki sposób nie możesz grać w turniejach Masters 1000 - wspominał. - Ale wyzdrowiałem i cieszę się, że jestem w Miami. Pod względem historycznym to miejsce, gdzie zawsze dobrze sobie radziłem.

Zverev w Miami dwukrotnie odpadł w II rundach (lata 2015-16), w sezonie 2017 doszedł do ćwierćfinału, a w zeszłorocznej edycji, ostatniej rozegranej na obiektach Crandon Park dotarł do finału, w którym przegrał z Johnem Isnerem. Teraz liczy, że na Hard Rock Stadium, gdzie został przeniesiony turniej, także pokaże się z dobrej strony.

Zverev, Nadal Ready For Clay-Court Swing

Two-time clay-court ATP Masters 1000 titlist Alexander Zverev isn't waiting around to start his clay-court swing. The World No. 3 is the top seed at the Grand Prix Hassan II in Marrakech, an ATP 250 event that starts Monday.

Zverev heads into Africa's only ATP Tour event as the favourite to win his 11th ATP Tour title and fifth on clay. The 21-year-old German has won a clay-court Masters 1000 title in each of the past two seasons, first beating Novak Djokovic at the 2017 Internazional BNL d'Italia in Rome for his maiden Masters 1000 crown. Last year, Zverev didn't drop his serve all tournament en route to beating Austrian Dominic Thiem for the crown at the Mutua Madrid Open.

With thousands of ATP Ranking points up for grabs, the nine-week clay-court swing will be vital for Zverev and anyone else looking to gain ground in the ATP Race To London. The clay-court swing features three Masters 1000s – the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters, Mutua Madrid Open and Rome – along with Roland Garros. From those four tournaments alone, the winners will take home 5,000 points.
World No. 2 Rafael Nadal has dominated the stretch better than anyone during the past decade-plus. Last year, he captured his 11th titles in Monte-Carlo, at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell and Roland Garros. No other male has won a single event 11 times, let alone three events on that many occasions.
The Spaniard will especially want to flex his muscle on the red dirt if he's to be in contention for the year-end No. 1 ATP Ranking come November. Nadal is defending 4,680 points that he earned last season. In 2018, 63 per cent of Nadal's total 7,480 ATP Rankings points came from his time on the European clay courts.

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic will also be itching to return to his home surface. Djokovic, however, won't be eager because of his memories from a year ago, but rather, by what did not happen last year.
Twelve months ago, the Serbian was still in the midst of his comeback from right elbow surgery, and he began to make strides by reaching the semi-finals in Rome and the quarter-finals at Roland Garros. But the 31-year-old seeks his first clay-court title since 2016 Roland Garros.
Dominic Thiem, an eight-time clay-court ATP Tour champion, should start this year's clay-court swing armed with more confidence than ever. The Austrian beat Roger Federer to win his maiden Masters 1000 title at the hard-court BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells last month.
The past two seasons, Thiem is the only player to have beaten Nadal on clay, doing so at 2017 Rome and 2018 Madrid. Nadal, for his career, has won 92 per cent of his clay-court matches (415-36), according to the FedEx ATP Performance Zone.
This could be the year Thiem matches his Indian Wells breakthrough on clay. The past two years, the Austrian, No. 5 in the ATP Rankings, has reached the Madrid final (l. to Nadal, Zverev).
Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro is still recovering from his fractured right patella, but he received positive news from his doctor last week and hopes to return soon.

The clay-court swing also begins on Monday with the Fayez Sarofim & Co. U.S. Men's Clay Court Championship in Houston. Two-time defending champion Steve Johnson will go for the trifecta. No player has won back-to-back-to-back titles at the tournament since Bobby Riggs in 1936-38.
