Zverev Dodges Koepfer Challenge To Reach Second Round In Halle
Spoiler:
German to next face winner of Humbert or Querrey
Third seed Alexander Zverev navigated past a tricky opening test against fellow German Dominik Koepfer to win 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 on Tuesday to move into the second round of the NOVENTI OPEN in Halle.
Zverev had to make a quick turnaround after reaching his first Roland Garros semi-final on Friday (l. to Tsitsipas), capping off a successful clay-court season in which he also lifted the trophy at the Mutua Madrid Open in May.
The German has lifted 15 trophies on clay and hard courts, but is seeking his first on grass after previously reaching two finals in Halle in 2016 (l. to F. Mayer) and 2017 (l. to Federer).

“I didn’t feel well on the grass yet. This is my third day on it, but for a good reason because I played pretty well in Paris,” Zverev said in an on-court interview. “There is still a lot of work ahead of me, but I’m definitely happy to get the win.”
Zverev fired 29 winners and 29 unforced errors against Koepfer, who struck 15 and 28, respectively, to improve to 2-0 in their ATP Head2Head record. Zverev took down Koepfer earlier this year on his way to the Acapulco title, in a memorable match during which the pair played through a 5.7 magnitude earthquake.
How To Watch
Their second tour-level clash wasn’t quite as earthshaking, but still featured plenty of drama as Zverev went down an early break in the first set and dropped the second set to Koepfer. The No. 6-ranked German’s big serve was firing, especially in the third set where he only dropped a total of three points in his service games.
Zverev and Koepfer were still locked on serve deep in the third set, before Zverev fired a zinging passing shot at 4-3 to convert his second break point and serve for the match. He set up match point with a powerful forehand approach shot before clinching his spot in the second round after an hour and 47 minutes.
He awaits the winner of Ugo Humbert and Sam Querrey next for a spot in the Halle quarter-finals.

The fourth seed next faces Norbert Gombos or Tennys Sandgren
Fourth-seeded German Alexander Zverev began his quest for a first Grand Slam title in style on Tuesday at Wimbledon as he overcame qualifier Tallon Griekspoor 6-3, 6-4, 6-1.
The 24-year-old fired 20 aces and won 77 per cent (37/48) of his first-service points on No. 1 court to advance in 94 minutes. Zverev lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas, who fell in the first round to Frances Tiafoe on Monday, in the semi-finals at Roland Garros earlier this month.
“It is great to see everything slowly going back to normal. The moment I walked out onto this court made me very happy, to see all the people here,” Zverev said. “I felt comfortable on the court. It is great we have a roof on court one now.
”Wimbledon is such a historic tournament, and they keep on improving, trying to make it better for the players and the public, and that is why everyone loves this tournament.”

Zverev has won titles at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presentado por HSBC (d. Tsitsipas) and the Mutua Madrid Open (d. Berrettini) this year, and next faces Norbert Gombos or Tennys Sandgren. The German’s best performance at The Championships was a run to the fourth round in 2017 (l. to Raonic).
After Zverev faced an early scare against the Dutchman, fending off two break points in the opening game, he combined his explosive serving with heavy baseline hitting to power into a 5-1 lead. While he was pegged back to 5-3, Zverev closed out on serve, hitting 12 winners in the first set.
After the roof was closed in the early stage of the second set due to rain, Griekspoor struggled to control his groundstrokes. He stuck the ball well as he attempted to overpower the World No. 6, but in doing so, frequently fired his forehand long. He committed 10 unforced errors in the set as Zverev moved further ahead, breaking twice to establish control.
Zverev returned well throughout to neutralise the Griekspoor delivery. He then continued to serve well in the third set, winning 83 per cent (10/12) of his first-service points to lead 4-1, before breaking with a backhand winner for the seventh time in the match. Last year's US Open finalist now holds a 9-5 record at Wimbledon.
The World No. 124 Greikspoor was making his debut at Wimbledon after coming through qualifying. The 24-year-old is now 2-4 on the season at tour-level.

German star to meet Fritz or Johnson on Saturday
Sixth seed Alexander Zverev was strong on serve Thursday to sweep past American Tennys Sandgren 7-5, 6-2, 6-3 in one hour and 45 minutes on No. 2 Court at The Championships, Wimbledon.
The German, who arrived for his sixth tilt at the Wimbledon trophy on the back of a second-round exit at the NOVENTI OPEN in Halle (l. to Humbert), hit 13 aces and lost just 12 service points in his second ATP Head2Head meeting against Sandgren.

Zverev will now challenge another American in 31st seed Taylor Fritz, who is returning from right knee surgery just three weeks ago, or Steve Johnson in the third round at the All England Club.
World No. 6 Zverev has compiled a 26-10 match record this year, including two ATP Tour titles at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presentado por HSBC (d. Tsitsipas) and the Mutua Madrid Open (d. Berrettini). Last month, he reached the Roland Garros semi-finals (l. to Tsitsipas) and is currently in fourth position in the FedEx ATP Race To Turin for a spot at the Nitto ATP Finals, which will be held from 14-21 November.

Zverev stepped up in the latter stages of the first set to force Sandgren into error at 5-5 and he went onto hit three consecutive winners to clinch the 40-minute opener. From 0-1 down in the second set, Zverev continued to apply the pressure to win five straight games. Having lost five service points in the first set (24/29), Zverev won all 16 on serve in the 30-minute second set, which ended with a forehand winner.
The 24-year-old carried the momentum into the third set, breaking serve at 1-1 when Sandgren made a backhand error. Sandgren, who failed to convert his lone break point in the next game, ended the match with his 25th unforced error.

Zverev Continues Wimbledon Quest With Hard-Fought Win
Spoiler:
Zverev next faces Canadian Auger-Aliassime on Monday
Fourth seed Alexander Zverev fought past Taylor Fritz 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-3, 7-6(4) on Saturday to reach the fourth round at Wimbledon, equalling his best performance at The Championships.
The German rallied after losing the first set, as he fired 19 aces and hit 45 winners to advance in two hours and 37 minutes. Zverev is bidding to win his first Grand Slam title at SW19 after reaching the semi-finals at Roland Garros (l. to Tsitsipas) in June and the US Open final (l. to Thiem) last year.

The 24-year-old, who also reached the fourth round at the All England Club in 2017, will next face 16th seed Felix Auger-Aliassime after Nick Kyrgios retired during their clash.
After Fritz fended off two break points in his opening service game, he grew into the match. The 23-year-old struck the ball cleanly from the baseline, hitting 13 winners to force a tie-break which he claimed when Zverev pushed a forehand wide.
Zverev battled back in the second set, winning 94 per cent (15/16) of his first-service points as he moved 3-1 ahead. The German was temporally pegged back but continued to close the net effectively, showing good touch to level. Zverev did not lose a single point (18/18) behind his first serve or face a break point in the third set as he moved ahead on No. 2 Court.

In the fifth game of the fourth set, Zverev applied yet more pressure on Fritz’s serve, stepping up the court to attack his backhand. However, the World No. 40 held as he hit a superb forehand from well behind the baseline to deny Zverev on break point. The set then moved into a tie-break, which the German claimed when Fritz hit a forehand return long.
Fritz, who underwent knee surgery three weeks ago, matched his best display at a Grand Slam this week at SW19. The American has enjoyed runs to the semi-final at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open Doha (l. to Basilashvili) and the Sardegna Open in Cagliari (l. to Sonego) this year.
