“I doubt about myself, I think the doubts are good in life. The people who don’t have doubts I think only two things: arrogance or not intelligence.”- Rafa Nadal
"There are other tournaments in which I would like to win. However, in the end, trophies are just pieces of metal. The main thing that I took from tennis is love. She will remain with me forever, and I am sincerely grateful for this “ - David Ferrer

Sixth seed Alexander Zverev dug deep on Wednesday as he defeated Russian qualifier Roman Safiullin to advance to the Roland Garros third round.
Safiullin did not show any signs of being overwhelmed on the big stage, but it was Zverev who emerged the victor, 7-6(4), 6-3, 7-6(1), in what was another intense battle against a player who came through the qualifying stages.
The German was quick to praise his opponent, saying: “I think he played a fantastic match. I'm happy to be through in three sets. The match definitely wasn't easy. I'm happy not to have played another five-setter. I think it's going to be important for me during the course of this tournament.”
The 24-year-old Zverev is now 20-8 on the season, including two titles at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presentado por HSBC in Acapulco (d. Tsitsipas) and the Mutua Madrid Open (d. Berrettini). He will next play Serbian Laslo Djere, who overcame compatriot Miomir Kecmanovic 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-3.

Zverev, who recovered from two-sets-to-love down against qualifier Oscar Otte on Sunday, was given a stern test in the 60-minute first set. He was broken when serving for the set at 6-5, but got off to a strong start in the tie-break.
Safiullin maintained his self-belief despite losing the opener as he gained an early break for a 3-1 lead in the second set, but Zverev recovered to win the last five games. The Russian was again a break up in the third set, but an ill-advised underarm serve, when facing break point at 4-2, was pounced upon by Zverev, who won the game and took the set in another tie-break.
“Obviously, I don't do it on purpose,” Zverev said about trailing in both the second and third sets, “I don't go into the match and say, ‘Okay, my tactic is I'm going to be a break down, I'm going to fight back and come back.’ That's not how it works. I'm a break down most of the time because I play unfocused games or the opponent plays well.”

With two-time Roland Garros finalist Dominic Thiem losing his first-round match against Pablo Andujar, and Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer all in the top half of the draw, the German has a clear opportunity to have a successful stay in Paris.
Zverev beat his next opponent, Djere, in their only prior ATP Head2Head meeting in Acapulco this year. This is the fifth time that Zverev has reached the third round at Roland Garros, with his best results coming in 2018 and 2019 when he reached the quarter-finals.

German star to play Nishikori
Sixth-seeded German Alexander Zverev moved into the Roland Garros fourth round on Friday with a 6-2, 7-5, 6-2 victory over Laslo Djere of Serbia under a closed roof on Court Philippe-Chatrier.
The 24-year-old saved three set points at 4-5 in the second set and subsequently won nine of the next 11 games to improve to a 21-8 match record on the season, which includes two titles at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presentado por HSBC (d. Tsitsipas) and the Mutua Madrid Open (d. Berrettini).

“I was down 3-5, 40-0 on his serve and you don’t always come back from that score,” said Zverev. “He played a fantastic match, he is playing great on this surface so I knew I had to play much, much better than the first two rounds and I did that today.
“I am happy that the further we go in the tournament the better I start hopefully playing. This is the main goal of my tennis career, to win Grand Slams and I feel in the past year-and-a-half I am on a very good [path] again and I hope I can continue.”
Zverev, who will next face former World No. 4 Kei Nishikori of Japan, struck 31 winners and converted seven of 10 break points for victory in two hours and eight minutes.

Zverev reeled off the first four games against the Serbian, hitting with great depth and precision from the baseline as Djere struggled to cope. However, after claiming the opener, Zverev suffered a dip at the start of the second set with Djere breaking to love to move 2-0 ahead as the 24-year-old started to play more tentatively. At 5-4 though, Djere failed to convert a 40/0 lead as Zverev saved three set points.
From there on, it was one way traffic with Zverev winning nine of the next 11 games. Djere, who looked depleted of energy after his mammoth five set victory over Miomir Kecmanovic in the second round, is now 13-13 for the season, with his best result a final appearance at the Sardegna Open (l. to Sonego) in April.

German to next face Davidovich Fokina
In the battle between US Open finalists, sixth seed Alexander Zverev triumphed over Kei Nishikori 6-4, 6-1, 6-1 on Sunday to race into the quarter-finals at Roland Garros.
Zverev improved to 16-5 at Roland Garros, his joint-most successful Grand Slam in terms of matches won alongside the Australian Open. He also improved his ATP Head2Head lead over the Japanese player to 5-1, and 3-1 on clay-courts.

The German arrived in Paris after lifting an ATP Masters 1000 trophy on the clay courts of Madrid, recording head-turning wins over Rafael Nadal, Dominic Thiem and Matteo Berrettini en route to the title – along with a first-round victory over Nishikori. Zverev’s Mutua Madrid Open victory marked his 15th Tour-level title, and his second of the season after clinching the ATP 250 event in Acapulco in March.
Both Zverev and Nishikori have seen their five-set records tested during this Parisian fortnight. Zverev was taken the distance by qualifier Oscar Otte in the first round, and improved his record in Roland Garros five-setters to 7-0. Nishikori had two five-set marathons under his belt coming into their fourth-round clash, improving to 26-7 in five sets, the best winning percentage among active players.

But Zverev ensured they would not go into extra sets on Sunday after making a strong start to their Court Philippe-Chatrier night session clash. The German was going to the down-the-line backhand regularly with great success, getting to a 3-0 lead before Nishikori found his footing. That set the tone for the rest of the match as Nishikori found himself making up for lost ground across the one hour and 57 minute match.
Zverev’s first serve let him down as the Japanese player earned his only break of the match at 3-1, consolidating to level the score at 3-3. Zverev never let him get comfortable, dragging the Japanese player from end to end with his heavy groundstrokes. He earned the break back late in the set at 5-4 to close out the opening tilt.
Zverev sped through the second set at the expense of just one game, opening up a 5-0 lead with a double break. In the third, Nishikori dug his heels in after going down another double break for 3-0, running after every ball and returning with interest. He earned unforced errors from Zverev to earn one of the breaks back, but Zverev took back control after a lengthy battle for 4-1. The German reeled off the last two games comfortably to seal his spot in the quarter-finals.
The sixth seed booked a last-four meeting with Alejandro Davidovich Fokina after the 22-year-old Spaniard battled past Federico Delbonis 6-4, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 earlier in the day. The German leads their ATP Head2Head 2-0 going into their first clay-court match-up.
Nishikori was vying to become the 51st player in history to record 100 men’s singles match wins at the Grand Slams. But with his defeat to Zverev brought his win-loss record to 13-11 on the season.

Zverev is now the second German man in the Open Era to reach three quarter-finals at Roland Garros. He follows in the footsteps of Boris Becker, who advanced to this stage on four occasions between 1986 and 1991.
