Medvedev, Nadal Claim Honours In Best ATP Matches Of 2021

2) Nitto ATP Finals, Round Robin, Daniil Medvedev d. Alexander Zverev 6-3, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (6)
The beginning of his career series with Alexander Zverev did not go well for Daniil Medvedev. Their first four meetings all went to the German, even though he was 14 months younger. Three years ago in Shanghai, however, Medvedev solved the perplexing riddle and going into their round-robin match at the Nitto ATP Finals, the Russian had won five of six.

And yet, Zverev came into the Turin, Italy competition having won 28 of 31 matches, including the Olympic gold medal in Tokyo and the title at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati. Medvedev, though, had now won six straight matches at the year-end event, going back to his 2020 title in London. He had also ruined Novak Djokovic’s run at a calendar-year Grand Slam at the last possible moment, beating him in the US Open final.

It was a match of great promise, and one that delivered on lofty expectations.

In a lively start, Medvedev played the big points better as he fended off three break points across his opening two service games and broke Zverev to soar 3-0 ahead. The Russian approached the net well throughout the first set, stepping forward to dictate in the fast condition.

The second set was an even one and with both players strong on serve, with a tie-break needed to split them. In dramatic fashion, Medvedev was punished for a second-serve foot fault at 1/1 and then briefly lost his focus as Zverev capitalised to level, before the German raised his arms to further engage the raucous crowd as he marched back to his chair.

Medvedev continued to successfully attack Zverev’s backhand in the third set as he dominated those crosscourt exchanges. But he was unable to find the crucial breakthrough on the German’s serve as the players were again locked deep into the decider.

When they arrived at a third-set tie-break after a captivating series of ebbs and flows, it looked like Zverev, the No. 3 player in the FedEx ATP Rankings, had reversed the tide against No. 2 Djokovic. He led 4/2 and had one more serve on his racquet. But Medvedev, rising to the occasion of the highest quality, won six of the last eight points and, with his second victory in group play, booked his spot in the semi-finals.

“Today’s match was a matter of a few points, was a really close match” Medvedev said later. “I’m just happy that I made it against such a strong opponent, especially this year, has so many victories, titles.”

Prophetically, he added, “I always say against a Top 10 player for years, which is Sascha, I feel like no matter how many matches you win in a row you can basically lose the same amount in a row afterwards.”

After his obligatory meeting with Zverev at net, Medvedev approached the courtside camera and, as is the victor’s custom, penned a message. “Not tight,” Medvedev wrote. “Hands are shaking.”

He was only half kidding.

Medvedev and Zverev would meet again in the championship match and there would be more great shots, from both sides. This time, however, the writing on the wall would belong to a different author.

Djokovic Doubles Up In Best Grand Slam Matches Of 2021

2) US Open, SF, Novak Djokovic d. Alexander Zverev 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2
All season long, as the pressure and tension mounted, Novak Djokovic remained remarkably poised as he hurtled toward history.

He had won his eighth Australian Open to open the major season, then taken the titles at Roland Garros — beating 13-time Rafael Nadal along the way — and Wimbledon. Thus, he entered the US Open with almost unimaginable possibilities: a Grand Slam not seen in men’s tennis since 1969 and the chance to pass Roger Federer and Nadal with an unprecedented 21st major championship.

But the obstacle was formidable. For six weeks earlier, Alexander Zverev – in another match laced with historic implications – had beaten Djokovic in the semi-finals of the Tokyo Olympics. Zverev erased a one-set deficit by winning 12 of the last 16 games (and then continued on to beat Karen Khachanov in the final). That deprived the 34-year-old Serbian of a chance for an exceedingly rare Golden Slam.

And so it was, appropriately, World No. 1 versus No. 4 in the season’s last major semi-final. Djokovic, perhaps feeling the weight of expectation, did not start well in Arthur Ashe Stadium. For the fourth straight match, just as he had against Kei Nishikori, Jenson Brooksby and Matteo Berrettini, Djokovic dropped the first set. Zverev, a decade younger, looked far fresher.

For the 10th time in 27 major matches, Djokovic was forced to rally from a one-set deficit at the start. Elevating his game, he took the next two sets – the third featured a ludicrous 53-stroke rally – before the German leveled the match with an impeccable fourth. It was Zverev’s lethal serve that got him there, even against the man many people view as the best returner ever.

With Rod Laver, the player who had achieved the last Grand Slam in men's tennis, watching from the President’s Suite, Djokovic displayed the righteous stuff of a champion. A classic drop shot followed by a whistling forehand pass broke Zverev’s serve for a 2-0 lead. A framed would-be overhead gave Djokovic an insurmountable 4-0 lead – and he responded with a roar in the direction of his team.

After three hours, 43 minutes his dazzling quest remained alive. Djokovic had now won all 27 of his major matches for the season and was 4-0 when it went to a deciding fifth set.

“I would like to say thank you, because the atmosphere was amazing, the best atmosphere of the tournament so far,” Djokovic said in his on-court interview. “These are the moments we live for. These are the kind of unique opportunities that we dream of every day when we wake up and are trying to find motivation to go out there and do the same things over and over again.”

Daniil Medvedev would end Djokovic's historic pursuit in the final at Flushing Meadows with a comprehensive straight-sets performance.

Ruusuvuori, Brooksby Wins Among Biggest ATP Tour Upsets Of 2021
5) Miami Open presented by Itau, Second Round, Emil Ruusuvuori d. Alexander Zverev 1-6, 6-3, 6-1

As tournament debuts go, they don’t get much better than Emil Ruusuvuori’s at the Miami Open presented by Itau.

The Finn had edged past #NextGenATP Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz in his first-round match to set up a clash against the in-form Alexander Zverev, who had just won the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presentado por HSBC title.

Prior to the match, World No. 83 Ruusuvuori had earned just one Top 10 victory in his career, with that coming against Dominic Thiem in Davis Cup play in 2019. The task of facing then-World No. 7 Alexander Zverev looked to be a daunting one, and it proved that way in the opening stages.

Zverev made a fast start, racing ahead to clinch the opener as his powerful ball striking forced Ruusuvuori into errors. However, with the pressure off, the 22-year-old remained calm and changed up tactics to impose himself on the match.

In the second set, Ruusuvuori varied his game plan and took the ball early, increasingly moving forward to finish points at the net when given the opportunity. Ruusuvuori broke Zverev four times in the set to level, before he maintained this tactic in the decider to shock the 19-time tour-level titlist after two hours and five minutes for his biggest career win.

"I don't even know myself [how I turned this match around]," Ruusuvuori said in his on-court interview. "I wasn't feeling very comfortable in the first set and I was making a lot of unforced errors. But slowly in the second I was starting to feel a bit better...

“Of course, it's one of the biggest wins in my career, so it feels good."

It was the first time Ruusuvuori reached the third round at a tour-level event this season and just the second time he had made the third round at an ATP Masters 1000 tournament. The 22-year-old would go on to overcome Swede Mikael Ymer in the third round, before falling to Jannik Sinner.
