Argentine reflects on maiden ATP Masters 1000 final run

Despite missing out on two major career milestones with a straight-sets loss to Novak Djokovic in the Internazionali BNL d’Italia final on Monday, Diego Schwartzman shared a positive outlook on his week in the Italian capital after competing in his maiden ATP Masters 1000 championship match.

The 28-year-old, who was aiming to lift the biggest trophy of his career and crack the Top 10 of the FedEx ATP Rankings for the first time, became the eighth player from his nation to reach a Masters 1000 championship match after five straight wins at the Foro Italico.

“Everything is positive… We are playing every single day here. I played [Saturday night] against Rafa, going to sleep at 2:00 a.m. [This morning] going to sleep at 1:00 a.m. And today again,” said Schwartzman. “For us it's a classic tournament on clay, playing many hours, not resting.”

Schwartzman made the dream start to his first Masters 1000 final, breaking Djokovic twice in the opening three games of the match to earn a 3-0 lead. The Argentine was pleased with his overall performance, but struggled to adapt to weather conditions throughout the final.

Schwartzman dropped just one set en route to the quarter-finals in Rome, where he produced two of the biggest wins of his career in back-to-back nights on Centrale. On Saturday night, the World No. 15 played aggressively from the baseline to surprise nine-time champion Rafael Nadal and earn a straight-sets victory.

Just 24 hours later, Schwartzman recovered from a break down on three occasions in the deciding set to overcome Denis Shapovalov in a final-set tie-break after three hours and 15 minutes. Schwartzman placed his name in the history books with his marathon victory against the #NextGenATP Canadian, becoming the shortest Masters 1000 finalist in history (5’7”).

Despite his loss to Djokovic and the physical nature of his run to the championship match, Schwartzman shared a great sense of pride for his achievements and is convinced that his six-match run in Rome will only benefit him when he makes his seventh straight main draw appearance at Roland Garros.

“Six days [rest] for us is like a year. We have a lot of days... to recover," said Schwartzman. "But I also have a lot of confidence. So I just have positive things this week.”


After a sunny week at the Foro Italico, the final was played under grey skies with rain forcing fans in the stands to take cover under umbrellas. Schwartzman was still able to create the opportunities he had in previous matches, but the Buenos Aires native was unable to convert his chances against a player who consistently found his best tennis under pressure this week.

“I think today I played a great match [from] the baseline and I did many good things. The first set, maybe the start of the second, I was [in] control — not control of the match, but doing what I wanted to do on court — playing aggressive, playing solid with good movements,” said Schwartzman.

“But I think the serve, the conditions today, almost raining, was not helping me to do good serves and have the second ball in a good place… I had the chances like when I played against Rafa. But today was that kind of day [where] you don't take the chances and at the end, Novak is Novak. The last three, four games he played unbelievable.”

During the final two days of the tournament, Schwartzman was supported in the stands by as many as 1,000 fans. But the three-time tour-level champion also had the support of a famous face back home in Argentina: football legend Diego Maradona.

Schwartzman, named after the 1986 World Cup winner, received a message of support from Maradona on Instagram after his semi-final victory. Maradona, who made 188 appearances for Serie A side Napoli, told Schwartzman that the final result ‘did not matter’ and that he was ‘already the champion’.


“ before many, many times. We have a good relationship,” said Schwartzman. “He's a big guy. He did history here in Italy. He's almost more famous here in Italy than in Argentina.

“So it's great to have him every single time with the Argentinian people in the sports. He's always watching, always there, always supporting. So it's very nice. I know him, and I just enjoy when these things are happening.”

Looking ahead to Roland Garros, which takes place from 27 September to 11 October, Schwartzman was asked to pick which player would be more dangerous on the terre battue in Paris: Djokovic or Nadal. After mentioning Djokovic’s formidable record in 2020 (31-1), Schwartzman made his case for 12-time champion Nadal and brought two-time runner-up Dominic Thiem into the debate.

“Rafa is the king. It's his house. He went to Roland Garros many years playing good, sometimes not playing his best and he won. He won 12 times," said Schwartzman. "I think Rafa is always there, the guy who is going to win. But Dominic, Novak, many guys are arriving, playing good matches on clay."

Diego Schwartzman, who got a confidence boost recently with a run to his first ATP Masters 1000 final at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome (l. to Djokovic), powered his way into the Roland Garros second round with a 6-0, 6-1, 6-3 victory over Miomir Kecmanovic in one hour and 47 minutes. The No. 12 seed awaits the winner between Corentin Moutet and qualifier Lorenzo Giustino, who led 0-6, 7-6(7), 4-3 when play was suspended on Sunday night.

Chela: 'Diego Is In Great Form’

Argentine’s team discusses the reasons behind his recent run of form

Diego Schwartzman is a person that sticks to his routines when in tournament mode. For example, he is not one to look at the draw in order to prepare for his first opponent, or at his possible matches if he progresses.

The man responsible for doing that, among other things, is Juan Ignacio Chela.

“Diego never looks at the draws. Moreover, when they do the draw, I’m the first to see it,” Chela told ATPTour.com. “In fact, telling him about it is not automatic either.

“Before telling him the name of his first opponent, he asks me if he’s ‘tough’, if he’s ‘very tough’ or if he’s ‘extremely tough’... And as I deem necessary, I basically give him clues until he guesses the name.”

This is the underlying tone at all times in the daily lives of the Argentine’s team. There are plenty of little jokes and, at the same time, a good attitude for professional work. Chela’s jokes are a constant, and he always has a fresh repertoire.

“The jokes and banter are always there, but luckily we know how to deal with moments that are relaxed and those that aren’t... The Tour is too demanding in itself and the pressure you live with all the time. It’s great to have time to clear your mind,” said Chela.

Amid the situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, with the bubble, new dynamics have been established, which Schwartzman and his team had to get used to quickly.

“Now it’s difficult to relax, we can’t go out for a walk and we’re always sharing space with the opponents and other players and the team,” said Chela. “We try to have fun by playing cards and watching series’ with the famous drink ‘mate’ in our room.

“We schedule the daily work together. I suggest what I think is best for him to do, and we come to an agreement. We have a very good dialogue and that’s key.”

“It’s nine-and-a-half weeks since we travelled to the Bahamas before going to the USA,” said Martiniano Orazi, the Argentine’s fitness coach.

Besides his fitness coach, Schwartzman’s team includes physical therapist Luis D’Alessandro and nutritionist Luis Spena. The Argentine is also accompanied at all times by his girlfriend, Eugenia de Martino, who is always the first to join in with one of Chela’s jokes.

At 28 years of age, Schwartzman is all about enjoyment and the constant search for improvement.

“As a player, you never know when things are going to happen but you can control how you do them and that is what we work for,” said Schwartzman. “We wanted to make the most of that time to [make me become] a better player.”
The pandemic changed the Argentine’s routine, but during the enforced break he was able to find time he doesn’t usually have during competition.

“We always work to give him the best as a player and for him to be efficient... he’s a player that fights 100 per cent for every point, and physically he has to be 10 out of 10, rested and with a clear head in order to think and fight,” says Orazi, the same man who looked after Juan Martin del Potro’s body for seven years.

Schwartzman’s recent success did not come quickly and plenty of patience was required.

“Diego is very much a rhythm player and at the start, the lack of matches hurt him, as well as some uneasiness,” said Chela. “We always get over to him that he has to be ready to expect his best moment.”

The results came in Rome, where Schwartzman defeated Rafael Nadal for the first time in 10 ATP Head2Head matches en route to his first ATP Masters 1000 final.

“It was the best week of his career, playing great tennis throughout,” said Chela. “Beating Rafa on clay is very rare in an ATP Masters 1000. Obviously, it gives you confidence for everything that happens.”



Are they treating this year’s Roland Garros any differently? “The matches have to be won on court and all the opponents are really tough,” said Chela. “As Grand Slam matches go by, there are a lot of factors, because they can be long matches... Diego is in great form to deal with anything thrown at him and we have to be very careful at all times.”

Schwartzman has already made his first move in Paris and is looking to keep breaking down barriers at Grand Slam events, where he has reached three quarter-finals. There is a long way to go.

“When a match finishes, that’s when the next opponent appears,” said Chela.

“My current ranking dictates that I should at least reach the last 16 and I start with that goal and to grow from there and have a great tournament,” said Schwartzman, who recognised that his first-round US Open loss to Cameron Norrie made him work harder. “It was a hard blow, but I have grown loads since then. I like playing five-setters, my game is solid, with few errors, aggression, and I’m serving very well. I hope to be able to continue in that vein.

“Rome was like feeling good with my tennis once again… Nobody likes playing against me seeing the results I had and in these conditions. I wouldn’t want to play against an opponent like that. They won’t enjoy their matches with me.”

Schwartzman has sent out a message. All that remains is to see how far it will take him in Paris.

Schwartzman Strides Into Roland Garros Quarter-finals

Argentine to face Thiem or Gaston in last eight

Diego Schwartzman continued his dominant run through the Roland Garros draw on Sunday, beating Lorenzo Sonego 6-1, 6-3, 6-4.

The World No. 14 converted eight of 11 break points to reach the quarter-finals in Paris for the second time in three years. Schwartzman is through to his fourth Grand Slam quarter-final, having also reached the last eight at the US Open in 2017 and 2019.

Schwartzman has continued to play at the level that took him to his first ATP Masters 1000 final at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia last month. Through his opening four matches in Paris, the 28-year-old has dropped just 30 games and he is yet to lose a set.

Schwartzman will face US Open champion Dominic Thiem or French wild card Hugo Gaston for a spot in the semi-finals. The three-time ATP Tour titlist owns two wins from eight ATP Head2Head meetings against Thiem and is yet to meet Gaston at tour-level.

Sonego was competing in the Round of 16 at a major championship for the first time. The 25-year-old survived a five-set battle against Emilio Gomez in the first-round and claimed back-to-back straight-sets wins against Alexander Bublik and 27th seed Taylor Fritz.

Schwartzman and Sonego contested just over three games of play before rain interrupted their fourth-round encounter. When both players returned to Court Suzanne-Lenglen, Schwartzman dominated play to race through eight consecutive games.

The Argentine enjoyed consistent success on his return, as he covered the court well and extracted errors in extended rallies to establish a 6-1, 4-0 advantage. Schwartzman recovered from a break down in the third set, winning three straight games from 3-4 down to improve to 19-9 in 2020. The 12th seed converted his first match point when Sonego failed to control a deep Schwartzman backhand return.

Schwartzman Digs Deep To Beat Thiem For Roland Garros Semi-final

Diego Schwartzman recorded one of the biggest wins of his career on Tuesday in an energy-sapping five-hour, eight-minute victory for a place in the Roland Garros semi-finals.

Schwartzman, the No. 13 seed, dug deep to win one of the matches of the year, 7-6(1), 5-7, 6-7(6), 7-6(5), 6-2, over third seed Dominic Thiem, the 2018 and 2019 finalist, on Court Philippe-Chatrier in south-west Paris.

Schwartzman, appearing in his fourth major championship quarter-final, recovered from 2-4 down in the first set and 1-3 down in the second set. He had the match on his racquet, but crucially missed a forehand on top of the net with his Austrian opponent serving at 4-5, 15/30 in the second set. Thiem dug deep to save one set point at 4-5 in the third set and three set points at 4-5 in the fourth set, which Schwartzman found a way to win to force a decider.

Schwartzman physically worked his way to his 20th victory of the year (20-9 record), wearing down Thiem, who had chased down drop shots against French wild card Hugo Gaston in a five-hour fourth-round marathon. Schwartzman hit 46 winners, while Thiem could only convert nine of his 22 break point chances and committed 81 unforced errors.

The 28-year-old Schwartzman, runner-up at the recent Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome (d. Djokovic), will now play Spanish second seed and 12-time champion Rafael Nadal or Jannik Sinner of Italy.

Thiem

Thiem saved the first break point of the match, in the opening game, and went on to open up a 4-2 advantage, before Schwartzman broke back and was supreme in the tie-break, winning the first five points.

Thiem immediately regrouped to take a 3-1 lead in the second set, but hit his first double fault to hand Schwartzman the sixth game. At 4-4, Schwartzman dealt Thiem a psychological blow, saving seven break points in a 15-minute hold.

But a forehand miss from Schwartzman on top of the net, with Thiem serving at 4-5, 15/30, proved to be pivotal. It shook up the Austrian, who broke for a 6-5 advantage for a way back into the pair’s ninth ATP Head2Head meeting. The titanic 68-minute second set ended with Schwartzman, often seen scurrying behind the baseline, striking a backhand into the net.

Thiem appeared set to break clear when he clinched the first game of the third set, which incredibly featured eight breaks of serve. Schwartzman opened up 3-1 and 5-3 leads, but forehand errors, on both occasions, cost the Argentine. Thiem, struggling on serve throughout, gifted Schwartzman a set point at 4-5, 30/40, but the Argentine over-hit a backhand and came under pressure in the next game, when he was broken after striking a backhand long.

Thiem, serving for the set, was then broken to 15, but won five straight points from 0/1 in the tie-break. Schwartzman saved two set points from 4/6, but Thiem made it third-time lucky at 7/6 with a smash winner.

Thiem again looked primed for his 21st victory in 26 matches this season, when he took a 2-0 lead in the fourth set. But Schwartzman kept fighting and won four straight games. Just as Thiem’s energy levels looked to dipping with Schwartzman at 5-4, 40/0, the Austrian saved three set points — the final one with an outstanding running forehand winner down the line.

Thiem then levelled the score at 5-5 when Schwartzman hit a forehand into the net. Again, the Argentine almost conjured up a way back, but it was the sheer power of Thiem that saved a break point at 30/40 in the next game. Thiem broke clear early in the tie-break, but Schwartzman held firm to take the clash to a decider once Thiem hit a backhand wide.

Thiem continued to strike with great power in the decider, but Schwartzman stepped up with a 3-2 lead to out-rally the World No. 3 and didn’t look back.

The Argentine has now served five times at 0/40 during the clay-court major – once against Lorenzo Giustino in the second round (held), once against Lorenzo Sonego in the fourth round (broken) and three times against Thiem (one hold, twice broken).
