In an interview to Clarin, Diego Schwartzman was asked at what level Roger Federer would have to play so that the Argentine could beat him. 'At 70, 80. I trust a lot on my 100%. In the last two years, the times where I was at my best I could beat players who were at the very top or I felt that I could beat the best guys.

But I also know that there are one or two stages ahead of him', said Schwartzman. Federer defeated Schwartzman in all the four matches played, at 2017 Shanghai second round (7-6 6-4), 2015 Istanbul semifinals (2-6 6-2 7-5), 2015 Indian Wells second round (6-4 6-2), 2014 French Open second round (6-3 6-4 6-4).

The Buenos Aires native only won a set in the Turkish event during a very complicated match for the Basel native who also threw a ball on the grounds. What would he have done if he were not a tennis player? 'I think I would be a football player.


My No. 1 sport is football. Then I committed to tennis because I was better. But coming back to my height, if I were 20 centimetres higher I would be a better tennis player, although I do not know if I would have all that I have.' What advantages would he have been taller? 'The head, mentality, fight, trying to give less with less weapons.

The serve is one of the most important shots. The way I am matches are much tougher but I also replace it with the legs movement, being solid.' ALSO READ:

Homeland Hero: On 11 June 2018, 5-foot-7 Argentine Diego Schwartzman rose to a career-high No. 11 in the ATP Rankings, but could only muster up 11 more match wins during the rest of the season. However, Schwartzman, who comes into Cordoba as the highest-ranked Argentine in the draw, has already posted a semi-final result in his first event of 2019, at Sydney.

Argentine going for third clay-court title

Diego Schwartzman delighted the home crowd on Thursday at the Cordoba Open by reaching his second quarter-final of the season.

The third-seeded Argentine came back from a set down to beat Italian qualifier Alessandro Giannessi 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-0. Schwartzman converted only two of his 11 break points in the opening set, but locked in during the second and third (4/9).

The Buenos Aires native is going for his third title (Rio de Janeiro 2018, Istanbul 2016; both on clay) at the inaugural event. He will meet eighth-seeded countryman Guido Pella for a place in the semi-finals.

Pella won 72 per cent of his first-serve points and swept Spain's Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-4, 7-6(4). The Argentine recovered after seeing his first two match points come and go, including one as Ramos-Vinolas served at 4-5, 30/40.

In another Argentina-Spain matchup, home favourite Federico Delbonis beat 2018 Quito Open champion Roberto Carballes Baena 6-7(3), 6-2, 6-2. Delbonis next faces Spain's Jaume Munar, who upset second seed Marco Cecchinato of Italy 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.

The 21-year-old, who made the semi-finals of the 2018 Next Gen ATP Finals, won all three break points he faced against the 2018 Roland Garros semi-finalist.

Two other seeds also didn't make it out of the second round. Top seed Fabio Fognini lost 6-1, 6-4 to Slovenia's Aljaz Bedene, who will meet wild card Pablo Cuevas in the quarter-finals. The six-time ATP Tour titlist beat sixth seed Malek Jaziri of Tunisia 7-6(5), 6-2.

While holding just a 5-5 record at the tournament, Schwartzman’s finishes are improving. That losing feeling at the Argentina Open? Dominic Thiem still doesn't know it.

The top seed stayed perfect in Buenos Aires on Thursday, winning his 10th consecutive match at the Argentina Open 6-4, 6-4 against Germany's Maximilian Marterer. Thiem has won two titles in the Argentine capital and will face six-time ATP Tour clay-court titlist Pablo Cuevas for a place in the semi-finals.

The Uruguayan executed some perfection as well, winning all four break points against fifth seed Joao Sousa of Portugal to advance 6-4, 7-5. Thiem and Cuevas have faced off four times, including three on clay. Thiem won two of their three clay-court FedEx ATP Head2Head matchups.

On Thursday, the Austrian was playing his first match in nearly a month, since 17 January, when he retired against #NextGenATP Aussie Alexei Popyrin in the second round of the Australian Open. But the 25-year-old showed few signs of rust on the South American clay.

Thiem broke in the ninth game of the opener, and, although he stumbled in the second, losing his serve twice, he recovered in time to break again in the ninth game for the straight-sets win. Thiem improved to 2-0 against Marterer in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series. It's only his second win of the young 2019 season.

This year will be the last time to see David Ferrer playing on the ATP Tour, and his time in Buenos Aires arrived at its end against countryman Albert Ramos-Vinolas, who saved two match points and advanced 3-6, 7-6(9), 6-3.

Ferrer had match points at 6/7 and 8/9 in the second-set tie-break, but both were Ramos-Vinolas' racquet, and he eventually escaped the 20-point tie-break. The 36-year-old Ferrer plans to retire at the Mutua Madrid Open in May.

Ramos-Vinolas will face home favourite Diego Schwartzman, who fought past Slovenia's Aljaz Bedene 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 to book a quarter-final spot. Bedene saved all four break points in the second set, but Schwartzman found ways to break through in the decider, converting three of his four chances.

Fourth seed Diego Schwartzman proved on Saturday at the Argentina Open that he can never be counted out. Down 1-4 in the deciding set of his semi-final against Dominic Thiem, the Argentine thrilled the home crowd by saving a match point to hand the top seed his first loss in Buenos Aires and prevail 2-6, 6-4, 7-6(5).

Playing with the confidence of a man who held an 11-0 record in Buenos Aires, Thiem stepped in the court to control baseline rallies and raced into a 6-2, 4-2 lead. But with the crowd urging him on, Schwartzman’s foot speed extended the points and goaded Thiem into unforced errors. The Argentine went on an impressive four-game run and leveled the match.

The deciding set appeared it might end identically to the second set. Thiem jumped to a 4-2 advantage, but suddenly mistimed several forehands and gave Schwartzman the chance to serve for the match at 5-4. Determined not to let history repeat itself, Thiem earned a break point with a crafty forehand winner and leveled the set when Schwartzman pushed a forehand wide.

Having served for the match, Schwartzman found himself down match point serving to stay in it at 5-6, 30/40. The Argentine erased it with a forehand winner and moved the contest to a final-set tie-break. A forehand error from Them at 5/6 brought Schwartzman to his knees and the crowd to their feet as the fourth seed advanced after two hours and 31 minutes.

He'll play third seed Marco Cecchinato for the title. The Italian advanced to his third ATP Tour final by defeating Guido Pella 6-4, 6-2.

The third-seeded Italian, who captured clay-court titles in Budapest and Umag last year, won 71 per cent of service points (37/52) and did not face a break point en route to victory after 69 minutes. Cecchinato improves to 5-4 this season after beating Pella for the second time in as many FedEx ATP Head2Head meetings. Last week, Pella reached his fourth tour-level championship match at the inaugural Cordoba Open (l. to Londero).

The average height of the Top 10 at the end of the 2018 season was 6'3”. While our sport is undeniably getting taller at the top of the tree, last year, there were two Top 20 standouts under 6' who led the way in the crucible of converting break points when returning.

Hello Fabio and Diego. An Infosys ATP Beyond The Numbers analysis of the Top 20 in the year-end 2018 ATP Rankings focused on break point conversion against first and second serves. The analysis uncovered that Fabio Fognini and Diego Schwartzman stood tallest on tour when the biggest moments in a match arrived.

Break Points Won vs. First Serve
Fognini (5’10”) led the Top 20 in 2018 with break points won against first serves, converting 34.7 per cent (123/329) of the time. The 31-year-old Italian finished the 2018 season ranked No. 13, which equaled a career-high he first reached in 2014.

Schwartzman (170cm / 5’7”) was only 17th best of the Top 20 winning break points against first serves in 2018, but he vaulted all the way up to the the top when he got a look at a second serve.

The 26-year-old Argentine posted a career-best ranking of No. 11 midway through 2018 after reaching the quarter-finals of Roland Garros, losing to eventual champion Rafael Nadal in four sets.

Alexander Zverev saw the most break points against second serves in 2018 with 247 and had the second highest total against first serves, at 352. World No. 1 Novak Djokovic had the most break points against first serves, at 394.


There was almost a 20 percentage-point gap between the average win percentage of the Top 20 converting break points against first serves versus second serves in 2018.

Taller players universally reign supreme on serve leaderboards in our sport, but players under 6' are still thriving and competing at the highest level by dominating on the return side of the equation.

The 25th seed moved into the third round with a 6-3, 6-1 win against Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena. Both Schwartzman and Roberto Carballes Baena lost to Marco Cecchinato during the Italian’s title run at the Argentina Open last month.
