Kyrgios: 'I Could Have Done Some Damage, It's Heart-breaking'

Nick Kyrgios couldn’t hide his disappointment on Saturday after a third-round exit at The Championships, but the Australian insists he will look to play in more tournaments moving forwards.

“I definitely feel more comfortable getting out there,” said Kyrgios, after he retired due to an abdominal strain at the end of the second set against Felix Auger-Aliassime. “When they embrace you, they embrace your personality, they embrace the way you go about it. Of course, I want to go out there and play.

“When I do play, [fans] definitely tune in. All my matches are packed out. I think that's the cool thing about it. They're like, ‘Kyrgios will be playing’ [and] ‘Now he's playing’. There's full hype around it.

“I really enjoyed the crowd this week. It felt like I was playing back home in Australia. It was even better. So it was cool.”

The 26-year-old, who has already undergone an MRI scan, will remain in London for a couple more days before heading to The Bahamas for rehabilitation and training.

“[At] 4-1, 15/15, then 4-1, 30/15, on my service game I felt my ab, my lower left abdominal strain,” said Kyrgios, who underwent a medical time-out on Saturday when he led 5-2 in the first set. “It was just getting worse and worse… I did an MRI. I've done all the right things. I've iced it.

“I sacrificed a lot to be here, to try and play. put myself in a position to do damage. I wouldn't have come here if I didn't think I was going to be able to play a good level. I actually played better than I thought I was going to play.

“It's uncomfortable. If I breathe deeply, I can feel it. Obviously if I get in some certain stretches, I can feel it. So I'm not happy with my injury at the moment.”

Nick Kyrgios, who also reached the Australian Open third round (l. to Thiem) in February, beat French 21st seed Ugo Humbert and Gianluca Mager of Italy at the All England Club this week.

“It’s funny because I woke up today feeling phenomenal,” said Kyrgios. “My hips felt good, my body felt good. I was like, ‘Wow, I'm back, I'm feeling good’. The luck just didn't go my way.

“I felt today [that] I was playing unbelievable. I came out of the blocks. I was returning lights out. I was actually finding my stride. I've never felt more comfortable on the grass honestly. I felt like he was really struggling with the way I was playing. I was making a lot of returns. I was hot. I broke him I think three times in the first set.

“If I got past Felix today, which I looked like in the first set [winning it 6-1], I was playing lights out. I [was] confident going in against [Alexander] Zverev [in the fourth round]. Just so many things that needed to fall into place. I'm just disappointed.”

Kyrgios was partnering American Venus William in the mixed doubles, but barring a miracle will have to pull out of the competition.

”It’s heart-breaking, honestly,” said Kyrgios. “I haven’t had that much fun in a long time. I just got goose bumps thinking the fact I might have to tell Venus Williams I can’t play mixed doubles because of injuries. It’s brutal for me.”

KYRGIOS HOPES TO USE MIXED DOUBLES TEAM-UP WITH VENUS WILLIAMS AS A LEARNING EXPERIENCE

In a pairing that no one saw coming, five-time singles champion Venus Williams partnered with Nick Kyrgios to participate in the mixed doubles event at this year's Wimbledon, and the pair have been a hit after their first match.

Williams and Kyrgios defeated Austin Krajicek and Sabrina Santamaria 6-3 3-6 7-5, in one of the more entertaining matches on Court No.2. The duo entertained the packed stadium and although proceedings seemed light-hearted at certain points, Kyrgios revealed that he wanted to have more than just 'a bit of fun.'

“I just wanted to, not put on a good showing or anything, I really wanted to win,” Kyrgios said after the match. “Like, I’ve never really wanted to win a mixed doubles or a doubles match that much before. I was really trying hard.”

The Australian had high praise for Williams, and rightfully so as the 41-year old is a 16-time Grand Slam doubles champion. Although the match was played with some levity, Kyrgios admitted to almost losing his temper at certain points. However, Williams' calm demeanor and mental strength kept motivated him to stay focused, which enabled them to secure the victory.

“I was like getting so mad at like past points, things that were a bit unlucky and she was, like, I don’t even remember that," Kyrgios disclosed. "She has such a fast memory. I think that's one thing I actually have to take from her. When a point is done, she completely moves on.”


With this being the duo's first pairing, there is no indication of how far they can progress in the tournament. Chemistry doesn't seem to be an issue, although they might need to work on coordinating their post-match high celebrations.

NICK KYRGIOS SHOWS LOVE TO TENNIS FANS SAYING "IT'S CRAZY OUT THERE"

Nick Kyrgios is enjoying himself on the grass courts of Wimbledon and a lot of that has to do with the fans.
Since he stepped onto the courts Kyrgios has always loved playing in front of crowds and his game always had elements of showmanship. After his match against Gianluca Mager, he spoke about the crowds and the match.

"I feel like when [fans] come to my matches now, they know how I am. I'm quite lighthearted. They know it's a bit of a show. They just want entertainment at the end of the day. Like a couple screaming out asking normal questions about Tottenham Hotspur. It's a bit odd. It's crazy out there."

He then shifted his focus towards the match which featured a very tight set that Kygios could have lost. He said:

"[Winning] the first set was huge... I reckon he went out there with a game style knowing, 'If I play my normal game style, I'm going to get crushed. So he played a game style where he didn't even let me get into rallies much."

He was once again asked about interactino with the fans and he just said:

"Obviously the fan base is awesome. I think the people are just excited to see tennis again, at the end of the day. Like crowds seeing Wimbledon, it didn't seem half capacity like the crowds I played in front of. Yesterday against Humbert full, that stadium full. Pretty cool."

Nick Kyrgios will make his return to tennis at Wimbledon and the Australian is feeling good and fancying his chances.
Nick Kyrgios has not played tennis since the Australian Open and despite being scheduled to play some grass prep events he pulled out due to a neck injury. He arrived in London in high spirits and believes he can do damage. He said:

“I feel decent after not playing a match in however long. That time at home was amazing. I felt that Wimbledon is an event that I never take for granted if I can play it. I can’t expect myself to play my best tennis as I did a couple years ago. So I’m not putting too much pressure of expectation on myself. Generally, I feel really good.”

Kyrgios reflected on his 1st round matchup vs Ugo Humbert who is a tricky player to beat especially on fast surfaces. He said:

“Ugo has been playing some incredible tennis. I played a lot of players and I’m tactically switched on, and he’s got the game to do some special things in this sport. He is a very good grass-court player – He’s got a very good serve, very good backhand for a lefty and good volley. It’s going to be tough. I feel that I can beat 50% of the draw on grass without much preparation"

Kyrgios wrapped up the interview by commenting on the fact he is one of the best-known players on the tour:

“It’s ironic. At the start of my career, it was like I was a disgrace to the game. All this kind of bulls***. Now it’s like every time I touch a court it’s fully packed and I’m always on the tennis social media."

Don't Let Your Guard Down! Sock Pranks Kyrgios In Atlanta

American and Aussie rekindled their doubles partnership this week
Never let your guard down around Jack Sock! Nick Kyrgios found this out the hard way after getting quite the scare from his good friend – and doubles partner this week – during Media Day at the Truist Atlanta Open.

The Aussie, who won the title here in 2016, was gamely answering questions from press ahead of his return to the ATP 250 event. But just as Kyrgios was getting comfortable, Sock spotted him from across the way.

Creeping up behind his doubles partner while Kyrgios was reflecting on the great fan atmosphere in Atlanta, Sock waited for his moment to strike. Check out the video above to see Kyrgios’ hilarious reaction!

Sock and Kyrgios have taken a wild card into the doubles tournament in Atlanta, and the pair are gearing up for their first event as a team since the Laver Cup in 2019.

“We’ve played together a bunch before and we’re close friends,” Sock told ATPTour.com later. “I actually haven’t seen him in about 18 months since the pandemic hit. We actually all had dinner in Indian Wells right before they announced the whole Tour – and the whole world, really – was shutting down. We all had dinner there, and then we all flew to our separate homes the next day. That was the last time we saw each other.

“But I knew he was playing here, and this was the first tournament that we actually played together since that time. I figured we’d lace them up and see what happens.”

Sock and Kyrgios will be going for their second doubles title together after claiming the ATP 250 trophy in Lyon in 2018. That is Kyrgios’ lone doubles title, while Sock amassed 15 in his career. The American, who won here in 2014 with Vasek Pospisil, added to his haul after winning the Hall of Fame Open title with William Blumberg in Newport two weeks ago.

Rain Delay? No Problem For Kyrgios & Sock In Atlanta

Nick Kyrgios and Jack Sock did not step on court until nearly midnight Monday evening in Atlanta due to rain. But once they did, the close friends wasted little time getting the job done.

The Australian-American team defeated Pakistan's Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi and India's Divij Sharan 6-1, 6-3 in 50 minutes to reach the second round of the Truist Atlanta Open.

"I have such great memories here and I love playing here," Kyrgios said in an on-court interview. "Obviously [Jack is] one of my best mates, not just on the tennis court, but in my life. I hadn't seen him in forever... It's just good to be back out here to be honest, and we're having so much fun, so it's good."

This was the pair's first match together since the 2019 Laver Cup, where they beat Rafael Nadal and Stefanos Tsitsipas. Kyrgios and Sock triumphed in Lyon together in 2018.

Another tandem of singles stars also advanced Monday, when Reilly Opelka and Jannik Sinner ousted second seeds Jonathan Erlich and Santiago Gonzalez 6-2, 6-2. In the day's other doubles match, Marcelo Arevalo and Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela beat wild cards Keshav Chopra and Andres Martin 6-1, 6-4.

Bassist Pete Wentz stopped by Atlanta tournament to watch ATP 250 action
Nick Kyrgios has a talent for drawing crowds and engaging with fans from all over the world. On Monday night, he got a chance to mingle with one of his more famous fans after getting a visit from Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz at the Truist Atlanta Open.

Wentz and his band were in town touring with the likes of Green Day and Weezer on the Hella Mega Tour, which has its Atlanta stop on Tuesday. Before the concert, Wentz, a lifelong tennis fan, was keen to take in the action at the ATP 250 event and see his favourite player Kyrgios hit the doubles court with Jack Sock.

“I love Nick a lot, I think he’s really rad. He’s got a rad personality and he brings a dynamic energy to tennis,” Wentz told ATPTour.com. “My kids are interested in him too, they like watching him play basketball and talk about basketball.

“My favourite players are also [Aryna] Sabalenka [from the WTA Tour] and Denis Shapovalov. With Denis, the first time I saw him he was playing in a backwards hat, just ripping forehands, and I was like, 'Whoa this is really cool to watch.'”

Unfortunately, Wentz only got to watch a few points of tennis before rain halted play, delaying the start of Kyrgios and Sock’s match for several hours. But the musician still got the chance to meet with the Aussie and chat during the rain delay.


Wentz plays bass guitar for the Grammy nominated band Fall Out Boy, whose hits include ‘Sugar, We’re Goin Down’, ‘Thnks Fr Th Mmrs’ and ‘Centuries’. He told ATPTour.com that he grew up playing tennis at local courts near his home in Chicago. He got back into the sport recently and became ‘addicted’ to tennis about five years ago.

“Fans of tennis are very passionate and fans of music are very passionate – our fans live and die with the band the same way tennis fans live and die with their favourite player, which I think is really cool,” he said. “The live environment is also really cool, and also there’s the idea of the ‘tour’ which is very similar: living out of a bag and going to different places, playing different venues.”

Kyrgios Closes Out Atlanta Night Session With A Bang

Aussie to face third seed Cameron Norrie next
Former champion Nick Kyrgios made a successful return to the Truist Atlanta Open on Tuesday night after fighting past Kevin Anderson 7-6(4), 6-3 to move into the second round.

Kyrgios didn’t face a break point as he aced his way through a tense meeting between two big servers. He won 86 per cent (36/42) of points behind his first serve, and fired 15 aces en route to victory. The Aussie will next face third seed Cameron Norrie, who arrives in Atlanta after claiming his first ATP Tour title in Los Cabos.

“Kevin is no easy opponent, he’s a finalist at Grand Slams and he knows how to win matches,” Kyrgios said in an on-court interview. “His serve is one of the best in the world, so I knew today was going to be incredibly tough. I haven’t played too many matches, but I was serving well and I just love playing here in Atlanta.”

The only break of serve came late in the match, as Kyrgios pounced on a loose Anderson service game at 4-4. The South African gave Kyrgios too many looks at second serves, and the 2016 champion gleefully teed off to claim the decisive break.


At match point, Kyrgios walked over to a fan in the crowd and, after a brief conversation, returned to the baseline. He fired a big first serve out wide that went unreturned, sealing the victory after an hour and 23 minutes.

“It’s a routine that I’ve been doing for the last few years, just trying to get the fans involved,” Kyrgios explained. “I saw that he had an ‘NK Nation’ hat on, and I said, ‘Where do you want me to serve?’ He just said, ‘Just go big, wide.’ So there you go.”

How To Watch

Brandon Nakashima also claimed a late win on Tuesday, needing two hours 25 minutes to takedown local wild card Trent Bryde 6-1, 6-7(5), 6-4. The 19-year-old American, who posted his first tour-level final appearance in Los Cabos, cruised through the opening set but found himself having to fight back as the University of Georgia student raised his level.

Nakashima held his nerve against Bryde as well as the vocal crowd – including the university’s band – were firmly supporting the home favourite. The 19-year-old fired 10 aces and broke serve four times to set up a second-round meeting with top seed Milos Raonic.
