Nick Kyrgios Admits Suffering From Mental Health Issues

Nick Kyrgios made a kick-start to his 2019 Washington Open campaign after defeating Thai-Son Kwiatkowski 7-5, 6-4 in the opening round. The victory came after the 24-year-old lost his doubles opener on Monday night, partnering with Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Nick Kyrgios admitted after the match that he has been suffering from some mental health issues, lately. The Australian, who has been under the headlines for his on and off-court antics, confessed that his playing schedule is also reduced this year.

Kyrgios started the year as world No.35, however, due to his substandard performance during the 2019 season, he slipped to No.52 in the ATP rankings. The Australian clinched the title at the Mexican Open 2019 but his win-loss record in this season still stands at 13-10. Nick Kyrgios revealed that his lack of match play has been due to off-court issues.

He explained in the on-court interview, “I haven’t been playing too much tennis, being going through some mental struggles, but super happy with the win.

However, the 24-year-old was satisfied with his first-round performance in Washington. He continued, “I played well today and I just came through. I just competed well today, I played some really good tennis.”

He further praised the American qualifier and said, “I knew it was going to be a tough, tough match, he’s a great athlete, moves extraordinarily well, so I’m just happy to get through.”

Nick Kyrgios will face 11th seed, Giles Simon in the next round. He suggested that he has no intent on changing his game and will continue to play his natural game against the Frenchman.

“The same thing for me every single match. Serve big and play big and back my instincts. That’s the way I’ve been playing my entire career and we’ll see how it goes,” Kyrgios said when asked about he would attack against 34-year-old.

Nick Kyrgios was at his entertaining best in moving past Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka 6-2, 7-5. The Aussie unleashed a torrent of forehand winners on Stadium Court and broke Nishioka twice in each set, but even brought a smile to his opponent's face during the match. Kyrgios moved to 3-0 in his FedEx ATP Head2Head rivalry with Nishioka.

Tsitsipas will now see Nick Kyrgios across the net after teaming up with him this week in doubles. The Aussie produced a red-hot performance to defeat Slovakian lucky loser Norbert Gombos 6-3, 6-3.

"I’m super happy that all the work I’ve been doing off the court is translating on the court. Four days in a row and four matches at my highest level. I’m pretty happy about it,” said Kyrgios. “I love playing night matches. The crowd gets into it, so I’m just trying to give them some fun tennis and also give them some wins as well."

Kyrgios fired 26 winners to just 10 unforced errors, with 15 of those winners coming in the second set. The 24-year-old hammered 19 aces and only lost eight points on serve (37/45) to advance in 57 minutes. Kyrgios is through to his first ATP Tour semi-final since taking the title in Acapulco this March (d. Zverev) and will look to score his first Top 10 win since that event.

“He’s an amazing player and I have the utmost respect for him,” said Kyrgios. “He goes about it differently than me. We’ve gotten to know each other this week and we’re literally the polar opposites! It’s going to be a lot of fun, so I’m excited for it.”

The Aussie's entertainment value even went beyond the flashy shotmaking he displayed on Stadium Court. After firing an ace on match point, he ran to a fan in the front row and received a congratulatory hug and kiss.

Kyrgios Saves 1 M.P., Beats Tsitsipas In Washington

Aussie will play for second ATP 500 title of 2019
Fifty-one players are ranked higher than Nick Kyrgios in the ATP Rankings, but against the best in the world, there's no one better than the talented Aussie. Kyrgios improved to 4-1 against Top 10 players this season on Saturday, saving one match point and beating No. 6 Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(7) to make the Citi Open final in Washington, D.C.

After an up and down opening two sets, Kyrgios brought his best in the third-set tie-break, serving and volleying and ripping forehands to make his second ATP Tour final of the season. Kyrgios saved a match point with a service winner at 5/6 in the tie-break and clinched the semi-final with a 1-2 serve-forehand combination.

“This week has been awesome. It's probably one of the best tournament weeks of my life. I've really enjoyed myself. D.C. has been a lot of fun. Crowds have been awesome,” Kyrgios said. “But I'm just doing the right things. I'm having the same routine every day. I'm trying to improve on a lot of little habits, and it's paying off. Five days in a row competing, I'm pretty happy with myself.”

Kyrgios beat Medvedev earlier this year in Rome during their only FedEx ATP Head2Head meeting. “He's a super unorthodox player. He's got a very tough game, hits the ball flat. Unbelievable athlete I think for his size. He moves really well," Kyrgios said. "That match in Rome was high level. I thought I played the right way, I had the right tactics, so he's going to make adjustments.”

Kyrgios' 80 per cent success rate (4/5) against the Top 10 this year is best on the ATP Tour. World No. 1 Novak Djokovic, second in the category, has won seven of his nine matches (7/9, 78%) against the elite group.

Kyrgios had everything working for him at the start of his first FedEx ATP Head2Head meeting against the 20-year-old Greek. He was demolishing forehand winners, smacking one-handed backhands and, to go ahead 4-2, he cut a nonchalant backhand volley, handing out fist bumps to the crowd to celebrate.

“He was playing well. He was on fire at some moments during the match... He kept holding his serve and putting pressure on me,” Tsitsipas said.

The Aussie won 87 per cent of his service points, and after a break in the opening game of the second, his place in the ATP 500 final looked all but secure. But Tsitsipas pounced on Kyrgios' second serve to break twice and force a decider.

There, Kyrgios saved two break points early in the third set and saw a match point come and go at 7/6 in the tie-break. But some crafty play while Tsitsipas was at net brought up Kyrgios' first match point on serve.

“I'm pretty happy with myself the way I tried to drag it back from a dark place and managed to hold on the first couple service games in the third set and just competed. I just left it all out there and gave myself a chance to win the match,” Kyrgios said. “I'm pretty happy the way I somehow just battled in and dug deep.”

Aussie asks a fan where to serve on match point for second consecutive night
Guests on the hit game show “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?” could “phone a friend” if a question stumped them. Nick Kyrgios, when serving on match point, uses “ask a fan”.

For the second match in a row on Saturday night, Kyrgios, before stepping to the line to serve on match point, asked a fan where he should direct his serve.

And for the second consecutive match, the strategy worked as Kyrgios belted a first serve out wide to Stefanos Tsitsipas and then smacked a forehand winner to move into the Citi Open final in Washington, D.C, his second ATP 500 title match of the season (Acapulco, d. Zverev).

Kyrgios and his clutch adviser celebrated with a strong handshake on Saturday night, which was a more muted celebration than the one Kyrgios and his female coach shared on Friday evening.

Before serving on match point against Slovakian Norbert Gombos, Kyrgios asked a fan, “Where should I serve this one?” He followed her advice, sliding an ace out wide on the Deuce Court as Gombos was leaning toward the T.

Kyrgios jogged back to his coach, who kissed the Aussie on the cheek and hugged him.

“I feel like it's very easy when someone just tells you where to serve. I feel like you just go all in on that spot and try to hit the spot. That's all you're focusing on," Kyrgios told ATPTour.com on Saturday night. "It's worked two days in a row. Hopefully I get the chance to do it tomorrow. “

Kyrgios also sought some fan support earlier in his semi-final against Tsitsipas. The 24-year-old cooly sliced a backhand volley to go up 4-2 in the opening set, and the Aussie shared fist bumps with fans as he walked to the back of the court.

Kyrgios will face Russian Daniil Medvedev in Sunday's final as the Aussie goes for his first Citi Open title. Fans in the front row will want to pay extra attention should the match rest on Kyrgios' racquet, although it's not as if the Aussie has needed any extra help this week in the U.S. capital. Through five matches, he has hit 93 aces and dropped only one set.

Aussie Nick Kyrgios experienced the gamut of emotions on Sunday during the Citi Open final: Discomfort from his back, glee from his tweeners and joy from another flawless week at an ATP 500 event.

The 24-year-old beat World No. 9 Daniil Medvedev 7-6(6), 7-6(4) for his second ATP 500 title of the season in Washington, D.C. Kyrgios won the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presentado por HSBC in Acapulco in February (d. Zverev) and has now won six ATP Tour titles, including three at the ATP 500 level (Tokyo 2016).

"This has honestly been one of my favourite weeks of my life. I've made massive strides," Kyrgios said. "I started becoming friends with the smoothie guy, he knew what smoothie I wanted. I was playing ping pong with some kids before I'm playing. You guys were amazing. It was honestly a week to remember."

The Aussie mixed up baseline rallies well against Medvedev, slicing and bringing the 6'6” Russian to net with drop shots. But Kyrgios' serve was the story as he never faced a break point and hit 18 aces, including two to close out the final. Kyrgios finished with 111 aces through six matches.

He improved to 5-1 against Top 10 players in 2019, a winning percentage of 83, best on the ATP Tour this year. World No. 1 Novak Djokovic has won seven of his nine matches against Top 10 players this season (7/9, 78%).

Kyrgios, No. 52, will receive 500 ATP Rankings points and is projected to return to the Top 30 on Monday when the new standings are released. He also will receive $365,390 in prize money.

“We all know how well Nick can play when he wants to. This week he wanted to play, and he was tough,” Medvedev said.

The Russian lost only one service point before the first-set tie-break and had the set on his racquet at 5/4. But Kyrgios stole the tie-break, saving a set point at 5/6 and gaining his third mini-break of the tie-break to take the opener.

After the first set, the Aussie took a medical time-out, which seemed to solve the back spasms that had him stretching on the court during changeovers. But he still couldn't break through on Medvedev's serve. The Russian won 80 per cent of his service points for the match (55/69). He will receive 300 ATP Rankings points and $183,780 in prize money.

In the tie-break, however, Kyrgios was again the steadier of the two, jumping ahead by a mini-break at 5/3 when Medvedev lifted a forehand long, and Kyrgios continued his match-point Washington tradition. For the third match in a row, before serving on match point, he leaned over the court side wall and asked a fan for advice on where he should hit his serve. Kyrgios then delivered another ace out wide in the Deuce Court.

The Citi Open sold out seven of 11 sessions, including one of the qualifying rounds. This was the tournament's first edition under entrepreneur Mark Ein. “We shattered every attendance record ever for this event. We beat the all-time ticket revenue on Tuesday night,” Ein said.

Kyrgios' Racquet Emergency Solved By Washington Lobbying

Nick Kyrgios was 19 ½ hours away from one of the biggest moments of his career, playing in the Citi Open final in Washington, D.C.

But after his semi-final win on Saturday night, Kyrgios realised he had a slight problem. He had only one racquet.

The Aussie arrived in the U.S. weeks ago with five. But he donated one to an Atlanta charity, broke two during on-court tirades in Washington and the other racquet wasn't fit for match use.

Some players walk on court with a dozen racquets before any match, let alone a final. But Kyrgios had only one.

Earlier, he had asked his dad to send five more from Canberra, Australia. But, on Saturday night, the handful of sticks were stuck in customs at FedEx's Washington Dulles International Airport distribution centre and scheduled for a Monday delivery, too late for Kyrgios to use them for the 5 p.m. Sunday final. The centre was closed on Sunday.

At 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Kyrgios' team texted Tournament Manager Mark Ein, explaining the situation and asking for help. Is there anything you can do?

Ein, a longtime entrepreneur and investor in D.C., knew just who to contact. FedEx has been a longtime supporter of the ATP 500 event, and for years, Ein has been friends with Gina Adams, FedEx's Senior Vice President of Government Affairs. He called Adams to see what she could do.

But she didn't answer. Ein texted, nothing. He e-mailed. Still no response.

Kyrgios and his team went to bed the night before the final thinking there was a chance he would have to take the court with only one racquet.

Of course, you don't play with two or five racquets. Having only one for the final, in theory, wouldn't be a problem, so long as everything went perfectly: Kyrgios behaved himself, no strings popped and he didn't have a freak slip on the court or a funny landing that caused the racquet to break.

“Obviously playing a final you want to go out there with more than one,” Kyrgios told ATPTour.com.

But by 6:30 a.m. Sunday, they had reason for hope. Adams, who had been traveling and was in Copenhagen, got back to Ein.

“We're on it,” she said. She asked him for updates to track the FedEx delivery.

Two hours later, by 8:30 a.m., the racquets were released from the centre and sent to the tournament site. By 9:30 a.m., they had arrived at the Rock Creek Park Tennis Centre, and the racquets had been strung and were ready for Kyrgios to use for his second ATP 500 final of the season by 10:30 a.m., six and a half hours to spare.

“I was so happy we could get that done for Nick, and I think they were really appreciative of it,” Ein told ATPTour.com. “It's our philosophy to do whatever it takes to help the players perform at their best, really whatever it takes.”

Ultimately, Kyrgios didn't need a bundle of racquets to beat World No. 10 Daniil Medvedev and win his second ATP 500 title of the season and the sixth ATP Tour title of his career. But when Kyrgios takes the court, it's always best to be prepared.

“[Ein] was able to pull some strings for me, and that was massive honestly for FedEx to make an exception and get me some racquets for the final, which was awesome. I'm super thankful to Mark and to FedEx,” Kyrgios said. “Everything happens for a reason. I got the racquets and got the W.”
