Sinner, Kyrgios Seek Further Indoor Success In Montpellier

Jannik Sinner and Nick Kyrgios will make their first indoor appearances of the 2021 ATP Tour season at the Open Sud de France in Montpellier.

Sinner will attempt to capture his second ATP Tour crown in his second appearance at the ATP 250. In his most recent indoor hard-court event, the #NextGenATP Italian defeated Alex de Minaur, Adrian Mannarino and Vasek Pospisil in consecutive matches to capture his maiden ATP Tour crown at the Sofia Open.

Kyrgios has already experienced success at a French indoor event. The 25-year-old, who claimed his maiden tour-level trophy in Marseille in 2016, will attempt to capture his seventh ATP Tour title on his tournament debut in Montpellier.

The ATP 250, which will be held from 22-28 February, will also feature three Top 20 players. Roberto Bautista Agut, two-time semi-finalist David Goffin and Pablo Carreno Busta will all return to the French south coast.

Three-time champion Richard Gasquet and 2019 titlist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will look to add to their Montpellier trophy collections. Ugo Humbert, who won two ATP Tour crowns in 2020, will also bid to extend the tradition of French champions at the event. Since the tournament made its ATP Tour debut in 2010, the event has crowned eight French champions from 10 editions.

Kyrgios: 'I Feel Mentally Completely Refreshed'

Aussie to kick off season at Murray River Open
After spending almost a year away from the courts, World No. 47 Nick Kyrgios is eager to get back in the action as he kicks off the season on home soil at the Murray River Open alongside top seed Stan Wawrinka and #NextGenATP Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Kyrgios last played at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presentado por HSBC last February, opting not to compete after the Tour’s five-month suspension due to the COVID-19 pandemic. For the often restless 25-year-old, the unexpected time off at home gave him a much-needed chance to recharge that he said has left him feeling mentally “refreshed”.

“Last year was a crazy year. I was incredibly lucky to just be with my family and friends and just kind of reset on everything,” Kyrgios said in a pre-tournament press conference. “I feel mentally completely refreshed, ready to go again.”

During the Tour’s five-month stoppage, Kyrgios stayed away from the tennis courts as he took advantage of the time off to immerse himself in other interests. But he got right back to work as this Australian swing approached, enjoying the relaxed restrictions in his hometown to continue training.

“I was lucky enough that Jordan Thompson came down to Canberra for the past month, so we were training together,” Kyrgios said, revealing that he’s been hitting for two hours a day for the past several months ahead of the Melbourne events. “I just felt mentally I felt like I was in a place [of] wanting to play and feel refreshed.”


Kyrgios will have to be in top form from the start as he faces an early challenge at the Murray River Open. He will open against France's Alexandre Muller, and could face Bernard Tomic in their first Tour-level clash should they both advance to the second round.

“I'm just happy to be around it again. I am excited to get out there and play,” Kyrgios said. “[Let’s] see how it goes. Hopefully I can have some good results, as well...

“Everyone is really playing it by ear. Nobody really knows who is in form and who is not. I'm going to take it day by day and try to enjoy myself as much as I can.”

Nick Kyrios worked hard on his ATP Tour return Tuesday at the Murray River Open. The Australian breathed a huge sigh of relief after overcoming the incredible fight of France’s Alexander Muller in a 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(4) victory over one hour and 52 minutes in Melbourne.

Kyrgios, who hadn’t played a tournament since the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presentado por HSBC in February last year, struck 22 aces among 34 winners.

“When I lost the first set I never really panicked,” said Kyrgios, who will next challenge fellow Australian Harry Bourchier in the second round. “I was actually just still finding my feet honestly. I actually thought I was serving reasonably well. I wasn't serving anywhere near my best. I wasn't playing anywhere near my best. But I thought my attitude was okay. I kept that pretty calm.

“I'm actually happy the way I dealt with it and I just drew from experience. I was nice to myself. I was like, ‘Look, you lost a set, your first set back and you're playing a guy who has nothing to lose really’. He came out swinging. I actually think that he would have beaten a fair few guys in the draw today. All around, just believed, really.”

How To Watch

Muller capitalised on Kyrgios hitting a double fault at 3-4 in the 23-minute opener. But Kyrgios raised his game in the second set, rushing Muller into errors. While Kygrios called for on-court treatment of a left knee injury, the 25-year-old held firm in the deciding set tie-break, when he saw Muller recover from a 1/4 deficit. The match ended when Muller hit a backhand into the net.

Two others Australians, James Duckworth and Alexei Popyrin, also reached the second round of the ATP 250 tournament in Melbourne. Duckworth won 26 of 30 first-service points in a 6-3, 6-4 win over Czech Tomas Machac and now faces seventh-seeded Frenchman Ugo Humbert.

Popyrin saved six match points in his 6-7(8), 7-6(2), 7-6(7) victory over Borna Gojo of Croatia. Popyrin failed to convert one set point at 6/7 in the first set tie-break, saved four match points on serve at 4-5 in the second set and another two at 5/6 and 6/7 in the deciding set tie-break. The 21-year-old now faces American No. 15 seed Tommy Paul.

“I think when the first three came along, it was three in a row… on my serve,” said Popyrin. “I was just taking it one point at a time, trying to get my first serve in, trying to hit a big first serve and get a good opportunity to finish the point as quick as possible, because I knew when I would get in a rally I didn't feel quite as comfortable today. I think the conditions were also quite hard. It was quite windy so rally, so it was important to get those first serves in and all the match points, and that's what I did.”

Nick Kyrgios wrócił do tenisa po niemal rocznej przerwie. Poprzedni mecz Australijczyk rozegrał 25 lutego zeszłego roku, kiedy to w Acapulco zmierzył się z Ugo Humbertem. We wtorek, w I rundzie turnieju Murray River Open w Melbourne, stanął naprzeciw Alexandre'a Mullera. I mimo tak długiego okresu bez występów oraz problemów z lewym kolanem odniósł zwycięstwo 3:6, 6:4, 7:6(4).
- Jestem naprawdę zadowolony ze sposobu, w jaki sobie poradziłem. Czerpałem ze swojego doświadczenia. Po pierwszym secie pomyślałem: "Przegrałeś swoją pierwszą partię po powrocie i grasz z facetem, który nie ma nic do stracenia". On grał dobrze, ale ja wierzyłem, że mogę wygrać - mówił, cytowany przez "Sydney Morning Herald", Kyrgios, który w II rundzie zmierzy się z rodakiem, Harrym Bourchierem.


Po tie breaku trzeciego seta do kolejnej fazy awansował również kolega Kyrgiosa z reprezentacji, Alexei Popyrin. Australijczyk obronił pięć meczboli i pokonał 6:7(8), 7:6(2), 7:6(7) Bornę Gojo. W II rundzie Popyrin zagra z Tommym Paulem, turniejową "15".

Inauguracyjnym rywalem najwyżej rozstawionego w drabince Stana Wawrinki będzie Michaił Kukuszkin. Kazach pokonał 4:6, 7:5, 6:2 Juana Ignacio Londero. Oznaczony "piątką" Casper Ruud na otwarcie powalczy z Jirim Veselym. Czech wyeliminował Frederico Ferreirę Silvę.

Viktor Troicki ma za sobą niezwykły dzień. 34-latek z Belgradu najpierw jako kapitan prowadził reprezentację Serbii w wygranym 2:1 meczu ATP Cup z Kanadą, a po kilku godzinach, już jako zawodnik, wyszedł na kort, by w I rundzie Murray River Open zmierzyć się z Emilem Ruusuvuorim. W tej drugiej roli poszło mu gorzej, bo przegrał 3:6, 4:6. Ruusuvuori w II rundzie zagra z rozstawionym z numerem czwartym Borną Coriciem.

36-letni Gilles Simon pokonał 6:4, 6:4 młodszego od siebie o 12 lat Eliasa Ymera i w 1/16 finału zmierzy się z Jeremym Chardym. W amerykańskim starciu Marcos Giron był lepszy od Michaela Mmoha, a jego kolejnym rywalem będzie Adrian Mannarino. Z kolei Yuichi Sugita wyeliminował Quentina Halysa i w II rundzie powalczy z oznaczonym "trójką" Felixem Augerem-Aliassime'em.
