New Day, New Outcome For Garin Against Auger-Aliassime
Spoiler:
Chilean to face John Millman next
Cristian Garin trailed Felix Auger-Aliassime 2-4 when the pair’s first-round match was suspended due to rain on Monday at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters. When the Chilean returned to the court on Tuesday, he raised his game to march into the second round.
The five-time ATP Tour clay-court titlist claimed 11 of the 14 games played on Tuesday and capitalised on 28 forehand unforced errors from Auger-Aliassime to record a 7-6(3), 6-1 win. Garin improved his record on clay this season to 5-1, highlighted by his title run at home at the Chile Dove Men+Care Open in Santiago.
“The conditions were pretty different [from] yesterday,” Garin said in his post-match interview. “Yesterday, the court was pretty humid and today it was faster. I love these conditions. It is my favourite surface… These matches help me a lot to keep looking at the things I have to improve. I am very happy to be playing here in Monte-Carlo.”

The World No. 24 has regained the lead in his ATP Head2Head series against the #NextGenATP Canadian. Garin has won two of his three matches against Auger-Aliassime, with all three encounters contested on clay.
“I didn’t expect to play Felix in the first round. He is a great player with a really great future, so I am very happy with the way I played today,” Garin said. “I hope to keep improving. Most of the tournaments that I played this year were on clay, so I had more rhythm.”
How To Watch
Auger-Aliassime was making his first appearance under the guidance of new coaching team member Toni Nadal this week. The Canadian approached the Spaniard towards the end of 2020 and spent more than a week preparing for the 2021 ATP Tour season at the Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar in Mallorca. Auger-Aliassime opened the year with a run to the Murray River Open final (l. to Evans).
Garin will meet John Millman for a spot in the third round. The Aussie defeated Ugo Humbert 6-3, 6-3 to start his Monte-Carlo campaign on Monday.
“[Millman] is a very solid player,” Garin said. “I saw his match yesterday [and] he played really well. He is a dangerous player. Every player here plays amazing.”

Garin Going For Glory: Second seed Cristian Garin has won all five of his tour-level crowns, including one earlier this year in Santiago, on clay. The Chilean will begin his run against former World No. 7 Richard Gasquet or Argentine Juan Ignacio Londero. Gasquet emerged victorious at this tournament in 2015. Fifth seed Alexander Bublik looms as a potential quarter-final opponent.
Second and third seeds advance in Munich
Cristian Garin is the second seed in the singles draw at the Millennium Estoril Open. But on Tuesday, the Chilean made some noise in the doubles draw. Garin partnered David Vega Hernandez past top seeds Fabrice Martin and Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-2, 6-7(5), 10-5 to reach the quarter-finals.
Garin and Vega Hernandez will next play Andres Molteni and Frederik Nielsen or Ariel Behar and Gonzalo Escobar. Another singles star impressed on the doubles court in Portugal, as Frances Tiafoe teamed with Nicholas Monroe to eliminate wild cards Frederico Ferreira Silva and Pedro Sousa 6-4, 6-2.
Hugo Nys and Tim Puetz defeated former doubles World No. 1 Jamie Murray and his partner, Lloyd Glasspool, 6-3, 6-3, while Marcelo Demoliner and Santiago Gonzalez edged fourth seeds Marcelo Arevalo and Matwe Middelkoop 6-2, 3-6, 10-5.

Second Seeds Peers/Saville Advance In Munich
Australians John Peers and Luke Saville reached the quarter-finals of the BMW Open on Tuesday by defeating Finland's Harri Heliovaara and Emil Ruusuvuori 6-3, 6-4. The second seeds will next face home favourites Dustin Brown and Peter Gojowczyk for a spot in the last four.
Third seeds Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen also advanced. The Belgians beat Jonathan Erlich and Divij Sharan 6-3, 6-2. In other action, Argentines Federico Coria and Guido Pella battled past Andrey Golubev and Andrea Vavassori 6-4, 3-6, 10-8.

Garin Perfect In The Clutch To Beat Verdasco In Madrid
Spoiler:
Delbonis rallies from a set and two breaks down to beat Carreno Busta
Cristian Garin was perfect in the clutch moments on Monday evening to dismiss home favourite Fernando Verdasco 6-1, 6-4 in the first round of the Mutua Madrid Open.
The Chilean No. 1 saved all eight break points he faced and converted the three opportunities he earned to advance after one hour and 27 minutes, setting a second-round clash against German Dominik Koepfer, who ousted American Reilly Opelka 6-4, 6-4 earlier in the day.
The difference in Madrid experience could not have been greater inside Manolo Santana Stadium, as Garin was making his tournament debut and Verdasco was competing in the Spanish capital for the 18th consecutive edition (he also played in qualifying in 2002). But when it mattered most, Garin was the more comfortable player.
The 16th seed played aggressively when he needed to. But more importantly, he gave very few free points away, forcing Verdasco to beat him. The Spaniard could not do so, as he made 32 unforced errors, more than doubling Garin's count (15).

The Chilean reaches his second ATP Masters 1000 quarter-final
Cristian Garin equalled the biggest win of his career on Thursday when he defeated World No. 3 Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 6-7(2), 6-1 at the Mutua Madrid Open.
The Chilean broke the Russian twice in the third set to reach the quarter-finals after 2 hours and 30 minutes. Garin won 75 per cent of his service points, hit six aces and faced just one break point.
How To Watch
This is Garin’s second victory against a World No. 3. En route to the 2019 BMW Open title in Munich, the Santiago native outlasted two-time defending champion Alexander Zverev in three sets.
Garin will meet Belgrade champion Matteo Berrettini or Federico Delbonis for a place in his first ATP Masters 1000 semi-final. The 24-year-old is tied at 1-1 in his ATP Head2Head series against Berrettini and won his only previous match against Delbonis en route to last year’s Rio Open presented by Claro trophy.
Medvedev was aiming to reach his first quarter-final in Madrid. The Russian rallied from a set down to beat Alejandro Davidovich Fokina on Wednesday to earn his first victory in the Spanish capital.
The first set went Garin’s way after a loose service game from Medvedev early on at 1-1. The second set saw no breaks of serve and Medvedev took charge of the tie-break by attacking Garin’s backhand. It was all Garin in the third set, as he broke Medvedev twice and controlled his nerves during a five-minute delay when the net strap broke at deuce in the final game.
