On the bottom half of the draw, third-seeded wild card Cristian Garin rallied past sixth seed Pablo Cuevas 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 after one hour and 57 minutes. Garin won his first two ATP Tour trophies on clay last year in Houston and Munich.

The Chilean will next face Slovakian Andrej Martin, who eased past Frenchman Corentin Moutet 6-3, 6-2 in one hour and 31 minutes. Martin is pursuing his first tour-level title.

Cristian Garin didn't always play his best tennis this week at the Cordoba Open, but the Chilean always discovered a way to be better than his opponent.
The 23-year-old right-hander won his third ATP Tour title on Sunday, coming back from a set down for the third consecutive match to beat top seed Diego Schwartzman 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 in central Argentina. After a slow start, Garin overpowered the home favourite, stepping into the court to put the Argentine on defence and leave him gasping for air.
The home crowd tried to will their man to his first title on home soil, but Garin played fearlessly in the second and third sets, hitting lines and never backing down against the 27-year-old Buenos Aires native.
"Argentina is like my second home... I did not expect to win and I am very happy of course," said Garin. "I’ve won three tournaments in 11 months, its quite a cool thing."

Garin improved to 3-1 in ATP Tour finals, all of which have come in the past 12 months. The Chilean was off to a dismal start in 2020 before Cordoba, going 0-3 at the ATP Cup and falling in the second round of the Australian Open (l. to Raonic).
But Garin ended 2019 as one of the premier clay-court players on the ATP Tour and has started 2020 the exact same way.
"I always thought I could turn the match and win," said Garin. "That's how it has been all week for me and it's what I value most. I think I'm having my best moment but I have a lot to improve."
Schwartzman had played only one final on home soil before Sunday, falling in the 2019 Argentina Open title match in Buenos Aires (l. to Cecchinato). But he enjoyed a nerves-free start, breaking three times in the opener, including in the third game when Garin double faulted for the break.
The Chilean struggled to steady himself in the baseline affair amidst the pro-Schwartzman crowd. The Argentine was doing as he pleased with his forehand and engaging Garin in lengthy forehand-to-forehand rallies.

In the second set, however, Garin calmed his level, breaking up their baseline routine with a backhand up the line to earn two break points at 2-3 on Schwartzman's serve. Two points later, Schwartzman netted a routine backhand, and Garin had his break.
Schwartzman broke back at 3-5, but Garin stepped into the court more often to return the favour and take the second set.
In the deciding set, it was all Garin as the Chilean routinely stepped in front of the baseline and bludgeoned forehands and backhands that Schwartzman could only try to get back in play. Garin showed off his aggressiveness once more on match point, smashing a forehand return winner.
He will receive 250 ATP Rankings points and $91,625 in prize money. Schwartzman, who fell to 3-5 in ATP Tour finals, will take home $50,710 in prize money and 150 ATP Rankings points.

Cristian Garin został zwycięzcą zawodów ATP Tour 250 na kortach ziemnych w argentyńskiej Cordobie. W niedzielnym finale Chilijczyk odrobił stratę seta i pokonał faworyzowanego Diego Schwartzmana.

Było to szóste spotkanie obu tenisistów na zawodowych kortach i czwarte w głównym cyklu. Wynik ich rywalizacji jest teraz remisowy, choć po pierwszym secie zanosiło się na pewny triumf Diego Schwartzmana. Cristian Garin nie radził sobie zza linii końcowej i trzykrotnie stracił serwis.
Ale Chilijczyk poprawił się w drugiej odsłonie. Nie popełniał już większej liczby niewymuszonych błędów, co od razu przełożyło się na wynik. 23-latek z Santiago wyszedł na 5:2. Schwartzman odrobił co prawda stratę breaka, ale w 10. gemie znów dał się przełamać i było po 1 w setach.



W trzeciej partii Garin nie dał już Argentyńczykowi żadnych szans, zdobywając sześć kolejnych gemów. Po 124 minutach to on zwyciężył ostatecznie 2:6, 6:4, 6:0. To jego trzeci tytuł na mączce w ciągu 12 miesięcy, bowiem wiosną 2019 roku triumfował w Houston (kwiecień) i Monachium (maj). Dzięki temu awansuje w poniedziałek na najwyższą w karierze 26. pozycję. Garin jest również trzecim Chilijczykiem, który wygrał turniej zaliczany do Golden Swingu. Wcześniej na latynoskiej mączce dokonali tego jego wielcy rodacy, Nicolas Massu i Fernando Gonzalez.

Argentyńczycy nie cieszyli się również z tytułu w deblu. Rozstawieni z "czwórką" Leonardo Mayer i Andres Molteni przegrali z oznaczoną trzecim numerem parą Marcelo Demoliner i Matwe Middelkoop 3:6, 6:7(4). Brazylijczyk sięgnął po trzecie mistrzostwo w tourze, natomiast Holender po dziewiąte. Demoliner i Middelkoop wygrali w zeszłym roku wspólnie halowy turniej ATP Tour 250 w Moskwie.

Third-seeded Chilean Cristian Garin was pushed to the brink, but converted his eighth match point to outlast Slovakian Andrej Martin in a thrilling 4-6, 7-5, 7-6(5) first-round battle.

Garin fought back from 2-4 in the final set, but let slip four match points with Martin serving at 5-6. The Chilean built a 6/2 lead in the tie-break and made good on his last chance to prevail after three hours and 10 minutes.

He is now on a five-match winning streak after taking the title two weeks ago in Cordoba (d. Schwartzman). Next up for Garin is Argentine Federico Delbonis, who scored a convincing 6-2, 6-4 win over Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena.

Garin Continues Winning Ways In Rio

Cristian Garin is on track to finish this month as the king of the Latin Swing. The third-seeded Chilean maintained his winning streak on Wednesday by defeating Federico Delbonis 6-4, 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals at the Rio Open presented by Claro.
Garin fired 22 winners en route to advancing in one hour and 37 minutes. The 23-year-old took the title two weeks ago in Cordoba (d. Schwartzman) and has prevailed in his past six matches.

Next up for the third seed is the winner of Wednesday’s night session match between Argentine qualifier Federico Coria and 16-year-old wild card Carlos Alcaraz, who prevailed in his ATP Tour debut on Monday night over fellow Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas.
Brazilian Thiago Monteiro, who upset fourth-seeded Argentine Guido Pella on Tuesday, kicks off the evening session against Hungarian lucky loser Attila Balazs.

In completed action, Chilean Cristian Garin tied his personal-best winning streak by earning his seventh consecutive triumph with a 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory against Argentine qualifier Federico Coria.

"It was a very tough fight. Federico is a player who is improving a lot," Garin said. "I'm very happy to be in the semi-finals. Tough conditions, but I won, so I want to be ready for tomorrow."

Since last April, the third seed has won his first three ATP Tour titles — all on clay — and he is now two wins from lifting tour-level trophy No. 4. Garin, who was victorious in Cordoba earlier this month, has rallied from a set down in five of his past six matches. Against Coria, he battled through the rain to overcome the inspired World No. 116 in two hours and 15 minutes.

Garin appeared in control when he served for the semi-finals at 5-4 in the deciding set. But Coria, the younger brother of former World No. 3 Guillermo Coria, did not hand the Chilean the win. Garin was unable to land a knockout blow, allowing the Argentine back on serve.

But Garin broke back immediately, crushing an inside-out forehand winner to earn another chance to serve for the match. And this time, he did not let slip his chance, raising his arms in celebration after Coria missed a forehand return long.
