Morocco Tennis Tour Meknes (Meknes, Morocco): Maximilian Marterer won his first ATP Challenger Tour title on Saturday in Meknes, defeating Uladzimir Ignatik 7-6(3), 6-3 in 90 minutes. The eighth seed was dominant all week, not dropping a set, while saving an impressive 22 of 23 break points faced. He is the seventh different player from Germany to lift a trophy this year, joining Florian Mayer, Tobias Kamke, Michael Berrer, Mischa Zverev, Dustin Brown and Jan-Lennard Struff.

Marterer Completes Moroccan Challenger Sweep

Maximilian Marterer captured his second ATP Challenger title within seven days, winning the €42,500 event in Kenitra on Saturday against Mohamed Safwat 6-2, 6-4.

The 21-year-old German won 74 per cent of his first service points, saved four of the five break points he faced, converting four of his own to prevail in one hour and 17 minutes.

Safwat was the only second man from Egypt reaching an ATP Challenger final, following Tamer El-Sawy in Weiden 1995. After finishing runner-up to Florian Mayer in Meerbusch last month, Marterer lifted his maiden trophy also on Moroccan soil, in Meknes last week.

“Thanks for the support,” Marterer told during the on-court ceremony. “Also special thanks to my coach. We have only worked together for about three months and I already took my second title. This is unbelievable.”

The German youngster practices at Munich’s TennisBase Oberhaching and is coached by Markus Wislsperger. Marterer will reach a new career high singles ranking on Monday at about 170th position.

On Friday, Marterer also clinched the doubles title alongside Kevin Krawietz. The German duo defeated Uladzimir Ignatik from Belarus and Austrian Michael Linzer 7-6, 4-6, 10-6 in one hour and 31 minutes.

Marterer Wins Banja Luka Challenger

Maximilian Marterer clinched the title of the €43,000 Banja Luka Challenger with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Spanish youngster Carlos Taberner in Sunday’s final, which started with a delay of more than three hours due to bad weather.

Marterer was in total control of the match, saved the only break point he faced, converting four of his own to prevail in just under one hour of play.

By lifting his third ATP Challenger trophy and his first on European soil, the third seed from Germany earned €6,190 in prize money as well as 80 ATP ranking points. Taberner took away €3,650 and 48 ATP ranking points.

“It was a good week for me. Every match was a battle. Unfortunately, it wasn’t my best day in the final,” the runner-up told.

Both players will next compete in the Sibiu Open Challenger in Romania.
