Wspaniałe zwycięstwo Kei'a. ;)
The fourth-seeded Berdych bowed out 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 to Japan's Kei Nishikori, who recently became the highest-ranked Japanese player in history. The 21 year old scored a Top 10 win for a second straight tournament, having also beaten Jo-Wilfried Tsonga en route to his first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 semi-final in Shanghai.

"I’m really happy the way I played today," said World No. 32 Nishikori. "It was a slow start for me, but getting rhythm in the second set and playing really well in the third, so I’m really happy.

Do finału Kei awansował tylko w Houston (przegrał do Sweetinga), a w Delray Beach, Eastbourne, Kuala Lumpur i Szanghaju musiał uznawać wyższość swoich rywali.

Kei przed meczem z Nole:
"It's a great feeling to reach three semi-finals in six weeks," said Nishikori. "I knew it was going to be a tough week. Beating Tomas Berdych in the first round and getting to the semi-finals has been a great experience.

"Djokovic is playing unbelievable this year. He doesn't have many weaknesses, so I will need to play a bit more aggressive than usual and play my best tennis to beat him."

Kei wpisuje się w historię. Ogrywa lidera rankingu!

Obrazek

Nishikori Stuns World No. 1 Djokovic In Basel Semi-finals

Obrazek
Nishikori is the first Japanese player
on the ATP World Tour to beat a World No. 1.

Kei Nishikori notched the biggest win of his career Saturday, knocking off top-ranked Novak Djokovic 2-6, 7-6(4), 6-0 in the Swiss Indoors Basel semi-finals. The win put Nishikori into the record books as the first Japanese player to defeat a World No. 1.

Djokovic started strong, racing to a 5-1 lead in the first set, before closing it out 6-2 in 36 minutes. Nishikori settled in on serve in the second set, and broke Djokovic in the fifth game to lead 3-2. Though he lost his break advantage three games later, the 21-year-old wild card held his nerve to force a tie-break.

The Serbian jumped out to an early mini-break lead, serving at 2-1, but Nishikori quickly erased it, and it proved to be a turning point. After evening the match at one set all, the match belonged to Nishikori. He converted all three of his break point chances and won 80 percent of his service points in the final set to seal the upset in two hours and 16 minutes. Nishikori became just the sixth player to win a set 6-0 against Djokovic on the ATP World Tour, and first since Mardy Fish achieved the feat in a second-round loss to the Serb at Indian Wells in 2010. Djokovic was hampered by a shoulder injury that he received treatment for during the match and is hopeful that he will be able to play in Paris next week.

Nishikori is bidding to win his second ATP World Tour title and first since his surprise triumph in Delray Beach in 2008. He finished runner-up to Ryan Sweeting in Houston in April and recently reached his first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 semi-final in Shanghai (l. to Murray). He’ll play the winner of an all-Swiss semi-final between Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka.

Djokovic was looking to advance to his 12th final in a historic season that has seen the 24 year old win 11 titles, including the Australian Open, Roland Garros, Wimbledon and five Masters 1000 crowns. He has already guaranteed his place atop the year-end South African Airways ATP Rankings.

Kei awansując o 6 pozycji poprawia po raz kolejny najwyższy ranking japońskiego zawodnika w historii ATP.

Jednak do sukcesów Jiro Sato (najlepszego Japończyka w historii dyscypliny, grającego na przełomie lat 20. i 30. ubiegłego wieku) trochę mu jeszcze brakuje. Sato osiągnął dwa półfinały Wimbledonu i RG.

Taki mały wstęp do "Keimanii". :)
Nishikori wins praise despite Federer defeat

Japan's rising tennis star Kei Nishikori jumped up the ATP rankings Monday after a good run that ended with his final defeat to Roger Federer, generating wide acclaim from the national media.

"Reaching the world's top ten and Grand Slam victories seemed so distant for Japanese players. But he is stepping closer," the mass-circulation Yomiuri Shimbun said about Japan's highest ranked men's player.

Nishikori climbed from 32nd to 24th in the world rankings, even after succumbing to a 6-1, 6-3 loss at the hands of Federer in Sunday's Swiss Indoors final, according to ATP.

Wild card Nishikori won praise from Japanese media for his tournament performance, in which the 21-year-old also beat an injured world number one Novak Djokovic and top-ten ranked Tomas Berdych on his way to the final.

"His achievement of not losing to anyone other than King Federer is proof that Nishikori clearly can count himself in competition with the world's top players," the Yomiuri said.

US-based Nishikori was once a practice partner with Federer, who said he was delighted with Nishikori's progress.

Nishikori has suffered a string of injuries, but many in the Japanese media said the Swiss tour allowed him to showcase his true potential.

Nishikori was named the 2008 ATP Newcomer of the Year, the first Asian player to win the award.

He gained attention when a foundation established by Japan Tennis Association president Masaaki Morita sent him to Florida, where he started training at the renowned Nick Bollettieri Academy aged 13.

He made his professional debut in 2007.

In only his fifth tournament, then 18-year-old Nishikori caused a sensation by capturing his first ATP title at Delray Beach in February 2008 to become the second Japanese man to win a tour title.

Nishikori's impressive debut at the US Open in 2008, where he reached the fourth round and beat then world number four David Ferrer on the way, put him in the world spotlight and earned him highly lucrative sponsorship contracts.

Last month he climbed to 32nd in the world—the highest ranking for a Japanese male player, which before Monday's jump was the highest . The previous high was 46th of Shuzo Matsuoka, who retired from competitive tennis in the late 1990s.

'Projekt 45' kontratakuje
Kei Nishikori (Japonia, 21 lat, 24 ATP)

Zaczynając od kwalifikacji wygrał osiem meczów i cały turniej ATP w Delray Beach, a następnie osiągnął IV rundę US Open i półfinał w Sztokholmie. Marsz w górę rankingu przerwała kontuzja, przez którą stracił prawie cały sezon 2009. Teraz wraca, jeszcze mocniejszy.

Kei Nishikori: Let's Get Physical

Obrazek
Nishikori has focused on bulking up this off-season in preparation for 2012.

Kei Nishikori began the 2011 season ranked 98th but reasserted himself as one of the game’s future stars with an impressive year. The 21 year old posted a 36-22 record, reaching finals in Houston and Basel, and recording wins against World No. 1 Novak Djokovic, and Top 10 players Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Tomas Berdych.

He also became the highest Japanese ranked player in ATP World Tour history after advancing to the semi-finals of the Shanghai Rolex Masters. Nishikori finished the year ranked No. 25 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings and will look to break further ground in 2012.

ATPWorldTour.com sat down with Nishikori at the IMG Bollettieri Tennis Academy in Bradenton, Florida to discuss his off-season training for Form & Fitness presented by COMPEED.

How are you preparing for the 2012 season?
This off-season, I used two weeks for just training. I’ve played tennis as well, but my first goal is to get a strong body, so I’ve been working on becoming more physical. I also hope to have a healthy season next year with no big injuries.

Are there specific areas that you’ve been targeting in the off-season?
I’ve done a lot of core and balance exercises. I’ve done heavy weights too, but balance is something I’ve been working on a lot.

How much of an impact do you believe your level of endurance contributed to your rise in 2011?
It’s hard to say because I think it’s something I need to have. I’m not a big guy so I have to get as many balls back as possible to win the points. So having good endurance is important. It’s something I’ve been working on improving this off-season too.

What area of fitness do you think you need to work on most and how do you plan on addressing this?
I think I need to get my entire body bigger in terms of strength. But I also need to have better balance when players are moving me side-to-side as I’m often on the run.

What makes the IMG Bollettieri Tennis Academy a good training base?
A lot of things. I can concentrate on just tennis here. Also, a lot of top players come down, especially now during the off-season, which allows us to train with a number of guys. There are also tons of great coaches here. It’s nice to be able to play tennis and train, and sleep. It’s not a situation we get to be in often.

What are some exercises or stretches you’d recommend a tennis fan implement into their training program?
I’d recommend adding in a number of groin stretches. The adductors are used when changing directions and moving around the court, so players should remember not to forget about this area.

Which player on tour do you think…
Has the strongest core? Roger Federer
Is the quickest? Rafael Nadal
Has the best footwork? David Ferrer
Is the most flexible? Novak Djokovic
Has the best balance? Gael Monfils
Has the greatest muscular endurance? Rafael Nadal
