The 19-year-old will play Monteiro for a semi-final spot

World No. 335 Juan Manuel Cerundolo had not played a tour-level match before this week’s Cordoba Open. Now the 19-year-old Argentine is into his first ATP Tour quarter-final.

Cerundolo battled past third seed Miomir Kecmanovic 6-7(3), 7-5, 6-2 on Thursday in two hours and 19 minutes to reach the last eight at this ATP 250. The lefty broke the Serbian’s serve six times to earn the biggest win of his career.
"I feel incredibly happy. I don't know how to describe it. It's crazy, it's kind of amazing," Cerundolo told ATPTour.com. "I'm feeling the moment and I'll rest now because I have to play tomorrow. I'm very happy, but I'm also focussed on the next match."

The home favourite had only previously attempted to qualify for an ATP Tour main draw once, last year in Buenos Aires. While Cerundolo was unsuccessful on that occasion, he did not lose a set in three qualifying matches this week in Cordoba. The brother of red-hot ATP Challenger Tour standout Francisco Cerundolo, Juan Manuel has maintained his momentum in the main draw with victories against Thiago Seyboth Wild and Kecmanovic.
The 19-year-old credits his success to confidence he gained during qualifying, but also to a change in racquets he made one month ago.

"It's helped me to be more powerful," Cerundolo said. "I have to use less strength to hit the ball. It's a better thing for me."
Cerundolo this week became the youngest player from Argentina to win an ATP Tour match since Juan Martin del Potro at the 2007 Rolex Paris Masters. The qualifier will next play a fellow lefty, Brazilian Thiago Monteiro, who eliminated Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena 6-3, 6-4 in 86 minutes earlier in the day.

Brothers Lead Banner Day For Argentines In Cordoba

It was a banner day for Argentines at the Cordoba Open, with six of eight home players moving into the second round on Tuesday.

For wild card Francisco Cerundolo and qualifier Juan Manuel Cerundolo, the joy was doubled after they became the first Argentine brothers to feature in the same ATP Tour main draw since Alejandro and Carlos Gattiker at 1981 Quito. They took it one step further on Tuesday, sealing both of their first tour-level victories to move into the second round.

19-year-old Juan Manuel was in action after qualifying for his first career ATP Tour tournament. He played far above his No. 335 ranking to take down #NextGenATP Brazilian Thiago Seyboth Wild in a tight 7-5, 7-6(3) battle.

“It’s amazing to play in the same tournament, because he can tell me many things about [playing at] this level which is a bit higher than my ranking,” Juan Manuel told ATPTour.com afterward. “It’s exciting to have your brother to train with and advise me and look forward to. I’m so happy for that.”

Later in the day, older brother Francisco recovered strongly after dropping a tight first set to Italy’s Gianluca Mager, who sits just inside the Top 100 in the FedEx ATP Rankings. Francisco, No. 135 in the world, roared back to claim the victory 6-7(3), 6-1, 6-4 after two hours and three minutes.

“It’s absolutely amazing, me and my brother both winning on the ATP [Tour] is really amazing, to be honest,” said the 22-year-old after joining his brother in the second round. “It’s a dream for our family. Winning our first match, on the same day, at the same tournament – it’s unbelievable.”

Earlier in the day, Cancha Central witnessed back-to-back upsets as two more Argentine players claimed big wins over seeded players to advance in Cordoba. 19-year-old Juan Manuel Cerundolo continued his dream run with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 victory over No. 7 seed Thiago Monteiro to start Friday’s action.

Sitting at No. 335 in the FedEx ATP Rankings, Cerundolo qualified for his first ATP Tour event to join older brother Francisco in the main draw, becoming the first pair of Argentine siblings to feature at the same tournament since 1981. But Juan Manuel just kept winning, toppling third-seeded Miomir Kecmanovic in the second round before taking down Monteiro to reach the semi-finals.

“It’s amazing, I can’t believe it,” Cerundolo told ATPTour.com. “I just feel very happy and I want to enjoy this moment… The most important thing is the confidence [from] these matches. Since the qualies, I have a lot of confidence so I think that was the key. I need to stay healthy mentally too because these matches are very hard.”
Cerundolo is now the youngest Argentine to reach an ATP Tour semi-final since 18-year-old Juan Martin del Potro in Adelaide in 2007.

Cerundolo, 19, Reaches Cordoba Final In ATP Tour Debut

Argentine qualifier Juan Manuel Cerundolo had never played an ATP Tour main draw match before this week at the Cordoba Open. Now, the 19-year-old is one victory away from lifting his first trophy on home soil after defeating Federico Coria 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.

Cerundolo is now the first player to make the final in his Tour debut since Spain’s Santiago Ventura in 2004 Casablanca. He will face fifth seed Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the championship match.

“Honestly, I still can’t believe what is happening,” Cerundolo said in an on-court interview. “It was a really tough match, I was playing very solid in the first set but he started to come back and then anything could happen. After the second set, I did well to recover mentally and withstand him.”

Cerundolo and Coria were both in uncharted waters on Saturday as they each contested their first ATP Tour semi-final. But their roads to get to that point couldn’t be more different: 28-year-old Coria was making a late-career breakthrough, while young Cerundolo was in the midst of the best week of his career after making his ATP Tour main draw debut. In fact, Cerundolo had only played 14 matches in the ATP Challenger Tour and owned a 7-7 record coming into Cordoba.

But the 19-year-old looked more like the veteran on Cancha Central, doing damage with his lefty forehand as he redirected Coria’s power back at his countryman. Cerundolo finished the match with 30 winners against Coria’s 19 as he sealed the victory after two hours and 10 minutes.

“I would describe myself… as a defensive counter puncher,” Cerundolo said. “I like to hit with the other guy’s power. When you face powerful opponents like Fede [Coria], you have to go after them a little bit or else things can get complicated.”

The victory made Cerundolo the youngest Argentine to reach an ATP Tour final since Jose Acasuso, 18, at 2001 Buenos Aires. At that tournament, Acasuso was coached by Alejandro Cerundolo, Juan Manuel’s father.

How To Watch

Cerundolo will take on fifth seed Ramos-Vinolas in the final. The Spaniard needed nearly three hours to end another Argentine qualifier’s dream run as he defeated Facundo Bagnis 7-5, 5-7, 6-3.

All of the Spaniard’s matches in Cordoba have gone three sets, and it was no different against qualifier Bagnis, who was contesting his first ATP Tour semi-final. Ramos-Vinolas edged through the first set and held three match points at 5-4 in the second set, but things took a turn when Bagnis saved all three and took them into a third set. The fifth seed regained control with two breaks of serve to book his spot in the final after two hours and 50 minutes.

Ramos-Vinolas has been crashing the Argentine party all week long in Cordoba, defeating four consecutive Argentine players en route to the final. His biggest victory came over top seed Diego Schwartzman, No. 9 in the FedEx ATP Rankings, in the quarter-finals, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.

He will be looking to make it five wins against Argentines when he faces Cerundolo in the final. Ramos-Vinolas is in the hunt for his third ATP Tour trophy, and his first since 2019 Gstaad.
