For Serbia's Lajovic, Business Is Good At Roland Garros, And Off The Court

Serbian Dusan Lajovic swears he's not addicted to coffee. With his morning breakfast, if he feels a little bit low on energy, the 30th seed at Roland Garros usually has a short espresso, and around 4 or 5 p.m., he might savour a cappuccino, a little pick-me-up to avoid the mid-afternoon slump.
So about two coffees every day.
“Two... three... four... Sometimes but not every day,” Lajovic told ATPTour.com. “Let's say two is a regular dose.
“But I'm trying to not overdue it.”
Who could fault him, though, for occasionally indulging? It's good for business.
Lajovic, along with Serbian doubles player Nikola Cacic, co-founded and co-owns “Laboratorije Kafe”, or Coffee Lab, located about 25 metres from his front door in Belgrade, or, if it was at Roland Garros, about the distance between Court Philippe Chatrier and Court 1.
The café serves the usual coffees – espressos and cappuccinos – along with fresh juices, smoothies, bagels, cookies and ice cream. They import their coffee beans from Italy, after originally sourcing them from Colombia and Brazil, where a sweeter bean grows.

“Now I would say it's a little bit darker, and it's similar to what people are used to in the country,” Lajovic said.
Most Serbians drink Turkish coffee, which has a more sour-tasting flavour, at home, Lajovic said, but the lab offers something a little different.
True to its name, the business also has a lab-like feel. It's all black and white, and its smoothies come in beaker-like glassware. “We actually buy the glasses in the shop from the laboratories,” Lajovic said.
Initially, when he and Cacic founded the business about a few years ago, Lajovic envisioned it as the first in a future chain of shops. But even the most fledgling of tennis careers require full-time focus, and, for Lajovic, future growth forecasts for his main hustle have never looked more promising.
The Serbian reached his first ATP Tour final in April at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters, an ATP Masters 1000 event, beating Austrian Dominic Thiem (No. 5) and Daniil Medvedev of Russia (No. 14) to hit a career-high in the ATP Rankings of No. 23.

“He hasn't surprised me with the level of tennis on clay, because I knew that he has the ability to play at a really high level,” said countryman Novak Djokovic, World No. 1 and 2016 Roland Garros champion.
“But to do it day after day at such a big tournament and to win against big players like Dominic Thiem is phenomenal, and I congratulate him for the great success... It's great for Serbian tennis.”
At Roland Garros, Lajovic is seeded for the first time at a Grand Slam, a designation that has helped him avoid the likes of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in the first or second round.
In four of the past seven Grand Slams, Lajovic has faced a Top 5 player in the first two rounds.
“It's a little bit of a relief,” Lajovic said. “Top 32 in a Grand Slam is something you're always trying to do. When I broke into the Top 50, the next goal was to be seeded in a Grand Slam. Now I'm here, so I'm liking that I did those steps.
“I think every player is doubting about his goals and everything, so whenever you do something like that, it feels satisfactory.”
The 28-year-old credits coach Jose Perlas, who has worked with former No. 1s Carlos Moya and Juan Carlos Ferrero, along with Lajovic's countryman Janko Tipsarevic, for the steady improvement. At the start of 2017, Lajovic was ranked No. 93.
“I've tried to become a little bit more aggressive, to be more dominant with the forehand... and try to use that as my weapon from all kinds of positions on the court,” Lajovic said.
In the past, for instance, if the ball came to his backhand side, he'd hit a backhand, and if it came to his forehand, he'd hit a forehand. He rarely diverted from those basics.
They've tweaked his fitness regimen as well, matching his workouts to his in-match movements.
“I understand him perfectly what he wants from me, he understands what I feel on the court. The connection is really good,” Lajovic said.
The Serbian should also feel good on the clay, and especially at Roland Garros, where he made his best Slam showing in 2014, reaching the Round of 16 before falling to Nadal.
Lajovic, however, doesn't have to worry about facing the 11-time Roland Garros champion unless both reach the final.
The earliest time the Serbian could play a Top 5 player is in the third round, against fifth seed Alexander Zverev, which wouldn't be until Saturday, or, in Lajovic's language, at least three espressos and three cappuccinos from now.

“The key lies in his total and absolute commitment to face the effort required to change his system, including his game, his workouts, as well as the demands of his new game style,” Perlas told ATPTour.com. “He is one of the people who has come to me with the most commitment... I have never seen him doubt what he is doing. He is always committed to improvement.”
The Serbian is dedicated to making a good run at Roland Garros as well, where he made his best Slam showing in 2014, reaching the Round of 16 before falling to Nadal.

Fourth-seeded Serbian Dusan Lajovic moved closer to his first ATP Tour title on Friday at the Plava Laguna Croatia Open Umag, advancing to the semi-finals over Slovenian Aljaz Bedene 5-7, 6-3, 6-3.
Lajovic squandered a 5-3 lead in the opening set, but regrouped to break Bedene four more times and prevailed in two hours and 33 minutes. The 29-year-old achieved his maiden ATP Tour final this April at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters (l. to Fognini) and recorded his career-high ATP Ranking of No. 23 that same month.
Next up for the fourth seed is Italian qualifier Salvatore Caruso or Argentine Facundo Bagnis. Lajovic has never played Caruso, but leads his FedEx ATP Head2Head rivalry with Bagnis 2-1.

Awaiting Balazs in the final will be fourth-seeded Serbian Dusan Lajovic, who moved into the final when qualifier Salvatore Caruso was forced to retire due to injury after dropping the opening set 7-5. Serving at 5-6, 0/15, the Italian hurt his right leg attempting to run down a ball. He received a medical timeout after the first set and played three points in the second set before he conceded defeat.

Lajovic is seeking his first ATP Tour title. The World No. 36 in the ATP Rankings recorded his maiden ATP Tour final in April at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters (l. to Fognini).

Lajovic Lifts Maiden Trophy In Umag

Dusan Lajovic capped his week at the Plava Laguna Croatia Open Umag by reaching a career milestone on Sunday.
The fourth-seeded Serbian claimed his maiden ATP Tour title after rallying from 3-5 down in the opening set to defeat qualifier Attila Balazs 7-5, 7-5. Lajovic dropped one set en route to the title, making further progress in a year of improvement on the ATP Tour.
In April, Lajovic became the second player since 2013 to reach his first tour-level final at an ATP Masters 1000 event. The Serbian did not drop a set en route to the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters championship match before falling to Fabio Fognini. Eight days later, Lajovic reached a career-high No. 23 in the ATP Rankings.
Lajovic improves to 17-16 at tour-level this year and 7-5 at the ATP 250 event following his one-hour, 50-minute victory. The 29-year-old broke serve on four occasions, winning 44 per cent of return points (36/82).

It was Balazs who made the first move in the opening set at 3-3, taking control of points with depth on his returns to break. But Lajovic soon raised his level at the perfect time, bringing his forehand into play on his third break point of the match to reach 5-5. Lajovic repeated the strategy two games later to convert his third set point, moving around his backhand to rip a cross-court forehand return.
Lajovic rode the momentum into the second set, playing with great court coverage to earn his second break point of the fourth game. The World No. 36 played with consistency before driving a backhand to the laces of his opponent to move into a 3-1 lead.

Two games away from the title at 4-2, Lajovic surrendered his serve as Balazs increased his aggression on his forehand. But Lajovic soon refocused, breaking serve at 6-5 on his first championship point, before collapsing to the clay in celebration.
Balazs was aiming to become the first qualifier to capture an ATP Tour trophy this season. Five years after retiring from the sport, the Hungarian was contesting his first tour-level final. His previous best mark at an ATP Tour event came in 2012, when he reached the Bucharest semi-finals (l. to Fognini).
Lajovic receives 250 ATP Ranking points and €90,390 in prize money. Balazs earns 150 ATP Ranking points and €48,870.

Dusan Lajović wygrał rozgrywany na kortach ziemnych turniej ATP 250 w Umagu i zdobył swój pierwszy tytuł w głównym cyklu. W niedzielnym finale Serb w dwóch setach pokonał kwalifikanta Attilę Balazsa.

Attila Balazs w Umagu rozgrywał turniej życia. 30-letni Węgier najpierw udanie przeszedł przez kwalifikacje, następnie dotarł aż do finału, choć w pojedynku I rundy przeciw Viktorowi Galoviciowi musiał bronić aż siedmiu meczboli. W decydującym spotkaniu tenisista z Budapesztu zmierzył się z rozstawionym z numerem czwartym Dusanem Lajoviciem.

W drodze do finału Balazs rozegrał sześć meczów i aż 17 setów, Lajović natomiast odpowiednio - trzy i sześć. Węgier zostawił więc na korcie o wiele więcej sił, ale w początkowej fazie niedzielnego finału nie było to widoczne. 30-latek z Budapesztu był aktywny, przejmował inicjatywę w wymianach z defensywnie grającym Serbem i w pierwszym secie prowadził już 5:3. Lecz w końcówce nie wytrzymał napięcia, przegrał cztery gemy z rzędu i w efekcie inauguracyjną partię.

Po wygraniu seta Lajović poszedł za ciosem i w drugim szybko wyszedł na prowadzenie 4:1. Ale Balazs zacisnął zęby, odrobił stratę i wyrównał na 4:4. Wówczas powtórzyła się z historia z premierowej odsłonie. W 12. gemie Węgier znów został przełamany i kosztowało go to porażkę w całym meczu.

Dla 29-letniego Lajovicia to pierwszy w karierze tytuł rangi ATP Tour w singlu. Za triumf w Plava Laguna Croatia Open Umag 2019 zainkasuje 250 punktów do rankingu ATP oraz 90,3 tys. euro premii finansowej.

Z kolei Balazs otrzyma 162 "oczka" i 51,4 tys. euro. Dzięki finałowi w Umagu w najnowszym notowaniu rankingu, w poniedziałek, po raz pierwszy znajdzie się w gronie 150 najlepszych singlistów świata.
