It may have lasted one hour longer than he’d hoped, but Dusan Lajovic let out a big sigh of relief on after he extended his winning streak to six matches. The Serbian beat Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan 6-4, 6-7(2), 7-6(2) over two hours and 23 minutes, but last week’s Plava Laguna Croatian Open Umag champion endured several momentum shifts for his 18th victory of a career-best season.
Lajovic led by a set and 5-1, and held a match point opportunity on his serve at 5-3, when a deep backhand return from Istomin caught the third seed off guard. Lajovic later recovered from 3-5 down in the decider, but failed to convert two more match points at 6-5 courtesy of a solid serve and backhand volley winner from Istomin. The 29-year-old eventually closed out with a volley winner and turned to his team, shaking his head, in relief.
“It was very tough,” said Lajovic. “I have everything under control and then everything changed. He started putting more balls into the court, putting pressure on me and I got really tight. I was unable to win the second set and at the end, he was the better player and should have won, but I managed to turn it around and in the tie-break I was lucky. I’m happy that I won somehow and I will try to recover for tomorrow.”
Last week, Lajovic lifted his first ATP Tour trophy in Umag (d. Balazs), three months on from reaching the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters final (l. to Fognini).

Next up for Kudla is another Serbian in No. 27 seed Dusan Lajovic, who eased past Belgian Steve Darcis 7-5, 6-3, 6-3. Lajovic racked up 14 break points and won six of them to advance in one hour and 41 minutes.

Fifth seed Dusan Lajovic, who captured his first ATP Tour title in July at the Plava Laguna Croatia Open Umag, struck 10 aces to beat Juan Ignacio Londero of Argentina 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 in one hour and 45 minutes on Tuesday at the Chengdu Open.

Fourth seed Dusan Lajovic recorded his first victory in three FedEx ATP Head2Head encounters against Lukas Rosol, edging the Czech 6-4, 6-7(6), 6-3 to reach his first quarter-final in Moscow. The Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters runner-up landed eight aces and broke serve on three occasions to secure the one-hour, 52-minute win.

Lajovic will meet last year’s runner-up Adrian Mannarino for a semi-final spot. The seventh-seeded Frenchman beat 2013 runner-up Mikhail Kukushkin 7-6(4), 6-2 to confirm his place in the last eight.

Dusan Lajovic - Umag [Match Report]

Dusan Lajovic reached his first ATP Masters 1000 final at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters. And although he didn't lift the trophy, it didn’t take long for the Serbian to enter the ATP Tour winners’ circle.

Lajovic beat qualifier Attila Balazs 7-5, 7-5 to win the Plava Laguna Croatia Open Umag. “It was a match that I’ll remember for the rest of my career,” said Lajovic. “I couldn’t be happier that I won. I had to work for every point, so I’m tired now, but also relieved to have to won my first title.”

Lajovic lost only one set in the tournament, ousting big-hitting Russian Andrey Rublev in his opening match. He broke four times in the final to triumph after one hour and 51 minutes.

When Dusan Lajovic was eight years old, his aunt bought him a book titled Wimbledon, which he says was the 1991 edition. The Serbian, who originally wanted to be a soccer player, began playing tennis at seven because it was the only sport available to his age group, and he remembers reading the book to learn about the history of the sport.

“It gave me a lot of good stuff to see how the players were playing in such an important tournament,” Lajovic said. “I always wanted to do this as my job.”

Little did Lajovic know that two decades later he’d be representing his country at the highest of levels on one of tennis’ biggest stages. The 29-year-old has won four of his five matches at the inaugural ATP Cup, helping lead Serbia to Sunday’s championship match.

Throughout the tournament, Serbian fans have turned out in force, in both Brisbane and Sydney, to support their countrymen. On Saturday, Serbian flags flew throughout Ken Rosewall Arena, with some fans even holding signs that read DULE, Lajovic’s nickname.

The 2019 Umag champion has performed tremendously under that spotlight. He hasn’t shied away from the moment, instead conjuring some of his best tennis. But at heart, Lajovic claims he is an introvert, so he’s still getting used to competing in such hair-raising environments.

“[I’m] still not as comfortable as somebody else would be. But I'm working on myself and trying to be aware of what's going on and understand the situation,” Lajovic said. “I think that this week, especially here in Sydney, I would also say that I'm a different player from Brisbane and here. I got used to it a little bit with the atmosphere and everything. And I'm enjoying the court, especially in the moments where you're fighting for every point like today. This is what you play tennis for.”

The 6’ right-hander recently took a personality test based off the work of psychologist Carl Jung, and got interesting results.

“I'm an architect, which is like [a] 90 per cent introverted person,” Lajovic said. “All the persons with this personality are scientists or professors or stuff like that. There are not so many athletes.

“So with my personality, it's weird being a professional athlete. But I think it came out great. I'm really grateful that I'm able to do the job that I love since I was a kid. For example, you've got to put things in perspective, I think. And then if you ask kids, ‘What do you want to be?’ I don't think that many of them say accountant or whatever. So you have the privilege to do something that you wanted to do as a kid, and I think this is a big benefit for the whole life.”

Lajovic was not a top junior, reaching a career-best junior ranking of No. 132. During his late teens, he did not have much financial support, so Lajovic considered going to college instead of turning professional.

“I had a very interesting meeting and conversation with my parents and they said, ‘Look, if this is what you want to do, we’ll do whatever it takes for us to help you and support you.’ I’m always grateful for them that they were doing this for me because sometimes it’s hard when you don’t see the future and you don’t know what’s going to happen,” Lajovic said. “But I’m happy that I was able to make them proud and succeed and be in this profession where I am today.”

Not only is Lajovic a professional athlete, but he is a role model for his entire country. World No. 2 Djokovic is widely viewed as a national hero, but according to Milan Vuckovic, a Serbian tennis fan in attendance on Saturday at the ATP Cup who moved to Australia when he was four and a half, Lajovic’s efforts during this event rival those of Djokovic’s, with both earning points for their country.

“[He’s] very important. He represents the country, so [he’s] definitely important,” Vuckovic said. “He’s an opening player, so he represents from the first starting match. It means a lot to get up front straight up. He’s only sort of come about in the past five years, but everyone is really starting to recognise him, so it’s good that people outside of Serbia are also recognising him and that he’s representing the country.”

That’s something that means a lot to Lajovic. He first broke into the Top 100 of the FedEx ATP Rankings nearly six years ago, so he has been an elite player for years. But the ATP Cup is giving him a massive platform to show the world how good he is, and to do it for his country, too.

“That's great. I'm probably not aware of that still, but if there is at least one kid that's looking up to me, that's great. If there are more, even better,” Lajovic said. “I'm trying to be the best person off the court as well as on the court. I hope that they can see those qualities as well, not just tennis. That's what life is all about.”

Lajovic has helped push his country to within one tie victory of lifting the inaugural ATP Cup trophy. And while Djokovic has gotten plenty of attention for wins over the likes of Kevin Anderson, Denis Shapovalov and Daniil Medvedev, the World No. 2 praised his countryman Lajovic for his tremendous play.

“So proud, and I want to give him a huge credit for what he has done in this competition so far. He's won all of his matches except one, and the one he lost was in tight three sets,” Djokovic said. “His level is getting higher and higher as the competition progresses, which is so good to see him [do]. I mean, as a friend and someone that has followed his development for many years and to see him playing this well is fantastic.

“I'm enjoying it, and I'm also thankful, because I have been coming into most of my matches with 1-0 rather than 0-1. So it's a huge relief obviously. We have been clinching all of our ties except one match after singles, which is a huge advantage.”

Lajovic will walk into Ken Rosewall Arena with one more singles match to go against either Team Australia or Team Spain. Either way, it’s another opportunity for the No. 2 Serbian to perform in front of the raucous Sydney crowds, and do his part in helping secure a trophy.

“It's a great feeling, especially in the tough moments when they give you the energy and the support,” Lajovic said. “It makes you more pumped and, I would say, ready for the moment, like you are feeling the pressure, but somehow they are giving you the strength.”

Djokovic’s Double Duty Seals Serbia’s ATP Cup Triumph

Novak Djokovic was clutch for Serbia all ATP Cup, but no more so than on the final day of the inaugural tournament as the World No. 2 won two matches and clinched the team title for his country.

Djokovic teamed with countryman Viktor Troicki in a deciding doubles match to beat Pablo Carreno Busta/Feliciano Lopez of Spain 6-3, 6-4, in a match that finished a little after 1 a.m. Monday in Sydney.

Djokovic/Troicki fell behind a break and 1-3 in the first set but, behind a rowdy pro-Serbia crowd, reeled off seven consecutive games and Djokovic served it out, just as he did in singles earlier in the evening. Team Serbia rushed the court, jumping around with Djokovic and Troicki in celebration.

“I'll remember this experience for the rest of my life as definitely one of the nicest moments in my career,” Djokovic said. “I've been very fortunate and blessed to have an amazing career the last 15 years, but playing for the team, playing for the country with some of my best friends for a long long time, you can't match that. That's just too special.”


The World No. 2 continued, elaborating on the support the team has received all tournament, during group play in Brisbane and at the Final Eight in Sydney. A total of 220,319 fans attended the 10-day tournament, and a good percentage of them were supporters of Djokovic and Serbia.

“I've never experienced an atmosphere like this on a tennis court... You carried us to victory and we owe you a big, big thanks,” Djokovic said. “We are part of an individual sport where we play by ourselves. But even when we were playing singles it never felt like it was only you out there. You always have a team in your corner giving you strength and focus. This was the highlight of the competition, along with the support of fans and the flags.”

Troicki was similarly emotional about winning the team title with his boyhood friend. As an eight-year-old, Djokovic played his second-ever competitive match against Troicki, a 9-1 loss.

“I want to thank Novak for playing with me again. It was a great experience like always. I remember playing with him since we were nine, 10. To share such a moment on the court with him, I cannot describe it with words. As you said, I'll remember it for the rest of my life,” Troicki said.

Djokovic forced the deciding doubles after beating Rafael Nadal 6-2, 7-6(4). Nadal and Spain opted for the World No. 1 not to play doubles.

“I have been playing a lot of tennis the last couple of days. My teammates have been playing great yesterday. My level of energy is a little bit lower than usual, because I played long yesterday, very long before yesterday, very long in [Perth] the last day,” Nadal said.

“So it's a team decision, and we believe in our team. That's why we had success in the past, because we were able to give the confidence to the rest of the players, and we give the confidence to Feliciano and Pablo.”

Earlier, Roberto Bautista Agut improved to 6-0 at the ATP Cup and gave Spain a 1-0 lead with a 7-5, 6-1 win against Serbia's Dusan Lajovic.

Lajovic Digs Deep In Buenos Aires

Dusan Lajovic proved on Wednesday at the Argentina Open that he can never be counted out. The third-seeded Serbian erased two set points in the opening set and three more in the second set before defeating Spanish qualifier Pedro Martinez 7-6(6), 7-6(6) to reach the quarter-finals in Buenos Aires.

Lajovic fought back from 4/6 in the first-set tie-break and erased three set points on his serve at 5-6 in the second set, two of which were removed by clean winners. The 29-year-old also clawed back from 1/5 in the second-set tie-break before advancing in two hours and eight minutes.

The Serbian improved to 7-3 this year. Lajovic helped guide Serbia to the title last month at the inaugural ATP Cup (d. Spain) and advanced to the third round at the Australian Open. He currently sits at a career-high FedEx ATP Ranking of No. 23.

Awaiting him in the next round is eighth seed Casper Ruud, who ruthlessly dismissed Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena 6-1, 6-0 in 58 minutes. The Norwegian launched winners from all parts of the court and was particularly potent in return games, winning 24 of 39 return points to break Carballes Baena five times.

Brazilian Thiago Monteiro scored one of the biggest wins in his career by upsetting fourth-seeded Croatian Borna Coric 6-4, 7-6(6). Monteiro let slip a match point at 6/5 in the second-set tie-break by missing a routine overhead smash, but regrouped and blasted a baseline winner two points later to advance in one hour and 46 minutes. The World No. 92 is through to his first tour-level quarter-final since 2018 Hamburg.

Monteiro will face Portuguese lucky loser Pedro Sousa for a place in the semi-finals. Sousa snuck into the main draw when Cristian Garin withdrew, but the 31-year-old is making the most of his opportunity. He defeated Slovakian qualifier Jozef Kovalik 7-6(3), 7-6(5) in the first match of the day for his maiden ATP Tour quarter-final.
