Sunday was a day that Lorenzo Sonego will never forget. In fact, neither will anyone who attended the final in Genova. Sonego successfully defended his crown at the prestigious clay-court Challenger, surviving 20-year-old Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-2, 4-6, 7-6(6) in two hours and 46 minutes.
But it was the drama of the day that will be talked about for years to come at the Valletta Cambiaso Park. After a five-hour rain delay, the championship finally kicked off just before midnight local time. After a hard-fought, high-octane battle, Sonego would eventually raise his arms in triumph at 1:29am. Not only did he fight off four break points at 3-4 in the third set, but he stormed back from 0/4 down in the deciding tie-break.
"It's a great moment for me, for my career," said Sonego. "To win the same tournament in the same place is not easy. I like being here in Genova and I love this tournament."
World No. 49 Sonego is the first player to retain the Genova title in the 17-year history of the tournament. In going back-to-back, he joins Taylor Fritz (Newport Beach), Gregoire Barrere (Lille) and Pablo Andujar (Alicante) as repeat champions on the Challenger circuit this year.

Lorenzo Sonego - Antalya [First-Time Winner Spotlight]

This year’s Turkish Airlines Open Antalya featured two first-time ATP Tour finalists in Lorenzo Sonego and Miomir Kecmanovic. And although Kecmanovic earned a championship point in the second set, it was Sonego who was victorious 6-7(5), 7-6(5), 6-1.

The Italian carried a six-match tour-level losing streak into the tournament, but he won three three-setters en route to the title.

"It is the first title and I am so happy for my family, for my coach, for all the people who support me," said Sonego. "I like, so much, playing on the grass, it was fun.”

Sonego Stuns Second Seed In Rio

Italian Lorenzo Sonego produced the upset of the day at the Rio Open presented by Claro, rallying from a break down in each set to defeat second-seeded Serbian Dusan Lajovic 7-6(5), 7-6(5) and reach the quarter-finals on Thursday.

"I'm so happy," Sonego said. "I like playing here with these conditions. Today was a very tough match because I lost against Lajovic in Monte-Carlo. If he plays good with the forehand, it's amazing. Today I was more aggressive than Monte-Carlo. I served so good. I'm happy [with] this match."

Sonego trailed by 3-4 in the opening set and 0-3 in the second set, but raised his level at critical moments to prevail in two hours and 10 minutes. The 24-year-old is through to his first quarter-final at an ATP 500 event and tied his ATP Head2Head series with Lajovic at 1-1.

Awaiting Sonego in the quarter-finals is fifth-seeded Croatian Borna Coric, who held off an inspired effort from #NextGenATP Brazilian Thiago Seyboth Wild to advance 6-3, 1-6, 7-6(5).

Coric quickly built a 4/0 lead in the third-set tie-break, but the Brazilian brought the crowd to its feet by responding with a four-point run of his own to tie the score. The Croatian held his nerve with a volley winner and aggressive forehand to set up two match points. Seyboth Wild erased the first match point with a forehand winner, but a wild forehand miss from the 19-year-old ended play after two hours and 19 minutes.

”It was extremely tough. I was a bit lucky there. He was a better player in the third set, but I think the experience that I have gave me the edge at the end,” Coric said. “It’s going to be an interesting match [with Sonego]. I’ve never played him before, so I need to do some nice homework tonight with my coach to see how he’s playing.”

Sonego, Andujar Made To Work In Sardinia; Cecchinato Saves 1 M.P.

Lorenzo Sonego regrouped after a second-set comeback from fellow Italian Giulio Zeppieri on Tuesday for a place in the Forte Village Sardegna Open second round. Fifth seed Sonego, who won 82 per cent of his first-service points, earned a 6-2, 7-6(4) victory over the 18-year-old wild card in one hour and 40 minutes.

Last week, Sonego reached the Roland Garros fourth round (l. to Schwartzman), having beaten Taylor Fritz 7-6(5), 6-3, 7-6(17) — the longest tie-break in the Grand Slam championship’s history. The 25-year-old, who is competing in Sardinia at a career-high No. 42 in the FedEx ATP Rankings, will now challenge Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic.

Elsewhere, Marco Cecchinato lived to fight another day, saving one match point at 6/7 in the second-set tie-break of a 5-7, 7-6(7), 6-2 win over Italian compatriot Gianluca Mager in two hours and 33 minutes. Cecchinato will now meet American Tommy Paul.

Earlier in the day, sixth-seeded Spaniard Pablo Andujar saved two set points in the first set and recovered from 1-3 down in the second set to overcome qualifier Jozef Kovalik of Slovakia 7-5, 7-5 in two hours and three minutes. Andujar saved two set points when Kovalik served at 5-4, 40/30 and Ad-In in the first set.

The 35-year-old Andujar, a winner of four ATP Tour titles from nine clay-court finals, will next face Federico Delbonis, who was solid on serve to edge past Andreas Seppi of Italy 7-5, 7-6(6) in one hour and 57 minutes. Delbonis and Seppi met only last week at the Internazionali di Tennis Emilia Romagna in Parma, with the Argentine winning 6-1, 7-6(6).

Roberto Carballes Baena, who beat Denis Shapovalov 8-6 in the fifth set of their Roland Garros second-round match two weeks ago, came through a match of 10 service breaks mid-afternoon, 7-5, 6-4, over Argentine qualifier Federico Coria in just under two hours. The Spaniard now prepares to meet top seed Fabio Fognini.
