Choć Włochy mają ogromne i przepiękne tradycje tenisowe, ponad 40 lat czekają na wielką gwiazdą białego sportu. Ostatnim tenisistą z tego kraju, który dochodził do półfinałów turniejów wielkoszlemowych i był notowany w czołowej "10" rankingu ATP, jest Corrado Barazzutti. Włoch wystąpił w 1/2 finału US Open 1977 i Roland Garros 1978 oraz zajmował siódmą pozycję w klasyfikacji singlistów.
Aktualnie najlepszym włoskim tenisistą jest Fabio Fognini. Gracz z San Remo w rankingu ATP najwyżej wspiął się na 13. lokatę, a w Wielkim Szlemie raz dotarł do ćwierćfinału (Roland Garros 2011). Barazzutti, kapitan reprezentacji Włoch w Pucharze Davisa, wierzy, że Fognini nawiąże do jego dokonań z lat 70. ubiegłego stulecia.

Ostatnim włoskim półfinalistą wielkoszlemowym jest Marco Cecchinato, który dotarł do najlepszej "czwórki" tegorocznego Rolanda Garrosa. - Marco w Paryżu na swojej ulubionej mączce uzyskał wielki sukces. Ale, by wykonać skok jakościowy i utrzymać wysokie miejsca w rankingu, musi także dobrze sobie radzić na pozostałych nawierzchniach - podkreślił Barazutti.

Opiekun włoskiej drużyny narodowej uważa także, że męski tenis na Półwyspie Apenińskim ma dobrą przyszłość. - Niewiele krajów ma w szerokiej czołówce rankingu tak wielu tenisistów, jak my. Mamy Fogniniego, ale także Cecchinato i Matteo Berrettiniego, którzy szybko się rozwijają. Są także inni gotowi, by wykonać wielki skok, jak Sonego, Quinzi, Donati, Baldi i Napolitano, nie wspominając o Travaglii, Fabbiano, Giannessim, Caruso czy Giustino, którzy wciąż walczą - wymienił, dodając: - To zasługa tego, że mamy bardzo dobrych i kompetentnych trenerów oraz pracy federacji, która zapewnia chłopakom wszystko, co potrzebują.

Aged 31, the Italian compiled his best season last year – three titles, 46 wins and a personal year-end best in the ATP Rankings. Fognini seems to have calmed the inner theatre that sometimes derailed his tennis, and if he can make a couple end-of-week finishes at Masters 1000 events, he could squeeze inside the Top 10 in 2019.

Italy's Fabio Fognini advanced courtesy of another first-round retirement. Spain's Jaume Munar, who reached the semi-finals of the 2018 Next Gen ATP Finals, retired down 6-7(3), 6-7(7), 1-3.

Fognini, who won his first hard-court tour-level title last year in Los Cabos, hit 40 winners and saved eight of 10 break points against the 21-year-old Munar. Fognini will next play Argentina's Leonardo Mayer, who beat Chile's Nicolas Jarry 7-6(4), 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-3.

The average height of the Top 10 at the end of the 2018 season was 6'3”. While our sport is undeniably getting taller at the top of the tree, last year, there were two Top 20 standouts under 6' who led the way in the crucible of converting break points when returning.

Hello Fabio and Diego. An Infosys ATP Beyond The Numbers analysis of the Top 20 in the year-end 2018 ATP Rankings focused on break point conversion against first and second serves. The analysis uncovered that Fabio Fognini and Diego Schwartzman stood tallest on tour when the biggest moments in a match arrived.

Break Points Won vs. First Serve
Fognini (5’10”) led the Top 20 in 2018 with break points won against first serves, converting 34.7 per cent (123/329) of the time. The 31-year-old Italian finished the 2018 season ranked No. 13, which equaled a career-high he first reached in 2014.

The 26-year-old Argentine posted a career-best ranking of No. 11 midway through 2018 after reaching the quarter-finals of Roland Garros, losing to eventual champion Rafael Nadal in four sets.

Alexander Zverev saw the most break points against second serves in 2018 with 247 and had the second highest total against first serves, at 352. World No. 1 Novak Djokovic had the most break points against first serves, at 394.


There was almost a 20 percentage-point gap between the average win percentage of the Top 20 converting break points against first serves versus second serves in 2018.

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic suffered a stunning defeat against Philipp Kohlschreiber on Tuesday in the third round of the BNP Paribas Open. But shortly thereafter, the Serbian returned to the court alongside Fabio Fognini, defeating 2015 Nitto ATP Finals champions Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau 7-6(6), 2-6, 10-6.
"I had to get over it in an hour, because I played doubles," said Djokovic, cracking a smile. "I must admit I was thinking about it. When I hit a good return, I was wondering why this didn't happen in singles. But it is, I guess, part of the world that we are in, the world of tennis. It's part of our world, and we just have to bounce back very quickly. And in this case, it's good for me that I'm participating in doubles here, because I get a chance to rectify the wrongs.
"[It's] not easy mentally to refresh your mindset and concentration and get the right intensity on the court so quickly after disappointing loss in singles. But it's not the first time. I have done it in the past. I'm happy that we managed to pull that one through. We beat a very experienced doubles team."

Djokovic and Fognini are the first team into the semi-finals in the California desert, triumphing after one hour and 36 minutes. The Serbian-Italian team nearly let slip a 6/1 lead in the Match Tie-break, but moved through nonetheless. This is Djokovic's first trip to the last four of an ATP Masters 1000 event in doubles since partnering Janko Tipsarevic to the semi-finals of the Rogers Cup in 2015. That year, Fognini teamed with Simone Bolelli to win the Australian Open.
"I love playing doubles. I don't play often. I play few times a year. So these are the rare occasions where I could potentially do well," Djokovic said. "I've got a Grand Slam champion on my side of the net, someone that has great hands in doubles."
