Second seeds Arevalo/Middelkoop also through in straight sets
Ugo Humbert and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga claimed their first team victory on Tuesday when they moved past Andrey Golubev and Hugo Nys 6-3, 6-4 at the Open Sud de France in Montpellier.
In just their second appearance as a team, the unseeded pair saved five of six break points on Court Patrice Dominguez to advance in 69 minutes. Humbert and Tsonga fell in the first round on their team debut at the 2018 Moselle Open in Metz.
Just 24 hours after Tsonga made his long-awaited return to the ATP Tour in a 6-4, 6-2 loss to #NextGenATP American Sebastian Korda, the 2019 singles champion now has his sights set on joining an exclusive club in Montpellier. If Tsonga can lift the doubles trophy, he will become only the second player to win both the singles and doubles titles at the ATP 250.
How To Watch
Alexander Zverev is the only player to feature on both the singles and doubles honour rolls in Montpellier, following his sweep of both events in 2017. Tsonga is competing in his first tournament since the 2020 Australian Open this week due to a back injury. Humbert and Tsonga will face top seeds Henri Kontinen and Edouard Roger-Vasselin or Hubert Hurkacz and Szymon Walkow in the quarter-finals.
Marcelo Arevalo and Matwe Middelkoop began their title bid with a 6-4, 7-5 victory against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Bernabe Zapata Miralles of Spain. The second seeds broke serve on four occasions to reach their third quarter-final in as many events this year.
Sander Arends and Andrea Vavassori also advanced on Tuesday with a 6-4, 6-4 win against Dusan Lajovic and Marc Lopez. The Dutch-Italian partnership won 86 per cent of its first-serve points (31/36) to claim victory in 68 minutes.
Top Seeds Win Singapore Opener
Top seeds Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen advanced to the second round of the Singapore Tennis Open on Tuesday with a 7-6(3), 6-3 triumph against Americans Evan King and Hunter Reese. The second seeds were ousted, however, as Luis David Martinez and David Vega Hernandez upset Rohan Bopanna and Ben McLachlan 6-4, 6-2.
In other doubles action in Singapore, wild cards Jamie Cerretani and Adil Shamasdin ousted Alexander Bublik and Marc Polmans 6-1, 7-5, and Americans Robert Galloway and Alex Lawson eliminated Taro Daniel and Jason Jung 7-5, 6-3.

Bedene upsets Sinner in another final-set tie-break
In his first tournament since he failed to convert two match points against Nick Kyrgios at the Australian Open, Ugo Humbert held his nerve and saved three match points to beat Tallon Griekspoor 6-7(4), 7-6(5), 7-6(5) at the Open Sud de France on Wednesday.
“I thought about the match with Kyrgios [where I had] two match points,” said Humbert, in an on-court interview. “I told myself, ‘You can do it.’ I am super happy for that.”
The sixth seed came from 7-6(4), 5-2 down and escaped three match points at 3-5 in the second set to reach his first quarter-final of 2021 after two hours and 50 minutes. Humbert defended well and benefitted from errors to save the three match points he faced and he served with confidence throughout the decider to earn his place in the last eight.
“It was tough today. [Griekspoor] played at a great level,” said Humbert. “I tried to stay combative. It was tough. [We played] three tie-breaks and I am super happy to win this match.”
How To Watch
Humbert is bidding to capture his third ATP Tour title this week. Interestingly, the Frenchman saved four match points en route to his most recent title at the 2020 European Open in Antwerp.
Humbert is also aiming to continue the tradition of French champions in Montpellier. Eight of the past 10 singles editions of the ATP 250 event have been won by French players.
The 22-year-old will meet top seed Roberto Bautista Agut or French qualifier Gregoire Barrere for a place in the semi-finals. Barrere won 65 per cent of his second-serve return points (20/31) to defeat Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-4, 6-4.
Aljaz Bedene also needed a final-set tie-break on Wednesday, as he overcame fifth seed Jannik Sinner 3-6, 6-2, 7-6(3). The 31-year-old was overpowered in the early stages of the match, but he moved up the court and took the initiative in baseline rallies to turn the match in his favour. Bedene landed 14 aces throughout the match and closed the net well in the final-set tie-break to advance in two hours and 39 minutes.
“In the first set, [Sinner] was the better player… Afterwards, I became more aggressive and was making less mistakes. I think that decided it,” said Bedene, in an on-court interview. “On the important points, I was there. I didn’t lose my focus.”

Bedene is the first player outside the Top 10 to defeat Sinner indoors in a year. Sinner entered the encounter on a 10-match indoor winning streak against players outside the Top 10, which dated back to his quarter-final loss to Pablo Carreno Busta at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament in February 2020.
Bedene gains revenge for his third-round loss to Sinner at the Great Ocean Road Open earlier this month. The World No. 60, who owns a 2-1 ATP Head2Head record against Sinner, will face Egor Gerasimov in the second round. Gerasimov booked his spot in the second round with a 7-6(8), 6-1 victory against Andy Murray on Tuesday.
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina outlasted fellow Spaniard Bernabe Zapata Miralles 7-6(3), 5-7, 6-2 to set up a second-round clash with fourth seed Hubert Hurkacz. The 21-year-old created 15 break points and took six of his opportunities to claim victory in two hours and 31 minutes.

Fourth seed Ugo Humbert joined Sinner in the quarter-finals with a 6-3, 6-4 win against former champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Humbert sealed the victory with a subdued celebration against his good friend and countryman, who had claimed his first ATP Tour victory since 2019 in the first round.
“It is not easy to play against Jo. It was a bit emotional today, but I tried to stay focussed on what I had to do,” Humbert said. “I tried to put a lot of intensity [into my game] today and I’m very happy to win against Jo.”
Humbert awaits the winner of seventh seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and French qualifier Arthur Rinderknech.

The 30-year-old will face Ugo Humbert in the third round. The Frenchman defeated Joao Sousa 6-1, 6-4 to earn his first win in Miami. Raonic saved two match points to win his only previous ATP Head2Head clash against Humbert at last year’s Rolex Paris Masters.

Humbert Moves On, Davidovich Fokina Repeats In Estoril
Spoiler:
Third seed Ugo Humbert was tested in his Millenium Estoril Open debut on Thursday, but he overcame Marco Cecchinato 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 to book his spot in the quarter-finals.
The Frenchman is into his third tour-level quarter-final of the year, and his first away from French soil after reaching the semi-finals in Marseille (l. Herbert) and Montpellier (l. Bautista Agut). He will next face eighth seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina for the first time.
“The conditions are really nice here, but it was a bit windy today so it was tough to play against [Cecchinato] for my first match. But it’s a nice victory,” Humbert said. “I think I [have been] improving my game a lot since last year. I had some good victories over Fognini and Medvedev in Hamburg, and I’m trying to enjoy a lot. I’m very happy.”
How To Watch
Humbert converted three of his nine break opportunities, and held firm in the third set to stave off a comeback from Cecchinato. With Humbert barrelling toward the finish line after taking a 3-0 lead, the Italian reeled off three straight games of his own to level the score. But Humbert found a way to close out the match after an hour and 51 minutes, and improved to 2-0 in his ATP Head2Head against Cecchinato.
